CEO’S REPORT

Hi to all in our Ryde-Eastwood family.

Dear Member

I would like to bring everyone up to date as to where your club is and how our future plans are travelling. I look back at my twenty-four years as a Board member of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Cub with some pride, and marvel at the changes our club has witnessed in that time.

I would like to formally welcome all members to Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, both loyal members through the club’s 60-year history and those more recent members as part of the local community and our Club.

I look at the economic and social value the club has delivered to our community such as taxes, local job generation and community infrastructure developed and maintained for people of all ages, just to name a few examples. In particular, I am proud of representing your club at very recent donations of $40,000 to Ryde Hospital for specialised equipment; $25,000 of a $50,000 donation to the Adam Gardiner Fund; and our highly successful “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” with all money raised going to the Cancer Council. I would also like to make special mention of both our staff and local member for Ryde, Victor Dominello, for their enthusiastic participation in this event, with Victor making special mention of this event in his address to Parliament. To quote Victor: “I find myself fortunate to be part of a community so endowed with generosity.” Be proud Ryde-Eastwood family, these donations are only a small part of our total contribution to our community, which is far in excess of our mandatory requirements. Details of actual donations are displayed via our electronic noticeboards.

We are now half way through 2019 and it has been a challenging but rewarding six months for the Board, Management and Staff at Ryde-Eastwood. Over the last six months, there has been a strong management focus to ensure we are creating an appropriate offering for both our current and future club members and visitors. Our aim is to provide great experiences for all in the Ryde-Eastwood family that come to enjoy the benefits of the Club. There has been a conscious effort by Board and Management to ensure that we remain a solid foundation at the heart of the community and are committed to serving our club members and the community as a whole. We have been actively involved in key donations to community partners such as Ryde Hospital, and we continue to look for opportunities to become involved in charitable events where we can provide benefits for others in need.

Looking toward our future, we (the Board and Management) realise that changes have to be made if we are to maintain the same level of contribution to our community. The Board and Management understand that the demand for traditional gaming products is waning, in addition to the changing demographics in our local area. As I write this article, the club’s CEO and I are preparing to meet with Council to discuss our plans for the diversification of our resources. We need to plan now for our future with a larger club premises so that we are able to continue to be a very important part of our community. As I stated in the last journal, we are “shovel ready” to start the purchase of the laneway surrounding our club and also to start our Seniors Living proposal. Further news on these projects will be communicated to members as it happens.

We have placed much importance in finding ways to meet the needs of all our members and guests through various promotions, entertainment and an overall value offering to ensure you enjoy your visit to Ryde-Eastwood. As mentioned by Club President, Jim McClymont, we have been working on key projects that we are confident will contribute to the ongoing success of the club. We continue to work on our Seniors Housing project as well as finalising the Laneway procurement with Council to consolidate our ‘footprint’ in the local community. In the second half of the year, we will continue work on our master planning to achieve our aim of encapsulating a community hub of facilities and services for all to enjoy.

Remember members, we are only able to continue the club’s journey as a valuable member of our community with your continued support and participation. We actively seek your assistance by encouraging you and your friends and family, as members, to continue providing your valuable feedback to us, which will enable us to make informed decisions for the future of your club. Also, please ask any of our courteous staff members how you may link with us on social media so you can keep abreast of what is happening in “your club”.

I would like to remind members to renew your membership so that you may continue to receive the great benefits your club offers. There are some great member offers and promotions coming up at the Club. Check the following journal pages for times and dates. Finally, I would like to thank all members for being part of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Family and hope to see you soon at the club.

Before signing off, I would like to congratulate Director Jack King on his recent awarding of the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for services to Rugby League. Jack boasts a seventy-year service to Rugby League, commencing with Leichhardt Wanderers in 1950, a Director of Ryde-Eastwood since 1964, a long-term President of Ryde-Eastwood Football Club, and many life memberships and service awards along the way. FOOTBALL REPORT Dear Member Welcome to our third edition of the Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club report for 2019. Firstly, we would like to congratulate Leagues Club director and long-standing life member of the Football Club, Jack King, on receiving The Order of Australia Medal, OAM, for service to Rugby League, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2019. Well done Jack! RYDE-EASTWOOD COMBINED RUGBY LEAGUE SYDNEY SHIELD – 12-TEAM COMP The Sydney Shield team is currently sitting on 18 points in 5th position. With eight games to go, they will need to win four of those games to finish in the top 4. With a great camaraderie within the team, being in contention for a semi-final place is an excellent result thus far for the team’s inaugural season. SYDNEY-WIDE BASED COMPETITION LADY HAWKS WOMEN’S OPEN DIVISION 7-TEAM COMPETITION Our Lady Hawks currently have 25 points and are sitting in second place. Rain-affected weather conditions have disrupted the team’s preparation but camaraderie in the camp is strong and based on performances to date, they stand a great chance of winning this competition. U/18 DIV 1 GOLD – 5-TEAM COMPETITION Our boys are currently undefeated on 20 points and in top spot. The team has not played many games due to

