Aswe welcome spring and the emergence of new growth, new blooms, and new beginnings, it is my pleasure to introduce a new initiative at Ruth Eckerd Hall intentionally titled Artmaker of the Year.
The definition of an ‘artmaker’ is simple and straightforward – one who makes art. It doesn’t include any further specifications regarding the artistic genre involved, what mediums and techniques are used, or the size of the finished piece.
Our inaugural recipient embodies the dramatic possibilities of the latter.
A native of St. Petersburg, Derek Donnelly has a personal commitment to shaping the visual landscape of Tampa Bay and our everevolving communities with vibrant, largescale murals stretching from private homes to public institutions, coastal resorts to college campuses, social service organizations to small businesses with clients as varied as Hilton Hotels, the Tampa Bay Rays, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), St. Petersburg College, Major League Baseball (MLB), and Fender Guitars. His work transforms walls into stories conveying not only a stunning aesthetic but a powerful sense of place - the ultimate adornment.
In addition to having his established work featured on membership items and an original commissioned piece unveiled at our annual benefit in April, Derek will receive a year-long exhibit in Ruth Eckerd Hall’s onsite galleries documenting his work and unique creative process. In other words, our walls will celebrate his walls. And the story gets even better, best told in his own words:
