WHAT IS RUI UNIVERSITY?

RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

Dear Residents, Family, and Guests,

At RUI University, we believe lifelong learning should inspire not only the mind, but also joy, connection, and community. This summer, we invite you to embrace a true #SummerStateOfMind a season designed to spark curiosity, celebrate experience, and bring people together through meaningful conversation and engaging discovery

Featuring The Vintage Advantage, our Summer 2026 series celebrates the wisdom and perspective that enrich every stage of life through thought-provoking masterclasses, wellness conversations, historical exploration, and community-centered events designed to educate, inspire, and connect

Throughout the season, residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community can look forward to special monthly themes and celebrations designed to inspire learning and connection.

In June, we explore Facing Alzheimer’s: Knowledge, Compassion & Hope, featuring conversations surrounding Alzheimer’s research, memory care, and the science of empathy while recognizing Father’s Day, Juneteenth, and the spirit of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Do What You Love to End ALZ® initiative.

In July, we celebrate The Intellectual Legacy of History: Patterns, Power & Progress, examining revolutions, political transformation, and the great thinkers who shaped society while honoring America’s 250th birthday and the spirit of the Fourth of July

In August, we focus on The Science of Well-Being: Designing a Life of Purpose, Vitality & Connection, exploring the neurobiology of energy, wellness, and human connection while also enjoying our annual Bistro Trivia Tournament and the final celebrations of summer.

We invite residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community to join us throughout the summer as we celebrate learning, culture, wellness, and togetherness. These shared experiences strengthen connections across generations and make lifelong learning even more rewarding.

Randi Tate, Inspiritas Director with over four years of experiences in memeory care, Randi brings heart, creativity, and grounded presence to the work of supporting older adults. As an intuitive artist, musician, and death doula, Randi weaves expression, ritual, and meaningful engagement inot daily life enrichment, and end of life support

History on the Fourth of July

The Education Department at the Virginia War Memorial harnesses the power of storytelling, artifacts, and firsthand accounts to bring history to life. Programs are designed to educate and enrich learners of all ages and experiences.Unique interactive events feature veterans, historians, artifacts, uniforms, documents, and more, from the American Revolution to the present

Jim Triesler [Tree Slur] is an award-winning educator who serves as the Director of Education for the Virginia War Memorial and as Historian for the National Battle of the Bulge Association. He and his students received a “Save Our History Award” from the History Channel for their work towards preserving thousands of WWII letters In 2007, he was the Virginia Region 1 Teacher of the Year, and in 2013, he was named the Outstanding Teacher of American History by the Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution. Jim has conducted many veteran interviews. He received an R.E.B. Award that took him to the beaches, towns, and battlefields of Europe where our veterans once served He frequently teaches classes and gives lectures on various topics of American history

Mary Stella is a freelance vocalist and self-taught guitarist with over 43 years of musically interactive experience in eldercare, including working with individuals living with dementia. She has a deep passion for using music to create meaningful connection, comfort, and joy for seniors through familiar songs, storytelling, and engagement

Scrap RVA

SCRAP RVA is a non-profit that diverts donated & reclaimed arts & crafts materials from the waste stream and makes them available to the community. In addition to the storefront, SCRAP also has educational offerings which aim to teach the concepts and benefits of creative reuse with the goal of behavior changecombining waste reduction and art education in fun and unique ways

Hello there! We are Sara and Brandon Snead, proud parents of four wonderful kids and enthusiastic explorers of the incredible world of reptiles.

Our reptile journey began with a single snake, sparking a fascination that has since grown into a thriving family of over a dozen diverse scaly friends. What started as a curiosity has transformed into a passion for learning everything there is to know about these remarkable creatures. We've enjoyed every moment of this learning journey, especially sharing our newfound knowledge with our children

Our excitement is so infectious that we've even helped friends and family overcome their perfectly understandable apprehensions about these creatures. There's nothing more gratifying than watching people interact with, and learn about, these fascinating animals, discovering things they never knew before

Now, we want to bring this joy and education to you! We're excited to share our knowledge and passion, bringing a dash of fun and a wave of learning to your schools, daycares, and birthday parties. With Scaly Tails RVA, every encounter is a chance to embark on a thrilling new adventure!
