Waves on the canal

LAST week we swapped houses with some friends who needed a bungalow in Presteigne for a week and in return we moved to a rather posh town house in the middle of Bath. By a stroke of luck we managed to just miss the 2025 - 250th Anniversary, Jane Austen Festival celebrations (a view not necessarily shared by my partner) and so I was able to concentrate my attentions on Ian Marchant’s latest humdinger The Breaking Wave without having to wear a stupid bonnet.

We take no responsibility for the veracity of the information herein

As you may or may not know Ian has been seriously ill for a while but, nonetheless, was absolutely set on writing this book which had been in gestation ever since Mary, Ian’s producer on various Radio Four shows, suggested the topic for a possible Radio Three essay to be called ‘ Sex Drugs and Village Halls’. Luckily, Radio Three turned down the idea but by then Ian had realized he wanted to write a novel drawing on his own experiences in the music biz, which are many and varied. If you have read any of Ian’s previous books you will know how erudite and packed with information his writing is and Breaking Wave is no exception. However the added fun of this is that the band at the centre of the book is based on three bands Ian sang with in the early eighties – The Mood Index Continuum, The Prime Movers and the National Game and there is an accompanying Soundcloud playlist which means you can hear actual recordings of The Mood Index recorded at the time, as well as lots of other music that gets mentioned in the book.

The story is about a band getting together for one last gig before the central character’s cancer makes playing impossible and as Ian says ‘It is also, beyond all question of doubt, my last book. I am simply not well enough to muster the resources to do it again, and I’ve run out of story’. Ian has always been very open about his cancer diagnosis and the treatment he has been getting and this is reflected in the truthful and straightforward discussion of the main characters illness.

Part of the impetus for writing the book was Ian’s conviction (with which I wholeheartedly agree) that although there are lots of novels about bands they mostly fail to capture the real nitty gritty of pulling the whole thing together, not to mention the endless rehearsing, the arguments and the pure pleasure of writing songs and hearing them played for the first time.

The book jumps around from place to place all the members of the old band having dispersed but a lot of the action takes place around Brighton, Newhaven and Piddinghoe,

but fear not the Borders get a look in with scenes at Whitcot Keysett outside Clun and a flurry of mentions for the Poetry Pharmacy in Bishops Castle. Since I was reading this in Bath I was thinking quite a lot about our mutual friend Chas Ambler, who died in 2015 who I first met while living in Walcot Street. Chas and Ian were the comedy duo, Your Dad, who played loads of gigs in Presteigne, at Sheep Music and also at the tiny Hat Shop restaurant. I love this quote from Ian’s blog about becoming a teenage singer above all to get a girlfriend and to try and sing like Van the Man.

‘The band Van used were called The Caledonian Soul Orchestra’ and they got under my skin too. Yes, guitar, bass, drums, piano, but also a proper horn section and a string quartet. My fantasy band was big, and all its members were girls, in particular all the girls I fancied from school. I can’t remember who played what, but in the end it had eighteen members. Parts of this fantasy came true in 2007 when together with my old musical partner Chas Ambler we did an event in Morecambe called ‘Your Dad in Las Vegas’ where we became the world’s biggest duo, and played with a twenty piece orchestra, several of whom were actual girls.’

While I was exploring Bath’s cycle paths on my bike I visited friends who live on a barge on the Kennet and Avon Canal. Imagine my surprise when I came back to the house to continue reading, only discover that the next chapter was set on a barge on The Kennet and Avon Canal. Was it a secret message from Your Dad?! I highly recommend you buy, beg, steal or borrow a copy of the book which you can order from Ian’s website – ianmarchant.com If you fancy a hilarious You Tube interlude check out Your Dad Elderly Rhymers https://youtu.be/fNOzbDO-HQo?si=V-oV3bK-ynpaV9S_

Well, What Do You Know!

RECENTLY I’ve been dipping my toe into some deep water - Quantum Physics: the world of black holes, expanding universes, gravitational fields. You know the kind of thing. But did you also know that there are scientists, not satisfied with fathoming out the little matter of when and how the earth came into existence, who are trying to discover what was happening BEFORE the Bang...banged? For someone who struggles to remember what he did yesterday, this is off the scale of impressive. Or is it?

