The good ol’ hockey game
Peru
The Rundle Summit Series continues on Friday, February 3 at the Westside Recreation Centre. The annual Staff-Student hockey game looks to be another exciting match as the series is once again all tied up. The puck drops at 1:40, so come out and cheer on your favourite team!
The countdown is on! Less than 70 days until we leave for Peru and every day the anticipation grows. At each meeting the trip seems to become more real as we learn about the various aspects of Peru’s culture, people and history. We are so thrilled that we have this opportunity to go on such an amazing trip. We are excited to volunteer at the school in Peru as well as visit Machu Picchu and the Amazon River. This is going to be the trip of a lifetime and we cannot wait!
Speech Club The Speech Club wrapped up its regular season on Friday, December 9 at Crescent Heights High School. Congratulations to Arijit Lodha, Jaclyn Hiebert, and Elizabeth Church. A special congratulations to Erika Kemp, who won the bronze medal in Poetry reading. It has been a fantastic year, and we are looking forward to Regionals February 10. Thanks again to all the parents who drove and judged – we could not have done it without you.
McLean Creek Profect Grant We have received a $500 grant which will be used to move our grade 7 service learning project forward. The grant is from Project Flow and is given to schools that are making a significant contribution to ensuring our watersheds are sustainable. The grant will be used to create signage out in the McLean Creek off road area.
Gala Gift Baskets

Grade 9 Girls BasketBall The Grade 9 girls basketball team has got off to an outstanding start in December winning all three of their league games beating Glenmore Christian, West Island College and Calgary Christian. The girls have really made themselves the team to beat in our league with these three decisive wins. The team has a busy month of January with four league games and an exhibition game against F.E. Osborne on January 20th. We are also hosting our home tournament on January 13th and 14th and then we are off to a tournament at Medicine Hat High School on January 27th and 28th. The girls have played very well together over the month of December and it will be very exciting to see how they compete in January.
Every year at the Christmas Gala, the senior high takes part in a gift basket raffle fundraiser whereby each TA class puts together a gift basket to raffle off. I know that I am not only speaking on behalf of myself, but rather all of the grade twelve students this year who had the incredible opportunity to travel to Kenya last year, when I say we were absolutely thrilled to hear that the funds raised this year would once again be going to support Mully’s Children’s Family. MCF is a registered charity committed to transforming the lives of orphaned, abandoned and abused children in Africa . We were so blessed to have been able to spend time with staff and children at this incredible organization. We now call them part of our family. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your generous donations over the past two years with all of our fund raisers for this organization. Congratulations to the Rundle College community because this year we raised a record breaking $3,820 for MCF projects in Kenya! Submitted by: Aelita Rozitis
Grade 8 Girls basketball The Grade 8 Girls Basketball team started their season with a bang by winning the championship trophy at their own Rundle College Cobra Cup Pre-Season Tournament. The girls went undefeated beating Strathcona Tweedsmuir, Calgary French School and Trinity Christian to earn their first tournament win. The girls also competed in the Rundle Academy Pre-Season Tournament, taking on teams consisting of many grade 9 players. The team had an excellent showing against their older competition, winning one of the games. The team is looking forward to the many challenges of the basketball season! Santa’s Secret Service
Forty members of our Rundle College community came together to “shop” and sort through thousands of toys destined for needy children this Christmas. This was a family affair and the Salvation Army organizers really appreciated the hard work and positive attitude of all our volunteers. Thanks to all of you who came out.
Our school “adopted” twenty seniors this year so that they will have a Christmas. These seniors are usually identified as having no family to help brighten their holiday, so a gift bag from Santa means a lot to them. Participating classes in the junior and senior high were given information on their senior and then went about filling their wish list. The gifts were warm and caring, and will no doubt bring cheer to the IKEA Christmas Tree elders who receive them. Thanks to all of the classes who particiWe had three different groups pated. working at the IKEA Christmas tree lot this year. These cheerful student volunteers made the buying experience that much more fun, as they helped find the perfect tree and handed out candy to the little ones. The weather was cold, but the hearts were warm and friendly. Proceeds from IKEA tree sales go to the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank.
Spread The Love Our volunteer club made 150 sandwiches which were taken to the Dropin Centre . These sandwiches are sent out with clients who have been able to get work for the day but who cannot afford to buy a fast food lunch. These sandwiches are so much better, anyway!
Dare To Care

When: January 23, 2012 Time: 7:00 – 9:30 pm Location: Rundle College Senior High School – MP room Rundle College Senior High School and our Parent Advisory Council will be hosting a special presentation which will help parents learn about the lives of today’s youth and develop a better understanding of the pressures they face. The presenter is Dwayne Peace, a retired police officer and School Resource Officer. The topics he will address in his presentation are bullying, harassment, stereotypes, teasing, rumours, drugs, depression, suicide, violence and family issues. All Rundle College parents are welcome.

Bullying Awareness Rundle College Jr./Sr. High School is committed to educating and providing proactive resources to our school community on topics related to bullying. During National Bullying Prevention week, Peer Support members provided workshops to grade 7 students on this topic. At these workshops, Peer Support members ran activities and discussion groups in order to reinforce a Dare to Care program goal, namely creating a “caring majority� among our student body. These workshops took place on Wednesday, November 25th in grade 7 Physical Education classes.

TIPS TO DEAL WITH EXAM STRESS Stress is a normal part of life. Some situations, like exams, are more stressful than others. It is what you do about it that makes a difference to your well-being. First, be prepared for the exam. On exam day, here are some tips that can help: Get a good night’s sleep, don’t rush getting to the exam, bring what you need, eat healthy, be confident, slow down while writing and celebrate after you are done! U of Alberta: In order to be considered, students must demonstrate the following: Scholastic Distinction Award: ■ Average of approximately 95%+ in Grades 10, 11 and 12 (projected). ■ Academic reference and essay must be submitted. Entrance Leadership Award: ■ Exceptional leadership qualities: community service and involvement ■ Average of 80% or higher based on Grade 11 and/or Grade 12 final marks Applications can be found on U of Alberta Bear Tracks. The deadline for applications is February 15th.
Transcript Requests: Requests for transcripts can be made to Ms. Moodie. The transcript along with a cover letter outlining your current grades will be provided in a sealed envelope. Once a transcript is picked up from the office, students are required to send them directly to the universities. Please note that each university has their own timelines about when transcripts are required. Typically, they want grades after first semester grades are available (mid Feb.) and one at the end of the year (mid July). Final Transcripts: All institutions outside of Alberta require that a final transcript gets send directly from Alberta Education to their institution in mid July. This request MUST be made through Alberta Education. This can be done at http://www.education.alberta.ca/students/transcripts. aspx.
