WHAT IS RUI UNIVERSITY?

RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

At RUI University, we believe lifelong learning should inspire not only the mind, but also joy, connection, and community. This summer, we invite you to embrace a true #SummerStateOfMind a season designed to spark curiosity, celebrate experience, and bring people together through meaningful conversation and engaging discovery

Featuring The Vintage Advantage, our Summer 2026 series celebrates the wisdom and perspective that enrich every stage of life through thought-provoking masterclasses, wellness conversations, historical exploration, and community-centered events designed to educate, inspire, and connect

Throughout the season, residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community can look forward to special monthly themes and celebrations designed to inspire learning and connection.

In June, we explore Facing Alzheimer’s: Knowledge, Compassion & Hope, featuring conversations surrounding Alzheimer’s research, memory care, and the science of empathy while recognizing Father’s Day, Juneteenth, and the spirit of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Do What You Love to End ALZ® initiative.

In July, we celebrate The Intellectual Legacy of History: Patterns, Power & Progress, examining revolutions, political transformation, and the great thinkers who shaped society while honoring America’s 250th birthday and the spirit of the Fourth of July

In August, we focus on The Science of Well-Being: Designing a Life of Purpose, Vitality & Connection, exploring the neurobiology of energy, wellness, and human connection while also enjoying our annual Bistro Trivia Tournament and the final celebrations of summer.

We invite residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community to join us throughout the summer as we celebrate learning, culture, wellness, and togetherness. These shared experiences strengthen connections across generations and make lifelong learning even more rewarding.

Seated Zumba offers residents a , low-impact dance fitness session where participants stay seated while moving to upbeat Latin and international music, performing gentle arm, core, and leg movements that improve coordination, flexibility, and cardiovascular health.

Lesley Kim, isa certified Group Fitness Instructor through the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and she shares her passion for fitness with others. She has taught a variety of exercise formats, and developed a special connection with her 50+ adult fitness classes.

Dr. James Baer is an emeritus professor of history at Northern Virginia Community College Holding a Ph D in Latin American History from Rutgers, he has published extensively on Argentine social history and Cuban Protestants. His books include Anarchist Immigrants in Spain and Argentina and A Social History of Cuba’s Protestants: God and the Nation.

Participants are sitting in chairs or wheel chairs. Movements are very slow and repeated taking into account their limited mobility, and the memory deficit. With repetition, participants may be able to extend gradually the range of their movements. To anchor the practice in their memories, the instructor may sing a brief song that intends to refresh in their attention that this is the time for Tai Chi

Featuring traditional tunes, storytelling, and historical insight, this program highlights how old-time music helped shape community life, preserved cultural heritage, and influenced generations of American folk and bluegrass musicians.

William (Bill) Lloyd is a passionate Mountain Dulcimer instructor based in Alexandria, Virginia, offering private and group lessons, workshops, and educational programs throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

Inspired by traditional music after attending the Black Mountain Music Festival in 2018, he quickly developed a deep love for the simplicity and versatility of the Mountain Dulcimer Bill is a member of the First National Dulcimer Orchestra (FNDO) and is dedicated to helping students of all ages grow as musicians. His teaching approach focuses on creating a fun, supportive, and educational environment where students can experience the joy of making music.