a late start to the competition down to representative football commitments and abandoned matches due to inclement weather. Despite this disruption, we feel that the boys stand a great chance of winning the competition. U/18 DIV 2 SILVER – 11-TEAM COMPETITION Our boys are currently on 11 points, running in 10th position, and with only four games remaining they are out of semi-final contention. However, these young men have put in some sterling performances this season and enjoyed playing the game with their mates on the field. U/20 DIV 1 RED – 6-TEAM COMPETITION In 3rd position on 24 points, this side has only lost one game and with a few more wins it could finish as high as second on the ladder. Come semi-finals time, we feel that the boys should secure a spot in the semis. U/20 DIV 2 WHITE Until 30 June, the team was playing in Division 1. Currently in 4th position with 4 games to go, they need to win games to seriously contend for a semi-final position. As with the U/18 Silver, this group of young men plays for mateship and enjoyment of the game. U/23 – 6-TEAM COMPETITION Currently on 16 points and in 5th position, our team still has the chance of making the semi-finals. We wish the team and coach all the best in their remaining games.

AFTER-GAME FUNCTIONS All functions have been a great success. Our final aftergame function will be held at the club on Sunday 11 August. We welcome all to attend. PLAYER PATHWAYS We congratulate Alex Seyfarth on his position in the top 30 players for the Wests Tigers NRL Club, highlighting the pathway to success we create here at the Hawks. It’s been a busy year so far for the Ryde-Eastwood family and our community partners. We started the year supporting the World’s Greatest Shave and March Charge with both causes united in raising over $6,500 for the Leukaemia Foundation and Cancer Council respectively. In May, the Club then organised a Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea, which raised another fantastic sum of $6,000. The event was hosted in the Heritage Function Centre and in attendance was local state member, Victor Dominello. See some photos from the event below. Mr Dominello kindly praised the Ryde-Eastwood event in the Parliament of NSW (see image above of Private Members Statement 30th May 2019).

In June, members of the Club’s Board and management dropped by Ryde Hospital to present a $40,000 cheque to the hospital’s general manager, Heather Gough. The funds will go towards the purchase of an ultrasound machine, which will be used in the Emergency Department’s heart monitoring suite. Heather said the new ultrasound machine will make a huge difference for the care of patients who come through the emergency department. The Club is proud to provide its ongoing support.

ADAM GARDINER FUND

SPORTSMEN CHARITY LUNCHEON Thank you to all those who attended the charity luncheon for the Adam Gardiner Fund, held at the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Heritage Function centre on Friday 28 June. It was packed to capacity as everybody enjoyed a wonderful lunch. We are proud to announce that the net proceeds for the day will be donated to the Institute for Immunology and Research at Westmead Hospital to support the Amyloidosis Clinic. In addition to this, Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club donated a further $25,000 as part of our 5-year commitment to the Westmead Clinic and the AGF. The Fitness Edge Swim School offers a safe, friendly and encouraging environment for people of all ages and abilities. Our youngest students are six months of age and our most senior member is in their 70s. It’s never too late to learn the life skill of swimming. All staff at The Fitness Edge are Austswim Qualified and all hold current CPR certification. Babies and Preschool classes are held Monday to Friday between 11am and 1pm. There are limited Preschool positions on Saturdays. All Instructors on these classes are qualified in Austswim Infant & Preschool Aquatics. School Age Learn to swim classes are by far the most popular. The classes cater for all school ages and abilities. The focus for younger children is not only on safety but also on gaining confidence. From there we develop all swimming strokes. Our more serious swimmers move onto Pre-Squads and Squads. While the main focus in these levels in still correct technique, we also develop speed and racing skills. Places in these classes are very limited and are subject to an assessment of a new swimmer’s ability and also available classes. Adult classes are held on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning. We have two levels – Beginners’ and Intermediate. Beginner classes are for members who are not confident to swim with their faces in the water. Intermediate classes are for members who can swim but who also want to improve their technique. BE READY FOR SAFE SWIMMING THIS SUMMER The Key to swimming lessons is consistency. Children that swim throughout the year progress more than children who don’t swim through winter. Swimming is fun and a skill for life. So make sure you are on time for your lessons! AUGUST SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2019

