PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Member Welcome to the May edition of our journal and I hope all our Ryde Eastwood family had a great Easter. A quick update as to where the club is up to. Since my last report the main bar and lounge have been renovated and we have received positive feedback on the friendly and inviting atmosphere in this area. The next work planned is updating the gaming area to complete the present renovations in your club. The $700,000 generator has been installed, so if we do experience any blackouts in our area then you have a safe place to come. Meanwhile, the Board and Management are working on our future exciting plans, as outlined in the last journal, i.e. the purchase from Council of the laneway around the club and the rezoning of our other properties for the ‘Seniors Living’ proposal. Every time I walk around the club and see the broad spectrum of members enjoying the facilities, it makes me so proud to be President of your club. I have attended meetings with the Travel Club, Camera Club, Probus etc., as well as our members’ harbour cruise just to name a few, and have been warmly welcomed at all of them. In my recent address to the Ryde Probus, with John Alexander, Victor Dominello and the Presidents of Lions and Rotary Clubs in attendance, I spoke about the perceptions of those of us that work for and in our community. As a club President I know that it is often mentioned that the monies we donate to our community is mandated so we have to donate it. But while the mandated amount is approximately $350,000, the total amount we put back into the community (including the contribution from our Football Club to Junior League) is well over one million dollars a year. The fact is, all of us are on the same page and are working for and are proud to be a part of our community and are doing everything we can to better it. Most of the Ryde-Eastwood family members have been with us for quite some time and never fail to congratulate the Board on the way it is taking the club forward. At the same time I have been to the launch of our Rugby League teams and our ERNA netball teams, and I marvel at the wonderful young people our community is producing. As I walk my three kilometres in the Fitness Edge pool, I also see our members enjoying the Aqua classes (I love the 60s and 70s music they often play, like ‘Itsy bittsy teeney weeney yellow polka dot bikini’ which really gets me bouncing along)! They then turn the pool over for our ‘learn to swim’ classes, which are full of excited kids with their parents or carers looking on.
FOOTBALL REPORT The 2018 season launch was held at the Leagues Club on Sunday 25 March. The event was well-attended by players and their families, introducing all five teams and coaches. A good time was had by all. Five players, both male and female, were selected to display the new Ryde-Eastwood Hawks playing strip, which was well-received by all (refer page 21). For season 2018, which kicked off on Sunday 8th April, the Ryde-Eastwood Hawks are fielding 5 teams: 2 under-18 and 2 under-20 teams plus our first female rugby league side, which will create Ryde-Eastwood Hawks history. Just on the playing strip and off-field apparel, it would be remiss of me not to thank Michael Frain, our manager of football operations, for his time and effort spent on the design of this year’s gear. Again Michael, on behalf of the Committee a big thank you for a great job. Numbers at training are increasing, both male and female, as word spreads about the Ryde-Eastwood Hawks and how well players are looked after. To date, two trials have been played with many promising players unearthed. If this is anything to go by (not counting the chickens before they’ve hatched) we should have a great season. As a former mentor for the Max Potential Future Leadership teams I have full confidence in the future of our community, with the young ones coming through as future club members or maybe staff, management or even Board members. We certainly have a mixture of experience and youthful exuberance in our club, which gives us confidence for the future. Remember, as you read this journal you are part of the Ryde-Eastwood family. If their key opens the box, then that member wins the car! If not, they pick from one of 14 cash envelopes. Then a further five names are drawn. If the car has not been won the same procedure applies - members select a key and try it on the locked display box and either win the car or pick a cash envelope. INTERNAL CLUBS CAMERA CLUB This year has really started well for the Camera Club, we have had an amazing number of people join. A couple of old faces have come back to us and some new ones wanting to join in the fun for this year. We have set ourselves several great outings and competitions. We unfortunately missed out on the competition between Eastwood (UK) and Eastwood (Aus). The competition did however, prove very close with Eastwood (Aus) only losing by a few points. It was lovely to see new entrants in the competition this year which shows that people are learning and improving. A very unusual outing to Rookwood cemetery proved a hit with members and we expect to see lots of photos in upcoming competitions. The exhibition by our members in the club foyer proved to be of interest to members and guests with people making positive comments. We are hoping it will turn out to be an annual event.
Aggett trophy fisherman of the year for the biggest fish was won by Garry Lam with a 2kg Kingfish. The L.J. Hayes trophy for the heaviest bag of edible fish was won by Sam Sundar with 51kg of fish for the year. Our February trip was cancelled due to bad weather and our March trip started out well, but by 9am 25 knot winds came up forcing us to fish at the entrance to the Heads. We were catching Flathead but a seal was hanging around looking for an easy meal and Terry Choy had his hard work robbed by the seal who took his fish near the surface. Terry still had the biggest bag with 2.7kg while Gary Lee caught the biggest fish of the day, a 1.5kg Teraglin. The fishing club organizes monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any club member interest in joining us should contact Sam Sundar on 0413 000 303 or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of every month at 8pm (except December). CHESS CLUB The club’s 47th annual general meeting was held on Wednesday 24 January, and the following officers were elected for 2018: President – Les Mikolajczyk; Vice-President – Bill Gletsos; Treasurer – Mohan Pagadala; Secretary – Rob Watson. In February we held our annual Rapid Championship tournament (25 minutes flat), which was won by Chris Ball on 7/9, half a point clear of Suranga Seneviratne in second place and a point ahead of Shane Dibley, Donato Mallari and Rob Watson in third. The U1600 division was won by Natarajan Alagusamy and Les Mikolajczyk on 4/9 with Vince Chiara and James Hickey equal third. The Club Championship Preliminary round-robin tournament has passed the halfway point and after 6 rounds has the following leaders: Group A – Shane Dibley (6/6) and Rob Watson (5/6); Group B – Donato Mallari (6/6) and Michael Anderson (5.5/6); Group C – Chris Ball (6/6) and Michael Roh & Suranga Seneviratne (5.5/6). GOLF CLUB Fox Hills was the host of the first game for 2018 on a sunny day when it was already 35 degrees at 6.30 am – a few brave souls battled it out with Ulla Wood winning (she does love the heat), and David McCullum runner-up. Cabramatta hosted our first Medal Round and medals were awarded to Greg Webber (back from a spell) and Colin Cope. Runners-up on the day were Robert Wood and Chris Spence. The second medal was at The Ridge with Tony T. and John Nilan winning. Richmond hosted the qualifier for Matchplay – good luck to all the qualifiers, and on the day Slava S. narrowly beat Robert Wood. Round 1 of the Stableford trophy was at North Turramurra where we had all the conditions, sunny and hot, cloudy and cool and then finally the gale force winds. We had a first-time winner Siva S. on count back from John Nilan. Dunheved hosted a medal round with Robert Wood and Peter Lau taking the honours. Warren Savy missed out on a medal on countback in A grade and the B grade runnerup was Brian Ewin. Valery P. had an adventurous day with his buggy, bag and clubs having a swim on the 2nd hole, although it didn’t hinder his ball striking for the last few holes. EUCHRE CLUB This year has started very well for the Euchre Club and we are all enjoying the evenings with exciting games and close results. Our Annual General Meeting was held on 14th February 2018 and the following members were elected for the next year. President: Don Baillie, Vice President: Rhonda Fekete, Secretary: June Stewart and Treasurer: Mary Griffiths. INDOOR BOWLS Attendance has been very good at the Indoor Bowls games on Wednesdays and also on Thursday nights. Some of our members have been unwell and we wish them a speedy recovery. It was a fun time as the Wednesday ladies celebrated Easter with a lunch and Hat Parade and we look forward to celebrating Mother’s Day and Christmas-in-July lunches and dinners for the Thursday night players. Many thanks to our hard working Committee. Some of our members regularly compete in State and Pennant competitions and will try out for the Australian Championships to be held in Caloundra, Queensland in August. SENIORS CLUB The year is flying by and the REL Seniors seem to get busier with each month. Our two meetings a month (the first and third Thursday at 11am) in the function rooms at the Club come around so quickly. Again, we have been on our monthly bus excursions, a three hour lunch cruise on board the Bass and Flinders, and we
celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at Waterview Restaurant, Berowra Waters (never disappointing). We have “Canoelands” Orchard and the Lindt Chocolate outlet, the Nan Tien Temple and Guide Dogs to look forward to and many more bus trips up until November. The Doyle’s Winter Special at Watsons Bay has been booked so dress to keep warm and join us for a lovely soup and fish and chip lunch. Our usual game of Solo (cards) is played every Thursday and our monthly Monday walks are proving very popular, especially as the walkers always find somewhere nice to have lunch. This year we have had a wonderful and broad array of speakers at our General Meeting on the third Thursday so come along and see what happens, you are most welcome. Our first trip of the year was on 18th February 2018, when we went to Towradgi Bowling club, where we enjoyed a lovely lunch which we thoroughly enjoyed as we chatted happily to the members. The second trip on Sunday 22 April 2018 we went to Picton Bowling Club, also a great day as we always enjoyed ourselves at the Club. Then on 17 June 2018 we were off to Umina Bowling Club, where we had a good day as we always do. The bus leaves at 9.30am from Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun, as the saying goes “The more the merrier”, and hopefully all our members who were previously ill have recovered and can join us once again. TRAVEL CLUB The New Year got away to a good start with our first social meeting, a lunch at the Bistro. A number of Members attended this get together and chat for 2018. Of course, we hold our Monthly meeting on the first Tuesday in the month in the Ryedale Room. In February we held a very enjoyable ‘Bass and Flinders Day Cruise’, which was very well attended. March was the Travel Club AGM which was again well attended by Club Members. The following were elected, Yvonne Steel; Gordon Irving; Helen Tuckwell; Jill Kemp; Jan Stephens; Sandra Scott and Ann Dean. The Committee was wished well by Denis Petkovich (Director), Chairman of the Meeting. In March we proposed a return trip to The Fiddler for a ‘St Patrick’s Day Dinner’. Unfortunately this was cancelled due to lack of support. In April, we enjoyed a day in the country with a coach tour to the Yarramalong Valley, the hinterland of the north coast, a lovely part of the country. This will be followed by a “Mother’s Day Lunch” in the month of May, always tastefully done. In June, an interesting day learning that ‘rubbish is not wasted’ but usable. This definitely is recommended as a day of learning at the recyclers “Kimbriki”. Come and enjoy the year with great company and enjoyable and interesting day trips. COMMUNITY NEWS Tathra Bush Fires - $50,000 donation to Mayoral Appeal Fund In the aftermath of the devastating Tathra bushfires that destroyed numerous homes in the far south coast seaside town, the Club’s Board agreed to donate $50,000 on behalf of Club Members to the Mayoral Appeal Fund to help the local population affected by the disaster. The NSW Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Andrew Constance, whose constituency includes the Tathra region, visited Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club in April and accepted the donation on behalf of the Tathra community devastated by the bushfires.

