The generations of brotherhood that have been born at Saint Joe’s exemplify the bonds that form with shared knowledge, respect and integrity while learning through academics and experience. You could say that the foundation of our school began 200 years ago when Father André Coindre had a vision of providing a Catholic education to needy young men and made it the ministry of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. The development of fellowship through enhanced learning and the formation of “Saint Joseph Men” by mirroring the heart of Jesus is the foundation upon which we celebrate our 60th year and look to the future with permanence and constancy.

Dear Saint Joe’s Community, As we pass our mid-term of the school year and enter 2022, I am full of gratitude and optimism in reflecting on our accomplishments and looking forward to achievements ahead. Most of all, we are blessed to have our students on campus with activity in classrooms, clubs and sports moving forward. I am proud of our Principal, Anne Rivera, her senior leadership team, and all of our Partners in Mission for their high standard of student safety and their collective talents and adaptability in our new, ever-changing social landscape. Our theme for this year’s Annual Report is “60 Years of Brotherhood.” I think you will agree we have a deeply rich history at Saint Joseph High School of creating and fostering a camaraderie that our men continue throughout their lives. Highlights in our report include: Three Generations of Saint Joe’s Men - the Tankiewicz story of brotherhood among family and the tradition from generation to generation. Enhanced Virtual Saint Joseph Giving Day - our exponential growth in fundraising on the Feast of Saint Joseph - this interactive, 24-hour event where we celebrate and support the Saint Joe’s Brotherhood. Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony returns with ten individuals and one team newly inducted. Annual Event Review includes Annual Falcon Golf Classic, Inaugural Daniel Anderl Love Is Light 5K Walk/Run, Homecoming, Brothers of the Sacred Heart Bicentennial Celebration Mass, Green Tie Gala and the Father André Coindre Service Award. An interview with Senior Michael Weikum - a profile of the “Saint Joe’s difference”, our formation and brotherhood experience. A Fond Farewell and Thank You to two of our long-serving Partners in Mission, Dr. Martine Gubernat and Mr. Ed Powers. I believe you will share in my pride and hope for the continued success here at Saint Joseph High School as you review the articles and information we have compiled within. Homecoming Falcons Football beat New Brunswick at the Homecoming game October 9, 2021, 38 - 14. Many alumni returned to cheer on the Falcons and enjoy the victory.

The second annual Green Tie Gala returned in November 2021 to a joyful crowd, pleased to honor Brother Rich Leven, S.C. with the Father André Coindre Service Award. Brother Rich took his vows on August 5, 1959 and Saint Joseph High School has been blessed to have his contagious spirit influencing our campus from 1967 to today. He is a true exemplar of the charism of Father André Coindre and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. We salute your love of Jesus and love of man, Brother Rich.

Jerome J. Reso Scholarship Recipient :

Michael Weikum’22 A scholar, a gentleman, an athlete, a devout Catholic, a community volunteer—meet Michael Weikum ’22, the epitome of a Saint Joseph student and the recent recipient of a scholarship awarded by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Michael’s parents, Sebastian and Beata Weikum, Polish immigrants who settled in Old Bridge, New Jersey, believe that the foundation of their younger son’s current and future success would be built upon the Catholic values, academic rigor, and co-curricular excellence that Saint Joe’s offers. Knowing that Michael is a very intelligent and hard-working young man, they recognized that an investment in his high school education would pay dividends via academic preparedness and scholarships. They were correct. On June 15, 2021, Michael and his family were notified that he was named the 2021-2022 recipient of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Jerome J. Reso Scholarship, which covers the full cost of his tuition during his senior year at Saint Joe’s. "I treat this scholarship as a motivational spark, which has proved to me that through dedicated and diligent hard work, each one of us is capable of boundless rewards," Michael said. Living up to his parents’ high expectations as well as his personal high standards, Michael approached his high school career as a buffet of opportunities spread out in front

"When I see my parents make sacrifices for me and my brother, especially incalculable, sleepless nights to keep us afloat and energized to succeed limitlessly, the best way to thank them is for me to give my best effort in all I do," said Michael. he joined Campus Ministry, JusticeworX, and Student Council, as well as the Crew and Volleyball teams. During his subsequent years at Saint Joe’s, he added Model UN, Youth Advisory Council (YAC), Eucharistic Minister, Theatre Company, National Honor Society (NHS), Spanish NHS & Club, Science NHS & League, Math League, Broadcasting Club, Vignette literary magazine, and the Nursing Home Club (the latter of which he founded), creating an extensive list of opportunities to learn, to grow, and to serve the community.

