Dear Members, Fall is now upon us and many of the RV dealers that I have spoken to are putting the finishing touches on their business and purchase plans for the New Year. I know that there may be some uncertainty about the Canadian dollar and the concern over potential tariffs, but it is still a great time to be in the RV Business. Our recent market assessment study indicates that consumers are still very enthusiastic about the RV lifestyle. There are just over 2.1 million households in Canada (approximately 15%) who own an RV which is slightly up from previous studies. The trend is going in the right direction! The RVDA of Canada held its last board meeting in August. This year, we included a strategic planning session in conjunction with the board meeting. This is a very important event for us as the planning session enabled the national board to develop strategic objectives to carry our association forward for the next few years. RVDA of Canada Strategic Goals 2019 – 2021 Advocacy The RVDA of Canada is actively consulted in political, public, and industry policy matters, and is proactive in advocating policy that is in the common interest of RV Dealers across Canada. Research The RVDA of Canada provides authoritative RV retail industry intelligence to our members and on behalf of our members – including but not limited to retail sales, payroll survey, dollar volumes, inventory levels, comparative information within the industry. Education The RVDA of Canada facilitates a variety of training, recruitment, HR, and educational programs covering all areas of an RV Dealership for RV Dealers across Canada. Membership Services & Benefits The RVDA of Canada provides services and benefits to assist RV Dealers through access to endorsed cost-saving programs and by providing RV Dealers with resources relevant to their business activities.

Collaboration The RVDA of Canada works with the RV manufacturers to address issues of mutual concern and works with other groups in the RV industry on identified issues of common concern. Association Excellence The RVDA of Canada is a relevant national organization which continues to develop and revise its policies and procedures, develop its organizational structure and capacity, and increase its resources to meet its changing needs. Please note that the 25th Annual Dealer Satisfaction Index (DSI) survey will launch in late October this year. Please look for an email from the association with a link to the survey. This later timeframe allows us to promote dealer participation at our 2018 RVDA Convention/Expo. The response deadline will be in early 2019 and the presentation of the awards will take place at the new RVIA event, RVX, in March 2019. This timeline should work better for dealers. If you’re planning on attending this year’s convention/expo in Las Vegas, make sure you join us for our annual meeting. The RVDA of Canada’s annual meeting, sponsored by iA-SAL / iA-VAG (Industrial Alliance), will feature David Allison a Marketing Expert, Author & Pioneer of Valuegraphics. David Allison’s research has led to a discovery that will change the way you work, and the way you think about the world. This message will be my last to you as RVDA of Canada chairman of the Board. I am very pleased that I have had the chance to meet with a great number of you over the course of the last few years. Thank you for the opportunity to have served. I would encourage all of you to volunteer in this association, the knowledge gain that I have personally received has far outweighed the time that I have given. Have a great fall season.

Jean-François Lussier, Chairman of the Board RVDA of Canada

9 Business Security Tips for Closing Time submitted by Reza Kamrani Account Representative, Associations

You or your employees can fall into a routine as you shut down your business at the end of every day. That’s why it’s so important to make sure you’re taking all of the precautions you can to help prevent fires and crime when you’re not around. Theft may seem like only a distant possibility, but organized retail crime costs Canadians over $4.6 billion a year, according to statistics from Calgary police. It’s especially important to take precautions when leaving your business for a long weekend or a vacation, when no one will be checking up on it for some time. That’s why it’s key to have a list of steps to take before leaving for the night, to help ensure that your business is in the same condition in the morning as when you left it. The list should also be shared with your employees, so they know exactly what to do when you’re not there. Here are some tips on how to help keep your business safe when you lock up for the night. Turn on storefront and sales area overnight lights If lights inside your business are turned on, it may discourage thieves from entering. It may also help ensure that if anyone does enter your store, they will be clearly visible from the street. To make it even easier to see anyone inside your business (and the disorder they may be causing) you can clear the front windows of any posters or merchandise so there’s an unobstructed view. Keep exterior lights turned on A well-lit exterior also discourages any unwanted guests from approaching your business. It’s important to make sure you haven’t just illuminated the front of your business, but also the side and back entrances too. If there are any burnt-out bulbs, those should be replaced as quickly as possible. Make sure all customers have left the premises It might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s very important to check that no customers are still inside the building before you close up. You or your employees should check back rooms, stockrooms, and change rooms to ensure no one is left with access to your property after the doors have been locked.

Turn off equipment Before leaving, make sure that you or an employee have done a walkthrough of the business and checked off all items that need to be powered off overnight. This list will include different items depending on your business, but could encompass portable heaters, decorative lights, cooking appliances, and other heating equipment. Ensuring that all of these devices are switched off could help prevent any fires from igniting. Store flammables and combustibles in secure locations In a further attempt to stop any fires from catching, make sure that any flammables or combustibles have been moved away from heating appliances in property storage containers. These containers should also be labelled clearly. Lock away cash register and other valuables Follow a detailed procedure when handling cash at the end of the night. Some tips for how to handle your cash register and other valuables include taking a different route each time when making nightly deposits, leaving an empty and unlocked cash register, and not leaving cash or valuables in rooms that are accessible by windows or external doors. Secure all equipment and stock Before leaving for the night, it’s a good idea to move any excess stock to a locked or secure spot in the store. You could also move stock away from windows and doors to make it more difficult for thieves to attempt a smash and grab. Steps like these may seem small and insignificant, but they could mean the difference between someone robbing your business and being dissuaded from doing so.

