CARNIVAL BY THE STRAITS 2026

We are still buzzing from the incredible energy of our flagship Carnival By The Straits 2026 – Aloha Edition, which transformed the SAF Yacht Club into a sun-drenched waterfront paradise on 23 May Staying true to our theme, "Tides of laughter, Shores of fun," we were overjoyed to welcome both our cherished Members and the public for a day of pure festive magic

It was our pleasure to introduce several new experiences this year, ensuring there was something exciting for every age to discover Guests dived into the waves on our new "The Big Sweeper," caught the vibrant mood at our Sober Pool Party featuring DJ Victor Shaqur, and found a cool escape from the heat with our complimentary movie passes

This year, we were especially grateful for the partnership of Flora By The Sea, who joined us as co-host and played an instrumental role in bringing our vision to life Although a brief Cat 1 weather warning required us to pause our seasports for a short period, our community’s spirit remained undampened, and we were thrilled to see the fun resume with even more enthusiasm once the skies cleared.

On land, the brain-teasing Tiki Trap Challenge saw students testing their grit, while our highly anticipated Prawning Competition provided the surprise of the day proudly hosted by Gill’s Fishing, we were absolutely amazed to watch our younger participants out-fish the adults and take home the grand prize 2D1N staycation! Whether you were joining our hands-on experiential farming, trying your hand at archery, or treating yourself to a blissful, complimentary 10-minute massage expertly provided by the wonderful team at Atos Wellness, we loved seeing you make the most of our expanded activity zones

We want to extend our deepest, heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed supporters the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), who provided the free photo booth service as a great addition to our event activities, as well as the the Singapore Police Force, for adding so much value and meaningful engagement to our event.

For every Carnival By The Straits celebration, we proudly open our doors by providing complimentary tickets to meaningful organisations across Singapore This year, we were deeply honoured to partner with Club Rainbow (Singapore), an incredible charity that provides compassionate support to children with chronic illnesses and their families.

Seeing the joy that these families experienced as they explored our grounds was the absolute highlight of our celebration. We are dedicated to ensuring that our events create lasting, positive ripples, and we cannot wait to continue fostering these heartwarming connections within our community.

We are thrilled to unveil our latest initiative designed exclusively for our Members—the SAFYC Game Lounge! Once a month, we are transforming our Poolside Lounge into a dedicated weekend hangout spot, creating the perfect space for our Members to gather, unwind, and reconnect. Whether you are looking to challenge to a round of darts, test your steady hand with some UNO-Jenga, or get tangled up in a classic game of Twister, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Plus, we will be serving up some light snacks to keep the energy high while you socialise!

Our inaugural launch last 6–7 Jun was a fantastic success, and it was wonderful to see our Members dropping by to make the weekend truly special The atmosphere was electric as Members brought their A-game to the dartboard and shared plenty of laughs over intense rounds of Jenga. Seeing our community come together to enjoy some friendly competition and quality time is exactly what the SAFYC spirit is all about.

The SAFYC PPCDL Course is a comprehensive 2-day programme (8:30 AM - 7:30 PM, typically Sat & Sun) combining essential theory and hands-on practical skills. Completion of this course is a pre-requisite for applying for the PPCDL licence.

Myfavoriteaspectofsailingiswhenthereis very big wind, not very sunny and not a reallyrainyday Itfeelsreallycomfortable whenthewindblowsinmyface. Anditis not very sunny, which makes our bodies veryuncomfortableandhot.

Q4: Could you share your most memorablesailingexperience?

My most memorable sailing experience is when SAF brought me to Busan, South Korea It was very windy There, which is about 12 to 15 knots. Theseawaterwasalso super cold I was so scared that I couldn’t evensitinalltheway. ButIstillmovedon andtriedmybest Afterall, itwasnotthat bad.

MyworstexperienceinsailingwaswhenI capsized, and I was stuck under the Optimist boat. That time, I hadn’t understoodhowtouprightmyboat, andI was all alone I felt really scared I started panicking Luckily, my coach came just in time. Ifeltreallyanxiousatthatmoment. It wastheworstandmostdangeroussailing experience, and I don’t want it to happen again

Coach Xu Xiaodong has long been a driving force at SAFYC, mentoring young sailors and guiding highperformance squads alike. We spoke with him about his journey, coaching philosophy, and life on the water.

Coaching is more than a job for me it is my duty and my passion. I am deeply grate trust and support the SAF community has shown me, and I look forward to continued hard work together on the water.

1.Whataspectofyourroledoyouenjoythemost?

Beyond teaching sailing skills and tactics, my true goal is to instil a love for the sport in our young athletes. I want to help them build strong moral character, resilience, and an unwavering will to succeed. My mission is to show them that they can find genuine joy, even in the most challenging training environments

2.Whatdoesadayinyourworklooklike?

My day is structured around precision and safety It begins with assessing weather and sea conditions to tailor my training plans. Before hitting the water, I brief the sailors on safety and objectives. During sessions, I focus on observation identifying individual challenges and providing immediate, constructive feedback. After training, we debrief to highlight strengths and lessons learned. Once I head home, I record the day's progress, focusing on how to better support each athlete during our next session

3.Ifyouhadasuperpower,whatwouldyouwantthattobe?

I would love the ability to instantly unlock the hidden potential in every competitor, especially those who are less confident. I want to be able to show them their own strengths so clearly that they feel empowered to train harder and pursue their goals with absolute conviction

4.Whatkindofhobbiesandinterestsdoyouhaveoutsideofwork?

I used to like traveling, swimming, table tennis and tennis Now it's mainly walking and gym fitness I also watch a travel programme on TV

5.Tellussomethingaboutyouthatmostpeopledon’tknow.

Most people see me as a coach who is always training or planning. What they don’t know is that I am a meticulous archivist. I have kept records of my entire career spanning 38 years across China, Hong Kong, and Singapore including training diaries, greeting cards, and historical competition results, such as my time coaching the Optimist national team back in 2003.

6.What’syourbiggestachievementsofarinlife?

I have been fortunate to coach national teams in China, Hong Kong, and Singapore, experiencing many podium finishes Recently, being celebrated for 20 years of coaching at SHPS was truly unforgettable. However, my greatest pride lies in taking young, unconfident athletes and helping them transform into capable, resilient sailors. Seeing them refuse to give up and eventually achieve their personal best is a source of immense happiness for me.
