PRESIDENT’S REPORT

CEO’S REPORT Dear Members,

Dear Members, With another AGM out of the way I hope the New Year finds you safe and well. You know the best thing about 2021 it’s over. We all have our Covid stories to tell but I would like to especially thank our staff and management for their terrific effort in 2021. This was probably the most difficult year in the club’s history, and I thank you one and all for your outstanding effort. I would now like to concentrate on our club’s future, despite all that we had to bear in the last two years. Your Board and management are determined for the continued success of your club. We recently undertook an intense strategic planning exercise. With the severe disruption to many businesses in our community, including ours, the importance of planning for our future is all the more important. We can no longer take for granted the club’s traditional income streams and we have to decide what our present and future members require for us to be competitive and relevant, and to lead us into the years ahead. Thanks to present and past members, Board members and the management team, we have a sound financial base, but we need not only to protect this but also build upon it for our future, hence the strategic planning. In the past, members were happy to visit the club to enjoy gaming, a drink and dining at the bistro. The modern member demands much more, including contemporary cuisine, diverse leisure activities, health and aquatic facilities, child-care, as well as a plethora of community offerings. Currently we offer all this but to match and offer more than our competitors we must aim even higher. On top of this, we seek to reduce our reliance on gaming and to diversify our income streams. This is the future of your club and our community. While all these directives are in motion, the club has to be very conscious of managing unplanned circumstances such as Covid, regulation changes, industrial and legal requirements, as well as running both Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and Club Thirroul. Not to mention maintaining momentum on the complex planning and building of the club’s Senior Housing project. What Covid has shown us and what members have told us is that we are much more than just a club, we are a place at the HEART of our community for everyone to enjoy. Our local community has exciting projects on the go and with our 35,000 members we aim to be an integral part of the process. There is the 2025 West Ryde Precinct master plan from Ryde City Council. As significant landowners, we aim to work with Council to deliver an exciting result for our local area. Also in the pipeline is the NSW Government’s large Education precinct at Meadowbank, as well as the revamping of Ryde Hospital. We aim to work closely with Government and Council to be part of the future community while continuing to explore initiatives including medical specialist fields, education expansion and accommodation. As previously stated, we are more than just a club, we are a 35,000 strong community and we want to take our Ryde-Eastwood family on the journey with us. I, the Board and Management, are open to any suggestions our members may like to make to assist in the successful growth of the local Ryde-Eastwood area. Even if some of the dreams and aspirations come to fruition we will still need to plan for the future growth of your club, which starts another exciting journey.

I would like to start by wishing all our members and their families a Happy New Year. Once again, it has been a difficult start to the year and one that we feel will take a bit longer to return to our full club offering. However, we have faith in our vision and will continue to provide the safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment and offering for all members. I would also like to recognise staff and management efforts during the last six weeks, all of whom have been committed to ensuring we have still been able to operate. The effects of Covid has affected all businesses with many closing or providing reduced offerings. The team understands the importance of what we do for our members and has been dedicated to keeping our doors open. The club has set a clear vision for its plans for 2022, ensuring that we build upon our current offering and reinforcing our future in the community. We have been working further on our masterplan, seeking opportunities for the club’s future growth with a focus on new and improved offerings for the wider community. We are pleased to advise that we continue moving forward with our Seniors Housing project with our planning proposal having been recommended for approval in late 2021. With the engagement of expert consultants, we have now progressed to start the design stage of the vision. We will continue to work with Council to ensure we deliver a D.A. that not only suits the future residents but also benefits the community. We will work together with members to ensure that our vision exceeds all member and community expectations. In late December at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues, the club opened the new Bamboo Blossom dining room offering a modern Asian dining experience that many members have so far enjoyed. Social Kitchen and the Coffee Club continue to operate for all members and guests to enjoy. Also in December, we completed our long-awaited Cash and Car draw. There were some happy cash prize winners on the night and a big congratulations goes to member Karen Grace on winning the Audi A1. Although Covid has again affected our ability to increase our activities and events we will continue to work on bringing back promotions and events for our members’ benefit where possible and as soon as possible. We are also working on the plans for Club Thirroul with a D.A. currently with Council to complete upgrades at the club, including a new gaming room and alfresco space, an upgrade to the bar and a new Alfresco F&B offering. We will update members more in the coming months on the timeline for completion of these changes at the club. Club Thirroul saw some great patronage for the Christmas Raffles and promotions over November and December, and we hope to have more to offer members in the coming months.

I would like to conclude this report by reassuring members that the club’s Board and management are focused on developing and growing its presence in the community to ensure we meet the needs of all current and future members. We are always conscious of remembering our core principles and values as we forge stronger ties with the community in so many ways. Thank you for your present and past patronage; you have made all of this possible so far. Together, let’s take our club even further. See you in the club.

Finally, I would like to reassure members that the team at Ryde-Eastwood is always focused on providing a safe and welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy a great experience, especially at times like this. I thank all members for being part of Ryde-Eastwood and Club Thirroul, and for your continued loyalty and support through 2021 and into 2022.

GET YOUR FITNESS EDGE SWIM SCHOOL GOVERNMENT PROGRAMME FIRST LAP VOUCHERS! The Fitness Edge Swim School Babies and Preschooler swimming classes are designed to develop water confidence, safety, survival skills, which all develop a respect for the water. Lessons are 30 minutes duration and are conducted by our friendly and encouraging Austswim Qualified Infant Instructors. The Fitness Edge Swim School offers a safe, friendly and encouraging environment for people of all ages and abilities. Our youngest students are 6 months of age, and our most senior member is in their 70s. It’s never too late to learn the life skill of swimming.

