To the Editor My journey with golf started at the age of seven, and it didn’t take long for me to realise that this was a sport I would love for the rest of my life. There’s just something special about the feeling of hitting a perfect shot, enjoying a laugh with friends on the course, and always chasing that little bit of improvement. For me, golf quickly became much more than just a game, it became a lifelong passion. Golf is a fantastic way to meet people and build friendships. There’s a unique social side to the game, and many friendships that start on the first tee end up lasting a lifetime. Of course, plenty of business conversations and deals have also taken place over a round of golf. Somehow, a chat on the fairway just feels a little more relaxed! Then there are the mental and physical benefits. Golf teaches you to concentrate, think strategically, be patient and, perhaps most importantly, learn how to deal with the occasional bad shot without losing your cool! These are skills that can easily carry over into everyday life.

ALEXANDER GOES WIRE TO WIRE FOR SECOND LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR TITLE Casandra Alexander captured her second Ladies European Tour title at the 2026 KPMG Women’s Irish Open producing a complete wire-to-wire performance at The K Club to add her name to the famous trophy. After a nervy start on Sunday in Ireland, the South African fired a final round 70 (-2) on the Palmer South Course to keep the chasing pack at bay and secure a three-shot victory on 20-under par. The win is Alexander’s first in 2026 on the LET following five runner-up finishes this season. She also further extends her lead
in the Order of Merit moving to 2,399.98 points. “I’m really, really pumped,” the 27-year-old said, who follows up last year’s win at the Tipsport Czech Ladies Open. “This one’s really special. One, it’s a special event. Two, I almost feel as if the second win is just as important as the first one and it proves it’s not a fluke. I’m glad I could get that done. A CONVERSATION WITH NEIL ERASMUS Golf course superintendent. Centurion Country Club.
SAGT: When did you realise turf management was the career you wanted to pursue? Neil: Having played golf from a young age, I’ve always had an interest in turf maintenance, but I really realized in school that this is what I’ve always wanted to do. SAGT: Who have been the biggest mentors in your career? Neil: I’ve been fortunate to have two outstanding mentors. The first is Igor Duvel, currently the Superintendent at Blair Athol. I met Igor while I was the Estate Landscape Maintenance Manager at Prince’s Grant. He was the superintendent at the time, and I spent countless hours learning from him on the course. He taught me many of the finer details involved in golf course maintenance and helped shape my understanding of the profession. My second mentor is Carel van der Nest, owner of Ingadi Management. Carel has played a significant role in developing my knowledge of agronomy, turf nutrition, and fertility management. The lessons I’ve learned from both mentors have been invaluable throughout my career. SAGT: Centurion Country Club is renowned for the Hennops River running through the course. What challenges do you face when the river floods? Neil: Flooding is undoubtedly one of our biggest challenges. During periods of heavy rainfall, the river occasionally overflows its banks. The biggest
issue is not necessarily the flood itself but the cleanup afterwards. Large amounts of litter, debris, silt and sediment are deposited across the golf course once the water recedes. The cleanup operation is extensive and must be completed within a short timeframe to get the course playable and reopened to members. Removing debris while ensuring that playing surfaces remain in good condition requires significant planning, manpower and resources. SAGT: What preventative measures have been implemented to reduce flood damage? Neil: Over the past few years, several initiatives have been introduced to minimise flood damage. Berms have been constructed along sections of the riverbank, particularly around the 6th, 7th and 16th holes. A designated floodplain has also been created near the 16th hole, allowing water to be contained for longer before reaching the course. Additionally, gate valves have been installed within some of the berm structures. These allow excess water to be redirected back into the river once flood levels subside, preventing stagnant water from remaining on fairways. We also have a dedicated hydrology committee that regularly assesses the river system and identifies further opportunities to improve flood mitigation efforts. SAGT: How do the grasses used at Centurion compare with those used elsewhere in South Africa? Neil: Like many inland golf clubs, we predominantly use kikuyu on our fairways, tees, roughs and green surrounds. Our greens consist of a blend of bent grass cultivars, including 007, 777 and Dominator bent. Coastal courses often use different grass species due to their environmental conditions. Various Cynodon varieties are common, along with shade-tolerant grasses in low-light areas. Coastal greens may also feature

