Rancho Sahuarita’s 25th Anniversary Celebration Continues with a Standout Summer Kickoff

For 25 years, Rancho Sahuarita has been a community where special holidays and meaningful moments can always be enjoyed close to home. As the summer season kicks off, this year’s Memorial Day weekend events highlighted how the community’s shared spaces and ongoing traditions make the everyday moments for residents memorable and stand out in special ways.

The holiday weekend began with the annual reopening of the Splash Park, a highly anticipated tradition that Rancho Sahuarita families look forward to each year. Residents were delighted to spend their Saturday enjoying water activities, games, food truck vendors and various raffles to start the summer season.

The festivities continued Sunday evening with another resident favorite, Movies Under the Stars. Events like this have become a familiar part of the community, offering families a simple way to spend quality time together without having to travel far.

On Monday morning, the community gathered for the annual Sunrise Remembrance to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. With many residents connected to the Armed Forces, the ceremony carried special meaning and showcased the community’s appreciation for those who serve and have served.

These events perfectly capture the spirit of Rancho Sahuarita’s ongoing 25th anniversary

celebration. Throughout the anniversary year, the community has celebrated each 25th day of the month with themed giveaways and activities to recognize the milestone. May’s celebration featured a summer-themed snow cone giveaway, offering a refreshing treat to cool off and close out the festivities.

As Rancho Sahuarita continues celebrating its 25th anniversary year, residents can look forward to this season of summer programming and family-friendly events. With an assortment of activities designed for all ages, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

STELLARIUM

OF THE MONTH

Stellarium is a free, opensource virtual planetarium that runs directly in your web browser. It shows a realistic 3D sky exactly as you would see it from Sahuarita with the naked eye, binoculars, or a telescope. You can identify planets, constellations, and even track the International Space Station in real-time.

June brings some of the clearest night skies in Arizona before the monsoon season begins. It’s a perfect, free way for families to head into the backyard and learn about the stars without needing expensive equipment. It turns a warm summer evening into an interactive science lesson.

HIKING SPOTLIGHT: MOUNT WRIGHTSON TRAIL – SUPER TRAIL

As Sahuarita temperatures climb into the triple digits, experienced hikers know to head up — and Mount Wrightson delivers. At 9,453 feet, it’s the highest peak in Southern Arizona and offers a dramatically different climate than the desert floor below. The Super Trail is the preferred route for its scenic switchbacks and

manageable grade.

Location: Santa Rita Mountains, via Madera Canyon Rd., Green Valley

The Experience: Cool pine and oak forests replace saguaros as you climb, with sweeping views of the Santa Cruz Valley, Tucson, and on clear days, Mexico. The

full summit hike is approximately 16 miles round trip with 4,000+ feet of elevation gain — plan for an early 5 a.m. start and carry at least 3–4 liters of water. Shorter out-and-back options to Josephine Saddle offer a rewarding half-day hike with far less commitment.

Best Time to Go: June mornings before 6 a.m. Start early, turn around by noon.

Strawberry Moon – Full Moon: June 11

June’s full moon, traditionally called the Strawberry Moon, rises at its fullest on the evening of June 11. Named by Indigenous peoples to mark the strawberry harvest season, it glows with a warm amber hue as it rises near the horizon. Look east just after sunset for the most dramatic view.

Summer Solstice: June 21

The longest day of the year arrives on June 21, marking the official

start of summer. After sunset, the sky stays twilight-lit later than any other night of the year. It’s a perfect evening to sit outside, watch the stars emerge slowly, and appreciate Sahuarita’s remarkably dark skies. The Milky Way core becomes increasingly visible in the southeast as the night deepens.

Viewing Tip: Head to a spot away from neighborhood lighting — the open desert edges of Sahuarita offer excellent conditions. Bring a blanket and give your eyes 15–20 minutes to fully adjust to the dark.

End of School Year Address

The 2025-26 School Year is officially history. And, it was truly a year to remember in many ways.

First, many program successes were achieved. These include a fifth consecutive Arizona State Wrestling Championship for Sahuarita HS, NJROTC qualifying for Navy Nationals, a tenth State Dance Championship for the Walden Grove PAC Dance Team, seven Career Technical Education (CTE) programs scored in the Top 20 statewide in the Technical Skills Assessment, forty students were honored with selection to the Southern Arizona Regional Honor Band, Orchestra and Choir, and a second place National finish for the Walden Grove HS Academic Decathlon Team.

