A little about me: I’m Zirrinia, editor, designer, and owner of Southsea Lifestyle Magazine. I’ve been running the magazine for 21 years, starting back in 2005 when my youngest son was just a toddler. Originally launched as The Southsea Directory, the magazine has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of — a true celebration of the people, places, and spirit of Portsmouth and Southsea.

The world stage is a terrible place at the moment, but this article is not about the state of play between superpowers or what’s happening in the Middle East. Unfortunately, much of what we see in the news can become fixated in our minds, creating patterns of fear and worry.

It’s perfectly normal to worry about what’s going on in the world. But sometimes even the smallest concerns can turn into deep suffering as the mind goes over and over something, unable to let it go. In many ways, the mind is simply trying to find a solution for an emotion or feeling that is being held in the body.

Breathwork is a powerful tool that can change this experience.

WHY DOES YOUR MIND GO INTO OVERDRIVE?

Catastrophic thinking occurs when the mind, driven by a relentless urge to solve problems, becomes trapped in a loop of worst-case scenarios. Though these scenarios are often improbable, they can feel very real, embedding themselves in the mind as if they were truths.

This cycle may stem from emotions stored in the body and is closely linked to stress responses. Elevated cortisol levels, muscle tension, and a strained nervous system can slowly create a life dominated by chronic anxiety.

PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY’S INHERITANCE

Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their loved ones eventually. But this will not happen for many unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the

property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together but have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the trust remain over the new property.

It will come as no surprise that we at Chinneck Shaw think Southsea is a wonderful place to live and work, so we thought we’d put the spotlight on our very own Lizzie to explain exactly why we love it so much!

What first brought you to Southsea?

My Mum – she grew up here and her family lived on Castle Road. I moved back after university, met my husband, and settled here for good.

How would you describe the local business community?

Supportive and inspiring. I’ll never forget how everyone pulled together to pedestrianise Castle Road into the vibrant hub it is today. We’ve got such an eclectic mix of businesses – from pottery studios and restaurants to pubs, a bridal boutique, a jewellery designer, and a home interior shop!

What do you love most about day-to-day life here?

The people and the seafront! I’m an early bird, so I’m usually walking by the seafront at 6am, but no matter the time, there’s always something happening – yoga classes, bootcamps, paddleboarders, joggers, and parents chasing children. You can’t go far without seeing someone you know, and it’s lovely to see that happen all around.

If you had friends visiting, where are you taking them?

Well, we wouldn’t need a car –we’d walk everywhere. We’d visit the seafront, the castle, Albert Road, struggle to choose just one cafe, and if we had children with us, we’d visit a play area, the model village, the Natural History Museum (including the Butterfly House) or the D-Day Story.

What excites you most about Southsea’s future?

What makes Southsea such a desirable place to live?

Whether you want the bustle of a city or need your quiet time, Southsea offers both – and it really comes to life in the sunshine. Our green spaces are always busy, and seeing the crocuses covering the common never gets old!

Definitely the sea defences. I was sceptical at first, but what they’ve created is just amazing. I also love how we’re repurposing buildings – like former bottling store, Brewery House, that we now manage – which Ravelin Housing (set up by Portsmouth City Council) transformed into high-spec homes for modern living.

What type of buyers are most drawn to the area?

COASTAL CONFIDENCE: WHY SOUTHSEA STILL SHINES

The market since January has been very encouraging the reduction of interest rates over the Christmas period. Coupled with the pent-up demand now being realised from last year, the market has been very active.

As I write, the situation in the Middle East has not directly affected consumer confidence in the housing market, but as events unfold, if there is no resolution, there could be ramifications, especially if the long-anticipated interest rate cuts do not happen.

While price growth may remain subdued in the short term, the area’s strong fundamentals, coastal appeal, diverse housing stock, excellent transport links and a vibrant local economy continue to underpin long term demand.

For buyers, the current market environment provides opportunities to negotiate and secure properties that may have been beyond reach during the height of the market. For sellers, realistic pricing and highquality presentation remain crucial for achieving positive results.

For landlords, sustained rental demand and competitive yields continue to make the area an attractive proposition, combined with long-term price growth. While the implementation of the Renters Rights Act will bring change, the ongoing demand will support the advantages of being a landlord.

Over the past 12 months, we have observed several second home owners selling up due to increases in second home council tax, and in the commercial sector, some business owners we’ve spoken to are questioning the advantages of maintaining a high street presence given the rising business rates.

I find this really frustrating, and it could be addressed locally. Independently owned businesses not only create jobs for the local community but also help keep prosperity within the community, rather than money disappearing into corporate pockets.

If you want to offer an alternative because, let’s face it, not everyone prefers to stay at home and order online, our high streets must become places where shopping in shops becomes an experience again. I’m sure that with some unconventional thinking, it would be possible to achieve this, but businesses need to be nurtured and supported.

