PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Member, I hope all members and their families had a pleasant and Merry Christmas and a happy New Year, and celebrated Australia Day in our customary way despite all the horrendous happenings around the world, unfortunately including our City. Our thoughts and condolences go out to all those directly involved.
The Annual General Meeting of the RydeEastwood District Rugby League Football club was held in November and the following members were elected to the Committee:
With 2014 now behind us, I would like to acknowledge some achievements of note over this period. Firstly, for the 6th consecutive year our staff members competed in the Run Sydney 10 km Fundraiser held at Homebush, with 35 staff, 8 family members and 3 friends all participating. The Club finished an impressive 3rd in the team event and raised $4,720 for the Children’s Medical Research Institute at Westmead. Well done to all. Our Club Service Awards presented in December saw a number of staff members awarded recognition for service to the club. The recipients on the night were Barbara Schmitt, 40-years (a fantastic achievement Barbara). Linda Besgrove and David Coleman, 25-years. Chris McCarthy and Maurice Cousley, 20-years. Raidell Johnston, Alvina Bading, Jonathan Potter, Ko Ko Naing and Chris Kalligas, 15-years. Juan Gonzalez, Cathy Filimoekava and Kerrie Day 10-years, and Kevin Axisa, Samantha Pozzato, Sylvie Kassab and Alison Hall all 5-year service awards. Well done to all and thank you on behalf of all members for your loyalty and service over these periods.

Our Club recently received a letter from Care Flight providing details of a recent incident in Eastwood to which their Rapid Response Helicopter crew were quickly on hand to treat and transport a young boy to hospital with serious burns. Care Flight congratulated the Club on its ongoing support. Incidents such as this reinforce the reason why your Club supports these lifesaving organisations each year. (A copy of that letter is on page 5 of this journal).
Ryde-Eastwood will again Sponsor the West Tigers State Cup Squad, and the opening round draw for 2015 has been announced with the Wests Tigers playing Newtown at Henson Park on Saturday 7th March.
The Annual Race Day in support of The Adam Gardiner Fund, of which our Club is the major sponsor, was held at Rosehill Racecourse in November and all in attendance had a great day with over $16,000 raised for this worthy Fund. The proceeds are provided to the Immunology Clinic at Westmead Hospital, specifically to fund a clinic for the treatment of Amyloidosis and related diseases.
Details of all fixtures will again be placed on the Notice Board located in the foyer of the Leagues Club.
Our Colossus members’ promotion commenced on 15th January and runs through until the 26th February. Members can swipe twice daily between 12pm-3pm and 6pm-9pm for a chance to win some great instant prizes. For further details refer to page 3. In 2015 your Board and Management will continue to implement some long-term plans to keep your Club at the forefront of the Industry, and these plans will be detailed to members for perusal at the appropriate time. Again, on behalf of the Board, Management and Staff, I thank all Members for their continued support over last year and wish you all both health and happiness in the coming months. WELL DONE TEAM! For the 6th consecutive year, Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club staff members turned out in force to complete the RunSydney 10km fundraiser. 35 staff, 8 family members plus 3 friends competed for Team Ryde-Eastwood. Ryde-Eastwood finished an impressive third overall in the 10km teams, and a big congratulations to all those who participated for the club on coming a mightily impressive FIRST in the corporate team challenge! We are also very proud to report that the club raised $4,720 for the Children’s Medical Research Institute. Thank you Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club team members for your support! INTERNAL CLUBS CAMERA CLUB A successful 2014 came to a wonderful close for us with our annual Presentation Awards
And Christmas Party. We have much to look forward to in 2015. In 2014 our club President introduced and ran workshops to help new members to get to know their photographic gear. Because of the success of these workshops, the club under the direction of our President will be conducting similar outings to assist new members to get to know their gear. Come and be a part of this experience. Among the many areas of photography that we will be investigating this year are the fields of Urban Grunge photography, Action Image capture, Nature Photography and Night Photography. Guest speakers are invited to share their expertise with us. But the most important role that the Camera Club plays is the support of its members as photographers. We enjoy capturing images and are always striving to capture that special moment. We thank Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and the directors for their ongoing support, and especially for the refreshments that they so kindly provide for us at each of our Committee meetings and Monday night meetings. Our first meeting for 2015 will be held at the RELC on February 9th at 7.30pm. Come and join us. The joint winners were Arthur Huynh