WHAT IS RUI UNIVERSITY?

RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

Dear Residents, Family, and Guests,

At RUI University, we believe lifelong learning should inspire not only the mind, but also joy, connection, and community. This summer, we invite you to embrace a true #SummerStateOfMind a season designed to spark curiosity, celebrate experience, and bring people together through meaningful conversation and engaging discovery

Featuring The Vintage Advantage, our Summer 2026 series celebrates the wisdom and perspective that enrich every stage of life through thought-provoking masterclasses, wellness conversations, historical exploration, and community-centered events designed to educate, inspire, and connect

Throughout the season, residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community can look forward to special monthly themes and celebrations designed to inspire learning and connection.

In June, we explore Facing Alzheimer’s: Knowledge, Compassion & Hope, featuring conversations surrounding Alzheimer’s research, memory care, and the science of empathy while recognizing Father’s Day, Juneteenth, and the spirit of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Do What You Love to End ALZ® initiative.

In July, we celebrate The Intellectual Legacy of History: Patterns, Power & Progress, examining revolutions, political transformation, and the great thinkers who shaped society while honoring America’s 250th birthday and the spirit of the Fourth of July

In August, we focus on The Science of Well-Being: Designing a Life of Purpose, Vitality & Connection, exploring the neurobiology of energy, wellness, and human connection while also enjoying our annual Bistro Trivia Tournament and the final celebrations of summer

We invite residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community to join us throughout the summer as we celebrate learning, culture, wellness, and togetherness. These shared experiences strengthen connections across generations and make lifelong learning even more rewarding.

Our summer classes and events are open to all Whether you are returning to RUI University or joining us for the very first time, we welcome you to experience a summer filled with insight, inspiration, and celebration.

AUTHOR SERIES: Featuring David Wessel

The Dilemma of Ordinary People in Nazi Germany”

Ordinary Germans – a thirty minute lecture to raise awareness of the difficult choices faced by the citizens of Germany as Adolf Hitler and the National Socialists took control of their country – and address some key questions. What did ordinary Germans know about the Nazi attrocities? What did they do about it? How could this have happened? What would we do in a similar situation?

David K Wessel is one of six children born to Karl-Heinz Wessel, the main character of “Choosing Sides” David is a retired elected government official and U.S. diplomat, published historian and award-winning novelist. When it comes to writing about the years leading up to World War II he relies not only on his family story, but fifty years of studying how the Weimar Republic shaped the lives of ‘ordinary Germans ’ At university, he majored in history with a focus on Germany between the wars and has continued his interest in the subject ever since After leaving foreign service, he returned to those studies and dove into the specific research so well reflected in Choosing Sides.

Musicians served gods and kings, and since music sets the atmosphere for romance, musicians and musical instruments are often seen in paintings. Let’s explore the history of musical instruments through paintings. So many we know today are descended of musical instruments as recorded pictorially in the past Wherever possible, images from the Met Museum’s Musical Instruments collection, will be included, so you can expect to see pictures of precious stringed instruments and the world’s oldest surviving piano

The Military Legion Auxiliary the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization The Auxiliary embodies the spirit of America that has prevailed through war and peace. Along with The American Legion, it solidly stands behind America and her ideals.

Virginia's Role in the American Revolution

Jack Jouett, best known for his 40-mile ride during the American Revolution in 1781 Sometimes called the "Paul Revere of the South", Jouett rode to warn Thomas Jefferson, then the outgoing governor of Virginia (and the Virginia legislature who had fled the new state's capitol before that British cavalry had been sent to capture them.

Ashley Webb received her BA in History and Anthropology from Longwood University and her MA in Museum Studies from Bournemouth University, in Dorset, England. She is the Executive Director and Curator of Collections and Exhibitions with the Historical Society of Western Virginia, which operates both the Roanoke History and the O Winston Link Museums