Brand loyalty drives many financial decisions. Coke versus Pepsi? Nike versus Adidas? Chevy versus Ford? Saint Joseph versus… nobody else, according to the Tankiewicz family who, in 1965, made the decision to send Ron ’69 to “that new school in Metuchen” he recalled. “A few of my friends were going there [so] I wanted to try it for at least a year, and the rest is history,” Ron added. Indeed, history was made not only in 1965, but also in 1990 when Ron’s son, Bill ’94, enrolled and then again in 2021 when Ron’s grandson, Braden ’25, started his freshman year. The Tankiewicz family’s academic three-peat is a first at Saint Joe’s.

Ron’s father wanted him to be the first member of the family to attend college, believing that Saint Joe’s would prepare him for the rigors of higher education; his mother wanted him to attend Saint Joe’s in order “to become a gentleman,” Ron said. In retrospect, both parents were correct. “Saint Joe’s provided the foundation and discipline required to succeed in life. I feel that Saint Joe’s, along with the values my parents taught me, has helped me to

live with balance and accountability,” Ron added. Ron views Saint Joe’s as an all-around, top-notch school. “We have a great reputation in academics, athletics, and leadership, along with a strong alumni base,” he said. As a student, Ron worked hard in the classroom and also immersed himself in co-curricular activities, including Student Council, various clubs, intramural sports, and baseball, noting that doing so “was a great way to expand [his] network of friends outside of the classroom.” Ron’s son, Bill, was drawn to Saint Joe’s after hearing his father talk about how the school’s strong academic

Following in his father’s footsteps, Bill also got involved with sports, specifically baseball, basketball, and cross country, which helped him learn to manage his time by balancing his academic work with athletics. He also met many new friends. “My father always talked about Saint Joe’s guys being a close knit group,” Bill said. “I’ve made so many connections and built many relationships through Saint Joe’s. [Any time] I run into a Saint Joe’s graduate or student, it’s an instant connection, truly a brotherhood.”

Braden clearly took notice of the beautiful, 70-acre campus and the sense of brotherhood at the school, and when the time came for him to make a decision about high school, the choice was obvious. “I wanted to go to Saint Joe’s because I knew I would get a good education there, and because my dad and grandfather went there,” said Braden. Jumping right into the co-curricular program as a freshman, Braden participated in Cardboard City via Campus Ministry, and also is involved with the Broadcasting Club. Following the Tankiewicz family tradition, he plans to try out for the baseball team in the spring.

History in the Making

Mr. Ed Powers:

Mr. Edward Powers’s 39-year career as a Saint Joseph history teacher began in 1982 when he was hired by Principal Br. Joseph Holthaus, SC. Because Mr. Powers lived in Metuchen (and still resides there), he knew of Saint Joe’s reputation as a college prep school with good students and good athletes, and thought that he could be a good fit in that environment. Clearly, he was right. "I always felt at home at Saint Joe’s," noted Mr. Powers. During his nearly four-decade tenure, he taught a variety of courses including Sociology, Government & Foreign Affairs, U.S. and World History, and several Advanced Placement history classes. "I always thought of teaching as a vocation, not a job," said Mr. Powers. He also served as the Social Studies Department Chair. Indeed, it was a vocation that he embraced with Mr. Powers at his first year with Saint Joseph enthusiasm and passion, not only in the classroom as a history teacher in 1982. but also as the 36-year coach of the perennially topranked College Bowl team. He also noted that several Saint Joe’s graduates pursued careers in the military as high-ranking leaders. "I was gratified that they became attracted to history and patriotism through my classes," Mr. Powers said. “My hope was to instill in them a desire to care about the history of their country, so I’m very proud of their efforts to try and shape that history," he added. Three Decades of Dedication

Dr. Martine Gubernat I remember walking through the doors of the Main Building in 1990 and being greeted by Br. Ronald Cairns, SC, the Principal at that time. He extended his hand, giving me a firm handshake and a bright smile. His greeting made me feel welcomed and important, heralding a wonderful interview followed shortly after by an offer to join the staff as an English teacher. I accepted excitedly and became a member of the Saint Joseph family. I had only a few years of teaching experience at that time so I was honored that he believed in me, and was determined to live up to his trust by doing my best every day. That was my maxim for the 30 years that I devoted to the students of Saint Joe’s and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

