The South African Journal of Science is a multidisciplinary science journal published bimonthly by the Academy of Science of South Africa. Our mandate is to publish original research with an interdisciplinary or regional focus and to provide a forum for discussion of news and developments in research and higher education. This special issue on ‘Sustainability Science Engagement and Engaged Sustainability Science’ juxtaposes science engagement with engaged science. The contributions, with their diversity of perspectives, help to more substantively elaborate the full meaning of transformative science for and with society, including in and through educational interventions that can advance engaged science and science engagement.
