PRESIDENT’S REPORT

WESTS TIGERS STATE CUP RUGBY LEAGUE

Dear Member, By the time that you read this report two important occasions will have concluded. I refer firstly to our celebration of Easter and the importance of this event to the Christian community, and I hope that all members were able to share this weekend with family and friends. The second occasion was Anzac Day. This year was the 99th year since this event took place, and in so doing created a tradition that exists to the present day in our great country and also in New Zealand. It is also a day when all of our community pays tribute to all those men and women who served our country in times of conflict up to the present day. It is to all these people whose sacrifices have helped make Australia the great nation it is, and that we say, “Lest We Forget.” On the club front, with the financial year drawing to a close, it is pleasing to report that our Club is again trading extremely well and should return another good result for the 2013-2014 year. Members will be pleased to see the addition of the second lift in operation in the car park, which should ensure there is always at least one lift in operation at all times. The development at Hawks on Second Ave is still with our local Council for approval of a Development Application. The approval process will take some months but should be finalised in the second half of 2014. Once this issue is finalised, the Board will then be in a position to determine in which direction to proceed. On the industry front, it appears that with the change of Government at the Federal level the many issues raised over the previous years will at last be resolved with amendments being put forward to solve these areas to the satisfaction of all concerned. The Adam Gardiner Fund, of which our Club is the major sponsor, will hold a Sportsmen’s Lunch on the day of the second State Of Origin match (18th June) at our Club and members are invited to form a party and attend. A host of former S.O.O. greats will be in attendance at the event to relate their experiences. Full details are listed inside this Journal for those interested parties.

Season 2014 is now well underway and the Wests Tigers State Cup team has started extremely well with wins in four of their first five matches to date. Coach Paul Fletcher has a strong squad to work with and is hopeful that barring any unforeseen happenings these players can go on and be a force in the competition. Many matches this season will be played in front of the N.R.L. fixtures and this should help many of the younger members of the team gain experience in front of larger crowds that they would normally not encounter in this particular competition. All fixtures are posted on the Leagues Club notice board in the foyer each week. Results to date are as follows:V

PRESENTATION EVENINGS

Every second Monday a guest photographer will come to our meeting, and present to us an aspect of photography that they are very experienced in. These presentations give us many lifelong experiences that these photographers have acquired. COMPETITION NIGHTS

Every fourth Monday is our competition night. Our images are set up for all to see and a judge is invited to cast their expert eye on our photos. The judge then shares comments and awards are given for recognised photographic qualities seen in these photos. DIGITAL EVENINGS

Every third Monday evening we come together to learn about how to enhance our photos, using such photo editing programmes as Photoshop. These evenings are always beneficial and provide us with the opportunity to learn wonderful photo enhancements. CLUB OUTINGS

Throughout the year, outings are arranged to allow members to come together and take photos in settings or places that they may not otherwise travel to. Such outings allowed us to experience night photography, visit St. Ives Wildlife Reserve, and the opportunity to encounter the Goulburn Railway Museum. CHRISTMAS DINNER AND AWARDS NIGHT

In December we come together for our annual Christmas Dinner. At the Dinner, with family and friends, we can again enjoy many of the photos that were taken throughout the year. CHESS CLUB

The club’s 43rd annual general meeting was held on Wednesday 29th January, and the following officers were elected for 2014: President – Les Mikolajczyk; Vice-president – Bill Gletsos; Treasurer – Greig Edwards; Secretary – Rob Watson. In February we held our annual Rapid Championship tournament (25 minutes flat), which was won by Donato Mallari on 8/9, 1½ points clear of Rob Watson in 2nd place and 2 points ahead of Arthur Huynh, Lorenzo Escalante and Steven Liu in 3rd place on 6/9. The U1600 division was won by Luke McKee on 5½/9. The Club Championship Preliminary round-robin tournament is at the halfway point, with the following leaders: Group A – Arthur Huynh (4/4); Group B – Chris Ball (4½/5); Group C – Brenton Yum (4½/5). On 2 April, the club was treated to a lecture by Ian Rogers, Australia’s first (and strongest so far) grandmaster. We had a good turnout to see Ian give an informative

