Worthing FC 2 St Neots Town 2 (Worthing won 6-5 on penalties)

This delayed FA Cup replay was eventually decided by a sudden death sixteen penalty shoot-out after a gruelling 2-2 draw and an unproductive period of extra time, so the Sussex side progressed to the Third Qualifying Round of the competition and picked up the £4500 sponsorship reward. Still struggling with player availability due to injury and suspension St Neots handed a debut to Ryan Horne in midfield and included Guiy Mailancol out of position starting at full back in place of Jack Wilkinson. The real drama came late in the evening when after five penalties each the score was 4-4 with Ryan Hawkins, Tom Meechan, Isaac Galliford and Brett Longden all successful from 12 yards but Lee Clarke had seen his spot kick saved by Rikki Banks.Andy Wilton had also saved one of the Worthing penalties so it was on to sudden death where Connor Hall netted but Tom Ward saw his effort rebound from the bar before Adam Tann skied over the bar to end St Neots hopes.
St Neots began slowly on the unfamiliar 3G surface, but Nathan Frater had their first two chances around the quarter hour mark shooting wide after good interplay by Meechan and Hawkins before bringing a good early save from Banks. The same played headed over the bar from a lengthy Tom Ward throw whilst Worthing’s best effort was a shot from Harvey Sparks well saved by Any Wilton. St Neots then deservedly took the lead after 27 minutes when the home keeper fumbled the ball and despite being surrounded by defenders Ryan Hawkins forced the ball home. Within five minutes Metcalf had the ball in the net for Worthing but was denied by an offside flag but after 35 minutes the scores were levelled when Omar Bugiel beat Andy Wilton to a testing through ball to lob the keeper. On the stroke of half time St Neots seemed to be denied a penalty when Tom Meechan was tumbled in the penalty area, so the sides went to the break locked together at 1-1.
St Neots made a significant tactical change after the break with Frater partnering Meechan up front, Hawkins withdrawn to a wider role and Lee Clarke still short of full fitness in midfield for Mailancol. Now looking evenly match both sides went for victory creating chances regularly. Hall volleyed wide from a Ward as St Neots looked the better side with Clarke, Meechan and ward all going close. The pressure paid off after 64 minutes when the visitors regained the lead when from a Ryan Horne corner Clarke netted with a spectacular overhead kick. However ,this time the lead lasted just sixty seconds before Lloyd Dawes produced a stunning strike from 30 yards that went in off the underside of the crossbar leaving Wilton helpless.

Then it was end to end as Worthing had a ‘goal’ disallowed by an offside flag and St Neots looking very positive with just three at the back.As ninety minutes approached Meechan and Ward were close for St Neots and Corey Heath brought a good save from Wilton.
With both sides visibly tiring the tempo dropped in the 30 minutes extra time although the visitors boldly sent on teenage striker Claudio Ofosu for Horne. It was the home side that were denied two late chances when the well placed Zack Newton fired into the side netting and Dawes had the last effort of the match cleared off the St Neots line. It was a long late trip back home.