Southsea and Portsmouth remain compelling locations for homeowners, investors, and renters alike. At the very beginning of the appointment, a disclosing solution was applied to her teeth. As she looked in the mirror, she could clearly see areas of plaque highlighted in purple. For the first time, the plaque was not invisible or abstract. It was there in front of her, clearly marked, easy to understand.

Rather than the traditional scraping she was used to, Sidney used a specialised air polishing machine. It was a little loud, but Caroline immediately noticed how much less invasive it

NATURAL SUPPORT FOR HAYFEVER SEASON

THE KINGS THEATRE

The Kings Theatre, Southsea, was designed by Frank Matcham and opened on 30th September 1907.

Frank Matcham was renowned for the construction and design of many well known theatres, including:

• The London Hippodrome

• The London Coliseum

• The Palladium

• The Victoria Palace Theatre

• The Hackney Empire

• Blackpool Tower

• The Grand Theatre Blackpool Matcham’s use of cantilevers for the galleries meant there was no need for columns, which would otherwise obstruct the audience’s view of the stage.

The architecture historian Nikolaus Pevsner described the Kings Theatre as “splendid” and described it as featuring a “hexagonal tower with Ionic columns and lion finials around a broad spire-like top crowned by a cupola with a replica statue of Aurora. The interior is charming and richly detailed, maximising the use of the tight space. Plaster figures and mouldings are executed in Matcham’s full-blown Baroque style.”

England experienced a boom in variety theatres for popular entertainment, which continued the music hall repertoire but were funded by entrepreneurs rather than licensed victuallers. The impetus came from

tighter safety regulations and the drive to separate popular entertainment from alcohol consumption. This resulted in the demolition of many music halls built from the 1840s onwards, which were essentially just drinking halls.

The new music halls were indistinguishable from drama theatres in their design, offering family entertainment in comfortable, fully seated venues, opulently decorated, with no alcohol allowed in the auditorium. Construction declined in the 1920s due to talking pictures.

The boom led to the rise of specialist theatre architects, with Frank Matcham (18541920) being the most notable and prolific. He either designed or remodelled at least 120 theatres and made numerous alterations and enhancements to many others.

The Kings Theatre has undergone several ownership changes and restorations over the years. It was initially owned by The Portsmouth Theatre Company until 1964, when it was purchased by Commander Reggie and Mrs Joan Cooper. The theatre was sold to Hampshire County Council in 1990 and later to Portsmouth City Council in 2001, which leased it to the Kings Theatre Trust Ltd for restoration. The Trust has invested over £2.25 million in restoring the Edwardian playhouse, now Grade II listed, which serves as a venue for a variety of performances and community projects.

HOLD THE RAIN, FEED THE SOIL

Did you know that Portsmouth City Council has surveyed the number of trees in Portsmouth and found there to be around 111,800 in total! They have also counted every tree pit in the city and are in the process of planting trees in any empty ones they found that are suitable. A tree pit is a hole made in a pavemented or concreted area and filled with soil where a small tree is planted to provide shade for residents, reduce flooding and absorb pollutants to improve air quality. They look pretty good too.

Recently, Portsmouth Friends of the Earth has been talking to the Council to suggest how

residents could Adopt a Tree Pit. That is, to become a kind of ‘carer’ for a tree planted near your home. To help Portsmouth become a more sustainable place in 2026, its 100th year as a City, the Council are conducting a trial on this. Look out for more information on the Council website soon.

Planting more trees will help stop floodingan issue that is becoming more urgent each year. As leafy trees slow the process of water dripping down branches and the trunk to the roots in the soil, which then absorbs the water, reducing the chances of larger pools forming. Rain gardens are another way of helping reduce flooding. Two new trees have

been planted and several rain gardens have been created on Castle Road. They make the street look very visually attractive and will help slow the rate of rain runoff into our combined sewers. Residents and local traders will help look after the trees and rain gardens.

Other ways to minimise roads flooding include creating ponds or lakes (like Canoe Lake) in more of the City’s parks. They don’t need to be large.

Creating green roofs on housing blocks with flat roofs in Portsmouth could help prevent flooding entirely. These roofs could grow all sorts of plants that absorb water and provide free fruit or vegetables. This would at least slow down the flow of rainwater to ground level. Even smaller-scale measures like greening flat roofs on garden sheds and

garages can make a difference when many people do it.

What else could you do? When washing your car, try to do it on a porous surface. For example, having gravel instead of a concrete or paved driveway would help in this case. Alternatively, if you have a hedge around your paved garden, try to ensure it is set slightly lower, so rain naturally drains that way, allowing the roots to soak up the water. You could also consider installing porous paths instead of concrete ones.

Winter is finally over, and spring is in full bloom. Short days, bleak skies, and being cooped up indoors are chapters we can now close; goodbye to winter blues. Spring is one of my favourite seasons, and I know that for many of us, it provides the serotonin and motivation we've all been craving.

As someone who loves being outside — and I assume you do as well — long walks along the promenade and through our parks are sublime, especially as everything begins to come alive: greener surroundings, flowers beginning to blossom, and an atmosphere that feels warmer, brighter, and more fragrant.

