The Touro Synagogue is the oldest shul in America, and has a rich history of the Jewish immigrants from Amsterdam and England who settled on American soil in Newport, RI. The shul was built by a British-American architect Peter Harrison, who created a beautiful, architecturally significant building. The Chanukah Habayis was on Chanukah, 1763. During the American Revolution most of the residents fled, but R’ Isaac Touro, the Chazan of the shul, stayed to guard the shul. Throughout the British invasion, the shul turned into a hospital for the English troops After the Americans won the war, the first president of the United States, George Washington, visited Newport and the president of the Yiddishe kehilla got up and addressed Washington, pleading that the new land always defend religious freedom. Washington later wrote a letter to the Jewish community there, where he promised that the new government will give full freedom to its citizens, which later caused the First Amendment in the constitution that gives full rights for each citizen to practice his religion.
