GM’s Message Dear Members, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all the members who joined us recently. I invite you to be a part of our various interest groups and be involved in our thriving nautical community. As we continue our efforts to engage all members, we have planned a number of activities for everyone to enjoy. Our annual Offshore Fishing Competition scheduled on the 24 October to 29 October is now a week-long competition instead of the usual 1 day event. We extend a warm invitation to all anglers to participate in this event where we have attractive prizes to be won. Another event to take note of in your calendar is our Annual General Meeting to be held on 13 November 2021. Feel free to join in the discussion and get to know your fellow members as well as the members of our Management Committee. For our sailing enthusiasts, the final Keelboat race that will conclude our Bi-Monthly Trophy Race 2021 series will be held on 06 November 2021 while our most-sought after national ranking regatta, the Singapore Laser Open will be held on 04-05 December 2021. Details of the regatta will be announced closer to the event date. For an overview of what we have in store for the coming months, please turn to page 17 in our magazine. You may also keep abreast with the upcoming events and happenings at the club via our social media and website. Our boating and sailing fleets continue to grow with more and more kids and adults discovering the joy of the sea. Bi-Monthly Trophy Race July & September 2021 series The 4th BTR on 10 July 2021 had a start with heavy downpour all morning. The rain eventually stopped right at the 2pm mark and just in time for the race to begin. The race started off at 2pm sharp with 8 participating boats on the

starting point on time. The race started off in light winds of 3-6 knots throughout the race course. However, immediately after the boats rounded the turn around point, the wind dropped to almost near 0 knots. Scarlett O' Hara barely made it to the finishing line with 40 seconds

to spare. The rest of the fleet was unfortunately scored with a TimeLimit Expire (TLE). It was unfortunate that winds ceased in the middle of the race and left a lot of boats on stand-by. Bravo Zulu to all sailors who pushed on to try and reach the finish line! Thank you for being as optimistic as us even though we are faced with the wet weather and on-off winds.

The September BTR started out with a strong fleet of 9 participating boats, with 3 visiting boats (Mystic River, Rumbottle, TODAK 2 and Zephyr). The day started out with a good constant breeze of 8-12 knots, which allowed the race committee to run a slightly longer course than usual. The 9 sailors managed to sail down the Singapore Straits in shifty and gusty offshore wind, which made it super challenging for all the boats. In the end, our Competent Crew

Course participants on the SB20 managed to win the race at the helm, followed by Mystic River closely behind in 2nd. We look forward to seeing everyone's participation in the next and final race of our BTR for this year on 06 November 2021. SOCIAL EVENT

Get-Kids-Afloat (GKA) Course Our August was fully packed with GKA sessions every week and one class was conducted in September! Despite the rainy weather in the mornings of our courses, the afternoons gave the kids an ample opportunity to test their skills on the water. In learning how to sail, it is a good thing to remember not to underestimate the eagerness of kids to truly learn based on their age. Our youngest participants were 7 year old kids who amazingly displayed confidence in handling their own boats out in the sea! The rainy weather also brought along strong gusts of wind throughout August and September. This turned our calm seas into a perfect training ground for the kids to test out their reflexes in unpredictable sailing conditions. One moment they are moving along calmly and the next they’ll be watching out for the boom! All the know-hows of sailing is taught step-by-step by our sailing instructors. This allows encouragement for the love of the water, sailing, and all that sailing involves, especially having fun! Our last batch of GKA

kids enjoyed learning about different terminologies, knots, rigging, capsize recovery, as well as the basics of launching and recovery with guidance at our beach area. Safety comes first so all sailors and instructors wear life jackets on and around the water. Kids that have completed our GKA course can then move on to our C Squads and B Squads which continues their learning and helps advance their skills in sailing. These squads are all about getting more

time on the water. This is a great way for the kids to practice and refine the skills they have learned from GKA. We closed the course registration for our October, November and December classes as has been fully subscribed since early July! If you are interested in signing-up your kids for this amazing sailing course, please refer to the upcoming course dates we have in the first quarter of 2022.

Daddy signed me up for GKA at Sembawang when I was in P1. It was fun and so he continued to sign me up for C-Squad and then B-Squad. Then he asked me if I still want to continue with racing. I said yes and here I am, training and racing actively. What’s your favourite aspect of sailing? I get to make a lot of new friends who are passionate about sailing.

What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club? With SAF Yacht Club, my weekends are always filled with fun and excitement.

For you, what makes a good sailor? A good sailor is someone who has good sportsmanship, a good sense of environmental conditions, and can perform well consistently.

Could you share your most memorable sailing experience? In one of my recent races, I took a path that is different from everyone else and rounded the mark first. Eventually I finished 2nd for that race.

What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? I hope that one day I will be able to represent Singapore in international sailing competitions.

What about your worst experience in sailing? In another one of my recent races, I capsized just 50m away from the finishing line. What could have been an 8th position finish, ended up with me finishing 20+. It was so frustrating. Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they? I learn and practice Aikido since I was 4 years old. I like to swim leisurely with my daddy and brother. I also enjoy cycling with my family at the various parks in Singapore. How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies? I try to finish all my homework before the weekend so that I can fully enjoy the sailing.

Any regattas you are looking forward to this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition? With the current pandemic situation causing many regattas to be cancelled, every opportunity to race is precious and I look forward to participating in every one of them. I will go for every training session leading up to the regattas and put my best in every training race.

Could you share your most memorable sailing experience? My most memorable experience was during the gold fleet qualifier. I had a great time with my friends in that regatta, including making new friends from people from other classes.

