A note from Brian... Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Bob’s Register. With summer now upon us, we are looking forward to long, warm evenings. I am excited to share with you some of the highlights that we have enjoyed over the past few months. There have been plenty of memorable events bringing with them fun, laughter and joy. During July, we celebrated and shared the different cultures within our village community. We tasted different cuisines and learned about several languages and traditions. We have a diverse range of cultures at the village and it was fantastic to learn more about them.
In August, Wellness Month arrived, and the activities staff went above and beyond with excellent activities, which our residents loved. We are now hurtling towards Christmas, so please enjoy these wonderful few months before the holiday season descends. I hope that we will see you at our events, make sure you check the activities calendars. As always, my door is open if you have any queries. Kind regards,

Aging for Beginners During October we welcomed author Doug Wilson to the village. He shared his research on how to age well with our residents. The retired Professor of Medicine, who has held senior research roles in pharmaceuticals, has condensed his research in an easy-to-read book: Aging for Beginners. Memory Lane Our independent and serviced apartment residents had a fantastic time at our Memories with a Twist event. The afternoon started with a couple of wonderful skits from days gone by, by the residents. Next, we held a fashion parade, featuring clothing belonging to the residents going back through the decades. The audience loved the fashion parade, especially
the outfits from the 1920s, with several fantastic flapper dresses. After much fun and laughter, the residents relaxed with a delicious afternoon tea and a Pimm’s cocktail. A wonderful day spent in fabulous company. Above: A trip down memory lane for our residents in their fabulous outfits.
Spectacular concert Residents were very happy to welcome back the fabulous Rebecca Nelson for another fantastic performance in the village centre. With special anecdotes of her travels during each song, Rebecca kept her audience spellbound. The classical singer also graced everyone with a truly special rendition of Hallelujah, during which she performed a verse in Maori. Afterwards the residents gathered for an afternoon tea, and of course, they got the opportunity to speak to the singer herself.

If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display. The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.

Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.
Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.
Steve came second in last year’s competition.
Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.”
Village chefs serve up more than 10,000 meals a day to our residents. Chefs prepare the food fresh on-site, with three main course choices, including a vegetarian option.
Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was
myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand. myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. In 2015, Chief Operations Office Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care
system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.
“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.” Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care. “What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible. “It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

Resident Profile
Meet Ian
me to be a part of VSO as a volunteer and I was sent to Ethiopia. I visited many countries including Europe, Samoa, Fiji and Australia. I can also speak three languages, English, German and Ethiopian. On a trip to Addis Ababa, I met two lovely New Zealand nurses, one of whom I fell in love with. Beverly and I married in 1965 and we soon welcomed two daughters, Maria and Juanita. When Maria was two years old we decided it was time to move and New Zealand became our home. I became a police officer, but I later found my calling as a police youth officer and for nearly 20 years I worked with young adults and children. In my later years, I became an Anglican Minister and Celebrant for weddings and funerals.
I have found a whole extended family here amongst the staff and residents.
Hello, my name is Ian Snell and I live in the resthome here at Bob Owens. I was born in Nottingham, England in 1938, and I had a wonderful childhood. In 1960 I worked for Rolls Royce as an aero engineer, and they asked
Sadly my wife passed away and I decided it was time for me to look for a permanent place to settle. I moved into the resthome in 2017 and I have found a whole extended family here amongst the staff and residents. I love the village and the staff are doing a great job looking after me in my twilight years.
50s & 60s party Our 50s & 60s party went down a treat as most of our resthome residents remembered those decades fondly. The celebration brought back fun memories as the music, played by Mel Robin, spoke to the soul. Our staff dressed up in theme and everyone looked like they went back in time. Wellness month
ALOHA! Recently our special care residents enjoyed their Hawaiian Luau lunch. The unit was colourfully decorated, and the staff dressed according to theme. Thank you to our chef for preparing the delicious meal. Everyone had a great lunch!
During Wellness Month, the special care residents d and staff were challenged to, a mind bender wordfind. It was tough to find all the words required! However, the reward – a tasty chocolate – was well worth the effort.

Introducing Heather
Hello, my name is Heather Arnold and I am an administrator at Bob Owens. I am a small-town girl and was born in Taumarunui. Now, however, I have developed a love for traveling. After leaving school, I was unsure what career I wanted, so I started a role at ACC. This provided me with an introduction to the medical industry.
I love assisting a large variety of people and helping them at the front desk.
After 15 years and a move to Tauranga, I had acquired great experience in medical administration. I started working at Bob Owens in 2016.

I have always been a people person and love meeting them and listening to their stories. My job at Bob Owens is perfect in this regard as I love assisting a large variety of people and helping them at the front desk. The team here is fantastic and being one of many caring and committed staff members, makes me proud to say I work for Ryman.

The healthy lunch consisted of a range of tasty food including pumpkin soup, garlic buns, mushroom and bacon quiche and club sandwiches, followed by date and coconut slice, fresh fruit and muesli bars. Staff also had a choice of speciality coffee or sparkling apple juice.
