Commodore’s Message I hope you and your families had a great Christmas and New Year celebrations and would like to wish everyone a prosperous 2022. There were a number of highlights in the last few months of 2021 as we held our Annual General Meeting 2021 to update members of the Club operations and address the concerns that were sent to us prior to the meeting. I would like to welcome our new Management Committee members on-board. Do not hesitate to approach any of our committee members when you see them around the Club for a small chat or to convey your concerns. We have also embarked on the final phase of our redevelopment works – the Marina expansion has commenced in October 2021 and will be completed by the first quarter of 2022. The final Bi-Monthly Trophy Race for 2021 was held on 27 November 2021 and had 9 boats racing for the top spot. Congratulations to the overall winner, Innis Free. Our young sailors had their own fun before the end of the year with the 44th Singapore Laser Open Regatta held on 04-05 December 2021. A well-deserved Bravo Zulu for the great performance of the sailors in the regatta. Our Lazarus Ballroom is in-demand with wedding bookings almost every weekend. The Wedding Fair held on 21 November 2021 opened our ballroom doors to couples that are planning their futures and looking for the perfect venue to host their loved ones in. If you are looking for a venue to host your upcoming nuptials or any corporate bookings, our Club offer different venues aside from the ballroom to suit your needs. As a Club with a great number of members in the boating community and is geared towards the nurturing of future sailors of our nation, we took the initiative to assess the powerboating and seasports courses that we offer. We partnered with our tenant Kairos, to introduce a complementary immersion course for new PPCDL holders and people who want to brush up on their boating skills. More information about the course can be found on our website. We also reviewed our seasports courses and determined that a change of fees is necessary. A more in-depth explanation for this can be found on page 09.

Moving on to the upcoming activities for the first quarter of 2022, we have the first race of the Bi-Monthly Trophy Race 2022 series on 08 January 2022 followed by the annual Horsburgh Regatta on 12 and 13 February 2022 in partnership with Changi Sailing Club. We are definitely starting the year right with a lot of time out at sea with our sailing friends. We are also increasing our efforts to conduct events virtually. Announcements of such events can be found on our social media platforms and newsletters, so make sure you follow us online and update your email addresses to receive news and updates. The past year was definitely a year to remember. Thank you for your unwavering support and our shared goal of taking the Club to greater heights. Annual General Meeting 2021 Our Annual General Meeting 2021 took place on 13 November at our Lazarus Ballroom. Members were given the choice to attend the meeting via Zoom or in person. The registration for the physical attendees started at 14:45hrs. The meeting started at 15:30hrs. Updates of the Club’s operations for the past year was presented. Our Honorary Treasurer gave a positive update with regards to our financial status. This is in part of having a healthy uptake of membership in line with the opening of the new facilities last year. The Club will also continue to expand our revenue streams with our member’s interests in mind. Our Rear Commodore who is part of the Redevelopment Committee was pleased to inform the attendees that the extension of our existing wet berth will be completed by the first quarter of 2022. This is good news for our boaters as the extension will allow bigger boats to park at our marina. A recap of the past events was also presented by our Vice Commodore with an invitation for members to continuously support the initiatives of the Club to engage everyone for a great time at the Club. After the Club updates were presented, the committee moved on to address the matters that members sent to be discussed in the meeting.

GM responded to the issues raised by members and thanked them for reaching out to the management with their concerns for it to be properly addressed. GM ensured that any feedback and support is welcome for the betterment of the Club.

Participants who attended physically was given the chance to voice out their concerns and suggestions too. No poll was conducted for the nomination of the members of Management Committee as the candidates are exact with the positions open. The meeting was concluded with Commodore thanking all members for their continued support and encouraged members to continuously provide feedback to the management. Thank you to all members who joined us in the meeting. Our communication channels are open for everyone's inputs and suggestions. Wedding Fair

Planning for your happily ever after requires a great eye for detail and a team of trusted vendors. From wedding rings to photographers and henna artists, the Wedding Fair in partnership with Whitevellum brought all vendors under one roof! Couples got the chance to discover friendly and accommodating partners for their upcoming nuptials. We featured an amazing selection of wedding professionals ready to help find the perfect gown, invitations, photographer, music, menu, photoshoot destinations, and much more! Wedding suppliers offered their latest promos, discounts, freebies, special offers, and ideas for brides and grooms looking for the best deals and wedding inspirations for their big day.