and Donato Mallari, with Egon Cardenas in third place. The club’s “Classic” tournament finished in early December and was won by Christopher Ball. Division 2 was won by Yifu Wu. In late November, the club hosted the NSW Blitz (5 minutes per player for the whole game) Championships, which was won by Blair Mandla on 9½/11 with Jason Hu and Stanislav Berezovski equal second. The club’s annual general meeting will be held on 28th January 2015. It will be followed by the club’s Rapid Play championship tournament in the first three weeks of February. EUCHRE CLUB The Euchre Club meets weekly in the Willandra room on Wednesday evenings at 7.20pm. A warm invitation is extended to all experienced euchre players to come along and play the game and enjoy the light supper at the conclusion of the evening. On Tuesday 2nd December 36 Euchre Club members and their partners enjoyed a delicious traditional Christmas dinner in the Golden Hawk Chinese Restaurant. THE FISHING CLUB The 2014 fishing year has come to an end with both the Keith Aggett Trophy for the biggest fish and the L J Hayes Trophy for the heaviest weight of fish going to the one member, Gary Lee. Well done Gary. The biggest fish was a 3.2kg snapper, a bit down on last year’s winning fish, a 6kg snapper, but Gary Lee’s heaviest fish of 55.5kg was up on last year’s 52.2kg. It was a good year with 11 trips out of the heads being better than last year with many trips cancelled due to bad weather. A total of 344.29kgs of quality fish were caught by 23 members. The fishing club organises monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Trevor Fahey, President RELC Fishing Club. GOLF CLUB The final round of the championships was at Cabramatta and congratulations to our champions – Tony Campbell (A grade) and Natalia P. (B grade). This year’s runners-up were Robert Wood and Kaye Henderson. Congratulations to our 2014 club champion, Robert Wood. For the day’s event our winners were Tony Campbell (A Grade) Jeff Akers (B Grade). Runners-up were Steve Ferns (obviously refreshed from his break on the Cook Islands), (A grade) and Sharon Norton, one our new members (B grade). The President’s Cup was tussled out at Penrith on a nice and warm morning and congratulations to Steve Ferns (still in form after the holiday) with a net 67, closely followed by Edwin Kwong on 69, from a count back from Valery P. Massey Park hosted that dreaded multiplier game but that didn’t seem to bother our winning team of the ever-consistent Natalia P. and Steve Mac with 96 points, and a fairway behind were our runner-up pair of Daryl Allwood and John Nilan on 76 points. The Guzzler’s Cup winner for 2014 is Eric Tsui, on a 40 degree Sunday morning at Lynwood. Congratulations to everyone for surviving the heat. The day’s event was won by Robert Wood (A grade) and Eric Tsui (B grade). Runner-up prizes were awarded to Steve Ferns & Edwin Kwong. Dunheved was a single stableford and the A grade was the Tony show, with TTT beating TC on a count back, and in B Grade Dave McCullum narrowly beat Peter Lau by 1 point. Hams Day had its usual suspense with everyone hoping to draw Valery P. as a partner but eventually the consistent pair of Brian Ewin and Ulla Wood took home the big hams, and smaller versions were handed out to Valery P. and Billy Chick. Our end of year Christmas lunch and dinner were both well attended in the dining room, where Sidney and his staff provided us with an excellent menu, enjoyed by all. We are grateful to the Board of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club for their continued support of our bowls club and we were pleased to welcome our Patrol, Mr Jack King, to our dinner. This year the Consistency Awards were announced at our breakup functions. The Wednesday Ladies’ Consistency Award winner was Claire Grebert with Pat Pettie runner-up. Thursday night Consistency Awards were shared equal first by Marina Pelaez and Claire Grebert (Ladies’) and Alfredo Pelaez and Jim Harvey (Men’s). Congratulations to those players. In 2015 we look forward to another socially enjoyable year of bowling and wish good luck to several of our bowlers who will complete in the up-coming State Championships throughout the year and hopefully in the Australian Championships in Warnambool Vic, in August. Good luck also to our players who will take part in our monthly pennant games against other

It is with sadness that one of our beloved ladies and a longstanding member, Morna Tuckey, passed away on 18th December 2014. Her infectious laugh and beaming smile will be greatly missed. Our condolences go to her two sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. We are looking forward to our many bus, train and ferry outings in 2015 with new sights to see and new friendships to make so come along and join us. Our Solo (cards) players have had very little rest over Christmas and are now in full swing, meeting every Thursday at 1.30pm at the Club. A reminder to those who may have forgotten, our Annual General Meeting takes place on Thursday 19th February when all Committee positions become vacant so please come along and vote. Our seniors’ meetings are on the first and third Thursday at 11am of each month, held in the function rooms at the Club, and 2015 Membership is now open for just $5 for the year. The Squash Club entered two teams in this