WHAT IS RUI UNIVERSITY?
RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

January – Civic Engagement
Explore the importance of informed citizenship through discussions and activities focused on civic processes, volunteerism, and community involvement. January encourages residents to stay engaged and empowered.
February – Global Culture & Contemporary Issues
Expand your global perspective through programs highlighting diverse cultures, current events, and worldwide trends. February’s offerings spark meaningful dialogue and deepen global understanding.

BUSINESS
101 Fraud Tips: Protecting Seniors from Scams

Discover practical and proven strategies to safeguard your finances and personal information in this engaging session led by Shawn Smith, State Director of the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol and author of the widely praised guide 101 Fraud Tips. Drawing from the book’s clear, actionable advice and real-world examples, Shawn will explain the most common scams targeting older adults today and how to prevent, detect, and report fraudulent activity Known for its accessibility and effectiveness, 101 Fraud Tips has been recognized within senior-service and fraudprevention circles as an essential resource for empowering adults to stay informed and secure. This presentation provides participants with confidence, clarity, and tools they can use immediately.



Shawn Smith is the State Director of the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol program. He leads a team of over 100 paid and volunteer staff that educate seniors on fraud prevention. Shawn is also the author of “101 Fraud Tips”, a guide to help seniors protect their money and identify from scammers. His presentation will be about "Avoiding Common Healthcare Scams” In it, he will cover the most common types of scams affecting seniors and he will share ways to prevent, detect, and report those scams.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
VPAP's Civics Navigator Civic Health Series

RUI University is proud to launch the winter semester with the Civics Navigator –Civic Health Series, presented in partnership with the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) This series is designed to strengthen civic understanding and empower participants to engage meaningfully in the governmental processes that shape their communities
The January class, Civic Engagement, introduces learners to the foundational concepts of civic participation, public service, and community involvement Participants will explore how informed engagement whether through voting, volunteerism, advocacy, or awareness contributes to healthy, vibrant communities This session provides a clear, accessible roadmap for understanding how local and state systems work, equipping residents with the knowledge to stay involved and make meaningful contributions.


Erin Hill joined VPAP in 2024 as Civics Education Program Director With a Master's in Education and BA in Political Science, she taught high school humanities for nearly a decade While at CodeRVA Regional High School, she earned both the 2021 VASCD Impact Award and was the 2020 National History Day Teacher of the Year Nominee for Virginia. Prior to VPAP, she honed her skills in the private sector as an agile project manager. Now, Erin helps Virginians understand the political process and engage with issues that matter at state and local levels

FINE ARTS
Art of the Four Seasons

Artists use color palettes and specific imagery to evoke the mood of each season, from the bright yellows of summer to the cool blues and whites of winter We will create a painting combining the four seasons
The Art of Georgia O'Keeffe

The Art of Georgia O'Keeffe: We will explore the works of one of the most famous female artists. Her interesting life and art career will also be discussed. Her large images of flowers will be a focus in our slideshow and serve as inspiration for our paintings. Each resident will have a choice of various flowers to paint
The History of African American Art in America

The History of African American Art in America: In honor of black history month, we will explore some of the visual art of African Americans throughout history We will use these artists and their work as inspiration for our painting

Emily Basto received an MS in Art Therapy from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2009. She has her undergraduate degree in Sociology and Anthropology. Her interest in other cultures and customs influences many of her art projects. She currently works with older adults and really enjoys this community in various settings. Emily hopes to continue to promote art therapy services and highlight the many benefits

Al Chewning s a native Virginian and has lived in Virginia Beach since he was six weeks old. In 2003, after twenty seven years in the Virginia Beach Fire Department, Al started Histories and Haunts, L.L.C. as a way to share his love of history and his interest in the paranormal Drawing from nine years experience presenting American Civil War living history for the National Park Service, in 2007 Al created a unique, first person educational experience that brings living history into the classroom. This program is "The Life of a Civil War Soldier". In 2012 Al added a new program that portrays the “Golden Age of Piracy", the years from 1680 to 1730, as it relates to Colonial America In his personas Al uses museum quality reproduction items to enhance his presentations.

Hampton Roads History 101: Gloucester County, Fort Monroe, Lafayette, and Beyond

This course will dive into topics including the American Revolution and the Civil War, and explore how these histories connect to Fort Monroe, Gloucester, and the Marquis de Lafayette.

Robert Kelly is a graduate of Old Dominion University, where he received his Bachelor of History in 2009. While studying at ODU, Robert focused on Civil War, Virginia, and Maritime History. In January 2020, Robert was named Gloucester County’s Museums Coordinator and is responsible for the management of the Gloucester Museum of History.

MUSIC HISTORY
High Notes Music

At High Note Music School, the HealthRHYTHMS Drum Circle is a group drumming experience designed for wellness, community, and connection. In a typical 45–to 90-minute session, participants of any age or musical background come together in a circle no prior drumming experience required High Notes Music School.

Wisteria Perry has nearly 25 years of experience in the museum field and is currently the Associate Curator of Community Engagement at The Mariners' Museum and Park in Newport News, Virginia. She focuses on researching the collection and creating engaging programs for diverse audiences. Outside of her museum work, Wisteria enjoys cooking, planning trips, and spending time with her energetic niece and nephew
Karavakia: A Greek Holiday Tradition with The Mariners Museum

Learn a little about Greece’s maritime history and how it is honored by decorating boats. Along the way, we will learn about how cultures across the globe celebrate the holiday season and how many of these traditions became a part of our holiday fun!

Erika Cosme is the Assistant Curator for Community Engagement at the Museum. She has worked on various projects, including programs on diverse topics, developing engaging gallery spaces, and managing the Ages of Exploration website. In her current role on the Curatorial Team, she researches the museum's collections to create programming for all ages.