Ryde Hospital - $21,000 Ryde Hospital has been able to further upgrade its medical equipment thanks to a $21,000 donation from Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. The Club recently donated $21,000 for a new video laryngoscope for their Critical Care Unit, which enables faster and easier access for the nurses and doctors to patients with airways emergencies. Last year the Club donated $50,000 for a new operation traction table and in 2016, donated more than $50,000 for a portable ultrasound machine.

Holy Cross Rhinos New Lighting - $90,000 Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club is proud to report on a significant community donation for the installation of new lighting for training fields at Holy Cross College. The Club donated $90,000 to The Holy Cross Rhinos JRFC toward the procurement and installation cost as well as facilitating/assisting with a grant application through the NSW Government, which provided an additional $30,000. (Thanks also to Mr Anthony Roberts, MP Member for Lane Cove. for his support with the grant application). These funds allowed a hard working Rhinos Committee to garner support from their parent base and the local community and combined with the ongoing support and approval of Holy Cross College a great new community facility has been provided. The new lights replaced the existing lights (installed by Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club / Football Club around 40 years ago) which had well and truly reached their ‘use by date’. The old lights had a maximum lux (lighting level) of 6.5 compared to a new maximum lighting level of 200. The new lights include computer-controlled technology using LED lights and provide a significant improvement to the Rhinos Junior League in terms of being able to maximise the

