LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader.

I’ve been doing a lot more walking lately, not entirely by choice. My car decided it had done enough after nearly 150,000km and gracefully bowed out. We still have my wife’s car, but since she’s at work during the day and I work from home, my legs have officially become my weekday transport system.

Yesterday, I walked about 2km to the post office during my lunch break and noticed something surprising: details along that route I’d never seen before.

It got me thinking about golf.

When you ride in a cart, you cut down the time it takes to reach your ball. Courses love that because it keeps play moving. But that lost time matters. Walking gives you space to think, to consider your next shot, the club selection, the pin position, what the wind’s doing. Sure, you can figure all that out when you hop out of the cart, but it’s often rushed. And rushed decisions in golf rarely end well.

In the end, walking does more than just give you exercise. It forces you to slow down. You notice things, on the street and on the course, that you’d otherwise miss speeding past. And beyond any impact on your scorecard, that’s one of the most rewarding parts of the game: time outdoors, fully present, appreciating the surroundings that make golf what it is.

Regards

I really enjoyed this. There’s something quietly profound about being forced to slow down, even if it starts with a car giving up the ghost at 150,000km.

Your point about walking the golf course hits home. There’s a rhythm to walking that you just don’t get in a cart. The few extra minutes between shots isn’t wasted time, it’s thinking time. It’s where decisions settle, where you process the last shot and prepare for the next one.

Maybe your car breaking down was less bad luck and more an unexpected coach in disguise.

Regards

CASEY JARVIS WINS MAGICAL KENYA OPEN FOR MAIDEN DP WORLD TOUR TITLE

The South African, who had shared the lead after each of the first three rounds, had six birdies and rounded off his round of 62 with a second eagle of the day to win The Magical Kenyan Open by three strokes.

The 22-year-old said: “It’s amazing, I’ve actually never won in front of my dad before, I’ve wanted to win in front of him so badly, and to finally do it when he’s here, I can’t explain to you the emotions.

“I was so nervous coming down the last two so yeah, it feels great.

“There’s not many words that can describe the feeling, I also wish my mum was here but she’s back home in the UK. But it’s unbelievable, he’s been with me through the ups, through the downs.

“I know this moment doesn’t happen often so we’re going to celebrate it properly tonight. Only a four-hour flight to Joburg – I feel sorry for the people on the plane because I feel like it’s going to be pretty loud!”

Bryant’s birdie left him second outright ahead of Du Plessis and then Laporta. Jacob Skov Olesen’s 65 left him 19 under along with Kimsey, whose fellow Englishman Matthew Jordan shot 62 to vault up to seventh.

Defending champion

Jacques Kruyswijk followed three straight 67s with a 65 to finish 14 under and securely in the top 20.

Meanwhile there were rounds of 63 for Romain Langasque, 64 for Sebastian Söderberg and a bogey-free 65 to secure

a six-under-par finish for Njoroge Kibugu, the smiling Kenyan sensation who thrilled the home crowd on Friday with an eagle to make the cut.

The Mental Game

The Mental Game - The importance of a Pre-shot

A good pre-shot routine is one of the most important performance tools in golf. Whether you are a beginner or an elite player, a consistent routine helps you manage nerves, improve focus, and produce repeatable swings under pressure. The key to both is in keeping your routine simple and more importantly consistent.

what we don’t rehearsing what execute with confidence.

Tip brought to you by

The first and most important part of a pre-shot routine begins before you even grab a club. This is the decision making process. First, assess the situation, get the basics of distance, wind direction and lie right. Then identify the correct landing zone and corresponding specific target based on your shot shape. Your target must be specific, not just “the fairway” or “the green,” but a precise target such as a leaf, branch or bunker rake. Taking time to pick the right club and target has a direct influence on execution. Golfers always try convince themselves to commit over shots, this is only possible if you are comfortable with the club and target you have chosen.

Next comes visualisation. Picture the ball’s entire flight, the launch, curve, trajectory, landing, and roll. Engage as many senses as possible. See it, feel it, and even hear the strike. We often go into the ball still thinking about

have made a decision, visualised and done your swings if any, you must now shift to a reactive you lock in only on your specific target, a

great habit to have is to address your ball, look up once at your target and let go and swing. More time over the ball results in more tension, having a set routine over every shot that is quick and reactive leads to much better golf swings, especially under pressure.

A good pre-shot routine should take roughly the same amount of time for every shot. Most importantly, it must be repeatable under pressure. By following the same process on the first tee, during practice, and in competition, you train your mind to associate the routine with confidence and execution.

In golf, you cannot control every outcome. But you can control your process. A disciplined pre-shot routine gives you a structure to fall back on when under pressure.

JARVIS GOES BACK TO BACK WITH SA OPEN VICTORY

The world of golf has opened up for young South African Casey Jarvis.

