Each student will make a one of a kind abstract painting to show and share with their family As they experiment with different color combinations and tools, they'll find that each piece tells its own story, capturing a moment in time that is both personal and universal By the end of the session, everyone will leave with a masterpiece that reflects their individual style and creativity ready to be proudly displayed at home or shared with loved ones.

Creative Writing Workshops by CommonWealth Poetry focus on the stories and memories of each student to bring forth poetry. Our Senior Community Series seeks to ensure our writers are reminded they are important and their viewpoint is valuable. We analyze our favorite portions of our lives, what we have accomplished, and what we still yearn for – and we turn these feelings into the poetry they deserve to be Beginners welcome as we learn forms or free write

Robert Owens has led poetry workshops for over a decade at high schools in Henrico, Richmond, and King George County, as well as at The University of Virginia where he was selected to perform his original poems and teach a 2-hour workshop. Mr. Owens has also led workshops at Senior Living Communities, bringing his age range of students from 12-95! Robert believes in giving each person’s voice the chance to be heard.

JSlam poetry is a high-energy, live performance where poets share original work on stage using their voice, rhythm, and emotion to bring words to life. Unlike traditional readings, slam poetry is interactive and dynamic, often tackling real-world topics like identity, love, politics, and everyday experiences. Performances are typically short, powerful, and designed to connect directly with the audience Whether you come to cheer, snap, or just listen, a slam poetry event is about community, creativity, and the power of spoken word

The Power of Plants: Horticulture & Human Flourishing Focus: Therapeutic horticulture, biophilia & environmental psychology explores the profound connection between humans and nature, emphasizing how engaging with plants can enhance well-being and personal growth. Therapeutic horticulture offers a sanctuary from the stresses of daily life, where individuals can cultivate not only plants but also a sense of peace and accomplishment

Peggy Singlemann is known nationally as one of the foremost gardening experts, and in Virginia, she has been called the state’s “horticulture star.” Her experience in the field is exceeded only by her infectious enthusiasm and delight in sharing the joy of gardening and knowledge of best practices with all levels of gardeners For many gardeners, she is a familiar figure as the longtime host and co-producer of Virginia’s only gardening TV show, Virginia Home Grown and Virginia Home Grown Clippings, on Virginia Public Media/PBS. Recipient of 13 Telly awards, the program provides horticultural information to gardeners of all levels while exploring diverse gardens and natural areas across Virginia. Peggy is a popular speaker nationally and regionally Through her business, RVA Gardener LLC, Peggy frequently serves as a landscaping and gardening coach In 2024, she earned a Certificate in Sustainable Landscape Design from Cornell University. Peggy is also prominent in this field for her transformative role restoring, renovating, and overseeing the gardens and grounds of Maymont, the 100-acre historic estate and park in Richmond. As Director of Horticulture, Peggy revitalized distinctive areas of the park, including such famous sites as the Italian Garden and the Japanese Garden She is particularly well-known among historic landscape experts for taking on the enormous task of cataloging and documenting in a database the estate’s arboretum, many of whose trees were planted by the owners in the 1890s. An early proponent of sustainable landscaping before most horticulturists began practicing it, Peggy incorporated Virginia native plants and other environmental best management practices into Maymont’s landscape since the early 1990’s Drawing on her decades of experience, she teaches audiences not only the keys to creating sustainable landscapes but also the benefits.

TThe science of scent is all around us Participants will explore how the sense of smell works and put their noses to the test through hands-on experiments with the chemistry of aromas. From the anatomy of the human olfactory system to fascinating animal adaptations, and from alluring fragrances to notoriously unpleasant odors, discover how powerfully scent shapes perception and behavior. Attendees will also take home a curated sensory kit to continue exploring the connection between smell and taste beyond the session

A step into the role of a space explorer and investigate the fascinating science behind meteors, satellites, and other luminous phenomena in the night sky This engaging class unpacks the physics of spectacular space events, from fiery meteor streaks to the orbital mechanics of satellites reflecting sunlight back to Earth. Participants will learn how astronomers use telescopes and satellite data to study distant objects and better understand what we see overhead after dark. Attendees will also take home a compact telescope to continue exploring the night sky on their own.

Mad Science Company is an educational enrichment provider based in Virginia, specializing in delivering hands-on science experiences They offer a variety of programs focusing on topics such as light sound, electricity, magnetism and robotics. Founded by Ariel & Ron Schlien in 1985.

AI (Artificial Intelligent Scams: As Artificial intelligence in Technology continues to develop, its becoming harder for people to distinguish between whats real and whats AI This presentation will explain what AI is, discuss how we use it in our everday activities and show how scammers are turning it against us to steal our money and information. Attendees will also learn how they can keep themselves safe from the scammers tactics.

Shawn Smith presently serves at the State Director for the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP), a Medicare advocacy program focused on educating and supporting seniors in preventing, detecting, and reporting healthcare fraud, errors, and abuse Shawn leads a team of over a hundred paid and volunteer staff in providing services statewide through subcontract partnerships with the state’s 25 local area agencies on aging. His work with the SMP led him to author 101 Fraud Tips, an economic empowerment resource designed to help seniors protect their assets and identity from scammers
