Commodore’s Message Dear Members, The first half of 2021 has passed by very quickly. During the first few months of the year, we had the opportunity to gradually ramp up activities at the club including offering more sea sports activities, opening of new F&B locations and rolling out more member activities. However, we had to take a pause on these events over the last few weeks as we moved into Phase 2 (Heightened Alert). As we look ahead to the second half of 2021, the management team and management committee are cautiously optimistic that we can get our plans back on track. The majority of our redevelopment plans have been completed and we hope that everyone is enjoying the new facilities. If you have not, I encourage you to consider a staycation at our exclusive private rooms. We are also starting on the final phase of works: the Marina wet berth expansion. The tender has recently commenced and we should be able to update on the detailed plans soon. We are excited with the increased interest in sea sports activities. Our 17th SAFYC Regatta Dinghy and Optimist held on 17-18 and 2425 April 2021 was a success and a multitude of sailors from different clubs have participated in the regatta. Congratulations to all the winners and we are absolutely thrilled to host this regatta and see the progression of every sailor in their own classes! Keelboaters are also a happy bunch as they are able to participate in the Bi-Monthly Trophy Race held on 8 May 2021 with Scarlett O’Hara clinching the first place. Our Get-Kids-Afloat for the June holidays were fully booked while our adult sailing courses are fully booked

17th SAFYC Regatta Dinghy & Optimist The weather was not in our favour on the first day of our 17th SAFYC Regatta Dinghy on Saturday, 17 April. The sky opened and rain started pouring from morning till late afternoon. No race was conducted for this day and our sailors had to go back on shore after the lightning warning signal was activated. The race committee held their post until afternoon trying to see if the weather will be better but the sky did not clear up, hence sailors were notified that there will be no race held as to ensure their safety. The second day of the race on Sunday, 18 April welcomed everyone with a bright sun and the best winds! Everyone was excited to finally race and the anticipation was intense with everyone’s “race face” on! The dinghy classes who participated were Laser Standard & Radial, Laser 4.7 and the newcomer, the 29er class! Everyone had their own sailing styles and strategies to try and win the races.

Each class completed 4 races and the regatta ended late in the afternoon. To prevent the formation of crowd outside the seasports office, results were posted at our website for everyone to refer to. We had to forego the awarding ceremony as well to ensure that there will be no forming of large groups after the races.

Sailors and their parents were as excited as we were for the first day of our 17th SAFYC Regatta Optimist on Saturday, 24 April. It was also raining on the first day of this regatta but the rain was not heavy enough to cancel the races. We were able to squeeze in 4 races for the whole day and everyone was pumped even though the weather did not improve until the last race. One of the perks of the rain was the good wind! Wind conditions were in favour of the sailors and everyone made sure to take advantage of it and use it in their manoeuvres to win. Good weather greeted us on the second day of the race on Sunday, 25 April but the wind was non-existent! The morning was full of anticipation for the race to begin but no wind means no race can be started! Our patience was not in vain as we finally got a good wind reading of 5-6 knots later in the afternoon around 3pm onwards! Only one race was conducted for the last day of the regatta and sailors have shown top notch performance for the sole race of the day from all the waiting time they spent for a good wind!

Bi-Monthly Trophy Race Sailors were met with gloomy skies and shifty winds in our 3rd Bi-Monthly Trophy Race (BTR) on 8 May 2021. A total of 5 boats participated in the race despite the impending storm. Scarlett O’Hara sailed incredibly well and took the first place of the race. Innis Free came second and Millennium 2 at third place. The weather was not on our side and in turn, only one race was conducted. Our BTR sessions are for sailors with all levels of experience where anyone can practice and develop their sailing skills with a little bit of competition! Members without sailboats can join in the fun too with our sailboat charters. You may also contact our seasports department if you are a lone skipper looking for a crew! We have a lot of interested sailors who would love to join you and sail on weekends. If you are interested to sail but do not know where to begin, we recommend you to check our sailing courses starting with our Basic Sailing Course. This course will teach you the essentials and get you introduced to the wonderful world of sailing! If