The 22-year-old won the 115th Investec South African Open Championship at Stellenbosch GC in the beginning of March, to not just add his name to South African golf history, but also secure exemptions into The Masters in April and The Open in July this year.

As golf dreams go, it’s one of the biggest for this young star of the game who has come through the ranks of GolfRSA, and who with this victory has now won every major national amateur and professional trophy in South African golf.

“It just feels amazing. To be standing in this position right now, I truly feel on top of the world,” said Jarvis.

“There were so many people that came to watch and it was fantastic. Hennie (Du Plessis) and Francesco (Laporta) played great golf, but I knew I had to just keep making pars and I did that pretty well,” said Jarvis.

“As South African golfers we all dream of winning our home Open and to have done it feels amazing. I just can’t wait to go to Augusta. It’s so cool. I’ve got no words to describe the feeling. Hopefully Tiger Woods is playing because he’s my role model. And to play The Open with all of its history is unreal. I can’t wait.”

Jarvis went into the final round one stroke clear of the field and kept himself in front all day, even when he made a bogey on the 10th, on his way to back-to-back victories on the DP World Tour after winning in Kenya the week before. Jarvis is the second South African after Jayden Schaper to win back-to-back on the DP World Tour this season.

It was indeed a dream Sunday for South African golf, with record crowds for the national Open.

And they came to cheer for Jarvis, who was a young amateur with the biggest dreams when he worked as a volunteer at the 2017 Investec South African Open just so he could watch Rory McIlroy play.

On Sunday at Stellenbosch Golf Club, he played his way into South African golf history.

And the entire world of golf has opened its arms to him.

TURFGRASS MANAGERS AND SUSTAINABILITY

At the recent Gauteng Turf Grass Managers Association (TGMA) meeting, the issue of the career and role of the greenkeeper / course superintendent at a golf club was discussed at length.

This is not a new issue, for example at the CMASA Conference held at Steyn City in August last year, where some 136 club managers and heads of department attended. This topic was the subject of a panel discussion.

The discussion, chaired by the CMASA chairperson, included the general manager of Clovelly Golf Club, the director of golf at Stellenbosch Golf Club, the course superintendent from Royal Johannesburg, and a representative from Matkovich Golf as the panellists, and dealt with the relationship between the golf club general manager, the director of golf, the greenkeeper and greenkeeping team.

Some of the action items that arose out of those discussions were;

• for management to consider strengthening the role and career path of the green keeper / course superintendent

• to create educational content (e.g. video on “The Life of a Divot”), to help members

better understand course maintenance needs

• to establish a clear vision, mission, and operational values that align all staff towards common goals

• to explore more education and training opportunities for greenkeeping staff

What became clear from the discussions at the TGMA meeting and CMASA Conference, is that much has been said, but little has been done at club and at industry level.

Looking at the USA approach, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), has been shifting viewing the role as “skilled labour” to “scientific management”, and has successfully branded the superintendent as a critical executive, who balances environmental science, financial management, and high-level agronomy.

Australia has moved toward a “Trade and Science” model, wherein greenkeeping is a regulated trade, meaning that a “Greenkeeper” isn’t just a job title; it is regarded as a professional designation earned through a specific legal and educational framework.

So, what needs to be done?

Some immediate action items (“the low hanging fruit”) include clubs reviewing their greenkeeping staff job descriptions, where professional certification and licencing (e.g. pest control operator – PCO - license) should be mandatory.

This professional status should be tied to a manager’s ability to document and reduce environmental impact, which will move the greenkeeper from being seen as a “grass cutter”, to becoming an “environmental guardian.”

In the medium term, the industry, through CMASA, should be building an apprenticeship / traineeship system based on best management practices.

This will help to fill an educational gap, where in South Africa, training is often

fragmented between high-end private academies and informal labour.

Furthermore, a mandatory credit system, for TGMA members, with credits earned through attending TGMA meetings thereby earning continuing education units every year, should be introduced, which will help to ensure that managers stay current with the latest technologies and developments.

The real added value, of the above-mentioned points is that it will introduce a proactive approach, help to underpin a golf clubs’ sustainability journey, and help to reinforce its three ESG pillars; environmental stewardship (“E”), social responsibility (“S”), governance excellence and financial sustainability (“G”).

KNOW YOUR RULES

WRONG GREEN

Rule 13.1f.

Interference exists when any part of the ball either touches a wrong green or “lies on or in anything” – the rule gives the example of a loose impediment or obstruction – and is “inside the edge of a wrong green”.

If a wrong green is interfering with either your intended stance or area of swing then you also have to take relief, it is not a choice.

THE PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS’ GUIDE TO EXPLORING CAPE TOWN

You would be surprised to know what professional golfers get up to off the fairways and during a week in a world-class city such as Cape Town, which hosted the CIRCA Cape Town Open on the Sunshine Tour and HotelPlanner Tour. And it’s far more normal than you think.