The late great humourist, and unacknowledged philosopher, Alan Coren, brings this down to earth with a different sort of bang. Someone had given him a telescope. Yes, a telescope. Night after night, sustained by cheese sandwiches and a bottle of Volnay, he peered at the unimaginable vastness of the universe with its billions of stars, and was overtaken by a feeling of utter insignificance - but not his. No. Theirs.

To my mind, Coren’s comment opens the door to some intriguing questions, which prompt me to embark on a gentle stroll around the subject of this month’s philosophical ramble - KNOWLEDGE.

In my secondary school, a lifetime ago, one of the teachers drilled into us his belief that all knowledge is valuable and - get this - of equal importance. Really? We spent what seemed like a big part of my childhood grappling with some esoteric bits of witchcraft called sines, cosines and tangents. According to him, my ability to manipulate these was essential. He even provided us with a helpful booklet of trigonometric tables. After months of practice I became efficient at producing the correct ‘answers’ to his exercises, but without the slightest understanding of what it all meant, or what this arcane wizardry was actually for, in real life, that is. At the time, sines and cosines seemed so remote from my personal experience that they were like Alan Coren’s distant galaxies - utterly insignificant.

So, we might start our ramble by asking if some bits of knowledge are more important than others. And if so, on what criteria? Why might this bit of knowledge matter more than some other bit?

Admittedly it’s not difficult to identify areas of knowing that are clearly of interest to everyone - medical knowledge, for instance. But some knowledge seems so obscure as to be in a different category altogether - for example, knowledge about the philosophical ideas of early Greek thinkers, or how houses were constructed in the Neolithic period. Of what possible use might such knowledge be for us today? We need to remember, however, that the notion of utility is more complex than might at first appear.

Iris Murdoch reminds us that to be involved in serious thinking - she was writing about philosophical thinking - is

to be involved in an ongoing conversation that will have begun centuries ago and will continue into the future. We are merely one small link in a very long chain. What we think now is the product of what our forebears thought and a legacy for generations to come. As the man said, ‘Time present and time past are both perhaps present in time future, and time future contained in time past’.

An even more basic question, however, is what it means to claim that we ‘know’ something in the first place.

Clearly, human history provides a sobering catalogue of examples of ‘knowledge’ that turned out to be wrong. We know now that the earth isn’t flat like a plate, that the sun doesn’t revolve around the earth, and that the Egyptian pyramids weren’t built by visiting aliens. Today’s facts have a disconcerting habit of becoming tomorrow’s myths.

Thinking about facts leads us very quickly to questions about truth. If something is true for you, must it not also be true for all people? Otherwise it’s opinion This distinction between fact and opinion ought to make us extremely cautious when listening to anyone who has a vested interest in telling us ‘the truth’ - politicians, religious leaders, journalists, supermarkets, and so on.

A further point of interest is that sometimes the absence of knowledge can be far more useful, far more exciting even, than knowledge itself. The hinterland between knowing and not knowing can be a place where creativity flourishes, a place where further thinking is positively encouraged and needed. A place where curiosity is king.

Finally we need to remind ourselves that knowledge is, of itself, amoral. Neither good not bad. You might know how to break into a parked car. Clearly a bad action, but good if done to rescue a trapped dog.

T.S. Eliot asks a pertinent question: ‘Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?’ If ever there was a time when such a question needed to be asked, that time is surely now.

ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER (15) – 162MINS

Writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s ( Inherent Vice, Liquorice Pizza) tremendous thriller chronicles the hey-day and then the seething recession of underground revolutionaries, French 75, and with cities under near marshal law and large-scale immigrant expulsions in what could easily pass for today’s America. Bombing banks and freeing those held in deportation camps, Leonardo DiCaprio plays explosives expert Bob Ferguson and lover of black radical feminist Perfidia (Teyana Taylor). But after a raid gone wrong, Perfidia is caught and then raped by neo-facist Colonel Lockjaw (Sean Penn, frighteningly convincing). The consequence is a baby daughter which Ferguson ends up raising on his own as French 75 ceases manoeuvres but 16 years later the teenage Willa (Chase Infiniti) lives off-grid with her now boozed-up, stoner father until Lockjaw and his brutal cohort seek them out. A gripping, often visually stunning third act of cat and mouse, retribution and redemption ensues, also involving Benicio Del Toro’s underground railroader, the sum total being a film which you really, really must see. The directorial/writing debut by actor Harris Dickenson, best known as Nicole Kidman’s manipulative love interest in Baby Girl, is somewhat in the Ken Loach school of gritty urban melodrama, but none the worse for that. Starring Frank Dillane (Boisie in T.V’s Joan) as Mike, the titular lying and thieving wastrel, Dickenson’s script follows his randomly violent descent firstly to prison and then his decidedly uneven attempts to go straight. Mike can be charming and funny but his moods turn on a sixpence and the handsome, charismatic Dillane invests him with an underlying vulnerability that keeps us guessing the film’s outcome. However there are a couple of mysterious, almost psychedelic detours that slightly obscure the issues and the crux of his clearly damaged upbringing. Along the way are also some winning performances especially from Megan Northam as his wannabe girlfriend, Diane Axford as his world-weary probation officer and an uncredited Dickenson as a fellow ner’erdowell.