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - A L L A B O U T G R E E N K E E P I N G different paspalum varieties and, increasingly, some clubs are introducing bent grass through interseeding programmes. These differences reflect the unique climates and maintenance requirements across the country.
At Centurion, our walk-behind mowers use transport wheels to ensure the cutting drums never touch the ground when moving between greens. We also implement seasonal preventative programmes to limit POA establishment and maintain desired turf purity. SAGT: Should golf courses close regularly for
SAGT: How does tournament preparation differ from daily maintenance? Neil: Tournament preparation is significantly more demanding. Crews start much earlier in the mornings and often finish much later in the afternoons. The objective is to maintain consistent playing conditions throughout the tournament week, which requires increased mowing frequencies and additional course setup work. Tournament officials are also closely involved in decisions regarding course presentation, including green speeds and mowing heights. During normal operations, maintenance teams have greater flexibility and a longer working window. Tournament weeks, however, leave little room for error and demand exceptional attention to detail. SAGT: Do golfers or maintenance machinery contribute more to spreading POA seed and
maintenance? Neil: I don’t believe it should be mandatory, but having dedicated maintenance days twice a month would certainly be beneficial. It would allow maintenance teams to complete important cultural practices and projects that are sometimes difficult to fit into normal operational schedules. SAGT: Do maintenance staff ever come into conflict with golfers? Neil: Occasionally, disagreements arise, as they do in any service environment. Our team always tries to remain out of golfers’ way and minimise disruptions to play. If incidents occur, staff report them to management, who address the matter appropriately. Where mistakes are made on our side, we deal with them internally and use them as learning opportunities. SAGT: Why is bunker consistency so difficult to maintain? Neil: Bunkers are among the most labour-intensive features on any golf course. Weather conditions continuously affect sand quality. During winter the sand is often dry and soft, while summer rains can leave bunkers firm and compacted.

To maintain consistency, we regularly turn the sand to relieve compaction, remove stones and debris, and monitor sand depths using measuring tools. Consistent bunker conditions require ongoing attention, which is why they remain one of the most challenging maintenance areas on the course.

For Lizette Etzebeth, working at Parys Golf and Country Estate is about much more than simply opening the Pro Shop each morning. It is about welcoming golfers, building relationships, sharing a laugh or two and making sure every visitor leaves with a smile and, hopefully, something from the shop as well! A typical day starts with opening the Pro Shop and making sure everything is in order. Lizette checks the bookings that have come in and prepares for the golfers arriving for their rounds. She assists with payments and, for first-time visitors, is always happy to share a little local knowledge about the course, including its layout and some of the trickier holes. She also makes sure the caddies have registered for the day and are ready for their clients. Being part of a golf estate means Lizette sees many of the same members week after week, and those relationships have become an important part of her working life. “Most of them feel like family,” she says. Parys also attracts plenty of visitors, and Lizette has a simple philosophy when it comes to welcoming them. “My first intention is always to put a smile on their dial. My second intention is to sell them something!” Her friendly and approachable nature means golfers are often quick to share their stories and experiences with her. Whether it is a good score, a disastrous hole or simply a funny moment from the round, Lizette enjoys hearing what happens out on the course. “I get quite a lot of feedback on the golf course. The golfers regard me as approachable and most of them are quick to share their stories of the game. I am always open to a quick joke with you.”

SAGT: Please tell us a little about yourself prior to your appointment at Milnerton Golf Club? Abrie: I’ve spent the past 15 years in the golf industry and became a member of the PGA of South Africa in 2012, which helped shape the career path I’ve followed ever since. Most of my experience has been in the Western Cape, where I’ve been fortunate to work across several areas of the industry, including coaching, golf academies, course operations, golf unions and marketing. Looking back, that variety has given me a broad understanding of how the different parts of the golf business fit together and contribute to the overall success of a club. SAGT: What led you to pursue a management career in the golfing industry? Abrie: Over time, I became increasingly interested in the business side of golf and how the various departments work together. That curiosity encouraged me to focus more intentionally on management and further my studies in that direction. What I enjoy most is bringing people and departments together to create an environment where talented individuals have the support they need to succeed. Seeing a team work toward common goals and deliver great experiences is incredibly rewarding.

