"This holiday season, my wife and I have been blessed to learn that both of our daughters and their husbands are expecting babies in 2026, within about five weeks of each other this summer. In my mind, I’ve already fast-forwarded to 2031, when these little ones will start kindergarten, and even 2044, when they will foreseeably graduate from high school. In this era of exponential change, technological advancements, and geopolitical shifts around the world, I can’t help but wonder what their world will look like, and how we can continue as public institutions to prepare the next generation for success and citizenship in such a world.

And yet, in a world of unprecedented change, there is a constant. Public education continues to be a great public investment in advancing the American Dream of individual opportunity, preparing young people for citizenship in a democratic society, and advancing the workforce and economic future of our country. And the cornerstone of our public schools in America is the local control and governance of each community, working together to meet local needs. I am grateful for the spirit of community that defines Sahuarita, joined with purpose and intentionality in a belief that we do more by finding common ground and working together than if any of us goes it alone.

The year 2025 produced much validation and many favorable outcomes and overt indicators of success. First, we honor the public’s trust in advancing our 2023 bond objectives.

We opened the year with a new traffic signal at the entryway to Walden Grove HS, a collaborative effort with our friends at the Town of Sahuarita. More recently, our Town friends improved a signal just outside Sahuarita HS to support more efficient and safe traffic flow in that rather busy area of our town and school district. So far this year, we have completed two new classroom spaces in the Early Childhood Center, expanding opportunities for preschool-age youngsters to get a positive head start on school readiness and success. At Wrightson Ridge K-8 School, there are now seven new classroom spaces to support growth in regular education, special education, and career and technical education. The classrooms at Sahuarita Primary School (SPS) have brand-new cabinets and millwork. Even though that building is 70 years old, the classrooms are modern and updated.

recognition of two outstanding high school educators, Ben Garland from Sahuarita HS (Instrumental Music) and Angela Aguilar from Walden Grove HS (Mathematics). They received the coveted University of Arizona Outstanding Secondary Educator Award for Excellence at halftime of a UA basketball game. In November, Sara Mora from Wrightson Ridge K-8 School (career and technical education) received the Raytheon-Tucson Values Teachers Leader in Excellence Award. And our own Tiffani Jaseph from Copper View Elementary School has been named the 2026 Arizona Teacher of the Year. She is the ambassador and voice of Arizona’s public school educators across Arizona and America. We are so proud! And these awards reflect upon our community’s support for teaching excellence through commitment to competitive salaries, professional development, and high-quality programs.

Indeed, the greatest investment we make is that which we invest in people. This last year, we invested further in safety coordination at the district level by asking Kreston Elchert, Assistant Principal at Walden Grove HS, to lead safety planning and readiness efforts for the district. We have made significant progress in the formalization of our Emergency Operations Plan, training for staff, and securing resources, including vehicle donations from the Town of Sahuarita, supporting safety efforts and visibility. Recently, Mr. Elchert and Athletic Trainer Natosha Booth were credited with saving a man’s life when the AIA referee suffered a major medical episode during a game. I am grateful for the abilities and character of the people who come to work each day in Sahuarita and their unwavering dedication to the mission of working as a team to help every student succeed.

The return on investment in our schools and programs continues to yield promising results. Our last graduating class generated over $18M in scholarships for postsecondary education, an all-time record. Thirty of our graduates have taken advantage of the first two years of the Pima FirstSahuarita WINS! Scholarship, providing full tuition support to our alumni who pursue postsecondary success at Pima Community College. The CTE culinary arts program distinguished itself by earning 2nd Place in the AZ People’s Choice category of the prestigious Harvest Moon statewide culinary arts competition in Phoenix. Their entry featured Wagyu beef sliders, kimchi-seasoned frites, and yuzu-peach milkshakes with candied bacon, and they were a big success. In music, almost forty SUSD student musicians from both high schools received high recognition through the competitive Southern Arizona Regional Honor Band, Orchestra, and Choir. Our NJROTC Battalion earned the Unit of the Year honor among the Unit 20 Region for the second year in a row. This region encompasses multiple states, including Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, and parts of Texas. The Walden Grove Academic Decathlon team achieved fourth place in the nation (Division I) of the US Academic Decathlon. Both high school dance teams achieved competitive excellence, winning recognition and respective State Titles, and the Sahuarita HS wrestling team achieved its fourth consecutive AIA Arizona State Championship.

