18th SAFYC Regatta (Dinghy) The 18th edition of our SAFYC Regatta held last 02-03 April saw 77 dinghy sailors competing for the top spots of three dinghy classes namely, ILCA 7, ILCA 6 and ILCA 4.
day by a bit more wind, and notably choppier waters built by the all night rain and wind. Such drastic changes in conditions forced sailors to adapt, mentally and tactically.
On-site check-out started as early as 9am at our Race Secretariat in the zones assigned to different fleets. The first day of the race had light rain shower and shifty winds. Sailors and Race Committee on shore were waiting for the perfect condition to launch the boats out to sea and start the race. Lunch time came and went but there was still no sign of winds suitable for racing.
Sailors were also sent back to shore after the Race Committee decided to delay the start due to impending bad weather. Thankfully the grey clouds dispersed and the sailors were called back to the race course and racing commenced shortly after. With the increased breeze, the Race
Committee saw sailors fully hiking and embracing the splash! The race itself can be challenging due to somewhat unpredictable weather conditions - it can be very light, at the same time it can get a bit sporty throughout the course. Rounding the mark is very critical for the sailors and can make or break the race. The sailor's decision-making skills and instinct developed during training is key to outsmart their competitors.
The first race only started at 1pm when the wind conditions were better and more worthy for racing. The ILCA 6 class & ILCA 7 class got their first warning signals followed by the ILCA 4 class. Everyone was eager to sail to make the most out of the available wind and get good head start for the first race. The conditions for the final day of the race was better. After a slow day of racing on the waters the day before, sailors were welcomed on the second

Congratulations to Lee Wonn Kye for winning the overall title for ICLA 7 class, Jania Ang for ILCA 6 and Isaac Goh for ICLA 4. Glad to see you all back in the water!

18th SAFYC Regatta (Optimist)
Crowded starting line of eager sailors for our 18th SAFYC Regatta Optimist Class. Race Committee making sure no one is over the line.
Nervous and excited sailors alike flocked to our 18th SAFYC Regatta Optimist on 09-10 April. A total of 161 sailors from different clubs and organizations participated in the regatta. Everyone was eager to win for they have practice on a regular basis and put a lot of effort into their boat preparation with the help of their parents. Some sailors were sporting new sails too! The Gold and Silver fleet were raceready even before the anticipated warning signal timing however, we all know one thing about the sport of sailing — we can’t always predict the wind. Wind conditions during the race were mostly unpredictable. Cloudy yet suddenly sunny day and relatively smooth seas were experienced by the sailors. The overall wind conditions was slow to build for both days.

The mood onshore was casual and light-hearted, but sailors (and their parents) got serious as soon as the race commenced and the intensity escalates until the last boat crosses the line! Parents were armed with snacks, drinks and their trusty binoculars to see their kids in action! For the first race, rounding the first mark and heading down to the second mark proved to be a challenging leg of the race as the wind slowed down and gave sailors not much push to

SEASPORTS maneuver their boats around the mark. For the more experienced sailors, this was just another day of sailing but for others, the challenges of mild winds was testing experience on its own. The second day was sunnier and the sailors were anxious to catch up and improve their scoreboard standing from the previous day. The last day of the regatta rewarded sailors who showed consistency, patience, and endurance.

Besides the obvious goal of the sailors who joined our 18th SAFYC Regatta - to win, the regatta has always been about fostering the sport of sailing and getting young sailors on the water. Bravo Zulu to the Gold fleet overall winner Amos Tham and Silver fleet overall winner Tong Xuan Ya! Let

CAPDEV Cohesion Event In-person teambuilding events and cohesions are now back and we are happy to welcome groups of all sizes to hold their events at the Club! Our packages for team building activities provides great opportunity for teams to come together and get better at communication, sharing ideas, leadership, trust and unity!

The most recent one held at the Club is the CAPDEV Cohesion Event on 29 April 2022. Our friends from the Republic of Singapore Navy enjoyed their cohesion activities such as our classic rafting challenge, exciting banana boat and ski tubes as well as our easy archery station. They also had fun aiming to dunk their mates in the water at our dunk tank station! A whole lot of sunshine, fresh air and a serious amount of fun was present throughout the day. This in turn, brought out great level of energy and enthusiasm from our participants. The teams that earned the highest point was declared the winning team and got a surprise gift!

MICRON Teambuilding Event Teamwork plays a crucial role in any organization both big or small. When employees with common interests, goals, ambitions, and attitudes come together, a team is formed. This team then strives to put in the best effort to solve problems. With the recently concluded team building event of our guest company, MICRON, we can definitely say that they are now closer than ever!
Teams are trying to figure out the best way to create their own rafts with the limited items provided to them.
Indoor Archery, Rafting and our crowd-favourite Banana Boat and Dunk Tank were some of the activities that we conducted for MICRON. These definitely sparked their team spirit and encouraged competition in a fun, relaxed environment. All of our team building activities and are unique events, as we tailor each and every experience to individual clients. Even if two companies choose the same games and activities, their individual needs will differ. We always take this into account and will work with you to create a team building experience that’s perfect for you!
Creativity and teamwork is tested with our Rafting activity as teams scramble to design and construct their rafts for racing!