The Wedding Fair also gave the vendors a chance to feature their upcoming packages for 2022 bookings. With the flexibility to create their unique dream wedding, our own venue - Lazarus Ballroom, is a blank canvas simply waiting to be customised! Inspiration is endless with the extensive portfolio that our vendors presented in their booths. Sample of past works were

a testament to their professionalism and their dedication to their crafts. Not only was the Wedding Fair the perfect platform for creative couples to gain inspiration, it was also a fun way to expand their ideas and discover what they truly like. While social media and wedding blogs can help couples with their wedding planning, meeting a vendor in person at a wellorganised wedding fair delivers more credit when they choose them. They get to know more about who the vendors are, what they do, how they are organised when they talk to them and it also brings more trust between the parties. Entry to the fair was free of charge and only for couples who RSVP'd in advance. Safety measures were in place to ensure that the ballroom was a safe common space for attendees and vendors alike. A big thank you to Whitevellum for partnering with us and see you all at our next Wedding Fair!

Revision of Course Fees Thank you for your support and participation in our sea sports courses! We hope you have enjoyed and advanced yourself through the activities designed in the programme. For those who have not had the opportunity, we have a variety of courses and encourage you to experience it. With the sea sports course fee for members last reviewed as far back as 2013, the Club has done a recent study to keep up with the current market rates and increased operational costs. The Management Committee has taken the utmost care to ensure that this adjustment is the minimum needed after developing a comprehensive set of financial and market comparison reports. Hence, the review was concluded with required adjustments to the course fees and charter rates for April 2022

Bi-Monthly Trophy Race The last race for our Bi-Monthly Trophy Race 2021 series was held on 27 November 2021 and 9 boats participated. The weather and winds were in our favor when we started the race on time. It was a clear start and skippers maneuvered their own boats expertly to gain advantage over the others. After rounding the first mark, everyone's spinnaker came out to play! It was a great display of teamplay with the crews of each boat scrambling to fly their spinnakers gracefully. It was a good race for the final hurrah for the end of the series. Familiar face as well as newcomers were present and sailing their hearts out. The race is more than just competitive sailing, we also aim to harness a sense of community and we allow all ages to participate too. With this year round race, whether you are joining for competitive racing or social sailing, you can surely immerse yourself in both! If you wish to help with these type of events rather than sail, then volunteering is open to all members regardless of your skill level too! Awards and our down-downs tradition was not possible this time round to prevent the formation of a crowd in our member's lounge. Let's hope for a more relaxed situation next year! Bi-Monthly Trophy Race Dates for 2022 The race is also open for all members of local sailing cubs. If you have a sailing kaki from other Clubs, we are more than happy to include them in our friendly race. All shapes and sizes of keelboats are welcome too! We aim to keep the fun spirit of the regatta alive and we encourage participants from nervous first time “racers” as well as perhaps the more seasoned skippers. This can be your training ground too if you are interested to be a crew in the

upcoming Horsburgh Regatta 2022. If you are interested in getting out on the water on the weekends, join our races and make new friends too! Get-Kids-Afloat Course We had 5 weeks of non-stop GetKids-Afloat courses before the end of the year! We were definitely more than happy to share our passion for sailing with the younger generation of sailors coming our way. The first day of the course introduced them to the parts of the boat and the common sailing terms they need to keep in mind. We also have a simulator on land to help them be familiar with the actual parts of the boat prior to getting in the water. This builds their confidence out on the sea leading to more independent sailing sessions. We also have a few

man overboard exercise to ensure that the kids have knowledge in and confidence in climbing back on board after falling into the water. Kids love to feel grown-up and doing things on their own and being part of what’s going on. If you give them the opportunity to take charge of their own boats, they will surely step up. On top of it, it’s a fantastic way to build some great memories! With our Get-Kids-Afloat course, kids can sail out at sea and have fun in a safe and nurturing sailing environment!

44th Singapore Laser Open Regatta

Great winds and competitive sailors made our 44th Singapore Laser Open 2021 on 04-05 December 2021 more exciting! Fleets that participated were the ICLA 4, ICLA 6 and ICLA 7. This was a national ranking regatta hence the sailors were all pumped to do their best and get the top spot for the fleets that they belong to. The Laser sailing community is once again coming back together on the water for this long-standing

traditional regatta hosted by SAF Yacht Club. The first day of the race proved to be somewhat more challenging for everyone. Dramatic changes in wind velocity and direction surprised everyone and it was a total game changer throughout the day. Sunday began with moderate wind and nearly flat conditions, but the breeze gradually became stronger throughout the day. The race committee did a great job responding

to the shifting conditions. Several boats fought hard to gain ground, some eventually capsized. It was amazing how the sailors expertly managed to get back in the race after taking a tumble. Training hard definitely pays off! There was no awarding ceremony for the winners to prevent crowds/ gatherings. Complete final results can be found on our website!

