KATHIE CROWLEY

Horses are remarkably honest about this distinction. In many ways, they are extraordinary lie detectors when it comes to calmness. A horse can tolerate pressure for a time. They may stand quietly, follow directions, and even appear compliant.

WHEN CALM ISN’T WHAT IT SEEMS

Yet if the nervous system underneath never truly settles, the calm eventually collapses. The horse may spook, resist, shut down, or become reactive in ways that seem to arise

rather than missing the opportunity once the pre-entries closed.

The WDAA, Western Dressage Association of America, does not limit the number of tests to 3 per day. They leave it up to the show management if they wish to do so. Often, riders enter 3-4 tests per day not necessarily considering the fatigue of the horse or themselves as riders. While Introductory Levels and Basic Levels are not as strenuous as Level 1 and higher, we should always be aware of the horse’s well-being.

TUSCOLA COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS

You stop being afraid of the reaction itself. There’s also a difference between instinct and panic. Instinct is calm and clear. It says, “This trail is too slick today,” or “My horse feels off.” Panic is loud and vague. It says, “Everything is dangerous.” “You can't do this.” Experience teaches the difference when we’re paying attention.

I Don’t Ride Without Nerves: Fear, Focus, and the Trail Between

After my fall, I didn’t try to overpower fear. I rebuilt confidence the same way I teach riders to build skill: preparation and repetition. Baby steps to being stronger than before.

My first rides back were short and deliberate. Sometimes, they were nothing more than sitting quietly in the saddle and letting my nervous system settle. Confidence isn’t bravado. It’s familiarity. The brain calms when it recognizes something as known instead of unknown.

Preparation became my antidote to uncertainty. I checked tack carefully. Carried what I might need. Let someone know my route. Practiced obstacles at home before meeting them miles from the truck. Each uneventful ride told my brain, 'You’ve handled this before and you can do it again.
