At the other extreme of course, there a re those who would have you defy tried an<l tn1e rules of art and journalism just to be <lifferent. "Jumble the pictures on the page, in varie<l positions and at all angles," an exeprimentalist might say. \Xlell you need only see such a finished page to know that the experiment faileJ. The result has the
savor of a fallen cake. But all this nee<l not keep us from <laring to be <lifferent. Imaginative ed itors can teach their photographers to seek new ang les, new approaches to common scenes and subjects or their writers will fin<l new ways of telling old stories. Let's try this fresh approach, for this is only a beginning.

registration 1963 Long lines were proof that 381 students registered for the fall semeste r. How nice it would have been not to have an 8 o¡clock class everyday but that is just one of the problems with registration.

r\ week before school is to commence, the freshmen spend two days taking a battery of entrance tests. But in their free time they enjoy seeing the new campus. Trips have been planned for them to see local industry and the usual things one would expect to see in the capital city. Plans are in effect to make next years orientation even better.
There is a lso another week set aside for the freshmen by the desire of the upperclassmen, This week is designated "Hell \Xleek." During this week the Frosh learn how to ''grin and bear it." It has been said, that after a week of this one really feels it, especially on the end.

final election The week o f January 12-1 7 was special here. It was the time of student body elections. A vigorous campaign was carried on by all candidates. Students received the results of the m_o st hotly contested office of vice-president. It was Les Bailey and his superb qualifications in parliamentary procedu re that led him to defeat Ed McGoldrick and his social reform platform br forty votes.
The new officers of the ASSMC are: President Rod Carruthers, Vice-President Les Bailey, Secretary T om Kasper, Treasurer Abe Kou ttainey, and Assistant Treasurer Ray Goggin.

EMK-day student christmas celebration There was a change this year in the anr.Jual sponsorship of the annual Christmas party. This year the Day Stu<lents with EMK out<lid themselves. A Jinner was arranged for the Day students & their wives along with the boa rders. Following the Jinn(-r everyone returned to naran Hall to await the arrival of Santa. It seems that Santa had gifts not only for the children but for Father George an<l ASB President Dick Roney. Aftcr gifts were: passe<l out the children with their parents journeyed over to the Abbey Theater for a special show for the chil<lrcn. Thus came the close of a truly Christmas spirited party for all.

homecoming Homecoming 1964, under the auspices of the Associated Students of St. Martin's, turned out to be o ne of the most memo rable homecomings in the sixty-nine yea r history o f the institution. The traditional bonfire reached new heights - close to twenty feet. The All-Day Hootenanny sparked spirit and enthusiasm. The climax of Homecoming came with the double-header with the University of Alaska. St . .Martin 's annihilated them both games. As the evening prog ressed the scene became a glitter of gold a~ Jani Hulbert was crowned the 1964 H o mecoming Queen. Her M ajesty closed the final chapter of this memorable occasio n wi th a royal waltz at the 1964 H omecoming Ball held in the beautiful Pow-\Vow Room in the capital city of Olympia.

k e t The 1963-64 basketball season saw St. Martins College rise to a pinnacle of greatness for a small college team. After setting down a record of 11-15 wonlost season, the Rangers had an eight game winning streak. One of the memorable highlights was set in November when the Rangers nearly upset Tacoma athletic Basketball Tournament by send ing their first game with UPS into overtime. Althoug h the Rangers lost by three points, they shocked their fans. The road trips were unsuccessful but the Rangers did better during the Ch ristmas H olidays. And in February the team won seven out of eight g ames. The Rangers could get a playoff invitation to the Evergreen Conference. This will dep end on whether they d efeat Seattle Pacific. Now we have really seen our team in action, isn't it what we all have been waiting

The college students participating in this venture aimed at both cementing relations with citizens o f Olympia, and raising money for the HAPEC Fund.
A dinner was prepared for the q ueen candidates by Saga. After dinner, all retired to the Abbey Theater to hear 'The Young Men¡ from the U of W. from here, it was off to the dance, put on by the freshmen. During the intermission Judy .Medved was selected as queen. Afte r the dance, all headed back to prepare for Sunday's activities, started w ith .Mass and which ended with a picnic.

mother's day May 12 , was designated as 'Mothers Day' here at St. Martin's. The college played host to over three hundred mo thers. It was an active day for all the mothers who attended, as far as Alaska to California. The va rious .Mo ther' s Clubs presented their checks to the A bbey in the fo rm of scho larships to those who m ay need assistance in fu rth ering their educatio n. Fo llowing the.: progra m, a receptio n was given to th e ;\,fathers in Jhran Hall. Although there were a few showers, it still was a special day for our mothe rs.

There are very few of us who realize the number of studc:nts who give of their extra time to aid our Volunteer Fire D epartment. Special credit should be g iven to the gr aduating seniors : Ed Novak, Dave Krimm, Jerry Nicholls, and to the many who have worked so diligently and who have not received credit for a job well done. Remember, while we sleep at night part of our college is on duty protecting Thurston County.