Over those three decades, I maintained a passionate commitment to my students because I felt so rewarded by those moments when a lesson clicked and their eyes Dr. Gubernat with students, 2011 lit up with understanding and clarity. Through teaching students to read literature analytically and to write with intent and focus, I knew that I was empowering them with skills that would prepare them for college, grad school, a career, and life beyond. Getting emails from students who had graduated many years prior was always gratifying, too. I was privileged to have been invited to join a small group of Partners in Mission from other Brothers of the Sacred Heart schools on a pilgrimage to Lyon, France in the summer of 2001 to immerse myself in the history and culture of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

Volunteering for Parents Club events offers a connection to the Brotherhood of the Falcon Family People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, what unites them all is that they find it both challenging and rewarding. For those involved in Saint Joe’s Parents Club, there are many benefits: Make a difference in the lives of your son and his classmates. Give something back to support Saint Joe’s commitment to teaching your son in academics and formation. Spend quality time as part of a team working toward the same goal. Help those who are less fortunate than yourself. Use your knowledge and skills to benefit our students. Socialize and make new friends in your community; share and realize a common goal. Current Parent, Alumni Parent, Falcon Community Friend - All are welcome and essential to the continuity of our brotherhood. Within the Parents Club, Saint Joe’s organizes different themed events to raise funds for NeedBased Financial Assistance and Scholarship Funds, as well as specific projects for additional school resources or improvements. Certain annual events are facilitated through the traditional subgroups of Mothers Club and Fathers Club, but all are invited to participate as he or she wishes.

Dear Friends and Families of Saint Joseph, 60 Years of Brotherhood is perhaps one of the truest statements summarizing why so many dedicate their time and service to Saint Joseph High School. Of course, this Brotherhood is fostered first in our attendance as students, but for many of us it continues in various ways through adulthood. The alumni who serve on the Board of Directors as well as the Board of Trustees of the Foundation, do so out of the Brotherhood and love of Saint Joe’s that is so important to thousands of graduates. This past year that Brotherhood manifested itself in several ways: The Brotherhood from the class of 1971 resulted in the impressive Mission Cross being donated to commemorate the anniversary of their 50th reunion. A Brotherhood of Track and Field athletes from various classes came together to fund and dedicate the Brother Richard Leven, S.C. Wall of Records that is on display now just outside the Maglio Gymnasium. An even larger group of Track alumni were on hand at the Green Tie Gala to honor Brother Rich for his long career as a coach, mentor, and friend. Your Board of Directors is keenly focused on supporting our Principal, Anne Rivera, and our Partners in Mission to continue the great educational experience that young men still want and receive at Saint Joe’s. We do this first and foremost by maintaining the financial stability and strength of the school. To this end, this past year marked perhaps our best year in decades and helps ensure that the Brotherhood will continue well into the future. The Board is also conducting a thorough review of our physical plant and prioritizing capital and maintenance needs over the next several years. With the Brotherhood of Board members and alumni with specialized knowledge in this area, the right priorities are being addressed and our capital resources are being employed judiciously with the long view in mind. At the heart of Saint Joe’s Brotherhood is the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and the mission to see that young men who desire a Saint Joseph High School education can get one even if their families may not be able to afford it. This translates into our tireless efforts to build our resources and provide Need-Based Financial Assistance to students. Fundraising is up both through our Annual Fund and through other campaigns, appeals and events. New scholarships are being created and funded. This work has to and will continue—it is at the very core of our Brotherhood! Atheletics Hall of Fame Class of 2021 The ten individuals and one team inducted into the 2021 Class of the Saint Joseph Athletics Hall of Fame collectively expressed they were Honored, Humbled, Proud and Grateful to be recognized in this way. And reminded them of why going to Saint Joe’s truly formed who they are as individuals in our world. October of 2021 saw an exuberant attendance at our Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony inducting ten individuals and one team. This honor recognizes the respective accomplishments of student-athletes, coaches, athletics administrators, teams, and people who have significantly contributed to the advancement of interscholastic sports at Saint Joseph High School as well as sportsmanship among the Saint Joe’s brotherhood. Unique to the Hall of Fame class of 2021, every decade of student-athletes is represented from the 1970’s to the 2010’s. “One of the important points for the selection committee is to give attention to all champion levels across the different sports,” said Ryan Carter ‘91, Athletics Hall of Fame Committee Chair and past recipient for Ice

Saint Joseph Giving Day :

Rewarding the Class of 1979 Article By John Eppensteiner ‘02 On Saint Joseph Giving Day 2021 we put out a challenge to our alumni – the class with the most donors on this important day would be featured in an article in the next annual report. With 31 members of their class participating, the Class of 1979 came out on top. This came as no surprise, as the Class of 1979 is well known for being one of the most active alumni classes at Saint Joe’s. We interviewed three 1979 grads – Class Chairs Doug Murray and Doug Smith, and Reunion Committee member Bill Pickering – to find out what makes the Class of 1979 unique and a great example for the rest of the Saint Joe’s Brotherhood.