Age: 8 School: Haig Girls’ School Hobbies: Gymnastics, swimming and drumming Favourite Food: Steak and pork belly Words For a Fellow Sailor: You will encounter strong winds and big waves but do not let fear stop you. Just focus to continue to sail the course. Sailing Honours: • NIL. Just completed OptiRacer How did your sailing journey come about? My sailing journey started by watching my older brother sail. My interest grew. I eventually asked my mum if I could learn to sail too. However, I was a bit nervous but what kept me going was that I had friends to start the journey with me. What’s your favourite aspect of sailing? I love feeling the wind. It makes me feel alive! What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club? I like the coaches. Coach Low was super kind and encouraging. Coach Murphy challenged me to be better.

Could you share your most memorable sailing experience? My most memorable experience was getting first place in a race that had many better sailors who were from higher squad levels. The wind shifted many times but I was in the best position to round the windward mark. It could have been just luck but it gave me a taste of winning! What about your worst experience in sailing? The worst sailing experience I faced was when I was caught in a storm. Coach Low’s boat engine broke down. He started drifting away while I continued to sail the course. When the storm came in, I did not know what to do but I continued sailing. The winds had picked up significantly. I had difficulty sheeting in the sail and I struggled with the rudder. Uncle Sudin yelled at me to return to shore which I did but it was extremely scary. Fortunately, I did not capsize but it was a frightening experience that I would never forget. However, the experience has made me a more confident and a better sailor today. Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they? I do artistic gymnastics weekly. I’m

at the beginner development level currently. My favourite is the bars. I swim laps casually too. How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies? I try to maintain discipline by finishing my homework the moment I get home from school. If I am sailing on that particular day, I will do my homework the moment I get home from sailing. It is about maintaining consistency in my studies so that I do not fall behind. For you, what makes a good sailor? A good sailor is always trying his or her best and never giving up. What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? I aim to get into the National Squad. I want to sail internationally as well. Any regattas you are looking forward to this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition? Because of Covid, I am unable to sail in a regatta. I am quite nervous about my first regatta. I plan on preparing by setting my goals, training consistently, ensuring that I have all the necessary equipment ready, sleeping early, and staying focused and positive.

I often used to cycle at ECP with my dad and I saw the sail boats. I also love the water and I asked my dad to sign me up. I started at NSC and I liked it straight away. I completed Opti Racer there.

What’s your favourite aspect of sailing?

Just being out in the sea by myself in a boat and feeling the wind is delighting. Also I love the independence and the camaraderie with my co-sailors. I feel so blessed to have an opportunity to pursue sailing at such a young age.

What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?

Its been a great journey so far. All my regattas so far have been with SAFYC. I have had a very good coach who has been kind and professional. I gained confidence to sail and race a laser by

myself at SAFYC. I am able to charter a good quality boat and am part of a motivated bunch of sailors.

Could you share your most memorable sailing experience?

It was when I won the 1st prize for the Novice category at the Changi Sailing Club Regatta. It was my first race and I won a medal which was unexpected and a surprise. I was so proud of myself and it encouraged me to continue sailing.

What about your worst experience in sailing?

On my first day at SAFYC, I didn’t know anyone and I had to launch all by myself. I got lost for a few minutes and I was almost in tears. With some luck I spotted my coach and managed to sail towards the group. It was a huge relief.

Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they?

Apart from sailing, I like to ride my bicycle with my dad. I also love to swim and is something I enjoy with my friends. I like the outdoors and enjoy holidays where there is beautiful nature. The only competitive sport I participate in is sailing.

How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies?

The last Regatta I participated in was just before my PSLE exams, However I wanted to participate as it was my first

laser Regatta and was excited. I got up earlier than usual despite the tiring days to study. I also spent some time studying after my races in the evenings. I try and work around my sailing schedule to finish my homework and studying during the weekdays.

For you, what makes a good sailor?

For me someone who is considerate and helpful to their fellow sailors and keeps their cool under stressful conditions. Its all about having fun while racing. Its so much more than just winning.

What are your personal goals in terms of sailing?

First step is to be consistently in the top 15 in every Regatta I participate and then try and do better once I’m there. I also want to make this a lifelong sport and skill that I can continue to enjoy.

Any regattas you are looking forward to this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition?

NSC Cup II. I remind myself to brush up on the sailing rules, flags etc. I also try and work on my technique especially where I am weak. I feel more water time is everything and I wish my school had sailing as a CCA. Mentally also it can be tiring, so its always helpful to have friends taking part as well and we usually share notes during and after the race.