Our more serious swimmers move onto our stroke correction classes, mastering breaststroke and butterfly, and then onto Pre-Squad and Squads. While the main focus in these levels in still correct technique, speed and racing skills are also developed. Adult classes are held on Wednesday 5.30pm, Thursday 12pm, Friday 12pm and Saturday 9am and 9.45am. With only 6 in the adult classes, you can work at your own pace.

SENIORS HOUSING @ RYDE-EASTWOOD

Ryde-Eastwood Leagues has reached an exciting milestone with its vision of a Seniors Housing development, and would like to keep members and the community informed through 2022 as we look to bring this community benefit to life. Ryde-Eastwood has a significant number of members over the age of 65 and the development of a Seniors Living Community would be an extension of our current member offering and one that will benefit the community as a whole. The provision of a Seniors Living Community associated with the club provides value to senior members looking for purpose-built and age-appropriate housing in a community setting.

The vision for the project is: To provide high quality, modern seniors living accommodation with the numerous social services and facilities for the community that the club currently provides, with the development located in close proximity to the existing West Ryde Town Centre. The Seniors Living Community will be designed as an aspiring offering to meet the evolving needs of RELC members and the broader community. The design principles will allow residents to ‘age-in-place’ and provide exemplary facilities and services offering a premium product above the standard of the existing residential market in the area. As such, it will be aspirational and relevant well into the future. The project objectives include developing and operating a Seniors Living Community which: • Provides an accessible and high-quality seniors housing complex that is attractive to members and the broader community. • Embraces the concept and principles of community vitality.

Facilitates vibrancy and social interaction. Leverages the existing facilities and services of the club (hence delivering synergies), with a strong link to our core values. Supports ageing-in-place, through design and service provision. Provides and promotes enjoyment of the outdoors and green spaces. Enables intergenerational interaction. The club recently engaged members with a survey to identify the key aspects of the project that ensures it provides an offering that meets the residents’ needs. We thank members for taking part and providing your valuable feedback. Key findings were presented on space needs, and facility and standards that will be key in its ongoing design and development. Moving forward, we will continue to engage with members, the wider community and relevant parties including Council to develop an offering that adds value and relevance to the community. We will listen to our members with the aim of creating an offering to be proud of and which replicates the current inclusions of the Club. Sport & Community News FOOTBALL REPORT I would like to welcome all members to the 2022 season. We look forward to continuing our support of junior rugby league and the Ryde Eastwood Hawks’ senior teams. Below is an update from Brad Wilson, Secretary of the Ryde Eastwood Hawks Combined.

This season we will field teams from 18 years and older. Both male and female players will have teams available to them, so they can continue their enjoyment of rugby league. We have again agreed to continue our relationship with Wests Tigers, being their primary pathway club. This is very exciting as we guide and nurture our players to their goals and dreams. Our women can progress to the Women’s Harvey Norman competition and our men can proceed to the NRL.

We will again be playing our home games at TG Milner Sports Ground, Marsfield. We will continue to support our four junior league clubs (Dundas Shamrocks, Carlingford Cougars, Holy Cross Rhinos and North Ryde Hawks). The club’s premier teams in the Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield will once again be coached by former NRL players, Jarred Farlow and Dane Morgan, respectively. This will be the second season for both coaches and they are excited for the season to start. We have recruited well for this season, as we needed to fill some gaps in our squads. I am proud to mention that we have lost eight players to other clubs for this season. All of these players are going to the next level to further their careers. With this happening, it means our club has done its job and we wish these players all the very best moving forward. Hopefully, we will see you in the NRL or WNRL.

STAFF CHRISTMAS PARTY RAISES $2,000 FOR CHILDREN’S MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE

THE WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE

Staff dug deep at their Christmas party this year and raised a $500 donation for long-time donation partner CMRI, based at Westmead Hospital.

Last year the Ryde-Eastwood family raised $4,000 at its World’s Greatest Shave event, which contributed in the fight against blood cancer.

HR manager Jo Luke’s relationship with CMRIs’ Jeans for Genes initiative to fund the research needed to save children’s lives spans more than two decades.

In 2022, we are proud to announce that we will be doing it again and aiming to raise even more money for The Leukaemia Foundation.

On the night, Jo said, “It’s another proud moment for RydeEastwood knowing that by making this donation we’re continuing to make a difference to children’s lives.”

So, come along and shave or colour your hair this March and help Aussie families beat blood cancer. Or please kindly make a donation at one of the donation boxes around the club.

The Ryde-Eastwood Board very generously matched the staff donation by 3 to 1, adding another $1,500 to the final amount. A big thanks to everyone in the Ryde-Eastwood family who ‘dug deep’ for such a wonderful cause!

PINK WEEK FUNDRAISING FOR THE MCGRATH FOUNDATION

Once again, Ryde-Eastwood is proud to partner with the McGrath Foundation, which raises money to fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses, who provide invaluable support and care to women and men experiencing breast cancer. As part of our Pink Week fundraising initiatives, we are hosting PINK BINGO on Wednesday 23 February at 11am. And PINK TRIVIA on Wednesday 23rd at 7pm. We encourage all entrants to dress up as ‘pink as possible’, and the member wearing the ‘Pinkest’ outfit will win a $50 prize hamper. To be part of the Pink Week bingo and trivia fun we encourage all participants to make a gold coin donation to help in the Foundation’s fight against breast cancer. In Pink Week, the Club will also donate $1 for every membership sold and 10% of all raffle ticket sales. And Social Kitchen and the Coffee Club will be offering some great Pink Week specials.
