Dear Members,

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

James (Jim) McClymont

As I write my first report for 2026 I reflect on the events of 2025 and ponder of what lies ahead of us in 2026. The year 2025 was a successful one for both our Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club and Club Thirroul. Success is not only measured in financial terms but also in the increased visitations of members and family to their club and the positive feedback from members and guests. We have achieved excellent results in all areas.

2025 was especially rewarding for me as in November I was awarded the prestigious Jack Martin Award for services to the Leagues Clubs Australia in a ceremony hosted by Mark Levy and in the presence of Olympic legend Dawn Fraser and Leagues Clubs icon Ken Arthurson at the LCA Conference in Queensland. I was overwhelmed by the award, it being one of the proudest moments in my life and even though I was the recipient of this award it truly belongs to all in the Ryde Eastwood family.

As 2025 was coming to a close I was reflecting on the successful year we all enjoyed with all the good news stories from Ryde Eastwood Leagues and Club Thirroul. Then came the news of the Bondi tragedy on Sunday 14th December. I like so many was saddened and shocked by the senseless killing and wounding of so many innocent people. In the aftermath came the stories of courage and bravery and the demonstration of what good can come when a community works together to assist each other in times of need. This is exactly the basis of what our clubs are all about and some that assisted supporting people during the tragic event. All registered clubs have a purpose from which they were formed be it rugby league, bowls, soccer, netball, community activities etc and they all have an important role to play in theirs and other communities. This can be supporting people during fires, floods, natural disasters, etc any time people may need help. I like many others, felt helpless watching the Bondi incident but now I believe it reinforces the value of supporting communities such as ours. I attended meetings at Club Thirroul and our own internal clubs,

e.g. the Seniors Club, Social and Travel Club, Camera Club just to name a few and realised more than ever the value of our community clubs. I was reminded of the problems of isolation, loneliness, lack of purpose etc which can lead to potential mental health issues, domestic violence or other such things the modern society may deliver. The value of such clubs and their marvellous volunteers is invaluable so instead of them thanking me I thank them on behalf your club.

Rather than feeling helpless in such incidents as the one at Bondi let’s raise the bar in becoming an even more important contact and resource for our community. We have many wonderful people in our club which may be an invaluable resource for the long-term future of your club, this is the reason we exist. So, when we spend time with our family and friends, reinforce with them the value of being part of the community. This may be via a health club, a seniors or travel club. Playing bowls or even being part of a local service club. Your local club can assist from young ones in learn to swim classes, all ages all sporting clubs, health club and senior water aerobics. I am in fact waiting for a photo of a Nan and grandchildren together playing barefoot bowls at Club Thirroul.

The friendship and camaraderie enjoyed by all in our clubs is priceless. We on the Board, Management and staff are committed to raising the bar even higher in participation and assistance to our community. You in turn will be like me a very proud member of our community who will assist each other if an unexpected term of events happens around us. We are all together as one in our Ryde Eastwood family to help and enrich our communities and welcome anyone who wishes to be part of this.

Wishing everyone a safe and healthy 2026, see you in the club.

James

CEO’S REPORT

Dear Members,

A warm welcome to 2026. I hope all members enjoyed a safe, happy and fresh start to the new year. As we look ahead, there is a sense of excitement and optimism in and around the Club, and I am pleased to share what promises to be another great and rewarding year for our members and community.

It has been wonderful to see so many long-standing members alongside new faces enjoying the Club whether through our promotions, entertainment, dining experiences or simply reconnecting with family and friends. Your continued support reinforces our focus on delivering a welcoming environment and a great all-round offering for members and the wider community.

As we closed out 2025, our attention turned to planning and progressing key priorities for 2026. Our commitment remains clear: to ensure Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club continues ‘to be a place at the heart of the community for all to enjoy’. The success of our recent promotions, events and member offers reflects this focus, and it has been a pleasure to see members making the most of everything on offer.

The festive season was a particular highlight. From another fantastic Christmas Day celebration to the excitement of New Year’s Eve, the Club was alive with energy and a warm sense of welcoming all that attended. Our Christmas raffles, school holiday activities and family events were extremely well supported, creating many moments of enjoyment across generations. January also saw us celebrate Australia Day and welcome back popular raffles and promotions that members know and love.

