17th Horsburgh Challenge (Southern Route) Our yearly rendezvous for seasoned and new sailors alike, the 17th Horsburgh Challenge (Southern Route) on 12 & 13 February 2022, didn't disappoint! Two days of clear blue skies and constant but patchy breeze gave competitors a good challenge for all 4 races completed over the weekend. The Horsburgh leg did not materialise for the second year running as it was adjusted in view of both the COVID-19 situation and general safety considerations. The first day was the classic long passage race, which sent the sailors cruising along the Southern Route with scenic views of the East Coast shoreline for a change. Interestingly, the Organisation Committee also had to take into consideration the restrictions as the regatta coincided with the rehearsals for Singapore Air Show 2022, but this gave our sailors the best seats in the audience to watch the fighter jets and RSAF pilots do their thing. After a slight delay, the AP flag was dropped and we had a clear start at

0721hrs and a beautiful sunrise lighting up the horizon, giving our sailors plenty of light to navigate their first race. By noon, the biggest and fastest boat of the fleet, Mystic River helmed by Pang Kim Ann was already close to the midway point at Approach buoy while the smaller boats were doing their best to keep up and catch up. On the back-end, the organising team was deliberating on whether to shorten the course whist taking into consideration the strong currents, on and off breeze and the varying PY ratings. As the breeze picked up, the final decision was to let the boats go all out and to maintain the finishing line at Changi Sailing Club. Mystic River was the first to cross the finishing line at 1447hrs, taking line honours and first place after corrected timing for their stellar performance. In
SEASPORTS second place, Spellbound skippered by Raymond Sng crossed the finishing line close to two hours behind Mystic River. Millennium 2, helmed by our very own Sailing Chairman, Ken Yap literally edged in for 3rd place, just making the 10hour cut-off for the passage and finished at 1715hrs. Unfortunately for the rest, despite their fervor efforts, they scored DNF for the long passage, and Rumbottle, helmed by Kuah En Shyang, ever the wise one decidedly chose to retire from the race mid-way when they did their math and realised they were not going to make the cut-off.

Overnight, the Organisation Committee received news that Spellbound was retiring from the regatta due to an engine malfunction, which meant that the fleet had one less competitor on the start line. Nevertheless, Day 2 started on time with the first warning signal going off at 1000hrs. Course flag numeral pennant 6 over green, sent the 5-boat fleet around Pulau Ubin in clockwise direction and the time limit set was 210minutes. Mystic River, having shown their dominance in Day 1 continued their strong showing by finishing at 1230hrs, and the rest of the fleet scored DNF.

The second race of the day was a short and sweet windward-leeward from Changi Sailing Club to Changi Buoy and back. This gave the smaller boats an edge over Mystic River as Millennium 2 sailed their A-game and beat Mystic River by 11 seconds after corrected time! Innisfree helmed by Alfred Leung finished in third place
The last race of the day was a sail up to Tekong Buoy and back, with the starting signal going off at 1449hrs, just in time to adhere to SI 5.3 which states "No warning signal will be made after 1500hrs”. Mystic River once again dominated the race and secured the top spot, Millennium 2 crossed the finish line with Innisfree and Piccanini not too far behind. After the tabulation of handicaps, Piccanini skippered by Damien Chng came in second place, beating Millennium 2 by over a minute. The overall results after 4 races with 1 discard saw Mystic River in first place, Millennium 2 in second place and Piccanini in third – proving that tenacity will surely pay off!

Horsburgh Challenge Winner Interview Overall Winner of 17th Horsburgh Challenge (Southern Route) Skipper Name: Pang Kim Ann Name of boat: Mystic River How long have you been sailing? About 20 years. More often in the last 6 years since I bought Mystic River. Can you tell us more about your crew and how did you determine who will be part of your crew for the Horsburgh Challenge? This group has been my regular crew for regattas in last 6 years. Thus they are quite familiar with the boat. Due to Covid limiting to 5 pax, we are a bit short handed, especially when trying to fly the Genaker. Ideally we will need 6 to 8 crew for regattas. But sometimes we were unable to have sufficient crew, even prior to Covid. How many times you and your crew joined the Horsburgh Challenge in the past few years? This is the 2nd Horsburgh that Mystic River participated. The 1st was in 2017 when we actually raced to Horsburgh. Prior to that I personally did another Horsburgh race with another boat. Only 2 of this crew did the 2017 Horsburgh race.

What did you and your team do to prepare for the Horsburgh Challenge? No training and not much preparation other than ensuring boat is in good condition and well stocked with BEER. Did cleaned the hull during delivery, the day before the race. Any interesting or challenging experience that happened during any of the races? On the 2nd day, after the 1st race, our radio was accidentally switched off and we missed the warning signal and countdown to start. We only realized the start after seeing other boats moving towards the start line. Any words of encouragement for people who want to try their hand at sailing? Any keen sailor, willing to work and learn the ropes are welcomed to join us. I think many of the boats are short of crew too. I am sure they will also welcome anyone who wish to try their hand sailing. So approach us if interested!

Bi-Monthly Trophy Race (January)
The first weekend of our Bi-Monthly Trophy Race was a great start for this year's series! 9 boats participated and did their best to outmaneuver each other on the water! Fantastic sailing from the sailors who were eager to establish their position on the scoreboard. Piccanini clinched the 1st place followed by Innis Free for 2nd place and Scarlett O'Hara bagging up the 3rd place. A great show of sportsmanship was also seen last Saturday with sailors owning up to their mistake and graciously accepting the penalty. Bravo Zulu everyone and we look forward to our upcoming races yearround!