With this change in weather, having a cup of coffee, whether by yourself or with friends, no longer feels limited to the coffee shop itself. Instead, it becomes something you can take with you.

Luckily, many of our local coffee shops offer takeaway options, making it easy to grab your favourite drink and head straight for the promenade or the park.

A relatively new coffee bar down Burgoyne Road, Bay Coffee is the perfect place to grab a coffee to go before one of those blissful morning strolls along the seafront. It has quickly become a popular meeting spot for everyone, from groups of friends catching up to dog walkers and runners, all stopping by for a well-earned caffeine fix. The First Taste of Spring

Spring has arrived in Southsea, making it the perfect time to introduce myself and write my first article for Southsea Lifestyle. For me, spring is one of the most exciting seasons to be a foodie on the south coast, surrounded by farms that produce some of the country’s finest ingredients. It’s the time when early asparagus appears, the Isle of Wight tomato farm comes back to life; suddenly, the salads from our local eateries taste better than ever.

One place you’ll often find me is sitting outside The Canteen on a crisp spring morning, looking out across the calm waters of The Solent. On a

sunny morning, you can enjoy your coffee as the light creeps past the old stone walls and floods the decking with sunshine. Ships drift past so closely, you feel you could almost touch them, and when a large ship passes at high tide, it's not just sunlight that floods the decking; the wake can send waves crashing, adding a little drama to your morning coffee.

Another venue close to the water's edge is the Southsea Beach Cafe, soon to be relocating along the waterfront to the former site of The Beach Club, a place many will remember as Mozzarella Joe’s. The owners have invested heavily in redesigning

the venue, capitalising on the new promenade. Co-owner Toby Woodfine says the inspiration for the new design comes from "Dutch beach bars", giving the venue a fresh look that many locals will look forward to experiencing.

I would also like to highlight that the restaurant at the Royal Maritime Hotel is, in fact, open to the general public, where new management has recognised the quality coming from the kitchen and started to host regular events in addition to their normal opening hours. Turn to page 37 to get tickets to the Rock ‘N‘ Roll ball at the Royal Maritime in May. The restaurant’s location

shouldn’t be ignored, with the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard just across the road. Many people aren’t aware that it costs nothing to walk inside the dockyard to visit the shops, enjoy a meal at the Boathouse Kitchen, or have a coffee at the Mary Rose Museum on the outside terrace.

Across the city, restaurants are beginning to build a fantastic partnership with Wicor Primary School in Portchester, where pupils grow produce in a small allotment and sell their freshlygrown crops to restaurants. Portsmouth residents are fortunate to have eight allotments with more than 1,700 plots in the area; however, waiting lists remain long, meaning many people have decided to start cultivating a small vegetable patch in their own backyard while they wait.

As Portsmouth moves through its centenary year, there is a renewed sense of enthusiasm across the city. Our history will always define us, but we should also celebrate what's happening on our plates. Let’s focus on our city as the epicentre for showcasing great food from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. A city where our restaurants champion local produce, and let's celebrate this privilege.

VICTORIOUS FESTIVAL CROWNS 2026 ROAD TO VICTORIOUS WINNER!

Emerging Portsmouth artist Matt Hennessy has been crowned the 2026 winner of Road to Victorious, securing a place on the UK festival circuit following a packed final in the city.

The winner was announced at the end of a sold-out showcase at The Wedgewood Rooms, where more than 400 music fans gathered to watch the finalists perform and cast their votes. Hennessy triumphed over fellow finalists Eloise Carter, Rosewater and Rosie Hollins in a night that highlighted the strength of Portsmouth’s grassroots music scene.

Beyond the performances, the programme aims to support emerging artists as they develop their careers. The winner receives rehearsal and recording time, oneto-one industry mentoring, a professional photoshoot and further artist development opportunities throughout the year.

Victorious Festival directors Sian Kelleher and James Ralls said the initiative was created to give something back to the local music community that helped shape the festival.

Adding to the atmosphere were previous winners Mackenzie , Harvey Jay Dodgson and Crystal Tides - the latter recently celebrating a No.1 album on the UK Download Chart - who returned to witness the announcement.

Now in its fourth year, the initiative run by Victorious Festival - offers one emerging artist from the Portsmouth postcode area the opportunity to experience life on the road with a fully supported summer tour.

This year, Hennessy will travel in a 16-berth tour bus with a professional touring crew, as well as a dedicated documentary filmmaker and photography team. The tour includes performances at Truck Festival, Tramlines, Kendal

They said: “Road to Victorious was created to give back to the scene that has helped build the festival into the major event it is today. Creating opportunities for local artists and giving them a genuine platform to take the next step in their careers has always been an important aspect of Victorious Festival, right from the start. Seeing The Wedgewood Rooms packed out with over 400 people last Friday supporting grassroots talent is what it’s all about - what a night!”

Speaking after the announcement, Hennessy said winning the competition felt “like a dream come true”.