How did your sailing journey come about? My mother signed me up for GKA at SAFYC together with my younger sister and cousins. It was only meant to be a four day course, but I greatly enjoyed that sailing experience and decided to continue my sailing journey. What’s your favourite aspect of sailing? The massive adrenaline rush you get while sailing especially during strong winds. What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club? My time in SAFYC has been extremely enjoyable. I greatly treasure spending

What about your worst experience in sailing? I had done really poorly on day 1 and was hoping to improve my placing on day 2 of the regatta. However, there was barely any wind on day 2 and the current was extremely strong. Needless to say, there were no races that day.

How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies? I ask my Teachers for an extension if i need it, and ensure that i study hard and hand in good quality homework. For you, what makes a good sailor? Good sportsmanship and being able to make friends with other sailors. What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? I hope to eventually get into national team A, even though I know that won’t be easy. Any regattas you are looking forward to this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition? I look forward to participating in NSC cup 1, especially since there have hardly been any races so far this year.

Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they? Not sure if this counts, but we do push-ups and sit-ups in school band, and carrying the tuba up the stairs is not easy.

Navy Success Story Navy? Crazy? Some people may say it takes a lot of craziness to join the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) as a career given its intense training and commitment. Is it really so?

In this issue, we spoke to MAJ Daryl Quah, a naval officer and SAFYC dinghy sailor, to find out the purpose and what keeps him going in this “crazy” career.

The RSN is very much like a big family - we call it the Navy family. In this close-knitted family, we watch out and take care of one another, making sure that nobody is ever left behind.

Share with us what sparked your interest in a career with the RSN?

What do you find fulfilling in your everyday work?

MAJ Quah: As an avid dinghy sailor since my younger days, it was not surprising that I had a natural affinity with the sea and the RSN. Of course, the RSN’s advertisement about the sun, sand and the sea was another huge draw!

MAJ Quah: What I find fulfilling is the purpose of our work - our efforts contribute to the overall security of Singapore and ensure that our sea lines of communication are kept open and accessible to allow trade and our economy to flourish.

Can you tell us more about the life and culture in the RSN?

What is your most memorable experience or defining moment in the RSN so far?

MAJ Quah: Life in the RSN is truly purposeful and dynamic – we are 24/7 on the front line of defence, protecting the everyday of Singaporeans. This immense sense of purpose of our job is what keeps me and my fellow sailors going. Furthermore, the opportunity to represent Singapore when we sail to the different foreign ports of call makes me feel proud to be serving in the RSN. Apart from the daily operations, the RSN also focuses on our professional

believe that the RSN is the right career for me. The most defining moment of my RSN career thus far was the opportunity to be deployed to the Gulf of Aden for counter-piracy operations under the Combined Task Force (CTF) 151 in 2010. This was the epitome of conducting real time maritime operations as we worked closely with foreign navies in ensuring regional safety and security. Furthermore, the RSN was handed the command of the CTF 151, giving us the chance to fly Singapore’s flag high and doing the country proud! What is the craziest thing that you have done in the RSN so far? MAJ Quah: What else can be crazier than signing on to be at the forefront of Singapore’s defence, handling maritime threats on a daily basis? It ain’t crazy, it’s the Navy! What advice would you give to those who are looking to join the RSN? MAJ Quah: If you are looking for a rewarding and challenging career, the RSN family welcomes you! Staff Spotlight Meet Sayed, our Marina Operations Officer!

What is your favorite part of working at the Club?

How long have you been working for SAFYC?

I do love exchanging stories and experiences with members that I encounter every day. Everybody always has something interesting to share. I also learn new things about boats every time I encounter new members with new boats coming in.

I have been working for the Club for 11 years now, I started around 2010. I actually discovered the club via newspaper when they posted an opening for a Marina staff. And that is where my journey with the Club began. Back then I was already working under Mr. Allan Mok and also until now. I was originally stationed at Sembawang but I also went to Changi to support the Marina there for only a year. After the Changi side closed down, I went back to Sembawang again. What is your role in the Marina operations of the Club? I am a Marina Officer. I facilitate the launching and recovery of boats and drive the tractor too. I also help out members when they have questions about their boats and assist in small repairs whenever I can. Any memorable experiences from your Marina work? Some memorable experiences I have are the ones wherein I have to rescue members when their boats are grounded or they are stuck in the sea. It is quite a rigorous physical job and it requires certain knowledge of towing people to safety.

I also get to handle different people with different attitudes and it is an interesting learning experience for me. What do you enjoy doing when you are not working? Do you have any hobbies? I enjoy fishing! It's my hobby since I was young. I fish in a lot of places but I frequently visit the southern side. So far, the biggest catch I had was an 80kg grouper! I also like to visit southern islands when I go for fishing. Where would you like to go on a dream destination? I would very much like to visit Saudi Arabia and fulfill my pilgrimage with my partner. I would be very happy to experience that. Do you have any pets? I have a fat cat. I adopted her a few years ago and her name is Makcu.

What’s your favorite place of all the places you’ve travelled? My trip to Bandung a few years ago (maybe in 2016 or 2017) was a memorable one. I was able to witness real lava from a volcano we visited! It was also cold and refreshing in Bandung. I was also quite happy to have tried their version of steamed Nasi Lemak and other amazing food options they offer! Use 3 words to describe yourself for people who do not know a thing about you? Friendly, safety-conscious at work, and quite direct and frank with words.

It gives me immense pleasure to be able to help and assist them in dire circumstances and I am always happy to lend a helping hand. What’s the most exciting part of your job? I get to visit interesting places and other neighboring Marina. The last once I visited was Nongsa Marina in Indonesia. It was a very good experience and I had fun.