They are currently chasing their fifth consecutive state title. Thanks to our own Sahuarita GV Chamber of Commerce, we have launched the new ElevateEdAZ initiative to provide full-time advisors and support for the advancement of high school student internships, career advising, and postsecondary readiness. Again, this is the Sahuarita WINS way!

This first semester of 2025–26 also saw the ribbon-cutting of a brand-new $11M, ten-classroom wing at Walden Grove HS, a partnership with the State Facility Board and Pima JTED. It contains state-of-the-art space in various Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, including aviation technology, health professions, instrumental music, multimedia arts, and a wrestling/athletics facility. And the entire exterior of Anza Trail K-8 School has a brandnew facelift through fresh paint and weatherization, supporting effectiveness and long-term use. This past fall, we opened two new Family Resource Centers: one on the main campus, and also one on the Sopori School campus. These centers provide convenient access and vital service and support to families in need of basic life supplies such as clothing, health and hygiene items, shoes, and food. Thanks to Valley Assistance Services and Sahuarita Food Bank for your common and shared investment in making these programs succeed.

As we turn the corner on the current school year, there is much more to look forward to, and it all goes back to our spirit of community, common ground, and collaboration. Construction is expected to commence this spring on a brand-new, 475-seat Performing Arts Center on the campus of Walden Grove HS, along with 194 additional parking spaces just south of the athletic complex there. The Sahuarita Primary School is getting a cafeteria center remodeled with the goal of serving lunches on-site, and sparing our youngest youngsters from the daily trek to the main cafeteria. It will also benefit Sahuarita Intermediate School and Sahuarita Middle School by providing additional flexibility and access to the main cafeteria, helping both schools with schedule planning for success. Both comprehensive high schools are getting library remodels with the goal of creating a modern 21stcentury learning center environment. Furthermore, we have made significant investments in physical education weight rooms and performance training center system equipment upgrades. None of these transformational and visionary outcomes can happen without the shared community commitment and investment to making our public schools the very best that they can be. This spring, specifically Feb 5–7, will see the return of the district musical theater production, a joint effort between all high schools. This year, the show will be The Little Mermaid, and we can all look forward to a great production!

Speaking of the performing arts, I hope you have heard that our SHS band has been honored with an invitation to march in the Salute to Independence Parade in Philadelphia this July 2026, as part of the 250th birthday celebration of our country. Our 101-member Marching Mustangs will be representing our community, state, and country in this once-ina-lifetime event. There are many ways that our local community members can help lighten the heavy financial burden associated with such a special opportunity. I have no doubt that this amazing community will rally behind our SHS band, together, to get them to Philadelphia for this amazing honor and educational experience on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. That is just how we do things in Sahuarita. In fact, I just received a $5,000 commitment from CORE Construction to support this effort. As always, success is a team sport, and together, we will get them to Philadelphia.

Yes, these are challenging times. No doubt you’ve read about growth slowdowns, school closures in neighboring districts, and the proliferation of market-based so-called reforms that whittle away at the foundation and guiding principles of the public education system—a system that for hundreds of years has evolved to be a vital institution in advancing the American dream and associated ideals of freedom, opportunity, and economic prosperity. We must adapt and overcome, and we are doing that. For example, we are currently launching multiple programs designed to build and develop a future-ready cadre of future teachers, principals, and school district leaders. This includes our new NAU Southern AZ Leadership Cohort, Aspire leadership training program, Pima Community College BA program, and UA Pathways to Teaching, in helping us to tap and develop our local talent pool, find common ground, and build our future together with shared intentionality and purpose.

Finally, the end of this year will bring us again to consider the renewal of our maintenance and operations override. This local community initiative, in place for over 20 years, provides local community investment in programs and objectives that we believe as a community will continue to define and enhance a high-quality education for every child and our mission of student success for all. This includes K-12 fine arts programs, including band, music, orchestra, and choral music. It also includes K-12 physical education, grades 6–12 Career and Technical Education (CTE), safety and security staff, interscholastic athletics programs in grades 6–12, K-12 Master’s level school counselors in all schools, class size management, and facility operations staff. This continues to be done while intentionally striving for steady and consistent tax rates to the greatest extent possible. It is not a mere coincidence that our programs, students, and staff continue to shine brightly in classrooms,

• 2 cups sweet potato, diced

• ½ cup red lentils

• 1 small onion, diced

Arrange on a sheet pan, season, and bake at 400°F for 14–16 minutes until salmon flakes easily.
