Annual General Meeting 2023 Our Annual General Meeting 2023 took place on 25 November 2023 at the Lazarus Ballroom. The meeting started with the Opening Address by our Commodore, RADM Augustine Lim. This is his first AGM at the Club since he became the Commodore. Our Honorary Secretary, LTC Allan NG, presented a recap of the events of FY22/23 and also shared the upcoming Club events for 2024, including a ‘Members Party’ that the Club plans to host. He welcomed Members to share ideas for the event to make it an exciting gathering for everyone to partake in. Our Honorary Treasurer, ME6 Willis Tarn, provided the financial summary of the past year and the positive growth we have seen, indicating that the Club has demonstrated the ability to grow sustainably. Our Honorary Secretary also shared the Capital Investments and Facilities Improvements that were made in FY 22/23.

After the Club updates were shared, the Committee moved on to address the matters that Members sent to be discussed in the meeting. The Honorary Secretary responded to the issues and thanked them for reaching out to the Management with their concerns. The official proceedings ended as our Commodore presented tokens of appreciation to the outgoing Members of the Management Committee and letter of appointment to the newly elected ones. Refreshments were provided to the attendees at the end of the AGM. We thank all the Members who took part in the Meeting and look forward to incorporating your feedback in the coming year.

Q1: How did your sailing journey come about?

Q3: What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?

My brother was a part of Greendale Primary school’s sailing CCA. In 2014, when I was in P2, I was asked if I would also like to join the sailing CCA and I did. After joining the CCA, I attended the GKA course at SAFYC. I didn’t think about racing until P4.

SAFYC is like “home” to me. It’s where my sailing journey really started. With GKA at Sembawang, then B squad, A Squad and HP squad for optimist class, first at Tanah Merah then onto NSRCC. In 2021 I came back to SAFYC to start my ILCA journey and at the same time, found my love for sailing again. SAFYC’s coaches gave me “my foundation” and encouraged me in the early years. Coach Iggy, Coach Xiao Dong and Coach Hu, all contributed to the sailor I am today.

Q2: What’s your favourite aspect of sailing? My favourite aspect of sailing would be racing. I enjoy the competitiveness from racing as well as the adrenaline before the race starts. To me Regattas are checkpoints to show how much I’ve improved. Regattas are really good learning points as it gives experience that you cannot get just from training. Every race is different and unpredictable, and this makes racing interesting.

Q4: How was your preparation like in the months leading up to the Asian Games? Who were your biggest supporters? As we didn’t have much time after the selection trials, preparation for the Asian Games was very hectic. 07 | BOSUN'S CALL

There was overseas training, in Greece and China near the Asian Games sailing venue. When in Singapore, there was plenty of on-water training. I also had strength and conditional training at NYSI (National Youth Sports Institute) We also had access to a sports psychologist and sports nutritionist, so it took a full mind and body preparation to get me ready. It really was a team effort. There’s also the stuff you don’t see like the photo shoots, and Asian Games uniform fitting sessions, that had to be scheduled between the training and the travel. I’m thankful for the support from Coach Liu Hong, my fellow ILCA4 NTS squad members, Singapore Sailing federation and my tutors at Nanyang Polytechnic. But my biggest supporters are, Mum and Dad- they have been there from the beginning, through all the ups and downs. Q5: How did it feel to represent Singapore and what was your experience with your fellow competitors throughout the Games? Representing Singapore at the Asian Games is something I hadn’t experienced before. When you win a medal for Singapore, the feeling, it’s “special”, it’s addictive. Everyone at the games were really friendly and I had a lot of fun getting to know new people from other countries. On water the competition was tough but on land, everyone’s a friend.

Q6. What are some of your biggest takeaways from the Games and a memorable moment that you will always cherish from your time there? The biggest takeaway from the Asian Games, is the “Singapore Team Spirit”, it’s phenomenal. The seniors and the support staff were very helpful and full of encouragement and advice. Everyone in the team was so nice. One example- I had to finish ahead of another sailor to ensure overall 3rd placing (Bronze) and many of the seniors went through strategies with me which I could use in my final race to try and ensure I finished ahead of the other sailor. Having the wealth of experience and knowledge on hand and willing to help was unbelievable. Q7: How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies? Managing sailing around studies has been a challenge but time management has helped make it easier. My course is very project based with a lot of group presentations and as I was away a lot during the semester. It’s quite

disruptive for the group projects. I couldn’t attend a few of the presentations, so I had to video my part of the presentations and submit them separately. Prior to flying out to the Asian Games I had to reschedule my end-of-semester projects and tests with my subject tutors and have them all completed. But my school and course tutors were overall supportive and helpful. Q8: For you, what makes a good sailor? What are a few words of encouragement you would like to offer aspiring sailors? Personally, I think having fun while sailing is what makes a good sailor. For me, I try to have as much fun as I can during trainings as I find that whenever I’m having fun, I feel more motivated to go to trainings as well as work harder at trainings. Trust the process. Q9: What are your dreams and goals in your sailing journey ahead? I remember completing the “sailor of the month” for the SAFYC Bosun Call magazine while sailing Optimist and being asked what my goal was, and I said my goal was to make the Singapore NTS (National Training Squad). Back then I would never have thought that I would represent Singapore at the Asian Games. I think I will continue sailing for as long as I enjoy it. It would be nice to represent Singapore again at overseas events like SEA Games and Asian Games with an ultimate goal of representing Singapore at the Olympics. But I know that it will be a very tough journey.