The chance to play a tournament in a city that is one of the world’s most sought-after tourism destinations brings with it an ideal opportunity to go from the driving range and explore a mountain range, or to trade a few fairway drives for some of the city’s most scenic drives.

So as focused as this year’s field was as they competed for glory at Royal Cape Golf Club,

they still took time out to explore Cape Town as well.

“I went to the Access Park shopping centre and there is a fish and chips shop there where you can buy a calamari and chips bun for R45. You must do that in Cape Town. It’s like a Gatbsy (an iconic Cape Town sandwich) but it’s a bun. For R45, it’s a bargain,” said Jaco Ahlers, a former winner of the CIRCA Cape Town Open.

Gerhard Pepler has two favourites he never misses whenever in Cape Town.

“The Red Bus Tour is always fun. And the Two Oceans Aquarium. It’s amazing and an absolute must-do when you’re in Cape Town,” he said.

George Golf Club — 120 Years of History, Golf and Community

Milestones in golf are often measured in birdies and trophies. But some are measured in generations.

This year, George Golf Club marks an extraordinary 120 years, a legacy that stretches back to its establishment in 1886 and its official opening in 1906. In doing so, it reaffirms its place not only as one of South Africa’s oldest golf clubs, but as one of its most enduring institutions.

PLAY

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Garden Route, the course has long been defined by more than its mountain views and lush fairways. It has been a meeting place. A proving ground. A sanctuary for those who understand that golf is as much about companionship as it is about competition.

Over the decades, its layout has tested and charmed in equal measure. From relaxed social rounds to prestigious tournaments, the fairways have witnessed triumph, heartbreak, laughter and lifelong friendships. Every era has left its imprint; every generation has added a chapter.

Through shifting times and changing fashions in the game, the spirit of the club has remained constant, rooted in tradition, sportsmanship and camaraderie. That continuity is no accident. It is the product of members, past and present, whose loyalty and passion have shaped the character of the club. Staff, sponsors and the

broader Garden Route community have all played a part in sustaining its heartbeat.

Reaching 120 years is therefore not simply a historical footnote. It is a tribute to the people who have carried the club forward, those who have teed it up at dawn, served behind the scenes, hosted events, or simply gathered after a round to relive every shot.

And at George, the experience does not end at the 18th green.

The Firebox Restaurant, situated at the halfway house, overlooks the rolling fairways and offers wood-fired pizzas and flame-grilled favourites in a setting that captures the easy rhythm of the course. It is a reminder that the game’s richest moments often happen off the scorecard, over shared meals, animated conversations and the quiet satisfaction of a day well spent.

As the club celebrates this landmark year, there is both reverence and resolve. Reverence for a storied past. Resolve to ensure the next chapter is just as meaningful.

Because George Golf Club has never been merely about holes and handicaps. It is about generations shaped by tradition. It is about a community bound by a shared love for the game. And, 120 years on, it remains a place where every round tells a story and the story is far from finished.

A CONVERSATION WITH KRIBEN GOUNDER

Golf course superintendent. Victoria Country Club.

SAGT: When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further?

Kriben: Before I started with turf management I actually managed engines. I am a qualified mechanic by trade, and my first role in golf was not chasing perfect mowing lines but running the workshop at Zimbali. Steel, oil and torque was my world.

It was only after moving to Leopard Creek and spending more time out on the course that something shifted. Watching how surfaces responded to heat, rain, traffic and timing sparked a different kind of curiosity. I realised that grass was far more complex than it looked. It wasn’t just green. It was alive. And slowly, what started as exposure became intention.

SAGT: What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent?

Kriben: The best part of the job is easy, the outdoor office. There’s something deeply satisfying about implementing a plan and only seeing the reward months later. Turf management is a long game. You don’t always get applause for today’s decision, but six months down the line, when surfaces hold firm and greens roll true, that’s the quiet victory.

The hardest part? When nature has other ideas.

SAGT: You are at Victoria CC which is in Pietermaritzburg, what are your biggest challenges maintaining a course with such big climate changes during the year?

Kriben: Victoria CC experiences pronounced seasonal swings. The greens are Bent grass, cool season specialists that don’t particularly enjoy peak summer heat. Add high rainfall into the mix and bunkers become a full-time relationship. Washouts, drainage challenges, and sand consistency all demand frequent attention. Winter shifts the tempo. Growth slows, daily mowing reduces and the focus turns to projects, the behind-the-scenes improvements golfers rarely see but always benefit from.

What makes Victoria CC especially interesting from a turf perspective is its “split” personality.

SAGT: What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at Victoria CC to other parts of the country?

Kriben: A. The greens are cool season Bent grass, while the fairways and rough are warm season varieties.

SAGT: Does one need different machinery on course for different types of grasses around the country?

Kriben: Managing two different turf types on one property is not a copy-and-paste operation. Each surface demands specific cultural practices, tailored nutrition and carefully selected machinery. Precision matters.