MR Pernickety’s Guide to Eating in Ludlow was published sixteen years ago; it prompted grumpiness among some victuallers and a bit of a stir in the media – at least, in the Shropshire Star. The paper offered a reward to anyone who could unmask this mystery critic with his frank and forthright views. A week later, a picture of a man appeared on the front page, claiming to portray the critic. Few trusted its authenticity.

When inadequate eateries subsequently closed, Mr Pernickety was sometimes blamed for his unflattering reviews, although it was usually because they were rotten at what they did that they foundered. Besides, when each of those restaurants in Ludlow deemed worthy of a Star from M.Michelin also folded up their tents, they did so despite the lavish praise heaped upon them in Mr P’s Guide. These places had buckled under the pressure of supporting a Michelin Star. Paying for this required a volume of trade greater than could be provided by a small market town. The departure of those outstanding restaurants undoubtedly dealt a blow to Ludlow, its traders and residents – a loss, compounded by the complacency of the town’s Food Festival. The organisers of this once unique event appear not to understand, like any insightful middle-aged person, if they wish to carry on fascinating people and drawing crowds, they need to re-invent themselves from time to time, presenting an entirely new face and personality to a fickle public.

At the same time, The Feathers – one of the jewels in Ludlow’s architectural crown – is run by people who understand neither the town nor the building itself. It is a depressing experience just to go in and see the awfulness of the interior design. Meanwhile, the town’s empty shops and inns stand out like bad teeth in a rueful smile. Vast online retailers trade from sites bearing a fraction of the business rates born by small High Street retailers who are also victims of greedy landlords holding out for top rents, when they should offer young, creative entrepreneurs a chance to show what they could do to brighten up the town.

Nevertheless, despite these setbacks, Ludlow remains one of Britain’s most attractive and welcoming historic towns, enjoyed by a vast number of tourists. As a result, there are some outstanding shops, pubs and restaurants who benefit from these visitors as well as loyal locals.

A good example of a successful local hostelry is The Queens in Lower Galdeford. This freehold pub is owned and has been run by the same family for twenty-five years. It has had love and imagination creatively lavished on it during that time. When Mr Pernickety went there to dine with his friend, the Innovative Chef (who shared lunch with him at L’Ecole des Amis last spring) he was strongly aware of the owners’ understanding that the most important thing in their pub is the customer, and everything is done with that in mind. The plain timber country furniture is easy on the eye and in good order, the interior is fresh and

relaxed. The convivial and unpretentious bar is a place that encourages the casual encounter for which English pubs exist. Mr P felt at home at once with a choice of four splendid local ales and he also found a few affable acquaintances before he greeted his guest. With his customary dilatoriness, Mr P hadn’t booked a table (it was, after all, a Tuesday evening in October) but there wasn’t a table to be found in the lofty dining area, so he and the IC were comfortably accommodated in the bar.

The Queens was busy, even in these straitened times, which perhaps is what allows them to offer a wide range of options on their menu. The Innovative Chef decided that the choice was pleasingly retro, throwing up a few favourites from the 1980s, but not “Pub Grub” by any means. Rather, it offered interesting ingredients, treatments and flavours, all colourfully presented. Mr P agreed there was an engaging nostalgia to some of the dishes. He started with King Prawns and Chilli; to his relief and saving his trousers from a sprinkling of sauces and prawn legs, the crustaceans were ready peeled, and delicious. The IC relished the retro-ness of his deep-fried wedges of Brie, although he felt his rocket salad was a little underdressed.

