A HISTORICAL OVERVIE W OF SAINT MARTIN’S UNIVERSITY
W Established in 1895, Saint Martin’s University is a four-year, coeducational Catholic university located in Lacey, Washington. Saint Martin’s is one of 13 Benedictine colleges and universities in the United States and the only one west of the Rocky Mountains. Saint Martin’s University stands proudly rooted in its unique Benedictine heritage. The Benedictine monks belong to the oldest monastic order in Western Civilization, with 1,500 years of tradition behind them. Over the centuries, their long record of scholarship and achievement have made the Benedictines wellsuited to education. The monks of Saint Martin’s Abbey founded the institution and today remain actively engaged in the life of the campus. Saint Martin’s began as a school educating boys and young men in college preparatory classes. Collegelevel classes were added in 1900. During the Great Depression, the school closed its grammar school and developed its high school and college programs. In 1938, its four-year baccalaureate program was accredited, and two years later, its first graduates received their degrees. After World War II, hundreds of veterans arrived at Saint Martin’s College and enrolled under the G.I. Bill. To meet the needs of these students, Saint Martin’s augmented its liberal arts curriculum by adding programs in accounting, business and engineering. In 1965, well ahead of many Catholic colleges in the United States, Saint Martin’s became coeducational. In 1972, Saint Martin’s broadened its reach and began serving the needs of part-time adult students with the establishment of extension programs at nearby Fort Lewis Army Post and McChord Air Force Base, now known as Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The 1980s brought the addition of graduate courses and the creation of the Institute for Pacific Rim Studies, which has since evolved into the University’s Office of International Programs and Development. In 2001, the O’Grady Library opened. Designed by world-renowned architect Michael Graves, the library has become a signature building on the campus. In 2005, Spangler Hall, a new residence hall named in honor of President Emeritus David R. Spangler, Ph.D., was completed. That same year, Saint Martin’s College officially became Saint Martin’s University to more accurately reflect the institution’s nature, better fulfill its mission, and recognize the wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs available to students. The years 2008 and 2009 brought many changes to the campus: the opening of the University’s fourth residence hall, Parsons Hall, named for long-time Saint Martin’s supporters Ken F. Sr. and Gale L. Parsons; the opening of Harned Hall honoring H.C. “Joe” Harned and which now houses classrooms, the Diversity and Equity Center and the Veterans Center; the dedication of a world-class track and field facility and the Jan Halliday ’89 Memorial Plaza; and the completion of the Charneski Recreation Center. In 2009, the University also welcomed its 10th president, Roy F. Heynderickx, Ph.D. In 2011, the name of the street guiding guests through Saint Martin’s main entrance was changed from 6th Avenue to “Abbey Way” — part of the transformation of the north campus that culminated in 2013 with the Fr. Alfred Hulscher, O.S.B. Courtyard renovation behind Old Main. Also in 2013, the new Fr. Richard Cebula, O.S.B. Hall, home of The Hal and Inge Marcus School of Engineering, opened and achieved Platinum LEED certification; it is currently the highest-rated LEED-certified educational building in the Western Hemisphere and third highest in the world. Adjacent to Cebula Hall is the new 17,000-squarefoot industrial lab building, the Panowicz Foundry for Innovation and the E.L. Wiegand Laboratories, which was completed in 2016. May 2019, the University opened the Fr. Bede Ernsdorff, O.S.B. Center, a new 30,000-square-foot classroom and laboratory facility that houses the Fr. Placidus Reischman, O.S.B. Department of Natural Sciences. The new science building includes laboratories, classrooms, collaborative research spaces and offices. The Ernsdorff Center, Cebula Hall and the Panowicz Foundry for Innovation and the E.L. Wiegand Laboratories create a STEM complex at the core of the campus. Also in 2019, Saint Martin’s University, in recognition of its long history of supporting veterans and their families, received the distinction of being named the first Purple Heart University in the state of Washington. Through decades of change and growth, the University has held true to its Benedictine values — community, hospitality, stewardship, listening and dignity of work, among others — which remain central to life at Saint Martin’s. page 5