And yes, machinery still plays a role in my story. Understanding grass types dictates everything from cutting height to aeration strategy and equipment choice. The mechanic never fully leaves the superintendent.

SAGT: To what extent does course setup affect slow play, and how do you deal with it?

Kriben: Course setup is another subtle art. At Victoria CC, three short holes appear in succession, a design feature that can influence pace of play.

Too easy and rounds slow down. Too difficult…and rounds slow down for a different reason. The solution? Balance. Six easier holes, six moderate, six challenging. A rhythm to the round. A conversation between difficulty and enjoyment.

SAGT: Do you think it should be mandatory for golf courses to close one day per week for maintenance?

Kriben: I think one should be practical. While closures can assist with large-scale projects, turf doesn’t pause neatly once a week. Maintenance is ongoing. Golf facilities are businesses, and at Victoria CC the approach is to work around play, because the reason the course exists is, ultimately, for golfers to play it.

SAGT: How important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately vs only a couple of days or week later?

Kriben: To me this is golfer responsibility. Divots and pitch marks are not minor inconveniences. They are living tissue damage. Immediate repair significantly improves recovery rates. Delay it, and what could have healed becomes replacement work. More labour. More cost. More intervention. And then there’s etiquette. No golfer wants to

watch a birdie putt wobble off line because of an unrepaired pitch mark. That’s not character building. That’s heartbreak.

SAGT: People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how?

Kirben: Bunkers are often misunderstood. Second only to greens in maintenance demand, they are highly sensitive to weather. Too wet and they firm up. Too dry and they become fluffy and inconsistent. Weekly edging, daily raking, sand redistribution and maintaining roughly 80mm depth are part of the routine. As seasons change, bunker strategy evolves with them.

SAGT:Do you get time to play yourself and how important is it to play your own course?

Kirben: Despite the demands, I try to make time to play. Experiencing the course from a player’s perspective offers insight that maintenance observation cannot. Playing alongside members opens a direct feedback channel, sometimes praise, sometimes suggestions, but always valuable. For me turf management is not about keeping grass green. It is about managing a living environment under constant variables. It is part science, part strategy, part patience.

After 25 years at Kloof Country Club, Robert Msizi Nene has become a familiar and trusted face to members and staff alike. Known for his warm personality and tireless work ethic, Nene’s journey at the club is a story of loyalty, growth, and a genuine love for people.

Nene joined the club in 1999 shortly after finishing school, and it has been his professional home ever since. He began his career as a handyman for a few months before being promoted to locker room keeper. Over the years, he built a wealth of experience across various roles, including waiter, halfway house cashier, and barman. In 2004, he moved into Golf Operations, the position he still holds today.

His day starts early, with the alarm going off well before sunrise. By 6:00 AM, Nene is already at the club preparing for the day ahead. The KZN Coastline – Prince’s Grant to Wild Coast Sun

From the laid-back shores of Zinkwazi Beach in the north to the winding banks of the Umtamvuna River in the south, KwaZulu-Natal’s coastline unfolds as one of South Africa’s most rewarding golfing corridors. Within this stretch lies an extraordinary collection of some 21 golf courses, each distinct in character, yet united by scenery, accessibility, and undeniable value.

Few regions can claim such variety within a single coastal drive. Here, world-class golf estates sit comfortably alongside traditional country clubs steeped in local heritage.

What makes the KZN South Coast and North Coast so compelling, however, is not just the quality of the golf. It is the value. These courses consistently deliver exceptional experiences without the prohibitive price tags often associated with premier destinations. Visitors

enjoy top-tier conditioning, warm hospitality, and facilities that rival those of far more expensive international markets.

And of course, this is KwaZulu-Natal, one of South Africa’s most beloved tourist destinations. Beyond the 18th green lies an abundance of choice: luxury beachfront accommodation, boutique guesthouses, fine dining, vibrant cafés, nature reserves, fishing, surfing, and family-friendly attractions. It is a region where a golf trip easily becomes something more, a full coastal escape.

For the travelling golfer, the message is simple: this stretch of coastline is not just a collection of courses, but a ready-made golfing holiday. Whether you are planning a competitive tour with friends, a relaxed couples’ getaway, or a multi-round adventure across different layouts, the options are both plentiful and practical.

Built on steep rolling terrain, through valleys and over hills, Prince’s Grant is a visual feast and an entertainingly varied challenge. Lots of unique looking holes, some in tropical surroundings among the coastal bush, others on higher ground being links-like in appearance.

The clubhouse and lodge is a magnificent double-storey building occupying a prime position with sea views, and bears a striking resemblance to that at Shinnecock Hills in the United States.

A wonderful year-round destination, golfers are lured here in winter by clear, windless days and warm temperatures.

Zimbali Lakes Resort

On South Africa’s rapidly evolving KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, few developments capture the imagination quite like Zimbali Lakes Resort. Anchored by an Ernie Els signature design golf course, which has quickly positioned itself as more than just another championship layout, it is emerging as the centrepiece of a broader luxury lifestyle precinct.