Looking ahead, there is much to enjoy in the months to come. February will feature Lunar New Year celebrations for the Year of the Horse, along with Valentine’s Day dining offers. In March, the NRL season returns, bringing with it exciting promotions including general admission opportunities, State of Origin draws, and VIP Lounge experiences with food and beverage corporate box seating for Wests Tigers games. Easter promotions and our ever-popular

Mother’s Day Buffet Lunch and prize draws on 10 May will round out a memorable first half of the year. Live entertainment also takes centre stage, with acts including Frankie Valli, Drag Bingo, Jack Daniels Magic and Ultimate INXS—there is truly something for everyone.

2026 is also a year of significant progress for the Club and the broader community. From February, we will commence a series of renovations across key areas including the functions bar and bathrooms, gaming cashier, bar and amenities, along with other important upgrades. We appreciate your patience during this time and will work hard to minimise any disruption; confident these improvements will enhance comfort and enjoyment for all members and guests. In parallel, we continue to progress the Club’s Master Plan, with planning proposals moving forward with Council and anticipated exhibition early in the year. We look forward to gathering feedback from members and the community to ensure our future offering truly reflects your needs and expectations.

A major milestone early in 2026 will be the commencement of The Riverly development. Interest has been very strong, with just under 20 apartments sold in December alone. Sales will reopen to the wider community in February, and I encourage you to visit the sales office located at the Club on the Lower Ground to meet the team and learn more about this exciting project. Demolition will also begin in February, marking the first tangible step in bringing this long-held vision to life.

Thank you for being such a valued part of RydeEastwood Venues at Ryde and Thirroul. Your loyalty and support make everything we do possible. I look forward to welcoming you to the Club and sharing an exciting year ahead together.

Warm regards,

COMMUNITY Update

FUN RUN

Our annual Fun Run was truly a day to remember, bringing together members, families, sponsors and community partners in a celebration of fitness, fun and generosity. Bathed in sunshine and powered by incredible community spirit, the event saw participants of all ages run, walk and cheer their way through a fantastic morning for a very worthy cause.

Thanks to the overwhelming support of everyone involved, we are proud to announce that more than $20,000 was raised for the Jeans for Genes fundraiser. This remarkable achievement will make a meaningful contribution to vital genetic research and provide much-needed support for families affected by genetic conditions.

COMMUNITY TABLE TUESDAYS

EVERY TUESDAY | 12PM EAST WEST KITCHEN

Each Tuesday, we reserve a Community Table where guests are invited to sit together, enjoy lunch, and connect in a relaxed, friendly environment. Whether you’re new to the area, catching up with familiar faces, or simply don’t feel like dining alone, our Community Table is open to everyone.

We extend our sincere thanks to our major sponsors, whose generosity played a crucial role in the success of the day. We are also deeply grateful to our community partners—Heartbeat of the Community, Jeans for Genes, Royal Rehab and Nimble Vets—for their involvement and commitment, as well as to our incredible team of volunteers, whose dedication ensured everything ran smoothly from start to finish.

Thank you to all who participated, supported, and contributed. Your enthusiasm and generosity once again highlighted the strength of our community and made this year’s Fun Run a truly heartwarming success.

Promoting social inclusion, connection, and community — because no one should dine alone.

Book via East West Kitchen or simply turn up on the day.

MAKE A STAND

Our Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club team proudly joined community groups and local supporters for the Make A Stand march in Macquarie Park on 26 November. Standing alongside organisations dedicated to safety and respect, we added our voice to the call to end domestic, family, and sexual violence in our community.

The march serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of raising awareness, supporting those affected, and honouring the lives tragically lost to violence. Each year, this event strengthens our shared commitment to advocate for change and promote safer environments for all.

Walking together demonstrated solidarity in action—united, visible, and determined to build a community where violence is never tolerated.

We extend our sincere thanks to our incredible staff and everyone who joined us in taking a stand. Your presence makes a difference, and your support helps drive the change we all strive to create.

IS BACK!

Club President, Jim, is all in. He’s been growing his hair just for this moment. Watch Jim lose his locks as he raises funds for an incredible cause. Come along, show your support, and be part of something that truly makes a difference. One shave. One cause. Big impact.

FISHING

Our October fishing trip enjoyed sunny weather and a great start off Bondi in 65m of water. Michael landed the biggest bag at 9.1kg, while Sam caught the biggest

fish—a 1.34kg flathead. The boat finished with 88 fish weighing 47.4kg.