Bi-Monthly Trophy Race (May)

The third race for our Bi-Monthly Trophy Race 2022 series was held on 07 May and 8 boats participated. It was a clean start with no boats over the line. Everyone raced well despite the intermittent rain and shifty winds. Skippers and their crews braved through the cold and wet weather from start to finish. Congratulations to Scarlett O'Hara for taking the top spot for this round!

The day ended with shared food and drinks at our Poolside Lounge. Downdowns were given to newcomers as well as for skippers who did doubtful and funny maneuvers during the race! A big thank you goes out to our Captain of Sail Mr. Ken Yap, who provided us drinks for this session! See you all in our next BTR in July!

Promising Sailor Jaye Low Xi En the lounge area, after school training I will mingle around with my friends. Could you share your most memorable sailing experience? When I started sailing in Changi, I was stuck in a storm, I didn’t know what to do and I saw some sailors sailed to the nearby beach. My father was at the beach and told me he couldn’t carry the boat all the way back to the ramp. He asked me to sail back myself and don’t give up. After I reached the ramp, I was overjoyed that I made it back. What about your worst experience in sailing? After I performed a capsize drill, there was a huge fish that appeared in my boat, I was petrified as I did not know what to do. I hurried my coach over to help me release the fish. Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they? Yes. Running. How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies? I would often do my homework before I go for my training as when I come back home from training I will be very lethargic. For you, what makes a good sailor? I feel that having determination and being resilient would make a good sailor. Age: 9 School: Endeavour Primary School Hobbies: Singing, Running, Sailing Favourite Food: Udon, Kway Teow Soup, Hor Fun
How did your sailing journey come about? I grew up seeing my elder sister and brother sailing, I also want to be like them :)
What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? I want to push myself forward to be a better sailor and to get the top few in silver fleet.

What’s your favourite aspect of sailing? My favourite part of sailing is during strong wind. I like the feeling that I am able to control the boat during strong wind.
Any regattas you are looking forward to this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition? Raffles Marina Optimist Regatta and Singapore National Sailing Championships. I will prepare by giving myself more water time and to learn as much as possible from my coach.

My sailing journey came about when my parents brought me to Changi Sailing Club to enroll in opti junior as they thought some fresh air would be good for me. My parents and my sister also took up sailing at the same time.
What’s your favourite aspect of sailing?
I love feeling the wind in my hair, the waves crashing against my boat, and the taste of sea spray on my tongue.
What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?
I think it is a wonderful experience, from being in C squad, where it is very relaxed, and then to B squad, which is tougher (especially the promotion test). It has also been great training in both Sembawang, and now at NSRCC in East Coast.
Could you share your most memorable sailing experience?
My most memorable sailing experience was in B squad, when a storm hit us during training. Although most of the squad sailed back to shore, I, together with four other teammates, challenged ourselves by sailing in the storm and the challenging conditions.
What about your worst experience in sailing?
My worst experience in sailing would probably be the training session when there was zero wind, and the current was super strong, and in the end everyone had to be towed back to shore.
Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they?
Yes. They are skiing, wakeboarding, and wake surfing.
How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies?
We sail either in the morning or afternoon on the weekends, and we make sure we study hard during the time that we’re not sailing.
For you, what makes a good sailor?
For me, a good sailor is one with determination, perseverance, focus and love for the sport.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working? I enjoy my off days by watching different shows and drinking. I enjoy watching shows to pass time and chill out after work. What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work? Meet Lin Feng - our Senior Clubhouse Maintenance Assistant! How long have you been working for SAFYC? I have been a part of the Club for 15 years now. I joined back in 2007 and have enjoyed my work and stayed since then. Time does fly fast as I did not also realize I have been part of SAFYC for 15 years! What is your role in the Operations department of the Club? I support the Club by doing maintenance work all around. I ensure that the members enjoy the facilities better by making sure repair works are done when needed. I also perform routine checks and assist
I am fond of reading as well as going out to shop. Both activities relaxes me and takes my mind off of work. This is my way of out-winding after a hectic day of work or during weekends when I am not on duty. What’s something you want to do/ explore this year that you’ve never done before? For this year, I would plan to try and apply for a Permanent Residency here in Singapore. Do you plan to travel anytime soon? I would love to travel again but not anytime soon. I still do want to travel when it is more safer and more convenient.
Where would you want to go for a dream vacation? Japan is where I would like to go. I'd like to explore it and try out their delectable food and immerse myself in their unique culture. It will be a good starting point to start travelling too as Japan is know to be quite safe and kind with travelers from other countries. Use 3 words to describe yourself for people who do not know a thing about you :) Cheerful, confident and helpful!

New Reciprocal Club Darwin Sailing Club
Introducing our new Reciprocal Club, Darwin Sailing Club. Located at Australia, the Club was formed March 1963 with the aim "to promote and encourage the building, sailing and racing of all types of sailing craft in Darwin and surrounding waters.". From these humble beginnings, the DSC has grown and grown to become one of the busiest, 7 days per week community sporting and hospitality operations in the Northern Territory.