Our annual 46th Singapore ILCA Open was held on 2 and 3 December 2023. The Regatta saw a total of 72 sailors across the ILCA 4, 6, and 7 fleets.

The first day saw a late start due to the slow building winds where AP over H was flown on water, sending the sailors back to shore. It was only after lunch that D flag was flown onshore, signaling for the sailors to launch and proceed to the race area. The shifty winds and flowing currents posed a challenge to the sailing conditions hence only 2 races were run for all ILCA fleets. The second and final day of the race experienced light and shifty winds too. Unfortunately, race 2 for the day was abandoned at Mark 2 for the ILCA 4 fleet due to the light winds. The Regatta concluded with 4 races run for the ILCA 6 and 7 fleets, and 3 races for the ILCA 4 fleet. An awards ceremony was held on the second day to recognise the winners of the race. We thank all participants for their sporting enthusiasm and also extend our gratitude to all the volunteers at the event, without whom, this event would not have been successful.

Bi-Annual Trophy Race (BTR) The Bi-Monthly Trophy Race (BTR) consists of six races scheduled every two months throughout the calendar year. In 2023, the BTR events took place on the following dates: 7 January 2023, 4 March 2023, 6 May 2023, 1 July 2023, 2 September 2023, and 11 November 2023. The series experienced favorable winds and currents; ensuring equitable races for all the participants. In the last BTR on 11 November 2023, Premium Cru successfully tried flying their spinnaker too! We were also happy to have friends from Changi Sailing Club join us for some of the races.

Promising Sailor- Elijah Ong Q1: How did your sailing journey come about? I happened to be watching the SEA Games/ Olympics on sailing. The sailors looked so cool and confident and I told myself that I want to be like them! Hence, I decided to join the GKA when I was 9!

Q3: What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club? I love going to SAF Yacht Club because I got to make many good friends and got trained by good SAFYC coaches like Coach Edward (ex-SAFYC coach), Coach Iggy, Coach Low and Coach Xiao Dong!

Q2: What’s your favourite aspect of sailing? My favourite aspect of sailing is feeling the wind on my face, and working my brain to think of different strategies to sail faster.

Q4: Could you share your most memorable sailing experience? My most memorable sailing experience was during my Raffles Marina Optimist Regatta 2023 where I had a good start, rounded the mark FIRST and had my first “bullet”!!! Q5: What about your worst experience in sailing? My worst sailing experience was during my very first Regatta (NSC Cup 2022) where I was still a newbie and couldn’t find the Mark 1 and went off course by a lot.

Q6: Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they? I am also into running and badminton. I just recently got introduced to badminton when my buddies Gerome and Caleb brought rackets to school where we played during recess and I enjoyed the game a lot. Q7: How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies? Balancing sports and academics is indeed not easy. Proper time management is very important. I will usually work out a schedule with my parents and plan my school work around my trainings. Q8: For you, what makes a good sailor? To me, a good sailor is one who accepts their mistakes and changes for the betterAlways listens to their coaches and asks when they are in doubt. Finally, a good sailor is one who ALWAYS BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES AND NEVER GIVES UP! Q9: What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? My personal goals are to do well for each succeeding Regatta, And hopefully one day, I can be good enough to represent Singapore for Regattas and to make sailor friends from all around the world! Q10: Any Regattas you are looking forward to participating this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition? I am looking forward to participate in the upcoming CSC Optimist Championships 2023 as this will be the first time I will be participating in this regatta as a gold fleeter! I will prepare myself for the regattas by reading through all my sailing notes, sleep early the night before, have a good hearty breakfast on the regatta mornings and most importantly hydrate myself throughout the races!

Promising Sailor- Julien Petracco Q1:How did your sailing journey come about? I was first introduced to sailing by my form teacher, Mrs Wee who was in charge of the sailing CCA for my school. As for sailing competitively, I had my Opti racer certification for a year before joining my school team and Regattas. Q2:What's your favourite aspect of sailing? I enjoy sailing in strong winds when the boat is moving very fast, as when I hike out, it feels like I'm gliding above water. I also feel a sense of accomplishment when I do well in Regattas.

Q4:Could you share your most memorable sailing experience? My most memorable sailing experience would probably be when I got 2nd place in a Regatta for the first time. My family, including my grandparents were cheering for me all the way. The following Regatta I got 2nd place again! I finally got 1st place 2 Regattas after and the moment I walked up to receive my medal, I heard my family and friends cheer for me and it is something I will remember for years to come.

Q3:What can you say about your time with SAF yacht club? I enjoy spending time with the good friends I have made during the training sessions. I am also grateful for my amazing coaches- Coach Xiao Dong, Coach Low, Coach Iggy, Coach Mike and Coach Edward for teaching me well all these years.