THE FISHING CLUB

The summer months have proved to be good for fishing with our February outing one of our best days on record with a total of 108 fish being caught for a total weight of 56.7kgs. Eight king fish were caught on the day, each weighing 1.9kg. Our records show that we’ve only caught four king fish in the past 12 years. As all the fish were the same size we held a draw for the biggest fish prize and Gary was the heaviest bag winner with 8.5kg. Our trip on 23rd March returned 56 fish weighing in at 23kg, which was much less exciting than poor February outing. Our 30th March outing was a very good day weather wise with a reasonable catch of 89 fish weighing in at 35.08kg. Michael bagged a personal best Mowong at 2.16kg. Our Annual Presentation night was held on 28th March in the club’s Golden Hawk Chinese restaurant with 34 members and partners attending. Our patron and Club President, Keith Aggett presented the trophies. The Keith Aggett Fisherman of the Year trophy went to Steve Adamson (pictured above), who caught a 6kg snapper. Michael Cheng won the LJ Hayes trophy for the heaviest weight of fish at 52.5kg. A very pleasant night and good food was had by all. Fishing trips – the first Sunday of most months. GOLF CLUB

The season has started again in the heat of Cabramatta. It appears this course is a favourite for the girls. A-grade winner Ulla Wood and B-grade Kaye Henderson. Runners-up on the day were Steve White, A-grade, after a long absence (which didn’t seem to have too much impact on his golf) and the ever consistent there or thereabouts, Slava Sokolov, B-grade. Penrith was our first Medal round, with congratulations to Henry Urbanski, A-grade and Yuri Popov, B-grade. Runner-up prizes

OUR INTERNAL CLUBS were awarded to Steve Ferns, A-grade and Billy Chick B-grade. Fox Hills hosted the first round of the Stableford trophy and poor Tony Campbell was in the clubhouse, quietly confident in taking out the A-grade prize with a massive 45 points only to be beaten by Valery P. with 47 points. B-Grade saw a tie with Steve Jeffery beating Peter Lau on count back. Lynwood was a wet day but that didn’t bother Greg Webber and Keith Chan who won, with Tony Tedesco and Kaye Henderson runners-up. The medal winners at Richmond were Alan Henderson, A-grade and Keith Chan, B-grade. Runners up prizes went to Robert Wood, A-grade and Alex Sokolov, B-grade. A windy and gloomy Blackheath hosted the second round of the Stableford trophy, with congratulations to Steve Jeffery (must have been the need to keep his head down) winning the day with Billy Chick runner-up. Luckily we were all in the car and on our way home before the wet weather hit. Bexley was a medal round, with congratulations to Robert Wood, A-grade, and Eric Goh, B-grade, and runners up John Nilan, A-grade and Natalia P., B-grade, both on count back. Shot of the day or luck of the day goes to Billy Chick on the last hole; he hit his club perfectly and over shot the green, landed in the car park, the ball bounced along for a couple of minutes and didn’t manage to hit a single car! At our recent AGM the following committee was elected for 2014: President Claire Grebert. We welcome the new members to the committee and thank those from the previous committee that did not stand for re-election. The Thursday night bowlers recently enjoyed a pleasant meal in the club dining room. Many thanks to Sidney and his staff for their excellent menu and service. Several of our bowlers continue to compete in State Championships throughout the year and we wish them well. New members are always welcome to join our friendly social bowls club. SENIORS CLUB

I hope everyone has now settled into 2014 and are keeping healthy. We are still enjoying our monthly walks (strolls), however, as the weather becomes more inclement we sometimes have to cancel these, which thankfully we do not have to do with our bus trips. We have recently (in March) had a guided tour of Joadja Creek in the Southern Highlands,

year and a few days away twice a year. In May we are booked to have our annual Mother’s Day Lunch, which is always very well attended. A game of Solo (cards) is played at the Club every Thursday at 1.30p.m. and if you are not sure on how to play, Merrilyn is always on hand to give help and advice. We meet twice a month on the first and third Thursday at 11am in the Function Rooms at the Club. Our joining fee is $5 and all Seniors are welcome so come along and join us. At the time of writing we are just entering the 3rd round of the autumn competition. This comp we have 3 teams competing (Division 6, Division 7, Division 10). The current positions are Division 6 (1st) Division 7 (4th) and Division 10 (5th). Good luck to all players competing, hope you all do well. The Squash Club recently held its AGM at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and elected the committee for the upcoming year. Congratulations go to President: Ernie Speed, Secretary: Bev Speed, and Treasurer John Stapley. It was great to see so many at the meeting, certainly our biggest turn out for a while. TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB

