Greetings from Izak... Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Jean’s Register. We have had a fantastic start to summer with fabulous activities to celebrate Father’s Day, we also held our annual Barn Dance, hosted a Zumba class at the village and invited the Harmony Choir to perform. On a more serious note, we held a fundraiser for the Kerala Floods at the village. You can read more on that below.

I am pleased to say the clinical team are mastering the new electronic system, which will reduce paperwork, so our staff can spend more time with our residents. In other news, we welcomed our new sales advisor Michelle Lord-Roper to the Jean Sandel family. Please make her feel welcome when you see her around the village.

Fashion awards
Kerala Floods Fundraiser
This year the resthome residents entered the Taranaki Fashion Art Awards. The awards are centred around wearable arts and our residents spent hours glittering face masks, cotton swabs and glows which made up the outfit – Bling Medical Supplies.
In an effort to help out those affected by the Kerala Floods, we decided to hold a fundraiser. An afternoon of bingo raised $700! We hope that this money will go a long way to help those affected.
Our village beautician, Stacy Riddick, modelled the outfit to perfection. In celebration of the event, we also invited Stacey’s son Zavier, Gemma Vincent, and Kourtney Vincent (on the cover) to the village to showcase their Knighted in Lost ‘n’ Socks costumes.

Zavier was the King, with Gemma as his Queen, and Kourtney the Pile of Socks as the Princess. The three have also managed to land a place in the finals. Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.
also pleased to go one better than last year. “We’ve got the two top positions in the country, which is a brilliant result.’’
Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.
Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.
Steve came second in last year’s competition.
Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.”
Village chefs serve up more than 10,000 meals a day to our residents. Chefs prepare the food fresh on-site, with three main course choices, including a vegetarian option.
Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was

If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful
musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display. The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. In 2015, Chief Operations Office Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care
system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.
“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.” Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care. “What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible. “It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

Resident Profile
Gwen Klenner
The farming community was very close-knit and at one of our many dances I met my future husband, Sid. We recently celebrated our 72nd wedding anniversary! My husband and I owned a farm in Omata, New Plymouth. I helped my husband with milking every morning and night. We lived in the same house for 50 years. Our children, two daughters and a son, grew up in that house on the farm so it holds many happy memories for me. However, we later decided to sell the farm, but we did keep two acres around our house. After my 90th birthday, I became really unwell and it was necessary to look to the future. Sid still lives in the house, while I moved into the resthome at Jean Sandel in 2016.
I love the village and the fact that my family can come and visit me all the time. Hello, my name is Gwen Klenner and I was born in 1926. I was brought up on a dairy farm on Hastings Road, Matapu. Matapu is in southern Taranaki and is situated between Eltham and Hawera. As a youngster I helped my parents on the farm.
Table tennis We are very competitive at Jean Sandel and recently challenged another retirement village to a game of table tennis. After a few weeks of practicing our residents were ready to defend the honour of their village. It was a fantastic day, and everyone had a great time – even though we had to keep our competitiveness in check. We are very pleased to report that we took the crown for the first round. Well done! Pictured: The competitors loved the day and had a wonderful time having a chat after the competition.
Sid comes in most days to visit and we both enjoy the activities together, which includes bingo and Happy Hour. I also enjoy Triple A, golf, Memory Lane and everything else that is on offer at the village. I love the village and the fact that my family can come and visit me all the time.
Staff Profile
Introducing Mark Congratulations Recently we celebrated with Hospital Volunteer and Friend of the village Jean Hastie who got nominated for the New Plymouth District Council’s Citizens Award. The village nominated Jean for her endless hours of voluntary work in the hospital over the past five years.
I was born in Stratford in 1956 and moved to New Plymouth three years later. After leaving school in 1973, I took a job at a bakery. I decided later that I needed a change and started working at the New Plymouth power station in 1976.
Jean not only managed to become a finalist, but she also took home the award. Congratulations Jean, we are very proud of you. Right: Jean was very honoured to receive the award.

Hello, my name is Mark McDonald and I am an activities assistant at the village.
I love the job; meeting new people and making residents laugh.
There I learned my electrical trade and started working at Copperheat in 1983. The job entailed a move to Motonui,

working offshore on oil rigs, and later a move to Australia. In the early 90s, I moved back to New Zealand to Hawkes Bay and managed an apple orchard. I also obtained a diploma in massage and worked at another resthome before I started working at Jean Sandel three years ago. I love the job; meeting new people and making residents laugh. In my free time I play indoor bowls and have won two New Zealand titles!

Upcoming events
Monocles, moustaches, and bikes descended on the village in late September as part of The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride.

The worldwide phenomenon was founded in 2012 and the charity event attracts over 110,000 participants on classic, custom-style and vintage bikes, in more than 600 cities. The original idea was to change the perception of motorbike riders, while raising money and awareness for men’s mental health programmes, suicide prevention, and prostate cancer research. After a hot cuppa and a chat with our residents, and raising money for their charities, the riders donned their helmets and waved goodbye to the residents as they headed off to their next stop.
