LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. To the Ed Golf can be a strange game. It can transform the coolest person into an nervous wreck in the space of only a couple of shots. As everyone knows, golf is a much easier game when nobody is watching you. When you are on your own everything just feels right, your confidence is there and your breathing is even. However this all changes, of course, as soon as somebody starts watching you. Unexpectedly, your grip tightens up, your feet start moving, and your breathing virtually stops. When this occurs, you need to step back and remember to keep breathing. Playing good, consistent golf has a lot to do with your ability to remain calm and relaxed. When you begin to feel your heart beating at a rate of knots, you need to take some deep breaths to slow it down. Correct breathing can alleviate all kinds of issues (in golf and life). We all experience stress both on and off the golf course. When this ensues, it is important to focus on your breathing to calm yourself down. Once your heart begins to beat at a normal rate, you feel more relaxed, and you find yourself able to focus again on the task at hand.

For golfers, this would be standing on the first tee with everybody watching you from the club house balcony. Remember to take a step back and take a deep breath, it works wonders! RHODES HOLDS OFF SA’S ALEXANDER TO WIN JOBURG LADIES OPEN England’s Mimi Rhodes overcame a strong challenge from South Africa’s Casandra Alexander to claim back-to-back wins on the Ladies European Tour in the Joburg Ladies Open at Modderfontein Golf Club in April.
In a thrilling back-nine duel, Alexander narrowly missed a birdie putt on the 18th to force a playoff with her English opponent. The South African signed for a final round of 69 to finish second on 13 under par.
Rhodes showed her composure when she made a tricky up-and-down for par at the last to close with a 71 and win on 14 under par overall in this Sunshine Ladies Tour co-sanctioned tournament.
Germany’s Helen Briem made a strong charge through the field with her 68 to take third place on 11 under par.

It’s a dream come true to be playing so well so early in my career. I’m honestly lost for words. Rhodes took a three-shot lead into the final round of a tournament reduced to 54 holes because of the weather. The

final round was an incredible battle between Rhodes and Alexander, with the South African twice narrowing the gap to just one shot and Rhodes responding accordingly. With a one-shot lead playing the18th, Rhodes overshot the green with her approach and Alexander put her approach to about eight feet. Rhodes produced a masterful chip that left her with a tap-in for par, and Alexander missed her birdie putt. “I was just thinking one shot at a time. I’d been chipping well all day and the

HOLLICK CLOSES OUT SUNSHINE TOUR SEASON WITH VICTORY IN DNI TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTED BY RMB Michael Hollick ended the current Sunshine Tour season in the same way he started it with a victory in the DNi Tour Championship presented by RMB at the Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate, and on a day when Daniel van Tonder was also crowned the winner of the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy for the 2024/25 season, and Altin van der Merwe won the Fortress Rookie of the Year award. Hollick closed with a sublime 64 to win on 19 under par, one clear of Jacques Kruyswijk and George Coetzee.

When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further? Golf has always played a significant role in our family, and after finishing school, my sister and I pursued studies in greenkeeping as a backup plan while aspiring to become professional golfers. However, as I progressed through my studies, I found myself increasingly drawn to the world of greenkeeping. What began as a secondary path soon evolved into a genuine passion. You have been very fortunate to have such a mentor in your father, but he was also a provincial golfer, did you ever thought of playing golf as a career? Absolutely, yes! I’m quite sure my father placed a golf club in my hands before I could even walk. I was honored to receive my Junior Springbok colors and had the incredible opportunity to spend three years competing on the IGT Challenge Tour. During that time, I also earned two invitations to play on the Big Easy Tour—experiences that truly shaped my journey in the sport.

Are there any precautionary measures that can be taken to prevent certain areas from flooding? On the course, our primary focus is managing the slope back to the river, as standing water can be detrimental to the turf. Fortunately, our maintenance plan has proven to be highly effective over the past three years. We take great pride in our commitment to excellence and consistently strive to uphold our motto: “Back in play in a day.” What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at Irene CC to other parts of the country? You are at Irene CC, with the Hennops River meandering through the golf courses, what are your biggest challenges especially when the river is in flood? One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced was keeping the team motivated after experiencing two to three floods within the span of a single week. Despite