Hi Members. Well, 2014 has started off well having had two successful trips. First we went to Towradgi and then Picton, and although the weather was suspect members managed to enjoy their games. As with last year numbers have been down again, which in turn reflects on the future survival of the Travelling Bowls Club. We really need your support on these outings! Our next trip is to Umina Bowling Club on 22nd June and we really look forward to your participation. Dress code for this event is bowls uniform. TRAVEL CLUB

Our Christmas function at the Club was again a great success. In January we enjoyed our members’ company at Wings Restaurant at Eastwood Rugby Club. In February we cruised round the harbour and enjoyed lunch onboard. In March we visited the Kurrajong Radio Museum, which our members found most interesting and informative, followed by a delicious lunch. And in April we ventured on a 6-day trip to Jindabyne with daily trips in the locale. In May we will celebrate with our Mother’s Day Luncheon at the club, and in June we head off to Ryde Catering College for a sumptuous meal. In July we head to Mount Victoria for Xmas in July at The Manor House. Monthly meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 2.00pm. KIDS’Corner SAY “Hi” TO OUR FISH In the Club’s foyer since 1989, the fish tank has survived three major renovations and the fish have also survived some traumas, including one instance when all but 20cm of water was pumped out of the tank overnight. The Fish Tank continues to be a great attraction for both adults and children. However, it is the children, in particular the small children, who get the greatest delight out of the Fish Tank.

We are a family-friendly swim school offering a broad range of lessons from 6 months of age up to adults, as well as catering for swimmers with special needs. Our success is demonstrated through the high calibre of our coaches and instructors, who not only strive to get the best out of each of their swimmers but have fun while doing so.

Adult classes are held during the day midweek and also on Saturdays.

Generally, The Fitness Edge Swim School operates within the Public School term. We do hold lessons on pupil free days, but not on public holidays. All our instructors are Austswim qualified and we pride ourselves on our teamwork, excellent teaching methods, our outstanding reputation within the community and the high level of success we have experienced within the swimming industry. The continual support and guidance we offer our families and our staff helps us to remain a swim school with a personal and caring approach while keeping our focus on water education and safety for all. Babies & Preschool classes are held Monday to Friday from 11am-1pm and to cater for all our working mums and dads. We also offer preschool classes on a Saturday morning from 8am until 12pm. Our School Age Learn to Swim classes are by far the most popular with classes held Monday to Friday from 3.30-5pm and also on Saturday mornings from 8am until 12pm. SPECIAL NEEDS CLASSES We also offer special needs classes for our swimmers that may require extra care and specialised teaching. Where possible we try and place our special swimmers

These intensive classes are charged at our normal class rate to ensure the children get the best opportunity to learn to swim, but without an added financial burden on parents. For further enquiries on this aspect of our swim school please contact Jo or Leanne at the swim school office on 9808 7617. There is limited availability but we do try and assist in placing your child where we can. OTHER CLASSES Our more serious swimmers move onto Dolphins, Mini Squads and Squads. While the main focus in these levels is still correct technique speed, strength and racing skills are also developed. Not forgetting all our adult swimmers out there who have yet to master the art of swimming, or who wish to do some fine tuning!

To encourage all our swimmers to showcase their swimming skills The Fitness Edge has its own Swim Club. This is a parent-based club and offers our swimmers invaluable race experience in a comfortable environment. Home-based carnivals are generally held on the first Friday of each month, starting at 5.30pm. PRIVATE HEALTH FUNDS & SWIM SCHOOL FEE REBATES Many of our memberâ€™s do not realise that they may be able to claim their swim school fees through their private health insurance. Claims are dependent on your level of coverage and the fund that you are covered by. Why not give your health fund a call and see if you are eligible. If you are, please come and see us in the office and we will provide you with written receipts to take to your insurer to claim.