SAGT: In your opinion, what is the most important ingredient for a successful golf club? Abrie: For me, it starts with understanding both your members and your team. There are many operational tasks that need attention every day, but simply ticking boxes does not create a thriving club. A successful golf club understands what its members value while ensuring its staff have the tools, support and motivation needed to deliver those expectations. When the needs of members and staff are aligned, everything else tends to fall into place. SAGT: Being situated on the coast, what are the biggest weather-related challenges you face? Abrie: Milnerton is in a unique position, bordered by both the Atlantic Ocean and the lagoon, so weather conditions play a significant role in daily operations. While we cannot control the wind or changing weather patterns, we can control how prepared we are. That means investing in the right equipment, ensuring our team has the necessary expertise and providing access to the best support available.

Ultimately, effective management comes down to controlling what you can and responding proactively to what you cannot. SAGT: With consumers being more cautious about spending, how do you plan to attract more visitors to the club? Abrie: Fortunately, Milnerton already offers something truly special. The combination of ocean views, Table Mountain as a backdrop and a genuine links-style golf experience creates a setting that is difficult to replicate. Our focus is on ensuring that every other aspect of the experience matches the quality of those surroundings. Whether it is customer service, course conditioning or the overall atmosphere, we want guests to leave feeling welcomed, valued and confident that they received excellent value for their money. SAGT: Slow play remains a major issue in golf. How do you manage it at Milnerton? Abrie: Our course layout provides some advantages when managing pace of play. The traditional nine-holes-out and nine-holes-in design allows us to schedule visitor play with ten-minute tee intervals, creating more space between groups and reducing pressure on players. Course setup also plays an important role. Many visitors are unfamiliar with links-style golf, especially in windy conditions, so fair course preparation is essential. Combined with the efforts of our starters and marshals, these measures help maintain a good pace of play from the very first tee. SAGT: Does the role demand availability outside normal working hours? Abrie: Golf club management often requires you to be available when needed, but I’ve learned that being permanently available is not always the same as being effective.

Work-life balance has become increasingly important to me. The role can be demanding, so having a capable team, good systems and healthy boundaries is essential. I’m married with an eight-year-old son, and family time is how I recharge and maintain perspective. I’m grateful that Milnerton has welcomed my family so warmly, which has made the transition even more enjoyable. SAGT: What are your short and long-term goals for the club? Abrie: In the short term, my focus is on understanding Milnerton fully. The club has a rich history spanning more than a century, a strong identity and many things that already work exceptionally well. Long term, I want to build on those strengths in a sustainable way. That includes protecting the golf course, improving long-term water security, enhancing member and visitor experiences and making decisions that will benefit the club well into the future. SAGT: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Abrie: Most of my free time is spent with family and friends. Away from the golf course, I enjoy both pickleball and surfing. Having waves only a short distance from my office is certainly one of the unique perks of working at Milnerton. SAGT: Do you still find time to play golf? Abrie: Yes, and it remains an important part of the job. While playing, I’m still observing the course, engaging with members and noticing things that might be missed from behind a desk. Golf provides a valuable opportunity to experience the course from a member’s perspective while still remaining connected to the operational side of the business. And, of course, it’s always enjoyable to spend a few hours simply playing the game.

FICHARDT WINS STAYSURE PGA SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP Darren Fichardt put last year’s play-off disappointment behind him to win the 2026 Staysure PGA Seniors Championship by five shots at Trump International Golf Links, Aberdeen. Twelve months after losing to Bo Van Pelt on the first extra hole, the South African returned with what he described earlier in the week as “unfinished business” and closed with a four-under-par 68 to finish on 12-under-par and secure the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship title. “I was thinking about it last night. It just slipped out of my hands last year,” said the five-time DP World Tour winner.

Fichardt began the final round with a four-shot advantage and initially looked set to pull away, opening with consecutive birdies to move to ten-under. Successive bogeys at the sixth and seventh brought him back to the field, however, as Mikael Lundberg and Jamie Donaldson began to apply pressure. Playing two groups ahead, Sweden’s Lundberg birdied the fourth and sixth before adding further gains at the 12th

The Welshman’s challenge suffered a costly setback with a disastrous triple-bogey at the 13th, while Lundberg continued his charge and eventually birdied the last to complete a five-under-par 67 and set the clubhouse target at seven-under. For Fichardt, a testing par save at the 14th proved an important moment.

“The putt on 14 for par was crucial for me,” he said. “I felt like I was all over the place when things weren’t going my way. When I made that, I said to my wife, ‘Okay, I think we’ve got it.’” A birdie at the par-five 15th strengthened his position before Fichardt finished the championship in style. A majestic 4-iron into the par-five 18th finished just a couple of feet from the hole, leaving a tap-in eagle to complete a 68 and a 12-under-par total of 276. “I started stumbling a bit midway through the round, but then I reset and pulled myself together, which was good, and had a nice finish there on 18,” he added.