Navy Success Story

Seeing the world with the Navy Lieutenant (LTA) Loh Chung Kit, an avid sailor since he was nine years old, has always dreamt of sailing around the world. It was therefore unsurprising that LTA Loh took the leap of faith to join the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) – a job that fulfills his dream of seeing the world and his personal aspiration of seeking a challenging and meaningful career. Having completed the Naval Junior Officers’ Course recently and equipped with the necessary navigational knowledge, LTA Loh is now serving as an Assistant Navigation Officer on board one of the warships in the RSN. Read on to find out more about LTA Loh’s journey in the RSN thus far! Why did you choose to join the RSN? LTA Loh: After graduating from Junior College, I was undecided on what I wanted to study and my career choice. A nine-to-five desk job did not excite me at all, and I knew that I wanted to do something different and meaningful. Fortunately, that opportunity came when I attended a RSN recruitment talk during my Basic Military Training in National Service. The prospects of embarking on a challenging yet meaningful career, coupled with the opportunity to “see the world” with the RSN really drew me in.

LTA Loh: Life in the RSN is really dynamic. There are days where work seems so tough and never-ending, and there are days where work comes at a slower pace. However, work has always been engaging, and with a learning mindset, I found plenty of learning opportunities everywhere. I feel that the RSN is an organisation that presents you with many chances to learn more about yourself and how you work best with the others. This also ties in with how I would describe the culture in the RSN - a family. Everyone looks out for each other and we spend a lot of time together both in and outside of work. What do in your

fulfilling work?

LTA Loh: What I find fulfilling is knowing that the work that I do, regardless of how minute it may seem, contribute to the defence of Singapore. Even in peacetime, the RSN is actively involved in defence diplomacy through participating in various overseas military exercises, thus strengthening Singapore’s defence relations with the foreign navies. Being a part of this drives my every day. What are some of your memorable experiences in the RSN so far? LTA Loh: My most memorable experience was being a part of the RSN50 celebrations in Changi

Naval Base. I was appointed as the Officer-in-Attendance for the then Chief of Defence Force. Together with a group of other junior officers, we were in charge of ensuring that the program ran smoothly and that all the VIPs enjoyed the event. That experience showed me that life in the RSN is indeed more than just sailing on board warships. Another memorable experience is the Midshipmen Sea Training Deployment that I went through during my first year of service with the RSN. That was my very first overseas deployment and we had the opportunity to sail to ports in India, Indonesia and Thailand. I go over to NSRCC side once in a while to also give a helping hand to the other seasports staff stationed there.

Coaching young sailors definitely brings me joy as I see our future sailors in them. Parents seeing their child sailing out in the open brings me immense joy too as I know they are proud of their kids and I, in part, have done my best in guiding them. I also enjoy the teamwork that our department has and I do not only have colleagues but friends among them.

Any memorable experiences from your Seasports work?

Meet the man behind our awesome sailing scene, Uncle Mazelan our Senior Seasports Assistant! How long have you been working for SAFYC? I joined the Club in back in January 2016. I joined the Sembawang side and have been stationed here since then. It was a 4-man team back then with Wee Chin as the Seasports Manager. I have stayed with the Sembawang team even though we had Changi clubhouse back then. What is your role in the Seasports operations of the Club? I am a Senior Seasports Assistant and I help in coaching, maintenance of the boats we use for the courses

A memorable experience for me was when Wee Chin (Seasports Manager at that time), Iggy, Hadi and I sailed the SB20 boats to deliver it to a charterer at One15 Marina. We sailed out from Sembawang from morning and we reached Sentosa quite late in the afternoon. Even though it was an exhausting journey, it was memorable as I got to sail with the team and polish my sailing skills after a long time. What’s the most exciting part of your job? One of the most exciting part of my job is when I get to rescue sailors who are stuck or stranded at sea during storms. It is challenging too but after successfully helping sailors, the exciting feeling of accomplishment is immense. I remember rescuing 3 sailors who veered off to Malaysian waters during a storm and I teamed up with Andy

What is your favorite part of working at the Club?

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working? Do you have any hobbies? I enjoy exercising near the park at my house. I enjoy moving and keeping myself fit as it is also helps in my job when lifting heavy sails and doing boat maintenance works. I feel better when I get to stretch and workout. Where would you like to go on a dream destination? Once we are allowed to travel freely and the threat of COVID19 is behind us, I would like to travel to Saudi Arabia and visit Mecca with my wife. What’s your favorite place of all the places you’ve traveled? My favorite place will always be where my family is, and that is Malaysia. I remember the good times when I got to visit them in Malacca and spend a week with my family. We went to various places and traveled to KL and enjoyed out time together. Use 3 words to describe yourself for people who do not know a thing about you? I would describe myself as quiet but very approachable, disciplined when it comes to coaching and most of all, easy-going and funny when I want to be.