use of the training fields in winter but also in terms of overall safety. The new lighting will provide a great community benefit for at least the next generation and the Board of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club is proud to have contributed to this project on behalf of club members. Footnote: The Leagues Club also facilitated and assisted with a grant application for Dundas Shamrocks for new lighting for training fields at St Pats Dundas. The NSW Government through their local member, Mr Geoff Lee MP for Parramatta, approved a grant of $20,000 and Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club has also approved additional funding of nearly $40,000. Dundas Shamrocks are working with St Pats College regarding approval and hopefully these new lights will be up and running for season 2019.
Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club general manager, Chris McCarthy, said he was glad the club’s donation could make a difference to their local hospital. “Ryde Hospital has been an important part of our community for the last century, and we want to assist in ensuring it continues to proivide that great service by helping pay for these important facilities, which ultimately assists Club Members and their families,” Mr McCarthy said.

Ryde-Eastwood Hawks Team Launch 2018 The 2018 season launch was held at the Leagues Club on Sunday 25 March. The event was well-attended by players and their families, introducing all five teams and coaches. A good time was had by all. Five players, both male and female, were selected to display the new Ryde-Eastwood Hawks playing strip, which was well-received by all.

Ryde-Eastwood Hawks Making History The Ryde-Eastwood Hawks’ first female rugby league side was launched in April 2018, creating Ryde-Eastwood Hawks history. Our Hawks got off to a ‘flying’ start on 8 April, taking out Marrickville RSL in a 14-10 thriller.

Tigers NRL Auckland Trip Winners Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club members, Cecilia and Ramon Quizon, are pictured here on 7 April enjoying the Wests Tigers corporate hospitality in Auckland. The lucky couple won our NRL promotion for a long weekend away in Auckland to watch the Tigers vs. The Storm. The Tigers eventually ran out 11-10 winners in a nail biting game. The Swim School proudly celebrates its 20TH YEAR in operation at the Fitness Edge. We have taught thousands of pupils of all ages in that time, preparing them in all aspects of water safety. The photo above, is a trip down memory lane from ‘many moons’ ago! Babies & Pre-School Classes These classes are held from Monday to Friday between 11am and 1pm. There are limited Preschool positions on Saturdays. All Instructors on these classes are qualified in Austswim Infant & Pre-school Aquatics.
Adult classes These classes are held on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning. Beginner classes are for members who are not confident to Swim with their faces in the water, or just want some tips to improve their skills.
Pre-schoolers’ safest option is to attend classes consistently. Our indoor facility makes this a great place to learn to swim, a skill for life, all year round.

School-Age Learn to Swim Classes The classes cater for all school ages and abilities. The focus for younger children is on safety and gaining confidence; from there we develop all swimming strokes.
Our office hours during term time are: Monday – Friday: 10am – 6pm Saturday: 8am – 1.15pm
Our consistent swimmers move on to Dolphins, Marlin and Squads. While the main focus in these levels is still correct technique, speed and racing skills are also developed. Places in these classes are very limited and are subject to an assessment of new swimmers’ ability and available classes.
The Fitness Edge Swim School offers a safe, friendly and encouraging environment for people of all ages and abilities. Our youngest students are six months of age and our most senior member is in their 70s. It’s never too late to learn the life skill of swimming. All staff at The Fitness Edge are Austswim Qualified and all hold current CPR certification.
“Learning to swim has many benefits for our children. It’s great for their health and well being, it enhances their self- esteem and importantly teaches them a respect for water.