A Different Kind of Els Course

Those familiar with Ernie Els designed courses will recognise the hallmarks: bold shaping, dramatic visuals, and layouts that test even accomplished players from the back tees. Yet Zimbali Lakes distinguishes itself through balance. It is unquestionably a championship course, but one that rewards strategy more than just length.

premium, setting a high benchmark from the outset. The closing stretch in particular delivers both theatre and challenge, a spectator-friendly run of holes that lingers in the memory. Complementing the on-course experience is a modern clubhouse, set to open in April 2026, designed to transform a round of golf into a full-day lifestyle occasion.

Strategic, Striking, and Surprisingly Welcoming

Here, precision trumps power. The routing flows naturally through the estate, weaving between water features and subtle elevation shifts. Generous corridors offer visual width but demand thoughtful placement. It is golf that asks questions rather than simply penalising.

Several elements elevate the experience further. Conditioning standards have been consistently

The most consistent feedback from golfers has centred on four themes: strategic design, visual appeal, immaculate conditioning, and accessibility across handicap levels.

Players frequently remark on the quality of the greens and fairways, as well as the variety in hole design. At Zimbali Lakes, no two holes feel alike; each presents its own narrative and demands a considered approach. The finishing holes, in particular, have drawn praise for their drama and sense of occasion.

Perhaps most telling is the sentiment that the course has already exceeded expectations in its first full season. There is a widespread belief that, as the landscape matures and the estate evolves, the golf experience will only strengthen.

round on the Dolphin Coast Play where legends meet the fairway.

At The Capital Zimbali Resort, every round is framed by sweeping coastal forest and endless Indian Ocean views. Tee off on the private championship Zimbali Country Club, then retreat to luxury at one of South Africa’s most iconic coastal destinations

Our Stay & Play package is designed for golfers who want the perfect balance of championship golf and effortless relaxation. Tee Off. Stay in Style. Repeat.

The North Coast’s Momentum

Zimbali Lakes does not exist in isolation. It is part of a broader surge along KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast, driven by accessibility and lifestyle appeal. Proximity to King Shaka International Airport, just 15 minutes away, has been a decisive factor.

Add to that a subtropical climate with mild winters and warm summers, blue-flag swimming beaches, and a diverse range of outdoor pursuits from surfing to game fishing, and the appeal becomes clear. Quality private schooling and medical facilities have further strengthened the semigration trend, with significant numbers of families relocating to the region each month.

More Than a Golf Estate

What ultimately defines Zimbali Lakes Resort is integration. Golf sits at its heart, but it is only one component of a multi-layered lifestyle offering.

Residents enjoy beach access, dining at the Zimbali Lakes Clubhouse, home to the Big Easy Winebar & Grill, as well as the security and estate management expected of a premium development. Walking trails, water features, leisure facilities and contemporary architectural design

combine to create a multi-generational environment suited to families, retirees and investors alike.

There is also a palpable sense of forward momentum. As new amenities roll out in the coming years, the precinct feels not static but ascending, growing in both stature and value.

A Compelling Investment Case

From an investment perspective, the fundamentals are strong. The estate benefits from its prime North Coast location, rising demand for secure lifestyle living, and notable rental and holiday letting potential. Long-term capital appreciation in the region further enhances its appeal.

Residential options are diverse: freehold stands, luxury villas, apartments, townhouses, golf-side homes, ocean-facing properties and sectional title units. Buyers can opt to build bespoke architectural homes or select turnkey offerings within the estate.

In essence, Zimbali Lakes offers more than bricks and mortar. It presents a lifestyle proposition, secure, aspirational, with access to a world-class golf environment bearing the unmistakable signature of Ernie Els.

Inside the Changing Expectations of Modern Wedding Venues

Venues that allow guests to arrive early, stay longer and move easily between spaces are increasingly favoured, particularly in coastal regions like KZN where celebrations often extend across a weekend. Estates that combine natural surroundings with established hospitality infrastructure are well positioned to meet this shift, offering couples a balance of atmosphere and operational ease.

At Simbithi Country Club, weddings are supported by an integrated environment that extends beyond a single event space. A panoramic view of an award-winning golf course with indigenous green corridors and leisure facilities encourages guests to explore and connect, while the Club’s layout allows celebrations to unfold across multiple settings without feeling fragmented. Dining also plays a central role, with food offerings available from the Fig Tree Restaurant alongside tailored catering solutions, including access to private chef services for bespoke menus, a growing priority for couples seeking personalised, experience-driven celebrations.

As the wedding industry continues to evolve, venues that respond to these changing expectations, blending setting, infrastructure and experience, are redefining what makes a great wedding venue. Within KwaZulu-Natal’s expanding wedding landscape, venues like Simbithi Country Club offer insight into why destination-style venues are increasingly shaping how, and where, couples choose to celebrate.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments.

Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too.

Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme

Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome.

We look forward to welcoming you soon!

In the wake of World War I, as the world sought to rebuild and rediscover leisure, Durban found itself at a crossroads. Already a premier seaside destination, the city lacked a certain social and sporting anchor, a gap that was eventually filled by the birth of the Durban Country Club. What began as a practical necessity has evolved over the last century into a legendary institution that captures the spirit of the Indian Ocean coastline.

The club’s origin story is one of resilience. While the Durban Golf Club (now Royal Durban) held its own unique charm, famously nestled within the curves of a horse racing track, it was perpetually at the mercy of the elements. Frequent flooding created a demand for a second, more reliable course.

If walls could talk, the clubhouse at Durban Country Club would speak in the hushed tones of golfing royalty. The course has served

as the ultimate proving ground, hosting a record-breaking 18 South African Opens.

The fairways have been the backdrop for some of the sport’s most iconic “firsts” and “favourites”:

• 1956: A young Gary Player secured his first-ever South African Open victory here.

• 1998: Ernie Els solidified his legendary status with his third SA Open win on these grounds.

• 2010: The club was the natural choice to host the prestigious Centenary SA Open.

The history isn’t just limited to the Durban Country Club fairways, either. Royal Durban, famously hosted an eighteen-year-old Nick Faldo during the 1975 Commonwealth Tournament, proving that this small pocket of South Africa has always been a magnet for global talent.

Join us at the Best Golf Course on the South Coast, where our meticulously maintained fairways and lush greens are designed to test golfers of all skill levels. Soak in the stunning coastal views of the Umzimkhulu River and the Indian Ocean whilst also experiencing exceptional customer service and a friendly atmosphere.

Port Shepstone Country Club is celebrating a decade of the prestigious title of Readers’ Choice Best Golf Course on the South Coast and we are so grateful to the public and the local community for their loyalty and consistent support over the years.

Whilst our golf course is our main feature at the club, our offering also includes Padel, Pickleball, Bowls, Cricket, Squash, Events Hall for functions, Clubhouse Bar & Restaurant, Conference Room, Kiddies Play Area, KZN Slots and so much more!

We also offer Coastal Golf Membership to golfers around the country that reside 14km or more, away from the club. The 2026 fees are R1150 for males & R1240 for females and this membership is valid for 12 months and provides you with an official SAGA HNA Handicap affiliated to Port Shepstone Country Club.

A Coastal Golf Journey Along KwaZulu-Natal’s ‘Golf Coast’

For golfers with a week to spare, few road trips rival the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. This stretch of shoreline south of Durban boasts an impressive collection of courses set among rolling hills, coastal forests and sweeping ocean views.

Less than an hour from King Shaka International Airport lies Amanzimtoti, home to Amanzimtoti Country Club. Situated within a conservancy, the course shares its fairways with abundant birdlife, including pelicans and cormorants, as well as vervet monkeys and small antelope, a reminder that golf on the South Coast is as much about nature as it is about the game.

Further south in Umkomaas, the historic

Umkomaas Golf Club offers a classic coastal layout and is the home club of South African professional Tim Clark. Nearby, Scottburgh Golf Club presents a sterner test when the notorious “beasterly easterly” wind sweeps in from the Indian Ocean.

Among the region’s standout destinations is Selborne Golf Estate, Hotel & Spa. Developed in 1979 after owner Denis Barker drew inspiration from American residential golf estates, Selborne has grown into one of South Africa’s premier golf properties, known for its beautifully framed holes and distinctive par-3s.

Near Port Shepstone, the scenic Port Shepstone Country Club sits alongside the Mzimkhulu River. The course is relatively flat but memorable for its dramatic fifth hole, played from a hillside down to a small green far below.

Palm trees and indigenous bush frame the fairways at Margate Country Club, a course designed to appeal to golfers of all abilities. Further along the coast, Southbroom Golf Club, opened in 1938, remains one of South Africa’s most beloved holiday resort courses, with spectacular ocean views and a relaxed seaside atmosphere.

Luxury and nature meet at San Lameer Estate, where an 18-hole course winds through a 169-hectare subtropical conservancy. With sea breezes drifting in from nearby Blue Flag beaches, it is one of the South Coast’s most enjoyable rounds.

At the southern edge of the province lies Port Edward Country Club, where cleverly designed alternate tees allow golfers to play a full 18-hole experience on a nine-hole layout.

The journey culminates just across the Mtamvuna River at the iconic Wild Coast Country Club. Originally in the former homeland of Transkei, the resort now sits within the Eastern Cape and combines championship golf with a lively entertainment and holiday complex.

Of course, there’s no single way to tackle the South Coast’s golfing riches. Many visitors begin at the Wild Coast Sun and work their way north, playing a course or two a day before returning to Durban. And for those still eager for more, the city itself, along with the rolling fairways of the northern Dolphin Coast, promises another chapter in one of South Africa’s most rewarding golf journeys.