Bi-Monthly Trophy Race (March)
Sailors are stepping up their sailing game in the March edition of our Bi-Monthly Trophy Race! The winds were in our favor as a total of two races were conducted within the day. Innis Free is definitely targeting another first-place title this year as they claim the top spot in the series followed by Piccanini for 2nd place and Scarlett O'Hara not far along in the 3rd place. We also did a small prize giving session before the start of the race to give our last year's winners their hard-earned trophies. Our Captain of Sail, Ken Yap, presented the winners their trophies and received one for him and his crew too as the 2nd place winner! Congratulations to Innis Free for winning 1st place and to Scarlett O'Hara at 3rd place. Sailors managed to evade a round of down-downs this time but make no mistake as we are keeping a record for the future! See you all in May for the next race!

Get-Kids-Afloat Course Our Get-Kids-Afloat Course gained new fans of sailing over the March school holidays! This batch of GKA participants learned teamwork, planning and responsibility in an exciting and challenging atmosphere while at the same time discovering one of the world’s oldest and most rewarding sports! Our curriculum was developed by our coaches with three things in mind – learning, fun and safety. All these three combined, kids will surely love the sport and get more interested in upgrading their sailing skills! If you are keen to sign-up your kids, feel free to contact us and we'll get you on board. See you on the water!

Get-Kids-Afloat (GKA) Course Our introductory sailing course for children and youth between ages 7 to 15. This course includes theory and practical lessons related to the rigging of crafts, parts of a craft, points of sail, capsize drill, and more. B Squad Training Upon completion of two terms of B Squad, sailors will be able to sail safely under minimal supervision and would be race ready. They will also learn to read wind conditions and how to take advantage of wind shifts. Sailor gets Opti-Racer Certification awarded by Singapore Sailing Federation. Conducted at SAFYC Sembawang

Optimist HP Squad Sailors performing well and who progress in the national rankings to Gold fleet will be promoted to our High Performance Squad. This squad trains young sailors to compete and excel at international level regattas.
Sailors will learn sailing rules and hone their boat handling skills throughout 12 lessons held on weekends. They can also participate in sailing activities and simple sailing drills and exercises under close supervision.
Sailors will acquire advanced skills in Optimist sailing and will sail effectively under different sailing condition and situations. They will begin training at Changi where the winds are stronger and the waves are bigger. Sailor must be a Club member to join A Squad training. Conducted at SAFYC NSRCC site
National Team

The highest level of the sailing pyramid and consists of sailors who meet national selection criteria. Sailors will move to the National Team when selected by Singapore Sailing Federation. I have been sailing for six years since Primary 1 in Optimist class. I have just shifted over to Laser class a month ago.
Congratulations on progressing from Opti to Laser! What were the factors that made it possible for you to upgrade to sailing a Laser? The factors were my height and weight. I am much taller and heavier than my peers. I also figured that moving up to Laser class earlier would be advantageous in the long term to gain more experience.
What was the biggest difference you noticed when sailing the Laser compared to Opti? The boat set up and balance control is the biggest difference. Techniques need to be adapted.
Do you have any memorable sailing experience when you first tried the Laser? Yes - the first time I sailed was in January this year and I remember hiking out and going really fast! The speed on a Laser is way faster than on an Optimist. Especially with the strong winds, the first time was pretty exhilarating.
How frequent do you train now that you are part of the Laser squad? I train 4 times a week, but am trying to find time to do 5 times a week.
What are your personal goals in sailing? I hope that I can go far in sailing and be the best at the sport. I hope to win more competitions.
Any regattas you are looking forward to participating this year? How will you prepare yourself for the competition? I am looking forward to all competitions so that I can continuously improve myself. Keep training and learning from mistakes.

Staff Spotlight Meet Shaantini, our Account Assistant from Finance Department! How long have you been working for SAFYC? I am part of the Finance team for 3 years and counting. I started back in 2019. What is your role in the Finance department of the Club? I am an Account Assistant (Accounts Receivable). I mostly monitor and facilitate the recording of incoming payments and checking transactions for SOAs. I also process requests for GIRO applications and Credit Card enrollments for member's payments. I deal mostly with member's accounts. What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? Versatility of being able to do a variety of tasks. I am not confined in one task hence I can also learn a lot about new processes and procedures. This also gives me the opportunity to continuously expand my knowledge and skills to contribute to my role. Do you have a bucket list? Can you mention a few items you have done from your list? So far I don't have anything on my bucket list as I try to go with the flow and not constraint my goals to a particular list.
Any interesting facts about you e.g. what’s one thing most people don’t know about you? I'm easy going with new environment & people. I can easily adapt to different environments and different attitudes of people. This is particularly helpful since I also deal with a lot of different cases that I encounter with regards to accounts and billings. Do you have a personal mantra or a favorite quote you want to share to our readers? One of my favorite mantra goes like this "Follow your own star". All of us who follow our own star begin each day knowing we are in our own path of growth. If you understand your purpose then you can be who you truly are. And if you are somehow lost, following your own star will get you back on track. What’s something you want to do/ explore this year that you’ve never done before? I want to travel to a lot of different countries. I love exploring new places and would love to be able to travel again when I can. Hopefully this will be possible soon with the easing of travel restrictions internationally. If you were to be given a super
power of your choice, what would it be and why? If I will be given a super power, I'll choose the ability to go back in time. First I'll rectify my mistakes. Second, I'll do whatever I need for my future to turn out how I want it to be and lastly, I'll try to get back what I've lost from my mistakes . Use 3 words to describe yourself for people who do not know a thing about you? A people-person :)
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working? What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work? I love cooking, so most of the time I try to cook a variety dishes and try to explore different cuisines and recipes. I enjoy it as I can also get creative and not be restrained to a particular set of rules as there is freedom in cooking.
