Dear Members, This spring, the RVDA of Canada in partnership with the CRVA released its updated Economic Impact of the Canadian RV industry. The purpose was to update the estimate of the level of economic activity supported by the RV industry in Canada. The sector has grown considerably since our last study in 2011. The findings show that not only does RVing continue to be an exceptional way to travel, but it also has a considerable impact on the Canadian economy. The study showcased that in 2017 the RV sector generated an estimated 66,000 jobs and delivered $4.7 billion in added value to the Canadian economy from an initial expenditure of $6.1 billion.
This year’s convention will include several new presenters as well as recognized RV industry training experts. Wednesday’s educational sessions include a workshop from millennial expert Gabrielle Bosche. Gabrielle specializes in demystifying the millennial generation and motivating millennials to do and be more. On the Wednesday afternoon, we will also be featuring a panel session of industry and legal experts discussing warranty and product liability issues and the best way to handle these challenges from a dealer’s perspective. Visit www.rvda.org/convention and RVDA of America’s mobile app for up to date workshop schedule and information on confirmed workshops and speakers.
I would like to thank all those that took the time to respond to the 2017 national payroll survey; results have been emailed or mailed to all those who participated. Our association undertakes this annual national payroll survey to assess how many people are employed in this industry and most importantly, the significant number of dollars involved through payrolls volumes. These stats help support the economic impact our industry has on the country as a whole. Dealers who responded have gotten a report on the average retail shop rate by province, annual payroll by province, as well as, an expanded list of average salaries for dealership staff positions; including benefits.
For those of you that are golfers, the RVDA of Alberta will be hosting a Golf Tournament on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Royal Links Golf Club in Las Vegas, prior to the convention. A registration form can be found inside this newsletter. Inside this issue as well, you will find a nomination form for the 2018 Canadian RV Dealer of the Year. If you know of a dealer who has shown great dedication to the RV industry and lifestyle, to their customers, employees and peers and has been committed to their community, then make sure you send in a nomination form so that they can receive the recognition they deserve. It does not have to be a dealer in your province; you can nominate anyone in Canada. For further details on the criteria see page 15 of this newsletter.
Remember to register for the RV Dealers Convention/ Expo being held in Las Vegas from November 5 – 9, 2018. Our dealer Early-bird registration rate expires at Have a great summer! the end of June so make sure you have one person registered to lock in your rate!

RV Industry Launches Major Initiative to Increase Number of Credentialed RV Technicians and Focus on Constant Improvement of Customer Service Metrics
Formation of RV Technical Institute Signifies RV Industry’s Lasting Commitment to Increasing the Number of RV Technicians and Creating Benchmarking to Track Customer Service On June 7, the RV Industry Association (RVIA) Board of Directors approved a comprehensive strategic plan and multi-million-dollar investment to address RV owner satisfaction by creating a supporting foundation, the RV Technical Institute (RVTI), to solve the RV industry’s shortage of trained technicians and to implement metrics to track the RV customer experience. In making this announcement, the RV Industry Association is taking a leadership role in closely monitoring RV owner satisfaction, driving members and partners to focus on reducing repair event cycle times (RECT), and aggressively working to improve the industry’s shortage of trained RV technicians. Many industries monitor customer service experiences through the RECT metric. RECT is impacted by various factors including but not limited to causes such as lack of parts information, inconsistent part stocking programs, delivery options and technician training. The goal of this project is to position .