The Sahuarita HS band is getting ready to travel to Philadelphia this summer, to represent our community and State in America's Semiquincentennial Birthday Parade, celebrating 250 years of our Nation's Independence. This is a tremendous honor!

This graduating class of 2026 earned over $19M in postsecondary scholarships, all time high! We also had the first ever Commencement Exercises for Sahuarita Digital Pathways Academy, our fully accredited, fully online, School. We continue to have success in our graduates gaining admission to highly selective universities. This year, that includes the University of Notre Dame, University of Southern California, and the United States Coast Guard Academy.

Second, many faculty and staff members were honored for excellence. Ben Garland (SHS Instrumental Music Director) and Becky Hill (Anza Trail teacher) were honored as semifinalists in the Arizona Teacher of the Year competition. Furthermore, our own Tiffani Jaseph (Copper View Special Education Teacher) was named Arizona's Teacher of the year. She has done a great job serving as the ambassador of our State's public schools and the teaching profession. The Teacher of the Year semifinalists were

just named for 2027 and Sahuarita had three semifinalists. They include Jana Turner (Sopori School Reading Teacher), Kalleanah Smith (Anza Trail teacher), and Yolanda Serveniuk (Anza Trail teacher). Sara Mora (Wrightson Ridge CTE Teacher) was recognized with the Raytheon Leader in Education Award. We are truly fortunate to have highly qualified, tirelessly dedicated, and student-centered teachers and staff.

Third, we continue working with intentionality and resolve to deliver high quality, on budget projects to enhance the physical schools and resources available to deliver our mission of student success. We opened a new $11M wing at Walden Grove HS. This new area supports fine arts, special education, sports medicine, aviation, multimedia arts, and other career and technical education programs. The new Performing Arts Center is now under construction on the campus of Walden Grove HS. We are in the midst of a library remodel at both comprehensive high schools, and a cafeteria remodel at Sahuarita Primary School, which should be done by the end of the first semester. This summer also sees major renovation to the chiller unit at Sahuarita HS, major improvements to the District Auditorium, and several playground and courtyard enhancements at multiple schools. You may have also seen the beautiful

new, big, graphic embedded jumbotron style scoreboards installed at both WGHS and SHS Stadiums, enhancing athletic and other program experiences for our students and fans.This represents a collaborative partnership with ICCU Credit Union, and exemplifies the Sahuarita WINS! way of finding common ground and shared purpose. We truly remain tirelessly committed to honoring the public's trust in the investment in our schools, and delivering the highest quality opportunity for success to each and all of our students.

This fall, the Sahuarita community will have an opportunity to renew the commitment to the maintenance and operations override. This local investment in our schools goes back to the 1980. It provides continuation of local support to specific programs that our community has said are vital parts to a great education. They include smaller class sizes, K-12 physical education programs, K-12 school counselors, music programs in elementary, middle and high school, NJROTC leadership development programs, security staff, and maintenance support personnel. These programs intentionally correlate to the level of success and program excellence seen in the culminating secondary programs at the high school level. Excellence truly is a K-12 intentional and collective effort and community investment. Furthermore, this override renewal is not anticipated to raise anybody's school tax rate. Through intentional and methodical debt service and payment, sound budget management, and the continued growth of our community, we are continuing to achieve and maintain stable and steady school tax rates for our community.

There is truly a spirit of community that joins us together in shared purpose and belief that we can do more together, joining our resources, ideas, and shared energy, in mutual benefit to education , workforce development, economic growth, and overall quality of life. Together we will continue to make a difference!

Summer Salad with Mint Lime Dressing

Cool, refreshing, and ready in minutes, a summer staple for Southern Arizona evenings.Ingredients:

Ingredients:

• 4 cups cubed seedless watermelon

• 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

• 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced

• 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, torn

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• Juice of 1 lime

• Salt & black pepper to taste

• Optional: arugula or mixed greens as a base

Instructions:

1. Prep: Cube watermelon and slice red onion. Arrange on a platter or in a wide bowl.

2. Layer: Scatter crumbled feta and red onion over watermelon.

3. Dress: Whisk together olive oil, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Drizzle over salad.

4. Finish: Top with torn fresh mint leaves just before serving.