Secure and lock all doors and windows On top of securing your equipment and stock, it’s important to make sure that all of your doors and windows are locked, so no burglars can easily enter the premises. Include this item on your list for employees, and be sure to also lock back entrances. Turn on your security system And last but not least, you need to ensure your security system is turned on before leaving the premises. Your security system could take a number of forms, as options range from silent alarms to video surveillance. Surveillance systems are useful, as they can discourage thieves from entering your business and also alert security teams when a robbery is in progress. If you follow these tips, you can rest easy at night knowing you’ve taken the right steps to help prevent fires and theft at your business. But sometimes all the preparation in the world isn’t enough to stop bad things from happening. That’s where insurance comes in. © Federated Insurance Company of Canada. All rights reserved. Canadian retail sales statistics are now available for both motorized and towable recreational vehicles. These statistics will allow dealers to better manage the inventory on their lot by knowing which units are selling in their area, which price points are attracting buyers as well as knowing the local trends affecting their marketplace. The RV retail sales statistics compiled by Statistical Surveys Inc. are the result of matching manufacturer VIN numbers with RV registrations. The RVDA of Canada endorsement agreement includes free access for national monthly figures only, for members only. 2018-2019 NTP-STAG Canada RV Technician Bursary We are ready to accept applications for the 2018-2019 NTP-STAG Canada RV Technician Bursary! A total of 11 bursaries valued at $1,000 and one bursary valued at $1,500 are up for grabs to eligible RV technicians in all Canadian Provinces and Territories. NTP-STAG Canada is once again sponsoring this bursary program. Since 1962, NTP-Stag has been serving the RV industry by distributing the best in parts, supplies and accessories to the dealer partners. When asked why NTP-STAG Canada continue its support for this program, Rob Edwards, Director of Sales, believes that: The Canadian RV industry continues to grow by attracting many new, first time families looking to experience the RV lifestyle. Our industry needs to keep up with this growing demand by hiring and retaining more qualified RV service technicians. The RV service technician plays a very important role in keeping the families happy and safe by ensuring their RVs are road-ready. Although the bursary program is a sizeable investment for us, the decision to continue our support is a relatively easy one to make. There is a genuine sense of excitement for us to see the reach of this program and the impact it has made on the recipients. Most importantly, the Rob Edwards (left) receives ORVDA supplier of the year award. award has instilled a great sense of pride in everyone involved. NTP-Stag Canada is deeply committed to giving back to the industry by investing in such programs that will provide assistance to technicians while welcoming new apprentices into our industry. The bursaries are awarded to apprentices and technicians that have completed the necessary training. For apprentices enrolled in formal apprenticeship programs, there are opportunities to apply for the bursary for each level completed. For technicians that have many years of experience under their belt and successfully challenged the Red Seal exam, they too are encouraged to apply for this bursary. Eligible programs are to be completed between August 1, 2018 and May 31, 2019. Application deadline is June 1, 2019. Should You Prioritize Your RV Service Customers? By Don Reed Are some service customers more special than Should sales customers taking delivery stand at head of the line while customers who didn't buy their at your store wait at the very end? Or should all be treated equally? Before you answer, here's a story you might want to A large RV dealer asked me to visit his store to see if I could help him stop the bleeding in his service and operations — a net loss for the year of almost $600,000! had never before seen an RV dealership lose that kind money in service and parts. It was puzzling, since dealer's facility had a prime location at an state exit on the west coast of Florida, with an of parking, an service facility, and plenty room for The number one problem turned out to be the himself and his policy regarding which customers priority in the service Every customer entered the was greeted with a large sign

Attention Service Customers Our priority for servicing RVs is: First

: New RV delivery customers

Second

: Used RV delivery customers

Third

: Warranty customers who bought their RV here

Fourth

: Retail customers who bought their RV here

Fifth

: Warranty and retail customers who bought their RV elsewhere

my evaluation, asked for the productivity report and was told they didn't measure vidual techs' flat-rate performance. I asked for a review the schedule and was told they didn't use preferring to simply tell everyone to "come on in." review their dispatch process and was told the techs went to the repair-order stack and picked their next job. I asked for a work in process schedule, and they that?" Finally, I asked for a special-order schedule; you guessed it they didn't use

Of course result was chaos, since they didn't have the training, or staffing level to accommodate the I asked the dealer to please take down the sign start treating all customers the same. After much he reluctantly agreed. Then asked him to tell his managers to stay out of the service so we install a production schedule and implement special -order parts tracking; hire a and at least one lot (techs were sible for moving inventory); and hire one more service advisor. The service manager and advisors were thrilled, the techs were ready to party hard, since they were going be getting a pay raise with our new "flat rate" plan paid them more when their productivity that their productivity was averaging less 50 percent and explained that the new goal would be It took 30 days to train everyone on the new and put them into practice.
