Dear Members, It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of another RV selling season. The many dealers that I’ve had the opportunity to speak with throughout the country are reporting increased sales this year. This bodes well for our industry’s continued success and most businesses are optimistic about what lies on the road ahead. As I sit down to write this message, I realize, with sadness, that this will be my final message to you in the role of Chairman. The past 2 years have gone remarkably quickly. It has truly been an enriching experience that has left me feeling fortunate to have had the opportunity to represent you. As association leaders, we hope to bring about positive change in some small way; to further our industry and to enable our members to flourish through education, partnerships and the development of best practices. But through it all, I realize that with my involvement, I too have gained valuable knowledge and great friendships. Thank you. I’m sure that many of you have been following the Federal Government’s proposed changes to the Small Business tax structure. I wanted to let you know that we have been very active in the consultation process and we are concerned that the Government’s proposed changes to the tax planning structure of small private corporations will impede economic growth. The association made a submission to the Department of Finance. Overall the new proposed rules will increase the overall tax cost to private corporations, shareholders and their family members if enacted as proposed. The rules will have a negative impact on growth and investment in dealerships. This will hurt local economies and hurt job growth. The RVDA strongly encourages the Government to reconsider the proposed tax approach. On October 4th, we had the privilege of presenting our pre-budget submission to the Federal Government’s Finance Committee. For the upcoming 2018 budget, the RVDA of Canada is asking that the Federal Government to increase support for skilled workers in the RV industry. Due to the geographic constraints of the existing RV apprenticeship programs, we recommended

that the Government of Canada create an Apprenticeship Travel Grant that could be used by those who are required to travel in order to undertake an apprenticeship training program. This grant should be targeted towards those enrolled in programs that are not offered in their city, town or province. We also asked the Government to provide targeted and dedicated investment in camping and RV infrastructure in Canada’s National Parks. Upgrades in infrastructure are essential if we want to be able to ensure the future of this industry and make it more accessible to all Canadians. Investments in infrastructure will play a critical role in the overall contributions of the tourism industry to future economic development and prosperity. I look forward to seeing many of you at our convention in Las Vegas. Please also make sure you join us for our Annual Meeting on the Wednesday morning. This year, we will feature Michelle Dagnino, Generation Y Engagement Expert. This is the place to be if you want to learn more about working with Millennials and how to manage a Multi-Generation Workforce. We will also be unveiling the 2017 RV Dealer of the Year in a presentation by Camping Canada’s RV Lifestyle Magazine and Camping Canada’s Dealer News. To Eleonore, Anita and Amee, a huge shout out of appreciation for all that is accomplished via their efforts. I am very proud of the commitment and energy each of them brings to the success of the RVDA of Canada. In closing, I would like to share these final thoughts. I have had the pleasure of working with and learning from my provincial and national boards and members like you. Each one of these individuals has contributed to the growth, development and strength of our associations of today. I would compare these members to the musicians in an orchestra: Each musician to be heard, yet much stronger as a group. We need you to assist with orchestrating the future of the RV industry in Canada. Join a committee. Represent your provincial association. Let your voice trumpet loudly. Thank you for the rewarding experience and an exceptional opportunity! Warm regards, Sam Parks, Chairman of the Board RVDA of Canada

Canadian retail sales statistics are now available for both motorized and towable recreational vehicles. These statistics will allow dealers to better manage the inventory on their lot by knowing which units are selling in their area, which price points are attracting buyers as well as knowing the local trends affecting their marketplace. The RV retail sales statistics compiled by Statistical Surveys Inc. are the result of matching manufacturer VIN numbers with RV registrations. The RVDA of Canada endorsement agreement includes free access for national monthly figures only, for members only. Going forward, these figures will be published in the RVDA of Canada bimonthly newsletter and archived at the “RV Statistics / National RV Sales” link on the member side of www.rvda.ca. Data Protection on Business Trips by Alex Callahan, DIRECTOR, CLIENT STRATEGY & BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT As a business traveller, you are most concerned about bringing your passport, exchanging currency and packing your luggage efficiently and you may forget an important security measure – backing up and securing your work data. While the Internet has made it a lot easier to attend virtual meetings with global offices, or communicate with off-shore vendors, there are still instances when you’ll be required to travel for business. And if you are like most business travellers, your laptop and smartphone will always be close at hand.
3. Ensure sensitive information is protected with adequate encryption: Many enterprises will not provide employees with a laptop without full disk encryption today. Full disk encryption ensures that, if the laptop is stolen, the thief only gets to have the hardware and not the data stored on it. If you do not have full disk encryption, you can still use commercial and open source tools to encrypt files or folders that are most sensitive to you, your company and your clients.
Here are a few things you can do to help protect your data while you are travelling for business.
4. Ensure anti-virus and firewall software is installed and up-to-date:
1. Backup before you leave:
This applies to both your laptop computer as well as your smartphone. There are a number of good mobile security and anti-virus apps available for mobile devices. Where possible, ensure you have enabled your local firewall in the operating system on your computer. This is another layer of defence to help resist attackers from connecting to your computer.
If you are like most of us, you keep “everything” on your laptop. So if you have not backed up your data in a while, you may want to do so before you leave on your trip. Your business automatically backs up server files? That’s great – but keep in mind that the files you have on your desktop may not be included. You can upload them to the server before you go or store them on an external drive and lock it in your desk drawer. 2. Consider ensuring your laptop has a virtual private network (VPN) installed: A VPN creates a secure connection between your local computer and a remote computer (i.e. your company’s network) via the Internet. Any information that is sent while you are using a VPN connection is encrypted, so even if an outsider intercepts information, it cannot be read.
5. Never leave your laptop or mobile device unattended: Not even if you’re setting it down “just for a second.” Thousands of laptops and mobile devices are lost or stolen at airports each year alone – do not let yours be one of them. If you’re staying at a hotel and you are heading out for dinner, store your laptop out of sight in your hotel room or in your room safe if you can fit it.