Wild Coast Country Club

Set along the rugged coastline on the border of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, Wild Coast Country Club has long been known as one of South Africa’s most visually striking resort golf courses. Today, the course is experiencing renewed momentum as improved course conditions, stronger operations and a growing tournament calendar bring fresh energy back to the destination.

Unlike many courses that rely on a single signature hole, Wild Coast Sun offers multiple standout moments throughout the round. The par-70 layout winds through natural coastal valleys and rolling terrain, with several holes framed by dramatic scenery and sweeping ocean views. Among the most iconic is the famous 13th hole played over a waterfall, a hole that has become one of the most recognisable and photographed in South African golf.

In recent years, a renewed focus on course conditioning and operational standards has played a key role in elevating the overall golfing experience. The appointment of JC Coetzer as Golf Operations Manager, bringing experience from Sun City, introduced a stronger operational structure across both the golf course and club operations. The objective was simple: restore playing quality, strengthen service standards and ensure the facility operates at the level expected from a premier resort destination.

Since then, noticeable improvements have been

made in course presentation and playability. The greens have been restored to a high standard, with the course’s Paspalum and Cynodon turf performing well in the coastal climate and providing consistent playing surfaces throughout the year.

This renewed focus has also helped rebuild the club’s tournament calendar, bringing competitive golf back to Wild Coast Sun. Events such as the Nedbank Amateur tournament have returned to the schedule, while the course has once again welcomed Sunshine Tour events, reaffirming its ability to host high-level competition.

Alongside these prestigious tournaments, the club continues to grow a vibrant calendar of club events and open

competitions that attract golfers from across the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Popular events such as the Ocean Breeze Open and the Wild Coast Monthly Meat Day combine competitive golf with a relaxed social atmosphere that reflects the spirit of the resort.

Beyond the golf itself, Wild Coast Sun remains a true resort experience, where players can combine a memorable round with accommodation, restaurants, entertainment and coastal scenery. This combination of golf and resort lifestyle continues to make the course a popular stop for golfers travelling along the South Coast.

With improved playing conditions, a strengthened operations team and the return of major tournaments, Wild Coast Country Club is once again establishing itself as a vibrant and exciting golf destination on South Africa’s coastline.

GOLFRSA LAUNCHES ON GOLF ADVENTURE –JUST

SWING! ONE NEW HOLE. ONE BIG FIRST STEP.

GolfRSA has taken its first swing into the metaverse, launching a dedicated GolfRSA hole in the on-line game “Golf Adventure –Just Swing! By The R&A”, extending its drive to grow golf on one of the world’s largest gaming platforms.

The initiative forms part of The R&A’s Just Swing campaign to broaden golf’s appeal and make the first step into the game feel fun, simple, welcoming and accessible.

“By creating a GolfRSA-branded hole inside the Golf Adventure – Just Swing! game, we are quite literally meeting young audiences where they already are and making that first step

feel easy,” said GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn.

“If their world includes gaming, then that’s where we need to show up. Just Swing! is about removing barriers and showing that golf doesn’t have to feel intimidating. It can start with something as simple as picking up a club, or in this case, taking a virtual swing.”

The launch aligns with GolfRSA’s broader participation and development strategy, which focuses on growing the game among juniors and women.

KNOW YOUR GOLF CLUB’S GENERAL MANAGER

Interview with Tyler Chislett, Plettenberg Bay Country Club

SAGT - How long have you been in the golf industry? What made you choose this career?

Tyler: I took up the game quite late but the bug bit quickly. I’ve officially been in the golf industry since 2018, when I started my journey at Zimbali CC. Golf has always appealed to me because it combines so many elements that I enjoy — people, hospitality, sport, and the outdoors. It’s a unique industry where you’re not just managing a facility but creating an experience for members and visitors. The opportunity to be part of a community and contribute to something people are passionate about is what really drew me in.

SAGT - Has it always been golf for you, or what did you do prior to getting into the golf industry?

Tyler: Before entering the golf industry, I spent time gaining experience in hospitality and business management. Those early roles helped me understand the importance of customer service, attention to detail, and building strong teams — all of which translate perfectly into managing a golf club. The golf

industry allowed me to combine those skills with my passion for sport and outdoor environments.

SAGT - In your opinion, what is the most important thing to run a successful golf or country club?

Tyler: Without a doubt, the team around you. A successful club is built on the strength of its people. Having a motivated, passionate, and well-supported team makes all the difference. Leadership is about empowering your staff, ensuring they feel valued, and giving them the tools to succeed. When the team is aligned and working toward the same vision, members feel that positive energy throughout the club.

SAGT - Describe a typical workday for you at Plettenberg Bay CC.