The victory capped a week which provided a complete test of links golf, from the wind and rain which made Saturday particularly demanding to the calmer conditions which brought significantly lower scoring on Sunday. “It definitely tests your character, that’s for sure,” said Fichardt. “I hit every single shot this week – low, high, left to right, right to left, punches, everything. Links golf certainly tests every facet of your game.” Fichardt leaves Aberdeen with the title that eluded him 12 months ago and as the first professional tournament winner on the New Course at Trump International Golf Links.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments. Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. GOLFRSA NAMES EXPERIENCED QUARTET FOR PRESTIGIOUS SPIRIT INTERNATIONAL GolfRSA has selected an accomplished quartet of Bryan Newman, Jack Buchanan, Kyra van Kan and Samantha Whateley to represent South Africa at the 2026 Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship, to be played at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas, from 10-15 November. The biennial event will bring together 20 of the world’s leading amateur golf nations in a unique mixed-team format, with South Africa one of only three countries, alongside the United States and Mexico, to have competed

in every edition since the tournament’s inception. South Africa has enjoyed several memorable performances at the Spirit International. The Proteas recorded their best overall finishes with tied fifth-place results in 2011 and 2013, while Martin Vorster and Sam Simpson produced one of the country’s finest displays in 2019 by claiming the men’s team silver medal. Christo Lamprecht and Kieron van Wyk combined for the lowest final round of the tournament during South Africa’s top-10 finish in 2021, while the 2024 team placed ninth overall.

One of the most remarkable careers in Sunshine Tour history took another impressive turn on Friday as Jean Hugo won the Sunbet Challenge hosted by the Wild Coast Sun by a single shot. Hugo signed for a final round of 65 to win on eight under par, with Nikhil Rama his nearest challenger on seven under following a closing 68 at the end of a day in which he teed off as the leader.

Most significantly, this victory comes in a new era for him as a senior professional and following two victories on the Sunshine Legends Tour this year as well. He currently leads the Sunshine Legends Tour Order of Merit. Hugo teed off Friday’s final round of the Sunbet Challenge hosted by the Wild Coast Sun outside the top-10 in joint 11th place, but only two shots adrift of Rama.
This was the 50-year-old Hugo’s 22nd career victory on the Sunshine Tour, which moves him into the top five of all-time Sunshine Tour wins.
With three birdies on the front nine he moved himself into contention. But it was the back nine where Hugo’s experience came to the fore.
It was another incredible performance by a golfer who won his first Sunshine Tour title in his rookie season in 1999, and who has now won in every decade since then.