What are your best memories from your time at Saint Joe's? Doug Murray: Memories that stand out are of the dances, sporting events, and Inscape retreats, but what sticks with me today is the camaraderie and the friendships we built. Doug Smith: I enjoy looking back on the relationships that we developed with the Brothers and teachers. Bill Pickering: I loved being part of the school's marching and stage bands (kudos to Art Braga). We played in the orchestra for the drama productions, marched in parades, and even played at the children’s Christmas party that was hosted in the cafeteria. Being of service to others and bringing joy to those we encounter was cultivated at Saint Joe’s. How has the Class of '79 been able to stay so connected over the years? Murray: At a minimum, we always plan to get together every 5 years for a reunion. We have been doing this since we graduated. In preparation for those, we get together for planning dinners with the reunion committee. In addition, we usually add in other events, e.g. when Alonzo Adams was on the cover of the Saint Joe’s TODAY magazine, or

recently for our collective 60th birthdays this past summer. Pickering: The reunions are key to reconnecting with lost friends. At these events I’ve been able to turn acquaintances into long term friendships. Any advice to other classes on reconnecting? Murray: You need a core group of classmates to help get the word out. Fortunately, we have Bill Pickering, Jim Ziemba, Joe Scott, Tom Walsh, Mike Sheehan, Fred James and Bill Hercek on our committee. We welcome others that are interested in getting involved. Smith: We strongly recommend a committee approach, and to have a broader group that facilitates connecting with classmates not connected to the immediate group. Pickering: Keep hosting events! The more opportunities you can create for classmates to reconnect the closer you will be - for example, a day at Monmouth Race Track, or class-specific bar nights, etc. Are there lessons you learned at Saint Joe's that have carried throughout your life? Murray: First and foremost were faith, family, discipline and accountability.

Smith: Saint Joe’s provided a blueprint for personal development which has led to continued success and happiness. Pickering: Absolutely! I cherish the deeper faith in Christ that I developed. The Brothers offered opportunities to understand and expand my faith, learn its history, and embrace Christ’s teachings. My time at Saint Joe’s nurtured my core values - having respect for others, regardless if they agree with my opinions; service to the community; and having empathy for others. What do you hope for the future of Saint Joe's? Murray: I want to see Saint Joe’s continue to thrive as a top rated college preparatory school in New Jersey. Pickering: I hope the school will be able to continue, grow and thrive. I’m proud to have sent my son there (Class of 2015). We often talk about how Saint Joe’s gave him an opportunity to reinvent himself and develop into the man he is today.

Forever Falcons by Bill Pickering ‘79 Before the coronavirus outbreak, a group of friends from 1979 and 1980 were supposed to meet up for a baseball road trip to see the Mets play. Well, COVID ruined those plans, but by reconnecting with these guys, something remarkable happened. The isolation that people were experiencing during the pandemic didn’t happen to us. Why? Because once we started up a group text the banter began. I’d look down at my phone mid-day and see 80+ messages. We started hosting weekly Zoom calls to see each other, swap stories, discuss the news and catch up on each of our families. The Zoom calls morphed into Trivial Pursuit matches, a March Madness bracket, and movie and TV ranking sessions (Best Seinfeld episode, anyone?) The camaraderie we shared over the next year was essential to our mental health. It all came to a head when a couple of the guys announced their cancer had returned (Vinny Corsaro ‘79 and Gene Corrigan ‘80). Our weekly Zooms were something they’d comment on that kept them going - staying connected. Ever the Falcons, what did the rest of us do? We supported our buddies the best way we knew how we had custom t-shirts made. Being Class of ‘79, we all had plenty of memories going to clubs to see bands. Everyone in the group is a HUGE Bruce Springsteen fan, so we arranged to meet at the Stone Pony. As luck would have it, the Pony was raising funds by “renting” their billboard out for particular messages. We bought a slot and took pictures of our group, wearing our shirts in front of the marquee, supporting our buddies’ battle with cancer. That was a huge bright spot for everyone involved. Our friends and their families all enjoyed our effort. Last summer, we all met up in Asbury Park to celebrate their victory over the disease. Shortly after, we took our road trip to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame. We had a whiffle ball game, ping pong tournament, corn hole match, and played cards - all the things you do to celebrate the friends you made at the most incredible high school in New Jersey. My classmates are more than that - they’re my brothers.

This interactive, 24-hour fundraising event celebrates and supports the Saint Joe’s Brotherhood!
