Greetings from Neville... Hello, and welcome to the summer edition of Kiri’s Arias.

It’s that time of the year when gardens are looking their best and it’s no different at Kiri Te Kanawa. Our head gardener Paul Delamain and his team have been flat out with spring and summer planting, extra lawn care, pruning and preening, all in preparation for the annual Gisborne garden competition and tours. But most importantly it’s so our residents get to live in beautiful surroundings. Come and see for yourself.
You will have noticed The Nutcracker focus at the village. Ryman Healthcare is sponsoring the Royal New Zealand Ballet season of The Nutcracker, so we have supported this in the village with decorations and a scavenger hunt. On top of Oktoberfest, the Melbourne Cup and a Kiri’s Got Talent Abba revival show, it’s been a busy time at the village. Come and join the fun! regards, Kind regar

Derek Craven, a bank manager whose mum has moved to the village, talked about being ‘scam savvy’, and Alzheimer’s was another topic of discussion. It’s in the bag Reviving the days of the very popular travelling television quiz show here at the village, we featured Neville Parkinson as Selwyn Toogood and Pip Griffin as Tineke Bouchier. During the show, each resident would be called onto the stage and asked three very easy questions related to the village. If all three were answered correctly, sometimes with the help of the audience, the resident had the chance to play for “the chocolates or the bag?”. By hokey this was a fantastic event. With 15 bags and only two “booby” prizes, only one resident chose the chocolates over the bag. The “what do you think Gisborne?” question was always met with “The bag! The bag!”. If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display. The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.

Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.
Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.
Steve came second in last year’s competition.
Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.”
Village chefs serve up more than 10,000 meals a day to our residents. Chefs prepare the food fresh on-site, with three main course choices, including a vegetarian option.
Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was

It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. Meet Guy
We slept on the hard, wooden seats at the bus terminal and woke up amongst a group of Pacific Island people. One asked us if we wanted a job and a place to live. He pointed us to a place called Ponsonby where the rent was cheap. Along with the good money we earned in a shearing shed, and a roof over our heads we were off to a ‘who knows what?’ future. After years of yahooing about, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I had put on weight while doing overnight tour and shuttle work, based from the airport.
There are some good people working here from all nationalities doing wonderful work.
So after much deliberation I decided to pull up stakes and head for home. I adopted a girl who called me Dad and still does.
Hi, my name is Guy Rikki. I was born in August 1943 and was brought up in Gisborne. Our family lived in Haig Street, and along with my three brothers and two sisters I went to Te Hapara and other Gisborne schools. I was the last to leave home, choosing to head for Auckland. Along with a school friend we boarded a bus for the eight-hour drive.
Once I settled I started to walk, and also bought a ten-speed bike at a garage sale, using it five days a week. It wasn’t a fast weight loss but lose it I did. More recently I moved to Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village. There are some good people working here from all nationalities doing wonderful work to help our residents.
International showcase What a fantastic day we had at the International Cultural Showcase at Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village! The afternoon was full of colour, music and beautiful people. The residents and staff had such a great time either being part of the show or just watching it. It was lovely to see the diversity of
cultures – people from all over the world sharing a little piece of who they are. Pictured: This Filipino dance troupe is made up of Ryman employees. They performed this piece to showcase the culture of the Philippines.

Games day!
Talks on Alzheimer’s
Recently we invited residents and friends to join us for games day.
Alzheimer’s remains a key subject. Recently a crowd heard from Cheryl Morley from the Alzheimer’s Association and Jennifer Holloway from the Sherwood Club. What a great job these groups do in our community. There were tips for keeping ourselves well and “mindful”.
Events included outdoor bowls, 500, bridge, Rummikub and croquet. We have another such event planned for January, adding indoor bowls and a pool competition into the mix. Pictured: Residents concentrate at the cards table. From left: Avril Down, Jeanette Robb, Granville Jones and Margaret McKay.

Introducing Hesedel
Hello, my name is Hesedel Bayawa and I am one of the registered nurses at the village in the hospital wing. I have been working here since January 2016. I find this place very ‘homey’ amongst all the cultures.
I like to go surfing, read books, play my guitar or watch a good movie.
I was raised in the mountains of the central Philippines, in Baguio which is a very popular tourist spot. Nearby you can visit one of the world’s wonders of nature, the Banawe rice terraces. People also like to go there for food. Among the eating options

is a local pudding made from purple yam. It was popularised by nuns at a very old monastery. Local folks are known for being wood carvers making fine furniture, ornaments and art. The weather there is similar to Gisborne’s in the spring, although there are just wet and dry seasons. Here I like the weather changes, along with the friendly and welcoming people. I like to go surfing, read books, play my guitar or watch a good movie.
Inter-village challenge Bev Davy from Kiri Te Kanawa and Ginny Sherriff from Beetham Lifestyle Village organised an outdoor bowls challenge recently. Beetham offered a top notch green and their hospitality for the August event was appreciated. We reciprocated in September. Club bowlers and those less experienced joined forces, and everyone had a great time. The outings happened to be on days with perfect weather.