Data Protection on Business Trips by Alex Callahan 6. Use password protection during inactivity time-outs: Whether you are working on a PC, Mac or Linux computer, you can set a screen saver password, which locks your computer whenever you are using the screen saver. Be sure to enable password protection on your mobile devices as well. 7. Make sure your passwords are extra strong: While you should already be using strong passwords, the fact that you are travelling is a good reason to update them. A strong password should be at least eight characters long, should not contain your name or company name (in fact, avoid using any complete words in your password altogether). Make sure it is completely different from your previous password. And finally, use a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. If you have a 4-digit password for your mobile phone, do not use easy combinations like 1234 or 1111. 8. Do not use public Internet connections to do your online banking or shopping: While it might be tempting to take advantage of a coffee shop’s or airport’s free Wi-Fi to catch up on your online banking or to make a quick purchase, these Internet access points are not always trustworthy and may not even be provided by a legitimate business. 9. Switch off your wireless connection when not in use: Your computer will seek out Wi-Fi access points, broadcast all the ones it knows and try to associate with them. Do not make it easier for anyone around you to gather that information. Prevent illicit access to your mobile devices by disabling Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when they are not in use. You can put your phone on airplane mode to disable connectivity altogether.
10. Be aware of your surroundings: Situational awareness is always important for your own safety when travelling. Watch out for that ‘shoulder surfer’ trying to see your smartphone PIN or password. Don’t reveal your company or personal information on your screen if possible by using a privacy screen. Avoid carrying your laptop in dangerous areas or where others aren’t already doing the same. Do not stand out as a target! 11. Research the destination before you go: Should you even be bringing those high tech valuables with you? Consider looking for a means to send the data ahead securely so that it is at your destination when you arrive without risking losing it along the way.

Corporate Card Processing Rebates For many years American companies have had the opportunity to take additional information from their credit card paying Corporate clients in exchange for reduced processing fees. This program, known as Level 2 & 3 Processing, has been so successful in the US that it's coming to Canada. Industry insiders are unsure of the launch date; Q4 2017 and Q1 2018 seem to be popular guesses. One major Processor has already announced plans for a software Beta test whenever the program begins. At this early stage everyone should be checking their merchant statements for Standard Commercial, Standard Purchasing, Standard Infinity Privilege Business and Standard Corporate listings. These card types are expected to enjoy 20 to 60 basis point reductions. If you have a processing Account Manager who's on the ball you can skip this homework assignment. They'll be in touch if the program's a good fit for you.
As the RVDA of Canada's Affinity Partner we've put a hold on contact during the busy summer season. But we'll begin getting in touch again starting in October and you can be sure that all good candidates for Level 2&3 Processing will be identified.

On the Spotlight The other side of the Hall of Famer: Mr. Woody Paylor Congratulations to RV/MH Hall of Famer, Mr. Woody Paylor! The RV/MH Hall of Fame recently made a great leap forward when they enshrined Mr. Woody Paylor of Red Deer, Alberta, Canada in the RV/MH Hall of Fame’s Class of 2017. The induction signaled the beginning of the Hall’s international foundation, recognizing and commending individuals from outside of U.S. Beyond his formidable business acumen, have you ever considered how Mr. Paylor keeps up and handles everything for a successful conclusion? It’s called “Runner’s High”. When those endorphins rush and keep on pumping, the mind can zone out and the body begins to work wonders. Woody Paylor has been marathon racing since he was on his 40s. And since then, he has completed a total of 25 marathons both across Canada and the United States. On top of setting a personal record of 2:52 at the Victoria marathon for the over 50 years of age, there have been hundreds of 3, 5, 10 km, and ½ marathons completed by Woody, in which the majority of these have culminated on the podium. A notable accomplishment for Woody was a half marathon he completed in the southernmost tip of South America, Punta Renas. He completed this half marathon in the morning and then got on a plane that night to complete a second half in Antarctica. Woody states that this was literally an “on top of the world feeling” at the end of the race. In 1992, Woody completed his first Triathlon in Sylvan Lake, finishing at Bower Ponds. Soon after, he qualified for the first time for the Canadian Triathlon Team and competed at the World Championships held in Wellington, New Zealand. Thereafter, he joined and participated alongside the Team in over 75 triathlons in both local and international competition. To clarify, Triathlons consist of a 1500 meters swim, 40 km bike ride and a 10km run. Always looking for more challenges, Woody competed along with the Canadian Duathlon Team (local and international) where; in 2010, he placed as a top Master’s triathlete within Canada. When he engaged in the World Exterra Championships in Maui Hawaii, Woody reached the podium once again, as a world champion in his age group. This time, it was on an open water swim, trail run and mountain bike course.
October 2017
To date, Woody has competed in 16 Ironman Distance races in which he swam 3800 meters, biked 180km and ran 42km. His placement herein qualified him for up to 8 World championships (held in Kona, Hawaii) and partook in 3 of these. Not to mention, his ½ Ironman Distance races, where his enduring energy and vigour continued to reap distinction and yield track records of success beyond question. Appropriately, with all these outstanding achievements, coupled with his passion and great interest in the sports, Woody is the title sponsor for the Woody’s RV Marathon. This event has been running for 17 years, as well as his Woody’s RV Triathlon and Kids of Steel, which has run for 15 years. Suffice to say, Mr. Woody Paylor has not only established himself as a leader in our industry, but also as an exceptional example of what happens when you are totally committed, fully engaged and do what it takes to move forward with excellence. Congratulations Woody on all of your achievements and we look forward to seeing what challenges you embark on next!