Mr P drank a good glass of grown-up Argentinian Cabernet Sauvignon with his Butterfly Cajun Chicken – a dish with a strong pleasing flavour. The IC following the 80s theme had ordered a rare sirloin steak with a peppercorn sauce. He was kind enough to pass a chunk of both to his host, who disposed of them with pleasure.

Neither critic could fault their main courses. Mr P wished he had the capacity to sample one of the promising Vegan or Veggie options on offer.

The IC decided that his bulk precluded him from sampling a dessert. Mr P, with no such restrictions, had a big helping of real home-made Apple and Raisin Crumble with custard providing an additional dash of nostalgia sauce.

He left The Queens happy, if a little full, pleased that the pub delivers exactly what a diner might expect, and that it’s doing a great trade as a result.

Tory Fury as Kemi Ditches Climate Policy

CAN anyone recall the names of any recent Tory party leaders? A quick way of jogging the memory is to look up senior conservatives who have been rubbishing Kemi Badenoch’s recent statements on climate change.

For those who don’t follow politics, Kemi Badenoch is the current Tory party leader. She has pledged to repeal the Climate Change Act, if the Tories win the next election. I accept that some recent Tory leaders have been easily forgettable. And we need not dwell on the PM whose shelf life turned out to be somewhat less than that of a lettuce.

Over close to two decades, there’s been little disagreement between the major parties over the pressing need to combat climate change. Under legislation which was passed by all but a handful of MPs in 2008, carbon budgets are set for many years, indeed decades into the future. Now Kemi Badenoch plans to “scrap those failed targets”.

Climate science groups have reacted with a mixture of disbelief and fury. The UK programme director for the think tank E3G, Ed Matthew, has said: “This is a new low point for Kemi Badenoch as she blows up the Conservative party’s credibility for protecting nature and the climate in her quest to ape the far-right policies of Nigel Farage. This announcement is anti-science, anti-growth, anti-health and anti-nature.”

Industry bodies have also shown the kind of dismay they usually reserve for any party except the Tories. The Confederation of British Industry reckons there are one million people in green jobs in the UK today. It says that green industries were the major economic success story of the last year, growing by 10% - much faster than the economy overall.

Globally, says the CBI, green industries were the second fastest growing sector. And climate experts remind us that the UK’s legally binding target of reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 is not arbitrary.

The target – endorsed by Theresa May when she was prime minister – is based on the key UK science body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. May and other top Tories have issued a stream of invective against Badenoch, of the kind they kind they normally reserve for a bare-knuckle fight over the leadership.

May has said the U-turn on climate change would be a “retrograde” step, upending seventeen years of consensus between the UK’s main political parties and the scientific community.

Another former Tory PM, Alok Sharma, is clearly unhappy with Badenoch’s climate lurch. He has told

the Guardian, “The path to a prosperous, secure, and electable future for the Conservative party lies in building on our achievements, not abandoning them.”

Quality newspapers have made it clear they think Badenoch is running a big risk. And they clearly see her as an imitator of Nigel Farage and his Reform Party.

A BBC News report also seems mystified by Badenoch’s logic. It says her climate gamble doesn’t add up. “Repealing the 2008 Climate Change Act would not spare Britain costs — it would only make adaptation and mitigation more expensive.”

It says, “The big hole in Badenoch’s approach is that she seems to envisage a world in which Britain stops spending money on decarbonisation, but does not have to spend any cash on mitigation and adaptation. This world does not exist.”

Meanwhile The Times, not normally a flag-waver for Labour or its policies, says that the Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, was greeted as almost a hero at the party conference.

“Wherever you wandered around… the energy secretary seemed present. His fringe events were rammed with grassroots members eager to hear about his green agenda.”

I must apologise for plunging you back into the party conference season and reminding you of these recent disjointed bits of Conservative party history. I blame the current Tory leader. It is all her fault, for limbering up to throw Britain’s environmental policies under the bus, with little or no warning.

But, of course, when Badenoch makes headlines with her climate u-turn, there is a very big caveat. She will do all this IF...she ever gets elected. And this policy swerve is hardly likely to help her, given that Britain’s current direction of travel on climate change is supported by rather more voters than those who oppose it.