you have the background of sailing but would like to move up with the big boys (keelboats), sign up a Competent Crew Course session and we’ll get you up and ready for some keelboat action! Powered Pleasure Craft Driving License (PPCDL) Course at sea, practical boat handling and many more! The practical part of the course will give the students a first-hand experience and training in how to handle and manoeuvre the boat properly. It’s the most fun part as students will get the chance to drive the boat with the guidance of our friendly and helpful captains. An option like our PPCDL course will not only give you a pathway to getting your license after passing the required examinations, it will also ensure you have ample knowledge and skills in handing a boat on your own. Boating is definitely an enjoyable and relaxing hobby. Even though its fun, one must learn how to properly operate a powerboat to ensure his/ her safety and the people aboard the craft. If you enjoy cruising on the water and think you might want to get your own boat, hesitate no more — its a great decision. Our Powered Pleasure Craft Driving License Course (PPCDL) is focused on maritime safety skills, which also promotes safe driving in our students. The sea is vast and can hold a number of possible hazards, which may not always be easy to spot. With larger and more powerful pleasure craft available than ever before, some jump right in at the deep end with little or no experience and without much knowledge about what could go wrong. By completing the course to get a boat driving license, you can develop your skills in maritime safety, improve safety for yourself and the general public. Safety on water is as important as safety on the roads. The implications of inadequately skilled boat operators being on the water, especially in busy waterways or sometimes very powerful craft, are obvious. Whether we’re talking jet skis or large cruisers,
unskilled or marginally skilled boat drivers pose obvious risks to themselves, their crews and those around them. The course is held over 2 days (Saturday and Sunday) managed by our veteran instructors. The theory part of the course will discuss common nautical terms, mechanical and electrical equipment and how to use them, what to do in emergencies, Singapore Port regulations, coastal navigation, how to prevent collisions

If you have taken the course in the past but would like to have additional practical lessons prior to your test, you may register for a refresher course on your own or make it more fun with ‘craft-pool’ with fellow past participants. Get-Kids-Afloat (GKA) Course More and more kids are interested in sailing and we definitely see their eagerness when out on the water! With the help of our Get-Kids-Afloat course, we provide a structured theory lessons for children to learn the basics of sailing while supporting them to learn at their own pace. Designed as an initial sailing experience for beginners, this is the program to see if your child likes sailing and wants to pursue a more advance training in the future. For this course, we use our fleet of optimist boats or dinghies for the taller kids. Our main focus is learning through fun exercises - we want children to love sailing and come back for more! Capsizing and righting the boat is a fundamental (and very fun!) skill that students learn at this stage as well. Once the kids know how to sail the boats on their own, its time to start showing everyone how alert they are! Which means its time to start having a go at sailing alone and do mark rounding basics and eventually do a mini racing activity with each other! Get the most out of your kid’s vacation with our fun sailing course. We’ve always had a phenomenal response for our Get-Kids-Afloat and we are more than happy to add more dates in the future. We want to make sure that everyone who would like to learn to sail gets the chance!

high waves and strong wind. During the 2020 Horsburgh Challenge, the wave and wind was so bad that it caused damage to my Jib sail extrusion and the furling drum. Just after the race upon returning to CSC, my engine quit on me. It was fouled up by scum churned up in the fuel tank during race. Though setbacks like these are not ideal, navigating through these difficulties have made me more prepared and an experienced sailor. What do you do in your free time aside from sailing?

