CONGRATULATES OUR SAG AWARD NOMINEE
LEONARDO DICAPRIO OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE,
THE REVENANT
January 30, 2016
Ladies and Gentlemen of SAG-AFTRA, Welcome to the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards®, the fourth to be presented by our newly merged union, SAG-AFTRA. Tonight belongs to you, in celebration of the outstanding acting performances of 2015. The evening is being simulcast live on TNT and TBS, and seen by millions of viewers who include most of your colleagues in SAG-AFTRA. This evening we present the 52nd Annual Life Achievement Award to Carol Burnett, a television icon whose direct line to our laughter has captured our hearts for decades. We’ll also take a look at what our calling, this business called “show,” means to us, as chronicled in movies and television shows past. Every film and television clip you see tonight is presented through the generosity of the Directors Guild of America, the Writers Guild of America, and the American Federation of Musicians. IATSE and the Teamsters have for years supported the SAG Awards while representing their respective memberships. We thank each and every union member – the finest directors, writers, musicians and crews in the world – whose work is on display in each of our clip presentations. We couldn’t do tonight’s show without their help, just as we couldn’t do our work on the set without them. Our partners People Magazine and the Entertainment Industry Foundation host the post-awards gala for the 20th consecutive year tonight on the main stage of the Shrine, directly adjacent to our showroom. In so doing People and EIF support the newly rechristened SAG-AFTRA Foundation – their way of acknowledging the charitable work you do for others. The Screen Actors Guild Awards helps support the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s emergency assistance and catastrophic health care funds, scholarship program, and community literacy campaign, among other endeavors. Finally, to our nominees: your work makes us all proud to be actors. SAG-AFTRA Board of Directors

Life Achievement Award
Carol Burnett
omedic trailblazer, actor, singer, dancer, producer and author Carol Burnett will accept the 2015 Life Achievement Award, presented by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, in what will be a highlight of the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards. This prestigious honor is presented annually to an actor who fosters the "finest ideals of the acting profession" as embodied in career achievements and humanitarian accomplishments. The SAG Life Achievement Award will join Burnett’s record of preeminent industry honors, which include the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a Kennedy Center Honor and its Mark Twain Prize for Humor, a Peabody Award, the Television Critics Association's Career Achievement Award, dozens of Emmy Awards®, five Golden Globe Awards, five American Comedy Awards, 12 People’s Choice Awards, an Ace Award, a Horatio Alger Award, both Crystal and Lucy Awards from Women in Film, the TV Land Legend Award, the Jimmy Stewart Museum's Harvey Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. SAG-AFTRA President Ken Howard said, “Carol Burnett is a creative dynamo and a comedic genius, whose innate love of actors led to the creation of an ensemble cast that made The Carol Burnett Show a masterpiece of variety programming. She embodies the generosity and courage that the greatest actors use in creating enduring and memorable characters, delighting and inspiring millions of viewers and thousands of comedic actors. She took risks as a performer and through her courage, encouraged fellow actors to try new things and always, always reach for the sky." Born in San Antonio and raised in a shabby section of Hollywood, Burnett's dream of applying to the University of California, Los Angeles came true thanks to a $50 anonymous donation. After moving to New York City, Burnett made her mark as a member of The Garry Moore Show ensemble and for her Tony®-nominated performance in the original Broadway musical production of Once Upon a Mattress. Her rise to household name came in 1967, when The Carol Burnett Show premiered on CBS with a talented ensemble featuring Harvey Korman, Tim Conway, Vicki Lawrence and Lyle Waggoner. Burnett’s portrayal of “Starlet” O’Hara in a Gone with the Wind parody is always counted among the top 10 greatest moments in television history. Its famous Bob Mackiedesigned “curtain-rod” dress now resides at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Named in 2007 by TIME magazine as one of “100 Best Television Shows of All Time,” and by Variety in 2011 as one of "The 25 Shows That Changed Television," The Carol Burnett Show ran for 11 years, averaged 30 million viewers per week, and received 25 Emmy Awards, making it one of the most honored shows in television history.
In 2012, the Time Life release of the show on DVD set a record by selling more than 4 million DVDs in six months. In 2015, the never-before seen "lost episodes" of the show's first five seasons completed the compilation. Burnett’s film credits include John Huston's version of the musical Annie; Peter Bogdanovich’s Noises Off; Robert Altman's A Wedding, and Alan Alda’s Four Seasons. On Broadway she starred in A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters, Stephen Sondheim's musical “review” Putting It Together; and Ken Ludwig’s farce Moon Over Buffalo. She starred in the highly acclaimed television movies Friendly Fire and Life of the Party: The Story of Beatrice, produced and starred in numerous specials and guest-starred on such series as Glee, Hot in Cleveland, and Law and Order: SVU. Burnett has written three New York Times-bestselling memoirs: One More Time, followed by This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection, and Carrie and Me: A MotherDaughter Love Story, both Grammy® nominees for best spoken word recordings, She added playwright to her credits when she and her daughter, Carrie Hamilton, wrote Hollywood Arms. Sadly, Carrie passed away four months prior to the play’s premiere at the Chicago Goodman Theatre in April 2002. Directed by Hal Prince, Hollywood Arms premiered on Broadway later that year. This year, Burnett already has been seen in the PBS telecast of A Celebration of American Creativity: In Performance at the White House and returned to CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 for a special episode. Burnett is in active development with CBS Films on Sunrise in Memphis, a theatrical project originated by her late daughter, Carrie, and is writing her fourth book entitled In Such Good Company, a poignant love letter to the golden era of television that simultaneously examines what made The Carol Burnett Show an iconic success. When not performing or occasionally presenting her Q & A format stage show Laughter & Reflection, she enjoys spending time with her husband Brian, her two daughters Erin and Jody, her grandsons, and her cat, Nikki. A passionate supporter of the arts and education, she has established several scholarships, including the Carol Burnett Musical Theatre Competition at UCLA, and the Carrie Hamilton Foundation and lent her support to the Sundance Institute, Young Playwrights Inc., the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara and the Hereditary Disease Foundation for which she was named a Lifetime Director.