Absolutely—it’s incredibly important to have the right equipment to deliver the level of detail our work demands. Precision is key in what we do, and having the correct tools makes it significantly easier to maintain a golf course that looks tournament-ready 365 days a year. What are the big differences for tournament setup as opposed to normal day to day setup? For golfers, the most noticeable change is usually the putting surface—especially as green speeds increase to over 12 on the Stimpmeter and the greens begin to firm up. From a greenkeeper’s perspective, it’s all about the finer details: the precision of the striping and how well the course presents, whether through the camera lens or to the eye. That visual impact is key.
Additionally, we’ve adopted a balanced course setup strategy by dividing pin placements into three categories: easy, medium, and difficult—ensuring a fair and enjoyable experience for players of all skill levels. Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf courses to close one day per week for maintenance? No, I’m a strong believer that golf courses should remain open, especially considering the high cost of maintenance in South Africa. Mondays are typically quiet, which means you can still generate some income while having ample time to carry out maintenance tasks. This approach allows for essential upkeep without sacrificing potential revenue. How important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately vs only a couple of days or week later? It’s extremely important—pitch marks need to be repaired within a few hours, otherwise the grass can begin to die. That’s why we consistently encourage all golfers to help both the greenkeeping team and themselves by taking a moment to repair their pitch marks. It makes a significant difference in maintaining healthy, smooth greens for everyone to enjoy. People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how?

Bunkers are always a challenging aspect, as there are no definitive guidelines on how to maintain them— only recommendations. Commonly referred to as penalty areas, the consistency of a bunker depends on decisions made by the greenkeeper and committee. Key considerations include determining the right amount of sand, the desired firmness or softness, and whether the lie should be more favorable than in the fairway, or if it should truly present a penalty. Altin van der Merwe celebrated a memorable rookie season on the Sunshine Tour in which he came close to a maiden victory, and was crowned the Fortress Rookie of the Year which earned him a R200 000 bonus. “It means everything to me. I’ve been looking forward to playing pro golf and the Sunshine Tour for the last seven years, so I could never have asked for a better first season. I’ve learnt a couple of lessons this season so I’m looking forward to next season,” said Van Der Merwe.
Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, was also delighted with a season that truly showcased the growing strength of the Tour. “It’s been an incredible season with so many memorable moments and an array of incentives for our golfers from all of our wonderful partners. That’s what we keep working for – to create those pathways for our professionals to further their careers. We’re grateful for all of our partners for their support. “I’d also like to thank everybody who played a role in making this such a successful season, from the Nomads who help with the scoring at all of our tournaments, to SuperSport and the media, to GolfRSA and the other golf bodies we work so closely with, and to all who play a part in this amazing product that is South African golf.”
It was a celebration of another incredible season on the Sunshine Tour and which was praised by Gayton McKenzie, the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture who attended the final prize giving of the season. “You look at everybody involved in this Sunshine Tour event, and this is what makes us a great country – all of the corporates who are backing our sport. GARRICK HIGGO TRIUMPHS AGAIN ON PGA TOUR. Garrick Higgo took advantage of Joel Dahmen’s late meltdown to win the windy Corales Puntacana Championship last month for his second PGA Tour victory. Higgo got an unexpected share of the lead when Dahmen missed a 1-foot par putt on the par-3 17th for his second straight bogey, and won when Dahmen couldn’t get an 8-foot par attempt to fall on the par-4 18th. Playing in the group ahead of Dahmen, Higgo also bogeyed the 17th, then parred the 18th for an even-par 72 and a

14-under 274 total. Dahmen shot 76 after having led at the end of each of the first three rounds in the event he won in 2021 for his lone tour title. Higgo, a 25-year-old left-hander from South Africa, also won the 2021 Palmetto Championship at Congaree. The former UNLV player earned a two-year exemption with the victory but doesn’t get a spot in the Masters. Dahmen tied for second with Alejandro Tosti (68), Keith Mitchell (71), Jeremy Paul(72) and Michael Thorbjornsen (73). Thorbjornsen missed a 4-foot par putt on 18.

(Photo by Tyrone Winfield/Sunshine Tour) George Coetzee claimed the 15th title of his Sunshine Tour career with a three-stroke victory in the Serengeti Playoffs on Sunday, and with it also secured the first win of the new Courier Guy Playoffs Series. Coetzee signed for a solid 69 to win on 19 under par at Serengeti Estates. Daniel van Tonder finished second on 16 under par with a final round of 69. After a slow and steady start with regular pars on the first seven holes, Coetzee made an eagle on the par-five eighth hole and added a further two birdies and just one bogey that was enough to ensure him a victory.