Name: Ken Yap Boat Name: s/v Millennium 2 For all our readers who perhaps don’t know you yet, can you give us a little introduction about yourself? I’m Ken and I have been sailing for the past 20 years. For me sailing is a form of relaxation and it relieves me from stress I face at work. You can catch me at SAFYC almost every week doing preventive maintenance on my boat. Before the pandemic, I would go on a yearly sailing trips with my wife and 3 beautiful children around the region. Together with my family, we have been to Koh Lipe (Thailand), Sengat (Malaysia), and we have even sailed across the equator! Could you tell us a little about how and why you got into sailing? In my childhood days, I regularly went fishing with my Dad on our wooden powerboat or charter bumboats from “Ang Teng Beh Tau” - Clifford Pier. This made going out to sea very natural for me. Over the years, driving a powerboat around felt a little dull to me thus I decided to take up sailing and pick up some skills. My first sailboat was actually a hybrid, a MacGregor 256X. Not quite good as powerboat and also not quite good as sailboat, but gave me a taste of what sailing is about. This helped me seal my decision to get a keelboat and I have never looked back since.
We know you as a familiar face in our sailing committee but how long you have been a member of the Club? What made you join us? I’ve been SAFYC member for 22 years, since 1999! I did my PPCDL test at SAFYC-Sembawang and was impressed with the Club, hence I decided to join as member. What do you love about SAF Yacht Club? The people here are very friendly. There’s an ‘easy come easy go’ atmosphere - it reminds me of the kampong feeling. Whenever I need extra pair of hands, all I need to do is go over to the next boat or two and ask for help. It’s that easy. Do you have a significant/memorable sailing or regatta experience you have?
I am in the engineer profession therefore when I am not sailing, I enjoy working on boating stuff – fixing and improving certain aspects of my boat. I believe in preventive maintenance to corrective maintenance. About 6070% of my time is spent working on the boat as compared to sailing it. Its better to spend time at the dock fixing the boat rather than struggling with it out at sea. I also enjoy spending time with my family. Why were you inspired to step up as the new Captain of Sail? This is one way I can give back to our sailing fraternity and the Kampong spirit. Can you give us a sneak-peek into your plans for the future of sailing at the Club? We have Bi-Monthly Trophy Race but I think we should have more keelboat sailing events in-between the BTR. Also when Covid-19 situation allow, perhaps overnight sailing trips could be organised.
The yearly Horsburgh Challenge Regatta is always memorable. We don’t call it Horsburgh Challenge for nothing. First few years of the regatta, I always get seasick whenever we head out to the starting line. This was due to the lack of sleep as there was a lot of preparation work for the boat to be done and also the clearing of CIQP at 5.00am. Not forgetting the thoughts of high waves and strong winds makes my stomach churn. Not every year, but most years we get

What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club? SAF Yacht Club is a very fun place to train for sailing and I made a lot of good friends during sailing. The coaches also helped me a lot to become a better sailor.
How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies? I plan and make sure I finish all my homework right after school on school days, so that I do not need to use the weekends to finish my school work

Could you share your most memorable sailing experience? My most memorable sailing experience was during the Raffles Marina Regatta in 2019. Even though it was only my 2nd regatta, I managed to come in 6th place in one of the races. That gave me the confidence in my ability to do well in the sport if I put in hard work.
For you, what makes a good sailor? I think a good sailor is one that never gives up, even when it seems impossible. And a good sailor must have good sportsmanship as well.
How did your sailing journey come about? My elder brother started sailing in school CCA first and I followed his footsteps What’s your favourite aspect of sailing? Whenever I’m first across the finish line, that feeling is very good and it motivates me to improve and sail better.
What about your worst experience in sailing? My worst experience was the 1st regatta in 2019. My boat nose dive and a lot of water flooded the boat. Even though my boat did not capsize, I had to retire from that race eventually. Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they? I like to play soccer as well. Besides sailing training in the afternoon, I also go for soccer training on Sunday mornings.
What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? I am aiming to improve my ranking this year and hope to represent Singapore one day in sailing Any regattas you are looking forward to this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition? I was actually looking forward to participate in some overseas regatta that SAFYC organizes annually in Thailand, China or Japan. I actually had the opportunity to participate in Port Dickson Regatta in 2019 and I learned a lot from the overseas regatta experience. So I hope we can go overseas soon for sailing regattas.

What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club? This period training at SAFYC has been filled with great memories of nurturing coaching especially from Coach Xiao Dong and Coach Mike, and lots of encouragement from Uncle Sudin too. When I grow up, I am sure I will look back at these times at SAFYC with fond memories. Could you share your most memorable sailing experience? Apart from the usual fun we had in between races, one of the most memorable moment is when I see my parents on the spectator boat during one of NSC regattas. I know they had shared the tense moments with me when I round the marks. What about your worst experience in sailing? When I had my first silver fleet regatta, I had capsized due to the inclement weather conditions and ended up being the last few and the whole fleet were waiting for us to finish. Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they? I enjoy jogging as leisure activity with my family where we see it as time to bond as well.
How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies? Since I started sailing competitively, I learned to manage my time more effectively. I strive to finish my homework and revisions during pockets of time during school. For you, what makes a good sailor? A sailor is one who focus during trainings and regattas. Having a growth mindset is also important as coaches have invaluable experience to share. What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? One day, I want to able to wear the Singapore flag on my rash guard and represent Singapore in the Asian Championships. Any regattas you are looking forward to this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition? I am looking forward to all the upcoming regattas! With the pandemic, regattas are fewer than before. I hope everyone will continue to stay well and we can resume to days like before. Meanwhile, I will continue to work and improve on my physicals and mindset.