Q5:What about your worst experience in sailing? I was not well during 2 Regattas including an overseas one and did rather badly in them. My parents told me that every athlete, even Olympic ones have their off days and losing streaks. I felt encouraged by that and told myself not to look back and instead, try to do better for the next Regatta. Q6:Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes then what are they? I love running and I also like to wave board, wakeboard and mountain bike. I also love to ski and am excited to try snowboarding next!

Q7:How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies? I often do my homework while waiting for my mom to pick me up from the sailing centre or school and if I am not able to complete it, I finish it at home before eating. Q8:For you, what makes a good sailor? To me, being a good sailor is not only about doing well in Regattas: to be a good sailor you need to have the determination and also get a feel of the wind direction and currents, as they change very fast. You must also accept feedback from coaches during briefings and debrief. Q9:What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? My personal goals in sailing would be to improve with every training and also to do well consistently in every Regatta. Even though I started late in competitive sailing, my dream is to represent Singapore and to make my country proud. Q10:Are there any Regattas you are looking forward to participating in this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition? I look forward to every Regatta as they are all chances for me to do better and get my national ranking lower. Although there are times I may not do well, I don't give up.

The Club hosted students from the South View Primary School on 9 November 2023 as a part of their ‘Education and Career Guidance’ segment. This is the second year that the Club has hosted the school for this segment.

South View Primary School Excursion

The students arrived at the Club by 10 a.m. where they were first greeted by Allan Mok, Senior Marina and Clubhouse Operations Manager, and were then shown a short video clip on the history and operational facilities of the Club. In a departure from last year’s program, this year we treated the students to a short boat ride on the waters around the Club. We had Jason Swee, our Seasports Manager teach them the basics of sailing, followed by a short demo on how to put on a life jacket. The students were also able to see some boats being launched while waiting for their boat at the Pontoon area. Many of them had numerous questions about the nautical aspects of the trip, and it was gratifying to see many enjoying themselves. The tour wrapped up by 12 p.m. as our HR Manager, Peggy, presented each student with a small RSN Memento -a Navy themed folder. In return, the school presented us with a plaque to thank us for our hospitality. 20 | BOSUN'S CALL

Navy@Vivo: 16 November 2023 On 16 November 2023, 11 Members of SAFYC attended the Navy@Vivo event at Harbourfront at 3 p.m. The event not only offered a glimpse into the Navy's world but also created a platform for Members to interact with navy personnel and gain a deeper appreciation for their dedication and service. There was a Central Court Exhibition with interactive displays and games that the Members could take part in. They also got an opportunity to get on board and explore the largest vessel in the RSN Our Members were at the venue until 5 p.m. and were also issued Goodie bags from the Navy. We extend our gratitude to the Republic of Singapore Navy for this special invitation extended to our Members and for their kind hospitality throughout the visit.

Navy@Vivo: 17-19 November 2023 After a 4-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Navy@Vivo2023, was held at Vivo City from 17 November 2023 to 19 November 2023. We were honoured to be given the opportunity to setup a booth throughout the 3 days course of the event. We offered the public a glimpse into our nautical community and shared details of promotions with them for Club Memberships and bookings for event spaces at SAFYC. About 60,000 people were recorded to have visited across the 3-day Navy@Vivo2023 event. We had plenty of people from different backgrounds visiting our booth to know more about the Club and what we have to offer. Almost everyone that visited our booth were very impressed with the selection of Seasports courses that are available for them to explore sailing as a sport.

Furthermore, our affordable Powered Pleasure Craft Driving License (PPCDL) course caught quite the attention of a few Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) personnel. We had the privilege of having the Senior Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Heng Chee How, visit our booth to know more about SAF Yacht Club. The Chief of Defence Force Aaron Beng Yao Cheng and Commander of Maritime Security Task Force, RADM Lim Kian Hua Augustine were also present at the event. Overall, the 3 days course of Navy@Vivo2023 has been nothing less of an exhilarating experience to end 2023.

Senior Clubhouse Operations Warden

What's the most fun part of your job? I meet a lot of people while working at the Club and it’s nice when they approach me to talk. I enjoy having conversations with them.

What is your role at SAFYC? I joined SAFYC in 2015 and have been working as the Senior Clubhouse Operations Warden here. Ensuring the security at the Club is my prime responsibility and I monitor individuals' access to the Club at the Guardhouse. I also drive the Club's shuttle van to transport people to and from the Club. What does a day in your work look like? My day starts with transporting the staff and Members to the Club on the shuttle van. I usually make 7 trips a day with the shuttle. The Guardhouse is then where I spent most of my day in addition to patrolling the Club premises.

What is one thing about yourself that not many people know? Haha, I am an open book! Everybody knows everything about me as I talk to people all the time. If you had a superpower, what would you want that to be? I would like to have the ability to read people’s minds. Sometimes, it's easier to have a conversation when you know what the other person is thinking and what they want. What’s your biggest achievement so far in life? My family is my biggest achievement. My daughter married a good husband and I also have an amazing grand-daughter. 28 | BOSUN'S CALL