Tyler: I generally start around 6am by welcoming the team and doing a drive around the course to check everything is in order for the day ahead. We always have a number of projects on the go at Plett CC so I try to complete most of my administrative work by about 9am. After that, the day usually consists of meetings, operational planning, and

engaging with the different departments around the club.

SAGT - With consumers being careful about how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to the club?

Tyler: We are all competing for people’s valuable time and their disposable income. Now more than ever, it’s crucial to ensure that we offer exceptional value and a memorable experience. That means maintaining a great-quality golf course, excellent service, and creating an atmosphere where people genuinely enjoy spending their time. Events, social engagement, and welcoming hospitality all play a role in making the club a destination people want to return to.

SAGT - Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today. How do you manage slow play at Plettenberg Bay CC?

Tyler: Fortunately, we generally enjoy a very good pace of play at Plett CC

Our Starters and Marshals are trained to perform both roles, allowing them to manage the field from the moment players arrive at the first tee and to monitor pace throughout the round. This ensures that expectations are set early and that any potential delays are addressed before they impact the entire field.

Equally important is positive reinforcement. We make a point of acknowledging and thanking groups who maintain a good pace of play, which helps build a culture where players take pride in keeping the game moving. Tee times are also carefully structured to ensure a natural flow on the course without unnecessary pressure on players.

SAGT - Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays? Does this place demands on your personal life?

Tyler: The golf industry is more of a lifestyle, so, yes, it often means being available during weekends, holidays, and major events, as those

are typically the busiest times at the club. It does require balance, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Fortunately, the environment is very family-oriented, and being able to occasionally include my family in club life helps make that balance possible.

SAGT - What are your short- and long-term goals?

Tyler: In the short term, my focus is on continuing to strengthen the overall experience at Plett CC for both members and visitors. This includes maintaining the high standard of the golf course, enhancing our facilities, and ensuring that service across all departments consistently reflects the quality and hospitality the club is known for.

From a longer-term perspective, I believe it is important to continually set goals that support both personal growth and the ongoing success of the club. I have a number of exciting ideas and ambitions for the future, and I look forward to building on the strong foundation we have at Plett CC as those plans develop.

SAGT - What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Tyler: Spending time with my family is always at the top of the list. Having a young son means there’s always something new and exciting happening at home, which I really enjoy.

I’m also happiest when I’m outdoors. Whether it’s surfing, playing padel or golf, or going for a hike.

SAGT - Do you get time to play a round or two?

Tyler: I try to whenever I can! Like many people working in golf, finding time to actually play can sometimes be a challenge, but it’s always great to get out on the course when the opportunity arises. It’s also a great way to stay connected with the member experience and see the course from a golfer’s perspective.

every day, with significant growth among teenagers and young adults. By positioning golf within an interactive, playful environment, GolfRSA is tapping into a digital ecosystem where discovery happens naturally and curiosity turns into participation.

The GolfRSA hole forms part of the wider Golf Adventure – Just Swing! experience blending traditional golf elements with creative challenges and engaging gameplay. Players can test their skills, climb leaderboards and unlock in-game rewards, while being introduced to the fundamentals of the sport in a fun and unintimidating way.

From screen time to swing time, GolfRSA’s message is clear - golf is for anyone, and it can start anywhere.

“Our goal is simple,” Hepburn added. “Make

Ensuring a safe and responsible digital environment was a key consideration in GolfRSA’s decision to engage on the popular gaming platform. “Safeguarding is non-negotiable for GolfRSA,” Hepburn said.

“With parental controls, age-appropriate settings and clear community standards, Golf Adventure – Just Swing! By The R&A operates within a structured and moderated digital environment. We would only engage in a with an on-line game where the wellbeing of young people is prioritised, and where participation can take place in a safe, responsible and inclusive space.”

Let’s be prepared for the season ahead

As we move into a change of season, it is good to be prepared of what we are facing in the season ahead.

At this time, we move towards Poa Annua germination in April, if this is a concern for your kikuyu of Bermuda areas. It is the perfect time to get your Pennant Magnum down at 1L/ha and best to follow up this application, in this case I would say 3 weeks later.

Remember to apply Pennant magnum onto moist soil and water in 24 hours later,

A great tank mix option with Pennant Magnum is:

• 1L/ha Pennant Magnum

• 1kg/ha Casper

• 100ml/ha Complement Super

Turf Tips fortheseasonahead

March is the time to get your Large Patch preventative down with:

1.4L Banner Maxx & 250g/ha Heritage.

When treating Large Patch, you would typically treat your trees and areas which are typically problematic and around the area as this disease will spread each year if left untreated.

If you are based in the Western Cape, we need to be on the lookout for Microdochium Patch.

It is best to get your preventative applications down for this disease.

Instrata would be your go to guy as your April preventative. This disease will be an issue from April – August and if you don’t get your preventative down, this can be a tricky disease.

You may be seeing Rhizoctonia Circinata.

Your Watea Patch activity on your kikuyu areas as this is the most important time to treat Large Patch.