What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club? I have enjoyed my trainings especially with SAFYC HP squad. The boys are fun loving bunch and they made my weekends exceptionally awesome. I am also very appreciative of the patience of Coach Xiao Dong since I started my optimist journey.

Could you share your most memorable sailing experience? NSC Cup 2020 was probably the most memorable as it was the first regatta held after the Circuit breaker. That was a tough period where regattas were cancelled and trainings were put on hold for a while. I vividly remember how excited I was that day to be able to start racing again.
How did your sailing journey come about? I have tried out the GKA prior to my selection for CCA choices in school. Ever since then, I have been looking forward to every opportunity to sail.
What about your worst experience in sailing? During the CSC Silver fleet regatta 2019, I had a terrible headache from holiday jet lag. I remember feeling nauseous and hugging my forehead in between the race breaks. The rocking motion that I usually think nothing of was unbearable that day. Despite being the worst experience, it had also taught me perseverance. I was glad I managed to finish 6th overall that regatta.
What’s your favourite aspect of sailing? My favourite aspect of sailing is that I need to constantly think and strategize. Unlike other sports, conditions during every race is different.
Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they? I have enjoyed playing badminton with my brother occasionally. I also enjoy long hikes and walks with my family. How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies? With studies load up a notch this year, I usually stay up past my usual bedtime to finish up my schoolwork on training days. On other days, I will maximise my time to finish ahead of the deadlines whenever possible. For you, what makes a good sailor? A good sailor is one who stay hungry and focus, yet humble and respectful always. What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? I want to continue to excel and be better than yesterday and I wish to represent Singapore one day. Also, I would like to give back to the sailing community by becoming a sailing coach in future. Any regattas you are looking forward to this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition? Singapore Sailing Championship, I will increase my exercise regime to get fitter during the school holidays.

Navy Success Story A Career Unlike Any Other Never wanting to settle for a mundane desk-bound job, LTA Andria Tan, a naval officer and sailor from SAFYC, chose to embark on an unconventional and purposeful career path with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). It was a perfect fit for the girl who fell in love with the sea since young and she has never looked back on her career choice. Read on to find out more about her journey in the RSN! Share with us what sparked your interest in a career with the RSN? LTA Tan: When I was about to graduate from polytechnic, I was thinking about my career prospects and did not want a desk-bound job. I had just completed Diploma of Psychology Studies in Temasek Polytechnic and while I enjoyed what I was studying, I realised I preferred being more active, which is why I thought a career in the Singapore Armed Forces would be ideal for me. Given that I started sailing when I was 11 years old, I absolutely love being out at sea. By joining the RSN, I would be able to continue doing what I love and explore beyond the horizon. Most importantly, I would also be able to do my part to serve the nation. Can you tell us more about the life and culture in the RSN? LTA Tan: I would describe life in the RSN as dynamic. The job scope evolves across time and there’s always something new to learn, which makes the job more exciting and less mundane. As for the culture in the RSN, I would say that its like a family. Everyone looks out for one another, even outside of work! I had once participated in a Spartan Race with my ship crew because they wanted to go for the event together. We were less than prepared for the race itself, but I thoroughly enjoyed the bonding experience with the rest of my ship crew!

What do you find fulfilling in your everyday work? LTA Tan: I find being able to play a part in the defence of our country as fulfilling in my everyday work. While Singapore is in a time of peace, it is not something to be taken for granted. As such, being able to contribute in my own ways to deterrence as well as diplomacy, it makes me feel that I can safeguard our way of life which includes my loved ones. Which is your most defining moment in the RSN so far? LTA Tan: My most defining moment in the RSN thus far is when I attained my Certificate of Competency (COC) on board the frigate as a Midshipman. At the young age of 20, I was humbled to be granted the responsibility of overseeing the frigate in the harbour. It was the first time I felt that I could contribute to the ship harbour operations.
Have you done any crazy things in the RSN? LTA Tan: To me, being granted the responsibility of overseeing the frigate in the harbour is pretty crazy itself. In other words, it’s pretty astounding how the RSN trusts people as young as myself to take care and be incharge of a ship in harbour. What advice would you give to those who are looking to join the RSN? LTA Tan: If you’re looking for a challenge, look no further than the RSN. It may seem daunting but you can be rest assured to find a place in the Navy family that would be there for you.