November’s trip saw 14 members head out under overcast skies and difficult currents, resulting in some of our worst tangles in years. David caught the biggest fish, a 1.2kg trag, and Gary had the biggest bag at 5kg. The total catch was 32 fish at 17.48kg.

If you’re interested in joining, contact Sam Sundar (0413 000 303) or attend our monthly Fishing Club meeting on the third Thursday at 8pm (except December).

We fish about 5km east of North Head in 40–80m depths, with common catches including morwong, flathead, snapper, sweep and pigfish.

DARTS CLUB

Both A & B grade darts team finished 2025 strongly, upsetting stronger opposition to make the Grand Final. Both matches were exceedingly close, coming down to the final games, it seemed like two upsets could happen. Alas both teams fell short. I look forward to 2026 and continued success.

MEN’S BOWLS

Huge bowls success at Club Thirroul with the Men’s Division 4 side winning the 2025/26 Pennant. The last time the men won a Pennant was 2009, so it’s been a while between drinks! The team won five of six games during the season finishing top of the table. A tense Semi Final win put them into the Grand Final which they went on to clinch 58-49. A few quiet beverages were had after the game to celebrate the win ! The team will head to Kempsey/South West Rocks next year for the State Playoffs. At the time of publication the Div 2 team have also qualified for the Finals series, finishing third. Best of bowls to them as they fight for the title!

In Club Championship news, Lloyd Jones has won the Minor Singles title after a tight 25–22 match against Henry Urbanski, with both players delivering excellent draw bowls and conversion shots. The Major Singles title has also been decided, with Anthony O’Neill defeating Victor Koltovski 25–15, taking an early lead and maintaining control throughout.

A special mention to Jimmy Gilogley, who has proudly worn his Club Thirroul shirt at clubs across Australia during his six-month caravanning trip. Great stuff, Jim!

WOMEN’S BOWLS

2025 was an outstanding year for the Thirroul Women’s Bowling Club. With over 40 ladies turning up each week and close to 70 members in total, we remain one of the largest and most active women’s clubs in the Illawarra. The enthusiasm, commitment and camaraderie shown throughout the year have truly strengthened our club community.

In November, we proudly hosted a very successful Interschool Bowls Challenge, welcoming 15 teams from five local schools. It was a fantastic day of energy and learning, and it was wonderful to see so many young bowlers giving the sport a go. We are excited to build on these relationships and plan to host even more schoolbased events in the future. A big thank you to all our volunteers—your support ensured Club Thirroul was a warm, well-run and welcoming venue.

We also continued our tradition of hosting a regional competition for bowlers who have been playing for less than five years. This event once again drew a strong turnout and provided newer players with valuable experience in a supportive environment. It remains one of our club’s most important initiatives for fostering confidence and encouraging the next generation of bowlers.

Our Club Championships are now wrapping up for the year, with Vicki Attenborough’s team winning the Club Fours Championship and Kerry Vickery’s team finishing as runners-up. Congratulations to all who competed— your skills and sportsmanship continue to lift the standard of our club.

THIRROUL JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB UNSHACKLED IN 2026

2025 was a landmark year for Thirroul Junior Rugby League Club as we entered our 96th year serving children from Bulli to Scarborough. Participation continued to grow, strengthening our culture and contribution to grassroots Rugby League.

The club recorded its strongest registrations in years, with 500 players, 138 volunteers, and 36 teams from Under 6 to Under 16 boys and girls, plus an Open Women’s League Tag team representing the Mighty White and Blue.

This growth reflects our commitment to child development through participation, sportsmanship, and fair competition, guided by our core values of Health and Wellbeing, Education and Skill, and Social Inclusion. Highlights included training innovations, media

appearances, State of Origin experiences, and over 400 players participating in summer Oztag.

Looking ahead to 2026, growth has placed pressure on facilities, with 36 teams sharing one field in 2025. We’re excited to add a second training facility at Bulli Showgrounds, creating more space for development and enjoyment.

None of this would be possible without the continued support of our major sponsor Ryde Eastwood / Club Thirroul, who have become far more than financial partners and truly our clubhouse.

Thank you to the team at Club Thirroul — we look forward to a big 2026.
