Greetings from Gail... Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Yvette’s Accolades. Yvette Williams garden is looking a picture with flowers in bloom, and it’s great to be able to enjoy the longer evenings and warmer days. Summer is all but here. August was Wellness Month at Ryman, giving staff an opportunity to think about their health and well-being, and encouraging them to be their best at home and in the workplace. Village men enjoyed sharing Father’s Day with their family, with some enjoying traditional fish and chips. During September speaker Gillian Eadie from the Memory Foundation discussed brain research and gave tips on how to prevent memory loss in later life.
During Maori language week we learnt how to weave with flax and play stick games. Serviced apartment residents shared a meal from a hangi. Staff gave a performance, using poi the residents had made. Kristen Beardsmore spoke about life without a car, safe driving and other options including Dunedin’s great bus service. Finally, several village staff attended Safer Together, a Ryman safety expo. This was an opportunity to commit to safety. We want to ensure everyone gets home safe – every single day. Kind regards,

Celebrating 100 years and more Mary Cochrane turned 100 in September and was joined by friends and family for a cake and celebrations. Mary is one of five century-makers at the village and is the third resident here to turn 100 this year. There was a separate occasion to celebrate those at the village with 100 years or more behind them. Dunedin North MP David Clark came to visit the group, including Nance Orr, Alan Horsman, Monica Wilson, Thelma Snow and Mary. The MP presented the five with letters, and he was happy to chat to them on subjects including plans for a new Dunedin hospital. If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display. The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.

Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.
Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.
Steve came second in last year’s competition.
Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.” Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was
Village chefs serve up more than 10,000 meals a day to our residents. Chefs prepare the food fresh on-site, with three main course choices, including a vegetarian option.
myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand. myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. In 2015, Chief Operations Officer Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care
system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.
“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.” Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care. “What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible. “It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

Resident Profile
Meet Roger and Elizabeth
the French programme, and later in the Art History programme. I had really enjoyed French in high school and had a fantastic teacher who stimulated my passion. It is an important part of who I am today. Elizabeth was born in Dunedin. She experienced the same interest as I had and chose to study French, amongst other subjects, at Otago University. We met at the university and got married three years later in 1966. We then went on to have two sons whom we raised in Dunedin. We visited France frequently and had some extended periods of living there. Our two sons attended primary school in France and learnt French also.
We are happy I can be so close, and I am able to visit her several times a day.
Elizabeth was a high school teacher at several Dunedin schools but mostly at Queen's High School. She taught French and English, in between raising our children.
Hello, my name is Roger Collins, and this is Elizabeth, and between us we are serviced apartment and hospital residents.
We were also active members of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery Society. It was in 2017 that we moved to Yvette Williams.
I was born in Whangarei and moved to Timaru when I was six-years-old, I went to university in Christchurch and in France, and taught at Otago University from 1964 to 1997, first in

Health and wellbeing One focus at the village during August was on the health and wellbeing of staff. Staff joined in Triple A sessions with the residents. Maria brought her bike to work, showing off, much to the delight of residents.

Adult Colouring
Maori language
Adult colouring in is a very popular activity with many residents in the special care unit here at the village. It has been talked about as an anti-stress activity, and is relaxing and calming for those who like to take part a couple of times a week.
Maori language and culture was the subject of discussion and fun for residents during recent activities. A group including Gwen Jackson spent time making Maori poi, and then enjoyed learning poi etiquette and moves. The activities were held in Maori Language Week.

Introducing Shayna
Hello, my name is Shayna and I am a caregiver in the hospital unit. I was born in Tauranga and have three sisters. We were raised on Matakana Island in the Bay of Plenty. My Dad is a contractor who works for Google and gets to travel the world. My mum manages a winery on Matakana.
I enjoy working at Yvette Williams, where the residents and staff are great.
I went to Tauranga Girls College. Living on an island meant that I had a 5.30am start to each day to catch a boat to school. This was a 30

to 60-minute trip each way depending on weather. On many days we were lucky enough to see dolphins or whales. We later moved to the Dunedin and I finished school at Taieri College. I have also enjoyed travelling to Europe and Asia. I am getting married soon and we are going to the Cook Islands for our honeymoon. I have been a caregiver since leaving college. I enjoy working at Yvette Williams, where our residents and staff are great.
Suffrage Day tea To celebrate Suffrage Day, Age Concern and Southern District Police invited residents from the village to a morning tea. Serviced apartment residents Honor McKellar and Elizabeth Cargo were excited to be given a ride in a police car for the first time. Suffrage Day attracted events around the country,
and discussion amongst many including village staff, visitors and residents. In 1893, New Zealand became the first nation in the world to grant women the right to vote.