comp, Div 5 (captained by Joe Son Kee) and Div 9 (captained by Cheryl Farrugia). Unfortunately neither team made the finals this time around, but a great effort from everyone competing at such a high level. Please remember the Squash AGM will be held early in the New Year, so get along and get involved and support the club. Just a thought: The person interested in success has to learn to view failure as a healthy, inevitable part of the process of getting to the top. TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB Welcome to 2015. LINE DANCING ‘LINEDANCING for BEGINNERS’ sessions are popular every Wednesday at 7pm and Thursday at 12 noon, with very affordable casual rates and no term fees. A great form of exercise in a friendly atmosphere. The annual Line Dance Charity Ball is being held on 28th March 2015 at the Homebush State Sports Stadium. Our line dancers have raised in excess of $100,000 for Ronald McDonald House Westmead. Thank you to everyone involved for contributing and making this a most spectacular evening. The Fitness Edge Biggest Loser Competition a “BIG” Success The Fitness Edge would like to extend a BIG thank you to all participants in the Fitness Edge’s inaugural “Biggest Loser Competition”. The 11-week programme started in October 2014. Depending on their fitness goals, entrants could choose to join one of four teams of specialist personal trainers: the red team, the yellow team, the orange team or the green team. Each week entrants worked hard with their trainers to attain their weekly goals. Regular updates were blogged via an e-newsletter and everyone received encouragement to keep on going! The Biggest Winner! After 11 weeks of intense competition David Ross (pictured 2nd left) of the Orange team ran out eventual winner of the individual prize. He lost an incredible 10.81% of his own body weight, a fantastic achievement. Congratulations David! In the team event, members that completed the final weigh in from the Yellow team reigned supreme with a combined 4.23% weight loss, and all will receive a 20% discount on their next membership here at The Fitness Edge. Preschool Water Safety 2015 We can help you make your children safer in and around water this summer. The Fitness Edge Swim School Babies and Pre-schooler swimming classes are designed to develop water confidence, safety, survival skills, which all develop a respect for the water. Lessons are 30 minutes duration and are conducted by our friendly and encouraging Austswim Qualified Infant Instructors. According to legendary swimming coach, Laurie Lawrence, “Learning to swim has many benefits for our children. It’s great for their health and wellbeing; it enhances their self-esteem and importantly teaches them a respect for water. While children are capable of being independently mobile in the water from a very young age, they must never be left unsupervised. No child is drown-proof”. According to the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia, 49% of child fatalities aged 0-4 drowned in a swimming pool. The Fitness Edge Swim School recommends that parents and carers alike prepare their young ones to reduce the risk of childhood drowning. The Fitness Edge Swim School offers a safe, friendly and encouraging environment for people of all ages and abilities. Our youngest students are six months of age and our most senior member is in their 70s. It’s never too late to learn the life skill of swimming. All staff at The Fitness Edge are Austswim Qualified and all hold current CPR certification. Babies & Preschool classes are held Monday to Friday between 11am and 1.30pm. There are limited Preschool positions on Saturdays. All Instructors on these classes are qualified in Austswim Infant & Preschool Aquatics. Booking Days for children between 6 months and 5 years are normally released at 10am on the 2nd Monday of each School Holidays with the exception of the Christmas break which is the third Monday in January.
School Age Learn to swim classes are by far the most popular, with Term 1 - 2015 booked out. The classes cater for all school ages and abilities. The focus for younger children is on safety and gaining confidence, from there we develop all swimming strokes. Our more serious swimmers move onto Mini Squad and Squads. While the main focus in these levels in still correct technique, speed and racing skills are also developed. Adult classes are held on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings. We have 2 levels - Beginners and Intermediate. Beginner classes are for members who are not confident to swim with their faces in the water, and intermediate classes for members who can swim but want to improve their technique. Generally, The Fitness Edge Swim School operates within the Public School term. We do hold lessons on Pupil Free days, but not on Public Holidays. During School Holidays we offer an Intensive Swim Programme for our students currently in the programme. These programmes are very beneficial and often result in a surge of aquatic progress. The Fitness Edge has its own Swim Club which is a parent-based club that offers the children an opportunity to showcase what they have learned in their lessons. Home-based carnivals are generally held on the first Friday of each month starting at 5.30pm. Members of the Swim Club must be currently enrolled in the Swim School.
