WHAT IS RUI UNIVERSITY?

RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

Dear Residents, Family, and Guests,

At RUI University, we believe lifelong learning should inspire not only the mind, but also joy, connection, and community. This summer, we invite you to embrace a true #SummerStateOfMind a season designed to spark curiosity, celebrate experience, and bring people together through meaningful conversation and engaging discovery

Featuring The Vintage Advantage, our Summer 2026 series celebrates the wisdom and perspective that enrich every stage of life through thought-provoking masterclasses, wellness conversations, historical exploration, and community-centered events designed to educate, inspire, and connect

Throughout the season, residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community can look forward to special monthly themes and celebrations designed to inspire learning and connection.

In June, we explore Facing Alzheimer’s: Knowledge, Compassion & Hope, featuring conversations surrounding Alzheimer’s research, memory care, and the science of empathy while recognizing Father’s Day, Juneteenth, and the spirit of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Do What You Love to End ALZ® initiative.

In July, we celebrate The Intellectual Legacy of History: Patterns, Power & Progress, examining revolutions, political transformation, and the great thinkers who shaped society while honoring America’s 250th birthday and the spirit of the Fourth of July

In August, we focus on The Science of Well-Being: Designing a Life of Purpose, Vitality & Connection, exploring the neurobiology of energy, wellness, and human connection while also enjoying our annual Bistro Trivia Tournament and the final celebrations of summer.

We invite residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community to join us throughout the summer as we celebrate learning, culture, wellness, and togetherness. These shared experiences strengthen connections across generations and make lifelong learning even more rewarding.

Our summer classes and events are open to all Whether you are returning to RUI University or joining us for the very first time, we welcome you to experience a summer filled with insight, inspiration, and celebration.

Josh Urban spotlights the leading ladies of the 1960's music scene These iconic women not only shaped the sound of a generation but also influenced the cultural and social fabric of the time. With their powerful voices and undeniable talent, they broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of female artists.

Anyone who attend the original festival is enthusiastically welcomed to share stories. The event, famously known as Woodstock, was more than just a gathering; it was a cultural phenomenon that epitomized the spirit of an era. It was a celebration of peace, love, and music, drawing together a diverse crowd united by the desire for change and the power of collective expression

Amazing stories of the heroes at Arlington National Cemetery - this topic profiles people who achieved remarkable things during their military career and in some cases, equally impressive accomplishments in civilian life; most names are not well known but a few people will be recognized by most listeners; this presentation has two parts which can be presented separately

Dink Wiseman received her first tai chi certification in 2019 and has since obtained three additional certifications, including Tai Chi for Veterans. She offers a variety of classes, such as traditional, seated, Fusion, and FLOW. Additionally, she is certified in Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, and Restorative Yoga Dink's primary passion lies in working with senior citizens, and she strives to bring tai chi and yoga to those who may struggle to attend classes, including residents of senior living communities. Her classes are designed as a moving meditation, emphasizing the mind-body connection inherent in the practice. Dink shares, “One of the things I truly love about tai chi is that it brings you to this present moment Focusing on the movement of hands and feet, there is no opportunity to ruminate about anything!”

Erica Ann Sipes received her bachelor's and master's degrees in piano performance from the Eastman School of Music where she studied with Rebecca Penneys and Nelita True. She has also studied cello with Irene Sharp and with Paul Katz and has studied piano collaboration and accompanying with Jean Barr at the Eastman School and with Anne Epperson at the Music Academy of the West Ms Sipes debuted with the Chamber Soloists of San Francisco at age 10 and has also performed with the Chelsea Chamber Players in Ann Arbor, Michigan She has worked as a staff accompanist at the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival and has been to Prague and to St. Petersburg as the pianist for various choirs. Her playing has also brought her to the La Terasse Restaurant in Interlaken, Switzerland and to the Bella Voce Restaurant in San Francisco where she served as music director

She works on the Piano Music She Wrote project that she and pianist Sandra Mogensen started in the Spring of 2020. In 2026 she gave the US premiere of Anna von Schaden's Piano Concerto in B flat major and also performed as a soloist in Mozart's Triple Piano Concerto with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. She has also recently given her Let them Soar! solo piano recital around the country She is also a staff pianist and the practice/performance coach for the entire music department at Radford University

Ernie the dog will provide pet therapy sessions, bringing comfort and companionship to participants. During each session, participants will have the opportunity to interact with Ernie, enjoying his calming presence and affectionate personality. Pet therapy has been shown to reduce stress and improve emotional well-being.
