WHAT IS RUI UNIVERSITY?

RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

Dear Residents, Family, and Guests,

At RUI University, we believe lifelong learning should inspire not only the mind, but also joy, connection, and community This summer, we invite you to embrace a true #SummerStateOfMind a season designed to spark curiosity, celebrate experience, and bring people together through meaningful conversation and engaging discovery.

Featuring The Vintage Advantage, our Summer 2026 series celebrates the wisdom and perspective that enrich every stage of life through thought-provoking masterclasses, wellness conversations, historical exploration, and community-centered events designed to educate, inspire, and connect

Throughout the season, residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community can look forward to special monthly themes and celebrations designed to inspire learning and connection

In June, we explore Facing Alzheimer’s: Knowledge, Compassion & Hope, featuring conversations surrounding Alzheimer’s research, memory care, and the science of empathy while recognizing Father’s Day, Juneteenth, and the spirit of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Do What You Love to End ALZ® initiative.

In July, we celebrate The Intellectual Legacy of History: Patterns, Power & Progress, examining revolutions, political transformation, and the great thinkers who shaped society while honoring America’s 250th birthday and the spirit of the Fourth of July.

In August, we focus on The Science of Well-Being: Designing a Life of Purpose, Vitality & Connection, exploring the neurobiology of energy, wellness, and human connection while also enjoying our annual Bistro Trivia Tournament and the final celebrations of summer

We invite residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community to join us throughout the summer as we celebrate learning, culture, wellness, and togetherness. These shared experiences strengthen connections across generations and make lifelong learning even more rewarding

Honoring Stories is a writing class in which participants do 10-minute free writes, shared in an encouraging, judgement-free environment Bring a pen and paper and an open heart It’s a space where stories are celebrated, and each participant’s voice is valued. Whether you're an experienced writer or someone who’s just starting to explore the world of words, this class welcomes you. Through these shared narratives, we uncover connections, find healing, and honor the myriad experiences that shape our lives. Join us for an enriching experience that fosters creativity and community, and discover the power of storytelling as a tool for personal growth and reflection

Jennifer Jurlando has been offering writing classes and grief support groups at the Barrington since 2017. She encourages participants to share, to listen, and to lean on each other for wisdom and encouragement. Jennifer is an adjunct instructor at VCU and a grief group facilitator at Full Circle Grief Center She is the daughter of a Barrington resident, the mother of a Barrington employee, and a frequent presence in these halls!

THE DILEMMA OF ORDINARY PEOPLE IN HITLER’S GERMAN

RETIRED U. S. DIPLOMAT, HISTORIAN AND AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR, DAVID K. WESSEL will review the ways ordinary German citizens responded to the traumatic changes Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party imposed on their country One by one they lost their choice of political parties, their liberty to question government policies, their freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and their ability to trust their neighbors. How did they respond?

David K. Wessel is one of six siblings born to Karl-Heinz Wessel, the protagonist of *Choosing Sides*, a novel that narrates the struggles of an ordinary family (his own) divided by the turmoil of Hitler’s Germany Having served as a U S diplomat at embassies in Rome and Guatemala, David brings a wealth of experience to his writing. When exploring the years leading up to World War II, he draws upon his family's narrative, his education as a history major at Rutgers University, and more than fifty years of research on the impact of the Weimar Republic on its citizens’ lives

Anyone who attend the original festival is enthusiastically welcomed to share stories Join us for a nostalgic journey as we explore the magic of Woodstock, an event that became a symbol of peace, love, and music We'll dive into the performances that made history, from Jimi Hendrix's electrifying rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” to Joan Baez's poignant protest songs.

Josh Urban is a speaker, musician, disk jockey, & musciologist. He's hosted radio and podcast programs, played and taught guitar professionally for nearly twenty years and is an enthusiastic collector of recordings from around the world