W George Parker ’71, Ph.D. Boeing Dr. George Parker is Saint Martin’s Trustee and a member of the Class of 1971. Dr. Parker has worked at The Boeing Company for over 30 years. He first joined Boeing in 1988 as a research engineer and scientist. In 2011, he became part of an elite group, the Prestigious Technical Fellowship, as an associate technical fellow and, in 2016, he was named a technical fellow. In his current position, as a lead engineer and designated expert, he leads and interfaces with engineers, scientists and technical technicians to solve production material problems, research new materials, and perform failure analysis support and investigative analysis in support of the National Transportation and Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration. Prior to Boeing, Dr. Parker’s varied career included working for the U.S. Army and the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as playing briefly for the Portland Trailblazers, The Philadelphia 76ers and the Baltimore Claws. Dr. Parker actively mentors young engineers and scientists, working with various science, technology, engineering and math outreach programs. He has received extensive recognition for this work, including The National Society of Black Engineers Golden Torch Award for “Lifetime Achievement in Industry” in 2012; the Red-Tailed Hawks’ “Future Thrust Award” in 2016; and “The Black Engineer of the Year Award / Senior Technology Fellow” from the Career Communication Group in 2017. In addition to serving on the Saint Martin’s Board of Trustees, Dr. Parker sits on the Advisory Board for the Edmonds Community College Engineering and Computer Science Department; on the Board of Trustees for Seattle Pacific University; and as an Advisory Board Overseer for Djagora University in Senegal. Dr. Parker holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Saint Martin’s, a master’s degree in organic analytical chemistry from the University of Virginia, and a master’s degree in industrial and business management from the University of Washington/ECLEE-Lille School of Business. He was a Ph.D. candidate at University of Washington and received his Ph.D. in strategic, programme and project management from SKEMA School of Business France. Saint Martin’s University recognized Dr. Parker for his professional achievement with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2018.

W Chris Cortez, Major General USMC (retired) Recipient, Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa Christopher Cortez has dedicated his life to serving his country and fellow soldiers. His career in the U.S. Marine Corps has spanned more than three decades, including serving as a commander during Operation Desert Storm; Director of Operations for the U.S. Pacific Command; and leading the Marine Corps Recruiting Command at Quantico, VA. His strength and integrity served him well as the highestranking Hispanic-American in the Corps upon his retirement in 2004. He is the son of a father who picked fruit in the fields of Northern California, and whose devoted mother could neither read nor write, also instilled in him the desire to become a lifelong advocate of education, earning a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Marietta College in Ohio, and a master’s degree in Business from Azusa Pacific University. He has worked tirelessly to expand education and hiring efforts for veterans as well as serving as a mentor for those veterans newly entering the civilian workforce. Prairie Rose Hyde Recipient, Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa Prairie Rose Hyde has shown an unwavering commitment towards having an impact on the quality of life of those less fortunate. After graduating from Whitman College with a degree in biology and a minor in art, she volunteered with the Peace Corps in sustainable agriculture efforts in the Central African Republic. When the country experienced a military uprising and the Peace Corps removed its programs, she relocated to Central Togo and continued her work with women’s and youth cooperatives on sustainable agricultural practices. Inspired by the need of the women of Togo for the ability to market their products produced, she enrolled in the University of California at Davis where she earned her master’s degree in International Agricultural Development and a second master’s degree in Integrated Ecology. In 2003, you and her partner, Olowo-n’djo Tchala, founded Alaffia, a social enterprise company investing in and importing bulk products that are harvested, prepared and packed by the women of Togo. Through the sale of these products, Alaffia has been able to fund its Empowerment Projects, which include maternal health care, education, reforestation and regenerative agriculture. A. Richard Panowicz Recipient, Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa A. Richard Panowicz has shown a lifelong commitment to quality, integrity and compassion. His lifelong experience has been comprehensive – spanning from the military to operations management to strategic planning and business development. He has served on many nonprofit boards, including past president and board member of the Hands On Children’s Museum; past president and board member of Providence St. Peter’s Hospital Community Board; member of the board of directors of the Washington Center for the Performing Arts and the Community Foundation. Over the last two decades, he played an instrumental part in the significant growth of Saint Martin’s University. Since 2000, he has been a member of the Saint Martin’s Board of Trustees, serving the board in various capacities, including Chairmanship from 2009 to 2012 whereby he was awarded the Martin of Tours Medal. He helped shepherd the University through facilities improvements and new construction, including the Charneski Recreation Center, Cebula Hall, the Panowicz Foundry and the expansion of academic programs of nursing and the Hal and Inge Marcus School of Engineering, all of which will benefit generations of Saint Martin’s students to come.