SUN INTERNATIONAL AND GARY PLAYER UNVEIL MAJOR COURSE CHANGES FOR “AFRICA’S MAJOR” The Gary Player Country Club golf course has undergone the most significant enhancements in its history ahead of the 2026 Nedbank Golf Challenge in honour of Gary Player, and as part of Sun International’s extensive investment into this iconic layout. John Collier Annual Survey THE CMASA 2026 CONFERENCE The Club Management Association of Southern Africa (CMASA) 2026 Conference, was recently held at Arabella from 23 to 25 August 2026, and it brought together club managers, industry professionals, partners and thought leaders from across Southern Africa. During his summation of the conference, the MC, Brent Lindeque identified five recurring themes namely: people, intention, the small things, adaptability, and experience, while the incoming Chairperson of CMASA, Sue Smith, closed the conference by emphasising that exceptional member experience must be an intentional goal, and that developing the next generation of professional club managers, through deliberate cultural succession, will be a leadership responsibility. While not a specific focus of the conference, what was interesting was how the concept of sustainability, and its three pillars, namely environmental stewardship, social responsibility, governance and financial kept cropping up in the presentations. With a little bit of help from AI throughout the two-day conference, these words were mentioned in presentations at least once every 6 minutes.
In terms of environmental stewardship, this was the most sparsely represented of the three pillars in the sessions captured, but a modest through-line did emerge. The one explicit environmental recognition mechanism on the programme was the 2026 CMASA Sustainability Award, which was won by Atlantic Beach Estate. Another was the discussion by Pierre van Vuuren of Steyn City and Chris Bentley of LIV of the close relationship between the R&A agronomy section and the LIV tournament held at Steyn City. Social responsibility this was by far the most heavily represented pillar, running through Andrew Wolhuters presentation entitled ‘JUMP’ and its staff-relationship framework, the ‘Member Xperience’ five pillars presented by Peach Olive, and Healing & Dealing’s leadership-wellness framework discussed by Thuli Kakaza and issues such as burnout, chronic stress, executive fatigue, was named explicitly as an industry-level concern, rather than a private one. Anne Vermaak and Dietrich Uys spoke about the Golf RSA/PGA growth strategy’s focus on women and under-35s, while Joey Evans in
in his presentation ‘Para to Dakar’ emphasised a physical-versus-emotional resilience message. The CEO of Congressional Golf Club in the USA, Jeffrey Kreafle’s own account of his career path, in ‘Secure the Job of your Dreams’, reinforced the same investment-in-people message from the individual’s side; persistent, deliberate skill-building framed as something people owe themselves, not just something clubs owe their staff. Governance was demonstrated more than discussed. The AGM itself modelled the procedural rigour: quorum, minutes approval, committee election, and a clean chairperson handover from Francois Swart to Sue Smith. Carel du Toit’s AI session called for formal AI policies, a named accountability owner, and extended governance thinking into a genuinely new risk area for the industry. The LIV Golf case study illustrated multi-stakeholder governance, at a scale most member clubs will never individually manage. Read together, Jeffrey Kreafle’s three sessions made the case for treating culture itself as a governed, strategic system, rather than a soft HR add-on. Culture: Q&A described hiring and firing explicitly “by core values,” a structural move from a traditional to a division system to sharpen accountability, and over-communicating with the board during difficult periods to keep governance and culture aligned goals under pressure. ‘Lessons Learned on the Trails’, reinforced the same discipline from a personal-leadership
angle: “process goals over outcome goals” and daily accountability trackers amount to a governance system applied to individual leaders, not just boards. ‘Secure the Job of your Dreams’, closed the loop by treating hiring itself as a governed process — a repeatable interview-preparation system. Financial excellence was the clearest quantitative ESG pillar of the conference. The CEO of CMASA, Roxanne Reeves reported strong revenue growth and surplus, and described an industry in a strengthening, increasingly capital-disciplined financial position. Jeffrey Kreafle’s sessions added a leadership-quality lens to the financial picture, with a 90% hiring-success target and a named, systemic approach to culture, implied a deliberate strategy to reduce the cost of mis-hires and staff turnover. The CEO of CMASA, Roxanne Reeves and her team must be congratulated on presenting a slick, polished performance of conference management and delivery, and to Bevan du Plessis and his team at Arabella, we say thank you. HARDING RETURNS TO WINNER'S CIRCLE IN IRELAND Justin Harding sealed his first victory for over five years after coming through a testing final round of the Irish Challenge at Killeen Castle. The South African signed for a one under par 71 in Co. Meath to reach 13 under par for the week, one stroke ahead of his compatriot Louis Albertse and Frenchman Mathieu Decottignies-Lafon. Harding jumps 116 places to 25th on the season-long Road to Mallorca Rankings and admitted he wasn’t sure this moment would come. “This feels unbelievable and I didn’t think this was going to come,” he said. “I’ve been harping on about playing well but that doesn’t mean you’re going to get over the line. I’ve had a lot of good moments in golf and I’ve been lucky. It’s a good win as it gives me chances and a bit of a refocus going forward.”

• He was born on the 8th November 1921 in Bettendorf, Iowa and passed away on March the 21st 2014 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. • His parents were poor farmers who had lost their land in the 1920s and our mystery golfer started as a caddie for a local dentist in the mid-1930s. • He turned professional in 1939. He joined the military in 1942 and served in the U.S. Navy as a quartermaster. Within two weeks after his discharge from the service, he was on the PGA’s winter golf tour with pro friends trying to qualify for PGA Tour events. • After a few years of competing in local and PGA Tour events, he decided to play full-time on the Tour for two years. Within six months, he had his first victory, at the 1955 U.S. Open. Winning an 18-hole Sunday playoff by three strokes over his idol, Ben Hogan, at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. • In 1993, needing money to salvage a little golf course he owned in rural Arkansas that had been damaged by flooding, a place he called Li’l Bit of Heaven, he sold his 1955 U.S. Open gold medal. • In 1990, he was inducted into the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame.
