Bridging Cultures: My Experience Learning Spanish by Sabrina Mulverhill Cowling

As noted by Sabrina Mulverhill Cowling, Learning a new language is like opening a door to an entirely new world. For me, learning Spanish has been an exciting journey of discovery, patience, and connection. When I first started, even simple words felt foreign and confusing. Every phrase I learned was a small triumph, and every mistake became an opportunity to improve. I quickly realized that mastering a language is not just about memorizing vocabulary—it is about understanding culture, emotions, and ways of thinking that words alone cannot fully capture. Initially, Spanish pronunciation posed a challenge for me. Rolling the r’s, emphasizing the correct syllables, and understanding the natural flow of sentences required consistent practice. I immersed myself in music, movies, and conversations, noticing how native speakers used expressions in context. These experiences helped me internalize the language in a way that textbooks never could. The more I listened, the more natural it felt to speak, and the more I enjoyed the process of learning. As I grew more confident, I discovered that learning Spanish expanded my perspective. It allowed me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and gain insight into traditions and ideas different from my own. Everyday conversations revealed cultural subtleties and expressions that highlighted values, humor, and emotions in ways I hadn’t noticed before. Each new interaction made me more aware of the richness and depth of the language, and it motivated me to continue improving my skills.