W Kianna Renee Garmanian Valedictorian Valedictorian Kianna Garmanian of Bothell, Washington is graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies. During her time at Saint Martin’s, she was Campus Ministry Student Leader, Catholic Relief Services Ambassador, Track and Field Student Athlete, and a writer for The Belltower. Kianna was also a two-time recipient of the Alumni Association Scholarship as well as the Jerome Toner award for her mental/physical health advocacy work. After graduation, her current plans include continuing work as a youth and young adult ministry. Her long-term goals include her hopes to be a published author, speaking at Catholic conferences/conventions, and inspiring youth in the Catholic Church.
Naomi Leigh Gilmore Salutatorian Salutatorian Naomi Gilmore of Washougal, Washington is graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in history. During her time at Saint Martin’s, she was an officer in the Saint Martin’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta (the national English honor society), an officer in Saints for Life (pro-life club), a member of Circle K International, a first-year orientation leader, and a peer minister for Campus Ministry. Naomi received several awards from the Literary Studies department for excellence in her studies and she presented a paper at the Northwest Undergraduate Conference on Literature. She is currently working on plans, and is excited to see what God has in store for her.

ORIGINS AND SIGNIFICANCE OF ACADEMIC REGALIA
W The origins of academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when universities were taking form. Long gowns were worn and may have been necessary for warmth in unheated buildings. Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head until superseded for that purpose by the skull cap. In the days of Henry VIII of England, Oxford and Cambridge first began prescribing a definite academic dress and made it a matter of university control even to the extent of its minor details. The assignment of colors to signify certain faculties was a much later development, and one which was standardized in the United States only in the late 19th century. White taken from the white fur trimming of the Oxford and Cambridge B.A. hoods was assigned to arts and letters. Red, one of the traditional colors of the Church, went to theology. Green, the color of medieval herbs, was adopted for medicine, and olive, because it was so close to green, was given to pharmacy. Golden yellow, standing for the wealth which scientific research had produced, was assigned to the sciences. In 1893, an Intercollegiate Commission made up of representatives of leading institutions gathered to establish a suitable system of academic apparel. In 1932, the American Council on Education authorized the appointment of a committee “to determine whether revision and completion of the academic code adopted by the conference of the colleges and universities in 1895 is desirable at this time, and, if so, to draft a revised code and present a plan for submitting the code to the consideration of the institutional members of the Council. Master’s hoods are trimmed in specific colors for each discipline. Master of Business Administration candidates receive hoods trimmed in drab; Master of Civil Engineering, Master of Engineering Management, and Master of Mechanical Engineering candidates receive orange trimmed hoods; Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology candidates receive citron trimmed hoods; Master of Education and Master in Teaching candidates receive hoods trimmed in light blue. The committee reviewed the situation through correspondence and conference and approved a code for academic costumes that has been in effect since that year. A Committee on Academic Costumes and Ceremonies, appointed by the American Council on Education in 1959, again reviewed the costume code and made several changes. In 1986, the committee updated the code and added a sentence clarifying the use of the color dark blue for the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. European institutions continue to have a greater diversity in their specifications of academic dress than is seen in this country. Gowns The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves. It is designed to be worn closed. The gown for the master’s degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, like the others. The sleeve base hangs down in the traditional manner. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has an arc cut away. The gown is so designed and supplied with fasteners that it may be worn open or closed. The gown for the doctoral degree has bell-shaped sleeves. It is so designed and supplied with fasteners that it may be worn open or closed. Hoods The length of the hood worn for the master’s degree must be three and one-half feet and for the doctoral degree, four feet. The hood worn for the doctoral degree only has panels at the sides. The hoods are lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. Caps Mortarboards are generally recommended. A long tassel is fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap only and lies as it will thereon. The tassel is black or the color appropriate to the subject, with the exception of the doctoral cap, which may have a tassel of gold. -American Council on Education page 26

THE SAINT MARTIN’S UNIVERSITY SEAL The seal, as shown on the cover of this program, was designed by Father Sebastian Ruth, O.S.B. (1875-1958) in the early 20th century. The Latin phrase translates as “cross of [our] Holy Father Benedict” and an image of the Benedictine cross forms part of the seal’s design. Mount Rainer, visible from the Saint Martin’s University hilltop on a clear day, is combined with images of Puget Sound and the fir trees that abound on the campus.
