WHAT IS RUI UNIVERSITY?

RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

At RUI University, we believe lifelong learning should inspire not only the mind, but also joy, connection, and community. This summer, we invite you to embrace a true #SummerStateOfMind — a season designed to spark curiosity, celebrate experience, and bring people together through meaningful conversation and engaging discovery

Featuring The Vintage Advantage, our Summer 2026 series celebrates the wisdom and perspective that enrich every stage of life through thought-provoking masterclasses, wellness conversations, historical exploration, and community-centered events designed to educate, inspire, and connect.

Throughout the season, residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community can look forward to special monthly themes and celebrations designed to inspire learning and connection.

In June, we explore Facing Alzheimer’s: Knowledge, Compassion & Hope, featuring conversations surrounding Alzheimer’s research, memory care, and the science of empathy while recognizing Father’s Day, Juneteenth, and the spirit of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Do What You Love to End ALZ® initiative

In July, we celebrate The Intellectual Legacy of History: Patterns, Power & Progress, examining revolutions, political transformation, and the great thinkers who shaped society while honoring America’s 250th birthday and the spirit of the Fourth of July

In August, we focus on The Science of Well-Being: Designing a Life of Purpose, Vitality & Connection, exploring the neurobiology of energy, wellness, and human connection while also enjoying our annual Bistro Trivia Tournament and the final celebrations of summer.

We invite residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community to join us throughout the summer as we celebrate learning, culture, wellness, and togetherness. These shared experiences strengthen connections across generations and make lifelong learning even more rewarding.

Residents are encouraged to tap into their creative side in this interactive art class led by Nicholas Bottis Whether you're an experienced painter or exploring a new hobby, this class provides a fantastic chance to unwind, connect with others, and craft something truly beautiful.

Nicholas Bottis is a Virginia Beach–based artist, educator, and Navy veteran with a lifelong passion for the visual arts After serving over two decades in the U.S. Navy as a Master Training Specialist and instructor, he pursued his artistic calling, earning a BA from Virginia Wesleyan College and an MFA from Vermont College of Norwich University.

Nicholas has taught a wide range of art and design courses at Saint Leo University and Regent University His expertise spans drawing, painting, design, and art appreciation. In addition to his academic work, he teaches acrylic painting through Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation. An active artist, Nicholas has showcased his work in a solo exhibition at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. He enjoys hiking, playing the ukulele, and plein air painting, often drawing inspiration from nature and his interest in Renaissance and Impressionist art

Egyptian Art

We will have a general overview of art from Ancient Egypt and its common themes This art was a highly structured system focusing on immortality, cosmic order, and religious devotion Common motifs included the lotus flower, papyrus, and the sun disk, which symbolized the cyclical nature of life and rebirth. We will create a painting in the traditional style and subject matter of Egyptian art.

Celebrating Americas 250th

In 2026, the United States' 250th anniversary is being celebrated Major institutions like the National Gallery of Art and Bowdoin College Museum of Art are showcasing American history, landscapes, and diverse perspectives from colonial times to the present day. We will explore paintings and artists that focus on these themes and we will create a painting to celebrate America and Independence Day.

Themes in Chinese Art

Themes in Chinese Art - Traditional Chinese art focuses on capturing the essence of nature, harmony, and symbolic meaning, with key themes including landscapes, bird-and-flower painting, and animal and figure painting We will explore these themes as well as the symbolism in many of them. The tiger in Chinese art is a significant cultural symbol representing power, bravery, and protection. Our painting subject will be a colorful tiger.

Emily Basto is a registered art therapist with a Master's in Art Therapy from Eastern Virginia Medical School and a background in Sociology and Anthropology Inspired by global cultures, she integrates these influences into her projects. Emily specializes in working with older adults, promoting the therapeutic benefits of art to enhance well-being.

Each session offers fascinating stories, historical insights, and opportunities for discussion, making it perfect for both lifelong locals and history enthusiasts eager to learn more about the area we call home

Robert Kelly is the Museums Coordinator for Gloucester County, VA, managing the Gloucester Museum of History An Old Dominion University graduate with a focus on Civil War, Virginia & Maritime History, he served as the Museum Historian at Fort Monroe. Robert is also Vice President of the American Friends of Lafayette, promoting education and programming.

Landing on the shores of the Cape, on April 26th 1607, the men and boys of the Virginia Company Charter claimed this land for Henry, son of King James Compare and contrast primary sources of John Smith and George Percy, to discover the reasons behind the journey from Cape Henry to Jamestown. This program will show monuments currently dedicated to the first landing and its importance to our country’s beginnings

Battle of the Capes

With the Revolutionary War in full swing, Cornwallis had established a strong hold in Yorktown General Washington called on General Rochambeau for assistance The French navy, under Admiral Comte De Grasse formed a blockade at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay to prohibit the British navy from assisting Cornwallis. The Battle of the Capes was one of the most decisive naval battles of the war, learn about its importance during this program.

The Old Cape Henry Lighthouse stands on the site of the First Landing of the Jamestown settlers in 1607 and was built in 1792, making it the first federally funded public works project in the country This beautiful lighthouse has seen many historic events and we here at Preservation Virginia are dedicated to teaching history lovers all about lighthouses and the history that surrounds this one in particular!

The Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways Museum is a historical and educational destination dedicated to preserving and sharing the story of the Battle of Great Bridge a pivotal early victory for Patriot forces during the American Revolutionary War. Located on and around the original battlefield in Chesapeake, Virginia, the museum serves as both a memorial and a learning center that connects visitors to the region’s Revolutionary War and waterway history
