PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Member

Firstly, I would like to wish all of the Ryde-Eastwood family a healthy and prosperous New Year, and a personal thank you for the members who attended our AGM; even though the numbers were not high the quality of information and feedback from our members certainly was. I hope all our members are enjoying the refurbishment of your club with the recent completion of our new bright foyer, our revamped Coffee Club, new carpet, and new furnishing of the lounge area. Next will be the installation of our own generator to ensure against future blackouts, followed by a refurbishment of our gaming area. Now, as we face the new exciting year ahead it is good to reflect on the year past. It has been a good year financially for the club with the sale of Hawks on Second, with the funds future-proofing our club. But this excitement was tempered by the loss of our President Keith Aggett. Just as Keith and the original Directors left all of us in the Ryde Eastwood family a legacy, the present Board will not just be sitting back with our financial future secure, but is intent on leaving a larger legacy for future members of the Ryde Eastwood family. We will not just be making decisions for the next year, but for the next decade and beyond. We certainly appreciate our retired and semi-retired members who assisted us to get to where we presently are, hence our plans in Council for an over 55’s living development in Ryedale/Terry Roads. We know we have to plan for our members of the future, hence our substantial sponsorship of the young men and women in our rugby league teams, our netball sides and even the very young in our learn-to-swim classes, together with their parents and siblings. Not forgetting of course all the members of our gym, dancing classes, intra clubs etc, who are all part of the Ryde-Eastwood family, who in time I believe will be the future leaders in our community (and future Board members too, I hope). I continue to be amazed at the ever-changing demographics in our Ryde-Eastwood community in which your club is a leader and substantial contributor. Early in 2018, our present Board and senior management will again revisit our strategic plan for the future, a working document that needs to be flexible enough to deal with the ever-changing world around us. This, of course, means many meetings with prospective builders and developers, and of course consolidating our relationship with Council for the betterment of our local community. When questioned at the AGM on strategic planning, I informed all that a part of my personal goals are: “to be the long-time leading provider of entertainment, sport and healthy living for all ages in the Ryde-Eastwood area while being recognised as a leader and contributor to the community“. This seemed to be well-received at the AGM and hopefully will be a guide to all members of the direction of our Board and senior management thoughts for our club’s future. To borrow Malcolm Chapple’s favourite saying, “Watch this space”. Again, many thanks to all of you in the Ryde-Eastwood family; we will continue to make your club a pride of place in the community. “See you in the club.” James (Jim) McClymont President

Vale John Dunlea I am sorry to inform members that we lost Director John Dunlea on 24th December 2017. John had been in poor health and had spent most of 2017 in hospital. Unfortunately, just when we thought he had turned the corner after two operations and the worst was behind him and he was about to commence rehabilitation, the effects of the last 12 months took a toll on his heart and he passed away. John was elected as a director to the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Board in 2003 and was a very active and enthusiastic board member during his tenure. John was Vice President of the Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club, serving on that Committee since 1987, and was also a life member of the Football Club. John had been involved in rugby league as a player, coach and administrator for over 60 years and was also a life member of Balmain Junior League where he spent many years in various positions. John had a long career in senior positions in the tile industry and it was largely due to John’s influence in convincing the Board to tile our new entrance in limestone that we owe the bright and welcoming atmosphere at the entrance to our club. John leaves behind wife Maureen, son Reece, his wife Carissa and grandchildren Caitlyn and Madison, and our hearts, condolences and best wishes go out to them. RIP John, you have been a vital and very active member of the Ryde-Eastwood family and you will be missed but you will live in our memories forever. Jim McClymont

We are a family-friendly swim school offering a broad range of lessons from 6 months of age up to adults, as well as catering for swimmers with special needs.
Adult classes are held during the day mid-week Thursdays, Fridays and also Saturdays.
Babies & Preschool classes are held Monday to Friday from 11am1pm, and to cater for all our working mums and dads we also offer preschool classes on a Saturday morning from 8am until 12pm.
Our continual support and guidance offered to our families and our staff helps us to remain a Swim School with a personal and caring approach while keeping our focus on water education and safety for all.
Our School Age Learn to Swim classes are by far the most popular with classes held Monday to Friday from 3.30pm - 5.30pm, and also on Saturday mornings from 8am until 12pm.
Generally, The Fitness Edge Swim School operates within the Public School term. We do hold lessons on pupil free days, but not on public holidays.
We also offer special needs classes for our swimmers that may require extra care and specialised teaching. Where possible we try and place our special swimmers in classes where they will benefit from interaction with other swimmers. However, limited intensive one-on-one classes are available if required. To further assist all our families with children that require extra care, all our special needs spots are rebated to ease any extra financial burden.
To encourage all our swimmers to showcase their swimming skills, The Fitness Edge has its own Swim Club. This is a parent-based club and offers our swimmers invaluable race experience in a comfortable environment. Home-based carnivals are generally held on the first Friday of each month, starting at 5.30pm.
Our more serious swimmers move onto Dolphins, Marlins and then into our three levels of squads. While the main focus in these levels is still correct technique, we also develop speed, strength and racing skills.

RYDE-EASTWOOD FUN RUN/WALK On Sunday 5 November 2017 over 100 RydeEastwood staff, their families and Fitness Edge members participated in the club’s second annual fun run / walk. The course was a ‘point to point’ between Meadowbank and Rydalmere wharves. Participants were able either to walk or run a 5km or 10km course. Despite the wet and blustery conditions, the morning was a resounding success with Club Vice-President, Dennis Petkovich, and director, Graeme Aggett, cooking up a tasty post-race BBQ in Memorial Park with refreshing cold drinks all around. Last year, Committee chairperson and Human Resources Manager, Jo Luke, said the aim was to grow the event each year. “Increasing from nearly 50 competitors in 2016,” Jo said, “to around 100 this year, well we can safely say the aim has come true! Building on that enthusiasm and success, this has firmly become a calendar day for the club.” And what better way to spend a healthy Sunday morning than exercising along such a picturesque course. We’re just hoping the weather will be a little kinder to us in 2018!