INTERNAL CLUBS CAMERA CLUB This year the Camera Club has increased its membership. We have entered many and varied images in external competitions, we didn’t win but the competition was good. Our competitions each month are well supported by our members. We call on Federation of Camera Club judges to critique our images and give feedback on our members’ images, which are well-received. We have a number of members who have excelled in their photography when entering individual competitions and we are lucky to have them as members to mentor us. The last outing the club went on was to the Blue Mountains where we took great photos of the beautiful locations around the mountains. Another outing is scheduled to the Bicentennial Park where our nature photographers will shine. You can view our images on the website at www.pbase.com/relccc. CHESS CLUB The Club Championship Preliminary roundrobin tournament is complete, with the following players progressing to the round robin finals tournament in October and November: Group A – Arthur Huynh and Suranga Seneviratne; Group B – Donato Mallari and Michael Anderson; Group C – Chris Ball and Ben Sindel. Handicap winners in each division were: Group A – Jason Pan; Group B – Michael Wang; Group C – Norm Greenwood. There is no interclub ‘Grade Matches’ competition this year so our club is running a few internal events instead. The first of those was a Winter Rapid, which was won by Shane Dibley with Dennis Wan in second place and third place shared by Bill Gletsos, Ben Sindel and Rob Watson; the U1600 section was won by Vince Chiara. We are currently running a 7-round Winter Swiss (time control 90 minutes + 10 seconds increment). As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. EUCHRE CLUB The Euchre Club extends an invitation and warm welcome to all Euchre players to come along and join us on Wednesday nights in the Willandra Room at 7.20pm. THE FISHING CLUB Our April meeting fishing trip with 12 members on board was greeted with good weather and low seas. Once again, Sam Sundar was the man to beat with 22 fish caught and also with the biggest fish - a 1.1kg morwong. Sam also took home two bottles of RELC red wine. This

is the third consecutive trip this year that he has won. The total catch for the day was 59 fish at 24.8kg. The May trip was cancelled due to bad weather and a 3 to 4 metre swell. The June outing with 13 members attending saw threatening rain clouds and a 3 metre swell and choppy seas. The results were mixed with poor catches, except again, Sam Sundar, with the heaviest bag of 11 fish weighing in at 5.5kg. The biggest fish was caught by George Varga, a 1.05kg morwong. Sam and George both took home a bottle of RELC red wine. This was Sam’s fourth win in a row with prizes. Congratulations Sam. The fishing club organises monthly deepsea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Watsons Bay, for their Winter Special was enjoyed by everyone, and for a change the weather was perfect! In June we went to see Fairground Follies where we had a marvellous, if cold, demonstration of these wonderful musical organs of a bygone era. We have many more bus trips planned for the rest of the year. We also have a weekly game of Solo Whist for those interested in cards. We meet on the first and third Thursday at 11am in the function rooms at the Club, and on the third Thursday meeting we have a guest speaker; in June we had three gentlemen who gave a wonderful demonstration of how Morse code worked and the story of its inventor. Our fee is only $5 per calendar year to join and everyone is welcome. On the first Monday of the month our wonderful walkers see a lot of Sydney and its surrounds, so do come along and join us. GOLF CLUB Penrith was home to the third round of the Stableford trophy, the winner on the day Natalia P. with Dave McCullum runner-up. Windsor was round 1 of the Championships and a Medal, the A Grade winner Steve Ferns and B Grade, John Nilan. Cabramatta hosted a Stableford with Colin Cope beating Slava Sokolov. It also hosted the Match play with Warren and Ulla progressing to the final. Richmond was a wet morning with a few brave souls in attendance, the winner on the day Steve Ferns and Warren Savy runner-up. The Pairs Championships was held at Dunheved with Slava and Billy Chick taking out the honours three shots ahead of runners-up, Steve Ferns and Greg Webber. TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB Our last trip was to Picton Bowling Club on Sunday 16 June where we had a glorious sunny morning with a nice morning tea and lunch. But then in the afternoon it started to rain quite heavily and we had to leave early. On the way home we enjoyed a tiki tour through Thirroul and then Homebush Bay, where many of us have not been to since 2000. Our next outing is to Davistown RSL club on Sunday 4 August, and I am sure we will be welcomed and treated nicely like we have been on all our visits. Then on Sunday 22 September we are off to Woonona Bowling club for another fun day of Bowls. Hoping everyone has recovered from any winter ailments that they might have suffered. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun, and as the saying goes, “The more the merrier”. The bus leaves RydeEastwood Leagues Club at 9.30am. INDOOR BOWLS Congratulations to our Patron, Mr Jack King, for his recent award of the OAM. A really great achievement. So far this year the Wednesday ladies’ group has enjoyed celebrating Easter, Mother’s Day and Christmas-in-July lunches. While the Thursday night mixed group has enjoyed an annual dinner and Christmas-in-July dinner. Many thanks to Sidney and his staff for their excellent catering. We continue to have good attendances at our bowls sessions and have recently welcomed several new members. TRAVEL CLUB Our June trip was to the “Museum of Transport of Yesteryear”, featuring transport that used to operate in our streets 40 years ago or more. Buses and Trams of all shapes and sizes, some corridor, others foot plate and prison units. There were many memories among the exhibits. Some members remembered when public transport was a penny a trip – Terminus to Terminus! July was a great month with a “Christmas in July Luncheon” held at ‘The Chalet’ in the Blue Mountains. We celebrated the typical Yulefest with Christmas decorations, Bon Bons and Carols. Then a comfortable drive back to the Club full of good cheer. In August we intend to visit the “Powerhouse Museum” and see all those exhibits full of interesting gadgets and ideas. It should be an informative day.