“It was a very busy day for me in my head. I tried to stay in my lane and do what I have to do, follow my routines and to follow my gameplan to play as well as possible. Things worked today, but you never know. It took me like five holes just to feel like it was me playing, and around the middle of the round it started to feel a little better,” he said. For Coetzee, after returning from injury and celebrating the birth of his child in this time, this victory was very special. “You want to do stuff that your kids can be proud of, like I am proud of my

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments. Ilse Marais General Manager - Rustenburg Golf Club You worked in the banking sector before moving to the golf industry, what made you choose this career? After spending several years in the banking industry, I realised I wanted to persue a career that combined my passion for golf with my skills in finance and management. The opportunity to become the General Manager at Rustenburg Golf Club was the perfect fit, it allowed me to step into a leadership role where I could make a real impact, drive growth and be part of a community I care deeply about. While in the banking sector, did you play golf at all? While I was working in the banking sector I didn’t actively play golf, but I always had a deep love and appreciation for the sport. I followed it closely, admired the discipline and strategy involved and being around the golfing environment whenever I had the chance. That passion is what eventually inspired me to make the career shift into the golf industry. As a women was it difficult for you to make inroads in this industry? Yes, as a women breaking into the golf industry that did come with its challenges. It is a space that has traditionally been male dominated, so earning respect and building credibility took time and

perseverance. But I have always believed that passion, hard work and professionalism speaks louder that anything else. Over time I have been able to prove myself, build strong relationships and show that leadership in this industry isn’t defined by gender, but by vision and results. Describe a typical workday for you at Rustenburg GC? A typical workday for me at Rustenburg Golf Club is a mix of planning, problem solving and people interaction. I usually start the day early by checking in with the green keeper and club house teams to make sure everything is running smoothly then I’ll review the bookings and upcoming events and strategize to improve it. Much of my day involves meetings with staff, suppliers and our members. Whether it is to discuss operations, finances or new ideas to inhance the clubs experiences. I also spend time on admin, budgeting and marketing. No two days are the same but that is what keeps it exciting and rewarding. With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to the club? With consumers being more mindful of their spending, our approach at Rustenburg Golf Club is to focus on offering real value and a welcoming

experience. We are working on flexable membership options, pay as you play specials and family friendly packages that make golf more affordable. We are also improving our facilities and customer services to ensure that every visit feels worth while. Community events, beginner golfer clinics and social golf days are part of our plan to draw new faces and creative a vibrant inclusive club atmosphere. The goal is to make the club feel more than just a place to play but a place to belong! Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Rustenburg GC? Slow play is defnitely a challenge in todays game at Rustenburg Golf Club we take it seriously because it effects the overall experience for everyone. We manage it in a few key ways :

Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? Yes absolutely, being the General Manager at a golf club like Rustenburg Golf Club does require me to be available on weekends, evenings and holidays. Golf is very much a lifestyle sport and most of our peak activities are when others are off work. Whether its tournaments, social events or simply ensuring everything runs smoothly. It definatly puts a demand on my personal life, but it is a commitment I embraced because I am passionate about what I do.
We educate our members and visitors about pace of play with clear signage and friendly reminders from our marshals. We also implemented realistic tee time intervals to prevent overcrowding. For competitions we make sure players are aware of time guidelines and use formats that maintain flow, it’s all about striking a balance and keeping things enjoyable without making players feel rushed.
What are your short & long term goals?
This year you are celebrating the 50th edition of the legendary Orange Blossom golf tournament, what makes this such a unique tournament?
Long term goals, I am aiming to solidify Rustenburg Golf Clubs position as a leading destination for golfers not just in the region but on a broader scale. Ultimately I want to ensure the club remains a hub for both avid golfers and new comers with the focus on fostering community, traditions and excellance.
Celebrating the 50th addition of the Orange Blossom is a huge milestone for Rustenburg Golf Club. And what makes it so unique is the tradition, atmosphere and community spirit behind it. It’s more than just a golf tournament, It’s a celebration of the clubs history and the people who shaped it over the years. Players return year after year because of the great comradery, competative but friendly vibe and the effort we put into making the event memorable. The Orange Blossom has a special energy that truly sets it apart. Where does the name Orange Blossom come from?
Short term goals, I am focussed on enhancing the overall member experience at Rustenburg Golf Club that includes impoving facilities, offering more flexable membership options and boosting participation in our events. I also want to continue driving growth into the pro shop and increase the clubs overall visability within the community.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? In my free time I enjoy relaxing and recharging especially with activities that help me disconnect from work. I enjoy gyming to ensure my mind and body stays healthy. I love spending time with my family and friends just to unwind a bit. Its all about maintaining balance to stay energized and inspired. I believe life is a journey which is filled with lessons, moments and memories …. Therefore I live by the motto “ live everyday as if it is your last with a grateful heart “.

• Our mystery golfer was born on September 26, 1934, in London, England. • While never becoming one of the leading stars of global golf, and having never won a major, he was remarkable for his consistency, and even more for his durability. • He had a successful career in European golf, winning 29 important tournaments between 1956 and 1982. • After reaching 50, he won a further 14 important Senior’s tournaments between 1985 and 2002, winning his final European Seniors Tour event at the age of 67. • He played in eight Ryder Cup matches between 1961 and 1977. • He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000. • He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1982 New Year Honours.