FOOTBALL REPORT Dear Members As you would imagine, there is not much happening on the football front at this time of the year. However, in saying that, 2018 is looking pretty exciting for the Ryde-Eastwood Hawks. Last year we had two U19 sides who both made the semi-finals which in itself was a great effort, when you consider this is our first season back in junior football. Moving forward towards 2018, we now have two U20 and two U18 sides and hopefully an open age women’s side all playing in the Sydney-wide competition.
It’s also exciting that we will be reverting to one of our original playing strips of Welsh scarlet with white piping on the chest and arms of the jersey.
Hopefully we will be up and running by my next report.
And we will also have our mannequin decked out in our playing strip within the club.
With Christmas over, all teams will have commenced training this first week in February, with the competition due to start in the first week in April.
All game days will be advertised throughout the club during the season with locations and times which will also available on the Club’s Facebook page.

INTERNAL CLUB NEWS CAMERA CLUB We welcome in 2018 from a strong position. Several new and potential members should swell our ranks this year. We are looking forward to an exciting year with great subjects, a number of outings and several ‘How to’ workshops to help all of those novices increase their skills. We are also hosting a three-way competition with two other clubs in May. An exhibition at the club around March / April will let members of the club see what we do. We invite members of the club to join a meeting as a guest; you never know we might even convince you to join!

GOLF CLUB The championships started at Dunheved with Dave Whybro hitting an unassailable lead and Yuri Popov runner-up. Round two was at Richmond with Billy Chick taking the honours from Steve Ferns on countback. The final round was played at Glenmore Park with Brian Ewin having a win and Sharon Norton runner-up. Congratulations to the A Grade Winner Dave Whybro and B Grade winner Frank Vetrisano and our 2017 Club Champion Steve Ferns. The President’s Cup was contested at Windsor with Fernando (can you hear the drums) Martins winning and a guest appearance from Greg Webber had him as runner-up. Dunheved was a wet morning with 13 brave golfers battling it out, and the winner was Sharon Norton and Warren Savy runner-up. The Guzzler Cup was battled out at Cabramatta and the honours went to Frank Vetrisano (he’ll be going for a hat trick next year). The day’s winner was Fernando with Frank runner-up. Richmond hosted a single Stableford with Billy Chick winning and Frank Vetrisano runner-up. Fox Hills once again hosted Ham’s Day with congratulations to Valery P. and Robert Wood winning in the mystery partners and feasting on Hams, and Greg Webber and Ulla Wood runners-up munching on smaller hams. The Club Championship finals are complete, with Donato Mallari and Arthur Huynh finishing as equal winners and Chris Ball third. While the club championship finals were taking place, the RydeEastwood Classic tournament was held for the other players, and was won overall by Robert Hvistendahl, with Lorenzo Escalante and Jeremy Plunkett equal second. The Division 2 winner was Norm Greenwood. At the club’s prize-anddinner night in December, in addition to all tournament placegetters, awards were also presented to Shane Dibley for “Most Improved”. TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB We thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas lunch held at RydeEastwood Leagues Club on Friday 1st December 2017; we had a great attendance and everyone had a good time. A huge thank you to our Patrons, Allen Douglas and Dennis Petrovich for their support throughout the year, and while Dennis was able to attend our party unfortunately Allen was not. Thank you to chef Sidney and his staff for the lovely food; we all thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and the great service provided. The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Thursday 8 February 2018 at 7pm at the Club so please come along and support us and nominate the new committee for 2018. TRAVEL CLUB In between getting the Christmas vittles and presents together we have time to reflect on the period past and wonder where the year has gone. August was our lunch at Doyles Restaurant, now an annual affair on a sparkling day for crossing the Harbour to Watson’s Bay. August was a bit quiet, as members seemed to prefer home duties. October was a great day out, driving along the highway to Wollongong where we had lunch and then back via the Scenic route along the coastal Grand Pacific Drive. November was exciting for the ‘once-a-year’ punters on the Race that stops the Nation! There were some happy faces after the lunch and the race. And then a quiet time for our Members’ Morning Tea, which was well-attended. where we just sat and chatted, especially with tea and a helping of jam and cream on scones. The Year ended with our traditional Christmas dinner, the tables all decorated and lit with a miniature Santa. Many members went home thrilled with their present from Santa. EUCHRE CLUB Don has been a member of RELC for approximately 20 years and has been involved in the Euchre Club for 15 years, serving as President for the past 11 years. He is the third person to have held that office in the 39 years since the Euchre club was first established. Don took on the role at a difficult time for the Euchre club. Upon taking the position, Don had the task of addressing numerous issues and over his tenure to date he has managed to keep a steady watch over the strength of the group, updated the Rules and Constitution, as well as making it an enjoyable social Wednesday night. Don is also involved with the Combined Ryde Probus Club that meets at RELC, as its social outings activities officer. What best sums Don up is that he always works for the betterment of all who can enjoy an evening of cards with no pressure. GOLF CLUB Tony has been an active member of the Ryde-Eastwood Golf Club for over 30 years. During this time he has served on the committee for 27 years including as a Committee Member for 4 years, Handicapper for 4 years, Treasurer for 2 years, Vice Captain for 2 years, Captain for 4 years and President for the past 11 years. Tony works tirelessly for the club to ensure all members enjoy their golf. He is often the first to arrive before 6am each Sunday morning to ensure everything is set up. Congratulations are extended to both recipients on their awards and for the excellent work they do for their respective Clubs.
