Readings and Questions for Faith Sharing on the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I: Genesis 18:20-32

“Please, let not my Lord grow angry if I speak up this last time. What if there are at least ten there?”

Reading II: Colossians 2:12-14

He also removed it from our midst, nailing it to the cross.

Gospel: Luke 11:1-13

“And I tell you, ask and you will receive.”

Question for Adults:

When I pray to ask God for something, am I ready to place all my trust in Him?

Question for Children:

Do I pray the Our Father that Jesus taught us?

Dear parishioners,

“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. Tere is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)

One lesson from the Gospel of this Sunday is that it is important to acknowledge and appreciate the good things God is doing in the here and now.

Part of the mission of our parish is its commitment to education. Saint Mary enjoys an almost unique privilege of being able to educate and evangelize not just our own young people, but also those of many diferent communities, counties, and boroughs throughout the city and Long Island.

Our Saint Mary High School, in order to be competitive, ofers an athletic program in addition to its instructional, emotional, and spiritual formation programs.

A few decades back, our sports were greatly aided by parishioner Bud Denihan who donated our playing felds. Tose felds were later enhanced when Anthony Bonomo, father of a Saint Mary High School student, modernized them with a gift of artifcial turf.

As your eyes could tell you, that original turf has outlived its usefulness. Replacing it is very costly.

Upon my arrival here, I discovered that our High School Principal, Mr. Buckley, had assembled a group of interested alumni and parishioners who have used their business acumen as well as their personal generosity to make this daunting task a reality. If all goes well, next year’s Gaels will be competing on a restored Denihan Field!

I feel very proud of the legacy we have in raising up faithful young people in our larger region. Te goodness that has made this summer work possible tells me that our parishioners share that pride.

With the help of this new sporting feld, Saint Mary’s High School will be in a great position to continue its mission into the future.

With you, in the service of Jesus through Mary, Fr. Tom

J Stewards of God’s Gifts

“He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.”

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

How to Pray During Eucharistic Adoration

Tere is no wrong way to pray during adoration! You can talk to God about your personal intentions, seek spiritual guidance, or simply ofer thanksgiving and adoration to God. It’s a great time to practice Lectio Divina, prepare for the upcoming Sunday by reading the Gospel ahead of time, or meditating on the Rosary. Even just sitting in silence and allowing for God’s presence to wash over you is an appropriate way to spend time in adoration!

Prayers for Exposition:

After the priest begins with the opening prayers, he will sing O Saving Victim, either in English or Latin.

O saving Victim, open wide. Te gate of heaven to us below.

Our foes press on from every side; Your aid supply, your strength bestow.

To your great name be endless praise, Immortal Godhead, One in Tree; O grant us endless length of days In our true native land with thee. Amen.

O salutaris Hostia

Quae caeli pandis ostium; Bella premunt hostilia, Da robur, fer auxillium.

Uni trinoque Domino

Sit sempiterna gloria, Qui vitam sine termino

Nobis donet in patria. Amen

Prayers for Benediction: Tantum Ergo is sung, either in English or Latin.

Down in adoration falling, Tis great Sacrament we hail; Over ancient forms of worship

Newer rites of grace prevail; Faith will tell us Christ is present, When our human senses fail. To the everlasting Father, And the Son who made us free, And the Spirit, God proceeding from them each eternally, Be salvation, honor, blessing, might and endless majesty. Amen.

Te Divine Praises:

Tantum ergo Sacramentum

Veneremur cernui, Et antiquum documentum

Novo cedat ritui; Praestet fdes supplementum Sensuum defectfui.

Genitori Gentioque

Laus et jubilatio, Salus, honor, virtus quoque Sit et benedictio; Procedenti ab utroque

Compar sit laudatio. Amen.

Blessed be God. Blessed be his holy name.

Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man.

Blessed be the name of Jesus.

Blessed be his most Sacred Heart.

Blessed be his most Precious Blood. Blessed be Jesus in the most holy sacrament of the altar. Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.

Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.

Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception. Blessed be her glorious Assumption.

Blessed be the name of Mary, virgin and Mother.

Blessed be St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse.

Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints. Amen.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Closing Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church

Friday, July 26th - Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virign Mary

Saints Anne and Joachim are traditionally known as the parents of the Virgin Mary, as mentioned in some apocryphal writings. St. Anne is the patron saint of women in labor as well as both Brittany (France) and Canada. As the grandparents of Jesus, Saints Anne and Joachim are considered the patron saints of grandparents.

Let us pray:

Saints Anne and Joachim, thank you for your example of faith. Tank you for your wonderful daughter, our spiritual mother, Mary. Tank you for the love of God and the faith you inspire in us. Grandparents of Jesus, pray for us. Amen.

Summer Rosary Beads Project

Once again we will be collecting Rosary Beads for our basket located in the south vestibule of the Church. Tese beads are for anyone to use for quiet prayer or refection. Tey may be kept or returned to the basket. If you have any extra Rosary beads that you can donate to our basket, please reply to us at rosarysociety@stmary.ws or drop them of in our parish ofce mailbox.

Respect Life Ministry

“Married love difers from any other love in the world. By its nature, the love of husband and wife is so complete, so ordered to a lifetime of communion with God and each other, that it is open to creating a new human being they will love and care for together.” — USCCB, “Married Love and the Gift of Life” (https://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/what-we-believe/love-and-sexuality/married-love-and-the-gift-of-life)

St. Mary’s Respect Life Ministry meets monthly exploring ways to promote our Respect Life mission:

Our mission is to build a civilization of love and life which upholds the dignity and inviolability of all innocent human life, seeks objective moral Truth, embraces the value of redemptive sufering, and yearns for the fullness of life in eternal communion with God the Creator.