(con’t from page 3…….) RECT as a key performance indicator for customer service to every segment of the RV industry. The newly formed RVTI will establish a headquarters and training facility in the Elkhart, Indiana area, where it will implement a comprehensive RECT reduction initiative as well as launch an aggressive recruitment campaign to attract new technicians into the RV industry Critical to this plan is the immediate creation of world-class RV technician training curriculum. Curriculum is at the heart of training, credentialing, and providing proficient RV technicians to the RV industry. The RVTI plan calls for taking the best of the current industry training curriculum and making significant investment in improving these training offers by utilizing industry subject matter experts in conjunction with professional curriculum developers and technical writers. The new program will feature digital textbooks, PowerPoint decks, video and other modern teaching tools. The curriculum will serve as the framework for instructing new and existing RV technicians. The process of building this new curriculum has already begun. “In building the plan, we were determined to end nearly three decades of partially-funded half measures to solve one of the industry’s biggest service challenges,” said RV Industry Association President Frank Hugelmeyer. “We worked closely with representatives from all key industry stakeholder groups and conducted over six months of thorough data-driven planning to arrive at this point. The strategy calls for an unprecedented investment not just in tech recruitment and training, but in repair event cycle time reduction initiatives beyond technicians. I want to commend the RV Dealers Association (RVDA) for their guidance and involvement in the process, and for their support of this ambitious plan.” “With the industry now selling more than half a million RVs annually, increasing service efficiency across the supply chain is critical,” said RVDA President Phil Ingrassia. “This is an ambitious plan that will help provide the support that dealers and RV technicians require to service today’s RV products.” “This truly is a watershed moment for the RV industry, one that illustrates pulling the industry together always creates the best solution to challenges we face,” said RV industry Association Chairman Bob Parish. “By implementing a robust recruiting, marketing, and placement plan, the Elkhart area RV technician recruitment and training facility will successfully compete with other technical industry
June 2018
Page 5
(con’t from page 4…….) training centers for attracting new talent by using state of the art technology to deliver world class educational material in a hands-on training environment. We are heavily investing in technician development and benchmarking our effort against customer satisfaction, the ultimate indicator of success.” “Not only are RVDA and RVIA actively working on a parts improvement initiative but this new RVTI plan will make critical investments in technical education as well, including RECT performance benchmarks to measure the industry’s progress,” said RVDA Chairman of the Board Tim Wegge of Burlington RV Superstore in Sturtevant, WI.
By establishing its headquarters in the Elkhart, Indiana area – the heart of the RV industry – subject matter experts and trainers from RV component suppliers and OEMs will be able to easily provide practical hands-on training to technicians. These newly recruited technicians will attend a tech ‘boot camp’ at RVTI then be placed at partnering RV dealerships and service facilities all over the country. The facility will also provide training and accreditation for existing RV service technicians. In addition to its headquarters in Indiana, RVTI will also establish a network of regional training partners that will be accredited to deliver training to existing technicians on a local or regional basis. Current and existing training venues, as well as new training providers, will be asked to partner with RVTI to provide standardized, centrally managed training. Several of the industry’s leading providers of current service training have already agreed to join this new standardized training initiative. By accrediting regional partners to deliver curriculum, RVTI will deliver standardized training to technicians as close to their service center as possible. Following the proof of concept established by the Florida RV Trade Association, the RV Industry Association’s TnT Registered Training class, Camping World and other industry leaders, regional partners will conduct hands-on training and assessments that rely on practical assessments of skill and proficiency rather than written tests. The initial $10 million-dollar seed fund will set up the RVTI training center and kick-off an aggressive three-year implementation of technician training accreditation, curriculum and credentialing, delivery, marketing and tech recruiting/ placement as well as repair event cycle time reduction. The RV Industry Association will provide the initial $5 million-dollar investment to establish RVTI. In concert with this investment, Go RVing, the RV industry’s national consumer outreach campaign managed by the RV Industry Association and the RV Dealers Association, will provide an investment match. As part of this initiative, the Go RVing investment match was approved by both the RV Industry Association and RV Dealers Association Boards of Directors. The leadership of the RV Industry Association will immediately form a task force to help its efforts to secure the proper location for RVTI, as well as forming a search committee to assist in recruiting an executive director to lead the RVTI enterprise.

High Level of engagement at the 2018 Skills Canada National Competition How do you measure success at a trade show? By booth traffic? By how many contacts you have made? By the number of inquiries about your product or service?
You likely have been asked how you qualify a lead and their level of interest when they come into your dealership. Your measurement will likely also include your key performance indicators (KPIs) across your social media platforms. There are many tools and metrics available to you. But, how do you measure awareness and future participation in the trade? Yes, there are KPIs for measuring awareness as well but what about the human factor? This year marked our sixth participation in the Skills Canada National Competition. Each year, we see the entire competition grow bigger in scale with more exhibitors and visitors, which leads to more digital impressions earned. Your association and your fellow dealer and supplier members take great pride in representing you to promote career opportunities in the RV industry. We continue to see many of the same exhibitors that also see great value in their participation as a Try-A-Trade partner in this event. This year, approximately 2,500 people visited our booth. The RV display, smell of freshly baked cookie using a multipurpose Microwave / convection oven and of course, the hands-on activity, all contributed to a greater exposure for the RV service technician

