WHAT IS RUI UNIVERSITY?

RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

101 Fraud Tips: Protecting Seniors from Scams

Discover practical and proven strategies to safeguard your finances and personal information in this engaging session led by Shawn Smith, State Director of the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol and author of the widely praised guide 101 Fraud Tips Drawing from the book’s clear, actionable advice and real-world examples, Shawn will explain the most common scams targeting older adults today and how to prevent, detect, and report fraudulent activity. Known for its accessibility and effectiveness, 101 Fraud Tips has been recognized within senior-service and fraudprevention circles as an essential resource for empowering adults to stay informed and secure. This presentation provides participants with confidence, clarity, and tools they can use immediately

Shawn Smith is the State Director of the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol program. He leads a team of over 100 paid and volunteer staff that educate seniors on fraud prevention. Shawn is also the author of “101 Fraud Tips”, a guide to help seniors protect their money and identify from scammers. His presentation will be about "Avoiding Common Healthcare Scams” In it, he will cover the most common types of scams affecting seniors and he will share ways to prevent, detect, and report those scams

VPAP's Civics Navigator Civic Health Series

RUI University is proud to launch the winter semester with the Civics Navigator –Civic Health Series, presented in partnership with the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) This series is designed to strengthen civic understanding and empower participants to engage meaningfully in the governmental processes that shape their communities.

The January class, Civic Engagement, introduces learners to the foundational concepts of civic participation, public service, and community involvement Participants will explore how informed engagement whether through voting, volunteerism, advocacy, or awareness contributes to healthy, vibrant communities This session provides a clear, accessible roadmap for understanding how local and state systems work, equipping residents with the knowledge to stay involved and make meaningful contributions.

Erin Hill joined VPAP in 2024 as Civics Education Program Director With a Master's in Education and BA in Political Science, she taught high school humanities for nearly a decade While at CodeRVA Regional High School, she earned both the 2021 VASCD Impact Award and was the 2020 National History Day Teacher of the Year Nominee for Virginia. Prior to VPAP, she honed her skills in the private sector as an agile project manager. Now, Erin helps Virginians understand the political process and engage with issues that matter at state and local levels

In this interactive discussion, we dive into the overwhelming flood of information we face every day. It’s exhausting to stay up-to-date with the constant stream of news coming at us from all directions – whether it's through newspapers, television broadcasts, radio programs, online articles, or the endless flood of social media posts. With so many different perspectives and sources, it can quickly feel like we’re being bombarded

For many of us, it becomes incredibly difficult to sort through the noise and discern what’s truly important. With various biases, agendas, and agendas shaping the way information is presented, how do we filter through the noise and separate the wheat from the chaff? How can we confidently distinguish between what’s real, credible, and trustworthy, and what’s exaggerated, misleading, or outright false?

This conversation will provide an opportunity to explore these questions indepth, and together we’ll work to develop strategies for identifying reliable sources of information and understanding how factors such as media bias and misinformation can shape our views The discussion will be guided by the input and experiences of the participants, helping us build better media literacy in an increasingly complex world.

Pam Benson spent more than 33 years of her four-decade journalism career as a producer at CNN. She was one of the network's original employees. While there, Pam produced a onehour news show; ran news coverage for the entire DC bureau; reported from the White House, the State Department, and the Pentagon; and traveled to more than 50 countries.

Heather Connole, a self-taught Impressionist oil painter with 17 years of experience, creates colorful and joyful works. Her bold brush strokes bring movement to picturesque landscapes, portraits, animals, and flowers Represented in various galleries, Heather also shares her passion by teaching art classes and inspiring confidence in her student.

Beginner Spanish

December 5 & December 12, 2025, January 9 & January 23, 2026, February 6 & February 20, 2026 at 11:00 am

Learn the basics of Spanish in a fun and supportive environment! This beginner class introduces essential vocabulary, simple grammar, and everyday conversation skills to help you start speaking and understanding Spanish with confidence. No prior experience needed.

Katie is a New Hampshire native who found a passion for Spanish beginning at age 11. Since then, she studied the language through college and graduated from Plymouth State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Theatre in 2023. Katie is a strong advocate for learning any second language, as it has enriched her life by allowing her to form lifelong friendships with people she would not otherwise have known.

Mr. Dickens on his North American Speaking Tour! and Albert Gallatin Returns!

Charles Dickens, well-known English author of beloved works such as”Great Expectations, " “The Pickwick Papers," OIiver Twist," and “Tale of Two Cities, " will be here at Wellington at Lake Manassas Retirement Community, while on his North American speaking tour!

“A Christmas Carol" beloved work which was so essential to the understanding in Victorian England of what Christmas was about and should be -with Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come -and the figure central to it all, Ebenezer Scrooge. Mr. Dickens will give us the full experience of this work, which was one of his greatest successes, then and now.

Albert Gallatin, former Secretary of the Treasury for Mr. Jefferson and Mr. Madison, former Minister to the Court of Louis XVIII Bourbon in Paris, will be returning to his friends at The Wellington at Lake Manassas Retirement Community! Subject: The Constitution of the United States, Part I: The Path to and the Creation of How did the Constitution come to be. How was it the product of decades of political thought and effort? How did the Federal Convention which met in Philadelphia in 1787 come about, and what were the issues that were addressedand NOT addressed?

Albert Gallatin, former Secretary of the Treasury for Mr Jefferson and Mr Madison, former Minister to the Court of Louis XVIII Bourbon in Paris, will be returning to his friends at The Wellington at Lake Manassas Retirement community. I The Constitution of the United States, Part 11: How is the Constitution organized? How has it changed over the decades? What is its importance, not only in 1826, but in 2026? Mr Gallatin will be prepared to discuss this at some length, and will be doing a ``deep dive" into the document.

Ronald Duquette is a historian, educator, and historical interpreter known for his portrayal of Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury under Jefferson and Madison. A retired U.S. Army intelligence officer, he combines scholarly research with theatrical storytelling to illuminate early American history

Steve Herholtz, CEO of B&S Inc., is a native of Central New York who has called Virginia home since 1986. Following a successful 38-year career as a Program Manager with Lockheed Martin, Steve retired and shifted his focus to community engagement and storytelling A resident of Warrenton with his wife, Beth, he has been a dedicated Volunteer in Park (VIP) at Manassas National Battlefield Park since 2013, where he is known as the “Swiss Army Knife” of volunteers for his versatility and engaging battlefield talks. In 2017, he expanded his passion for history and storytelling by sharing presentations on local history, world travel, and craft breweries with senior communities across Northern Virginia. He also currently leads the Brand Ambassador team at Old Bust Head Brewery in Vint Hill, combining his love of history, communication, and community connection.

Echoes of Nature is a Maryland-based nonprofit dedicated to environmental education and wildlife conservation. Established in 2002, the organization connects communities with nature through hands-on programs featuring live animals, fostering stewardship and appreciation for local ecosystems. They aim to inspire all ages to protect natural resources.
