WHAT IS RUI UNIVERSITY?

RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

At RUI University, we believe lifelong learning should inspire not only the mind, but also joy, connection, and community. This summer, we invite you to embrace a true #SummerStateOfMind a season designed to spark curiosity, celebrate experience, and bring people together through meaningful conversation and engaging discovery

Featuring The Vintage Advantage, our Summer 2026 series celebrates the wisdom and perspective that enrich every stage of life through thought-provoking masterclasses, wellness conversations, historical exploration, and community-centered events designed to educate, inspire, and connect

Throughout the season, residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community can look forward to special monthly themes and celebrations designed to inspire learning and connection.

In June, we explore Facing Alzheimer’s: Knowledge, Compassion & Hope, featuring conversations surrounding Alzheimer’s research, memory care, and the science of empathy while recognizing Father’s Day, Juneteenth, and the spirit of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Do What You Love to End ALZ® initiative.

In July, we celebrate The Intellectual Legacy of History: Patterns, Power & Progress, examining revolutions, political transformation, and the great thinkers who shaped society while honoring America’s 250th birthday and the spirit of the Fourth of July

In August, we focus on The Science of Well-Being: Designing a Life of Purpose, Vitality & Connection, exploring the neurobiology of energy, wellness, and human connection while also enjoying our annual Bistro Trivia Tournament and the final celebrations of summer.

We invite residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community to join us throughout the summer as we celebrate learning, culture, wellness, and togetherness. These shared experiences strengthen connections across generations and make lifelong learning even more rewarding.

Nature is All Around us with Bill Moore

Through his videos and photos, he hopes to bring these interesting animals a bit closer to you and tell you a few things about them that you may not already know.

Bill is a very enthusiastic Virginia Master Naturalist and leads a 600-member Conservation Club in his community at Lake Frederick. He is a frequent volunteer at the Virginia Arboretum, Sky Meadows State Park, Thompson's Wildlife Management Area, and other public lands in the northern Shenandoah Valley When not visiting his mom at Wellington, Bill can normally be found playing in the woods looking for critters or relaxing in a kayak on beautiful Lake Frederick.

Dive into the rich Civil War history of our region by exploring the stories, strategies, and significance of nearby battlefields. This course offers an engaging look at key events, local landmarks, and the people who shaped our nation’s past right in our own backyard

Steve Herholtz, CEO of B&S Inc , is a native of Central New York who has called Virginia home since 1986 Following a successful 38-year career as a Program Manager with Lockheed Martin, Steve retired and shifted his focus to community engagement and storytelling. A resident of Warrenton with his wife, Beth, he has been a dedicated Volunteer in Park (VIP) at Manassas National Battlefield Park since 2013, where he is known as the “Swiss Army Knife” of volunteers for his versatility and engaging battlefield talks In 2017, he expanded his passion for history and storytelling by sharing presentations on local history, world travel, and craft breweries with senior communities across Northern Virginia. He also currently leads the Brand Ambassador team at Old Bust Head Brewery in Vint Hill, combining his love of history, communication, and community connection

Sam and John Adams were instrumental in identifying the grievances of colonists against the British parliament. George Washington was the man who won independence on the battlefield, and who chose the site of the nation’s capital, now named for him. Revolutionary Cousins: Sam and John Adams. Sam was the hothead who pushed Bostonians to challenge Parliament, while John was the thoughtful lawyer who became the country’s second president.

James A. Baer is an emeritus professor of Latin American history at the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). He received his Ph.D. from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. At NOVA, Dr Baer enjoyed the challenge of teaching students from more than 150 different countries He was awarded a Fellowship for College Teachers from the National Endowment for the Humanities and served as the Virginia Chancellor’s Commonwealth Professor. He is the author of several journal articles on Cuban Protestants and Argentine social history. His book, Anarchist Immigrants in Spain and Argentina, is a transnational study of anarchists and their impact on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean His latest book, Citizen Engagement in Cuba, Neighbors and the State in Pogolotti was published by Lexington Books in February 2024 He enjoys hiking and kayaking and speaking on board cruise ships.

Ron Duquette, 73, is a native of Springfield, Massachusetts, and the lineal descendant of a French soldier who was in New France, in 1640. He is a 1974 graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont with a Bachelor of Letters degree (cum laude) in French Language and Literature, and has a 1984 Masters of Science Degree (summa cum laude) in Government from Campbell University, North Carolina Entering the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant in 1974, he spent the next twenty years in assignments and schools in Arizona, Washington State, New Jersey, North Carolina, and then in Europe between Germany and England.

His theatrical experience is broad, starting in high school through his time in the Army, ranging from French classical and modern theater (Le Mistere de la Passion, L'Avare, Le Tartuffe, Le Bal des Voleurs) to Shakespeare (King Lear, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice) to musical theater (The Sound of Music, Little Me, Patience (G&S), The Stingiest Man in Town). He has also interpreted several historic personages: Harry Truman in a 1987 self-written and produced staging in Heidelberg, Germany in connection with the 200th anniversary of the writing of the Constitution of the United States; and as the Marquis de La Fayette at both Tudor Place in Georgetown and Gadsby's Tavern in Old Towne Alexandria For the last fourteen years, he has presented Gallatin in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, New York City, Alexandria (VA), Arlington (VA), Bozeman, MT, and has conducted five of the Gallatin Project presentations at Gallatin's estate, Friendship Hill, PA. He has in these last several years, undertaken to be Charles Dickens doing a dramatic reading of “A Christmas Carol,” the best-known of the 27 Christmas Tales he wrote """

Learn the basics of Spanish in a fun and supportive environment! This beginner class introduces essential vocabulary, simple grammar, and everyday conversation skills to help you start speaking and understanding Spanish with confidence. No prior experience needed.

Katie is a New Hampshire native who found a passion for Spanish beginning at age 11. Since then, she studied the language through college and graduated from Plymouth State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Theatre in 2023. Katie is a strong advocate for learning any second language, as it has enriched her life by allowing her to form lifelong friendships with people she would not otherwise have known She is always excited to share her knowledge with others and strives to create a judgement free environment to make learning Spanish as fun as possible.

Ukemi Health: Fall Protection 101

This is a gentle, hands-on session focused on building confidence, improving balance awareness, and learning simple ways to protect yourself if you lose your balance.

What they’ll get out of it:

A simple stance they can use right away

Better awareness of how their body moves and reacts

A chance to practice safely at their own pace

Less fear around falling, and more confidence moving day to day

Everything we do is optional and adaptable some people jump in, some people watch first. Both are part of the process.

The goal is simple:

Help people feel a little more secure in their bodies, have a plan in case something unexpected happens, and keep doing the things they enjoy with more confidence.

Founded by Bryan DePhillip, Ukemi Health Partners integrates over a decade of martial arts training, movement coaching, and adult fitness instruction

The organization continues to expand institutional partnerships focused on injury risk reduction and confidence-building.