We continue to hear from many visitors that they have never heard of the RV service technician trade and how they had no idea a single trade could encompass so many different trades. Picture the excitement your customers show when they’re picking up their first RV and planning their first outing. We see the same smile and expression on people’s faces when they hear about the number of skills required for this trade, the versatility, the indoor working environment, the idea of working on something that brings joy to others and truly becoming a Jack or Jill of all trades is priceless. As the Canadian RV industry continue to flourish and more people purchase and upgrade their RVs, more skilled men and women are needed to keep up with the demand. Visit the RV Careers Facebook page for more photos from this event. The 2019 Skills Canada National Competition will be held in Halifax, NS from May 28 to 29. Participation in this event is made possible by the following sponsors and supporters:

Chargeback fraud is on the rise; is your business ready? At some point, most businesses will experience a chargeback from one of their customers. Most disputes are for legitimate concerns and can be worked out between the merchant and customer. For example, the customer didn’t recognize the merchant name on their credit card statement, or they saw a duplicate charge, or they didn’t receive the product or service purchased. There are simple lessons here for businesses: - Make sure your business name — and not your numbered company, for example — is showing on statements for clarity; - Deal with your refunds in a timely manner; - Communicate shipping and delivery dates accurately.
Chargeback fraud on the rise An increasing number of chargebacks, however, are the result of fraud, where consumers fraudulently use the chargeback process to secure a refund. This is a problem that is only going to worsen due to the number of data breaches that have compromised millions of card holders. It is critical that you work with a payment processor who will guide you through important fraud prevention steps, as winning disputes after the fact can be challenging even when fraud was committed. At Baseline, we also recognize that you need to strike the proper balance between security and ease of commerce. With that in mind, here are some of our best practices for fraud prevention.
Card present transactions
DO NOT allow customers to swipe and sign. If their chip-and-PIN card isn’t working, ask for another form of payment. You will never win a chargeback in a scenario where your customer has swiped and signed, as the signature is not considered proof of purchase. (If you have U.S. or foreign customers, you will still encounter some chip-and-sign scenarios and that is okay. Use of the chip card is what’s important here). If the customer asks, or tries, to manually enter their card number into your payment terminal, request another form of payment. If you must enter a card present transaction manually, call your processor first and ask to validate the card over the phone.
June 2018
Page 25
Card not present transactions DO use a virtual terminal instead of a traditional physical terminal. This will allow you to record and verify cardholder information in a fully secure way. DO collect CVV codes on all transactions. This will be mandatory for all Canadian merchants as of Oct. 14 but you should be doing so already. DO use your processor’s Address Verification Service (AVS) for large transactions or for customers you don’t have an existing relationship with. DO have the customer sign and send back an invoice, including a description of the goods or services. Also have the customer confirm delivery. DO trust your instincts. If you are every skeptical about a transaction — perhaps the customer is trying to hurry you through the transaction, or they are making odd demands about shipping timelines or shipping address, call your processor before the transaction is completed and ask to validate the card. Asking the customer for a copy of their Driver’s License for confirmation and record can also be effective in scaring off scammers.
The right environment The goal is to set up a clear, easily understood and appropriately vigorous chargeback prevention system, and then to communicate it effectively to your entire staff. It's also a good idea to explain to your employees exactly why these steps are being taken. A team member who understands why they're performing these actions is more likely to feel a sense of responsibility for protecting the company. Employees should feel comfortable trusting their instincts and digging a little deeper with customers who raise red flags. Finally, as members of the RVDA, you have full access to our team at Baseline Processing. In addition to the guidance we provide on chargeback fraud prevention, we are on your side in the event of a chargeback, which gives you the best chance of winning that dispute. Please give us a call. We'll be more than happy to help you design and implement a system that protects you from chargeback fraud without hindering your ability to do business.
